We all have something to offer.

Creating meaningful service opportunities has always been central to the OASIS mission. As OASIS grew in the early 1980s, our participants made it clear that they had talent, ability and experience that they wanted to use.

They have eagerly responded to opportunities to take on roles of value. OASIS has been enriched by thousands of volunteers who have shared their expertise as instructors for arts, humanities and technology classes. For 20 years our intergenerational tutors have witnessed their students’ progress in becoming more confident readers and learners.

OASIS volunteers continue to demonstrate great commitment as they take on new leadership roles. Through Active Generations, self-directed volunteer teams are helping children improve their eating habits and have fun being physically active. Lay leaders for health classes see their OASIS students make small changes that add up to significant improvement in their quality of life.

It has been so gratifying to hear from our volunteers about the impact of service in their lives. Now through our first national survey of OASIS participants in 2009, we have data showing how important this is. Participants reported high levels of benefits from their involvement in OASIS classes and volunteer opportunities—improved self-esteem, a better outlook on life, feeling more engaged in the community and expanding their circle of friends. What’s particularly striking is that among those who responded, volunteers reported the greatest benefits.

As a volunteer at my neighborhood elementary school I have been privileged to share their experience. I treasure those hours each week and appreciate even more how our quality of life depends in large part on feeling connected to others.

from the President There is an emerging awareness on a national level that our older adults are the resource we’ve been looking for all along.

Today’s older adults expect more—from their retirement, their communities

and themselves.

This country is home to 77 million Baby Boomers, many of whom are healthy and wise. They still want to work, serve and learn. They are looking for ways to plug in, to make a difference. They want to lead.

The list of urgent social problems that plague communities is long—childhood obesity, underserved children served by school districts with shrinking budgets and strained resources, unemployed people in need of job training and skills. There are countless ways to harness the time, talents and wisdom of older adults who have quickly discovered that they want to do more as they look to the future.

OASIS has long been a champion of engaging people through service. Through innovative programs like Intergenerational Tutoring, Active Generations and Connections, we are inspired by the thousands of OASIS volunteers who give their time and experience to help people in their communities.

There is an emerging awareness on a national level that our older adults are the resource we’ve been looking for all along. But making the most of this valuable resource is going to require thoughtful coordination.

OASIS is proud to be part of Age4Action, a diverse and powerful network comprised of more than 60 organizations who empower and engage adults 50 and older for the good of all generations. A steering committee was formed in 2009 to create a network that will eventually represent all aspects of 50-plus civic engagement: volunteerism, lifelong learning, work and civic leadership.

The 50-plus population is in the best possible position to serve as assets to our communities. OASIS has engaged adults in productive aging all along, and we’re pleased to help guide the development of Age4Action into a national, comprehensive model that serves the diverse needs and desires of older adults.

The groundswell of understanding for just how imperative our older adults are today and always is powerful.

Problems Prompt Action “So many people are overweight

in this country,” says retiree Judy HollandSheets. “But I think an awareness is emerging.”

Holland-Sheets’ concern about obesity, particularly in children, is part of what prompted her to attend an informational meeting about the Active Generations program.

This intergenerational program developed by OASIS addresses childhood obesity by providing children and their families with the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices. Led by mature volunteers in an after-school setting, the program includes three specific components: an interactive health lesson, a healthy snack and moderate to vigorous physical activity.

Active Generations was piloted in 2006-07 in San Antonio and Pittsburgh.

The WellPoint Foundation provided support to implement the program to more cities in 2008-2010, including Los Angeles, Lakewood, Escondido and San Diego, California; Indianapolis, Indiana; St. Louis, Missouri; Albany and Syracuse, New York.

“It sounded interesting,” HollandSheets says. “Even though I’d worked for 33 years and felt done, I knew I wasn’t done done. The Active Generations program seemed like a good way to get going on something again.”

Twice a week, Holland-Sheets joins other Active Generations volunteers meeting at two Syracuse schools—Meachem Elementary and Van Duyn Elementary— to work with children in grades three to five who are enrolled in the Say Yes To Education After School Program (SYTE).

The Active Generations program has been a welcome addition.

“Our partnership with OASIS is working out very well,” says Jenna LaManna,

SYTE site director at Van Duyn. “The volunteers seem to be really comfortable interacting with the children, and the kids are responding well to the opportunity to try new, healthy foods and take part in some active games. This is a win-win relationship.”

Making a Measurable Difference ®

Holland-Sheets enjoys her newfound interaction with the children, and says she’ll be interested to see if she is truly making an impact.

OASIS selected an evidencebased, nationally recognized curriculum called CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) for the Active Generations Program. Developed by the University of Texas School of Public Health, the curriculum has been proven to impact healthy behaviors in children. Early pre- and post-test results collected from participants in Albany, Escondido, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and 3

U.S. have more than tripled among those ages 6 to 11. Many obese children will carry those extra pounds into adulthood, increasing the incidence of heart disease, diabetes, strokes and cancer.

Syracuse indicate that approximately 475 students demonstrated improvements in several areas.

“Children’s knowledge of proper nutrition improved by more than 60 percent,” says James Teufel, OASIS National Health Director. “The percentage of students participating in moderate exercise increased, and children were more confident that they could participate in activities such as running or biking.”

“I think this country’s leadership will find Active Generations very appealing,” says Sharon Brangman, MD, and Division Chief of the Department of Geriatric Medicine, SUNY Upstate Medical University, in Syracuse. “They are looking for creative ways for our citizens to solve complex problems in this country. There are many layers of need that are being addressed through Active Generations. This program not only focuses on helping younger people understand how to be more healthy, but also engages older adults, providing an opportunity to interact with the community.”

Marylen Mann Leadership Award for Creativity and Excellence A unique approach aimed at treating older adult volunteers as valued, trusted employees has earned the San Antonio OASIS center the 2009 Marylen Mann Leadership Award for Creativity and Excellence.

Three times a year, more than 40 volunteers who man the day-to-day operations of the San Antonio OASIS attend a daylong training session planned

by Executive Director Brenda Schmachtenberger. Volunteer Lucy Lane says the training helps her understand OASIS even better.

“We’re learning something new and useful each time,” Lane says. “After I leave these training events, I feel that I have received a gift.”

“By providing training and ongoing communication about how the organization works at the local and national level, San Antonio OASIS has given its volunteers a powerful message that they are valued, respected and a vital part of the organization’s success,” says Marcia Kerz, president of the OASIS Institute.

Growing Fit Brains OASIS has the right idea!

“Keeping the mind and body engaged is a key component to successful aging,” says Dean Blevins, PhD, and chair of the MindAlert Award Review Committee, which recently recognized OASIS for innovation.

Conducted by the American Society on Aging with generous funding from the MetLife Foundation, the MindAlert program’s goal is to disseminate current information on research and innovative programs in the non-profit sector that help older adults maintain and enhance their cognitive function. The program recognized OASIS with a MindAlert Award to applaud the Active Generations program.

“Active Generations’ approach to engaging older adults as champions in the war on childhood obesity is innovative,” says Blevins. “The program provides a creative way for participants to stay physically active themselves and keep their minds working in new ways.”

The intergenerational nutrition/ activity program that partners older adults with children addresses another serious concern for seniors: social isolation.

“So many of my patients tell me they feel useless,” says Sharon Brangman, MD, and Division Chief of the Department of Geriatric Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. “They don’t know what to do with their days.

But programs like Active Generations give them new purpose. They’re physically and mentally engaged.”

A growing body of neuroscience research confirms the “use it or lose it” theory for maintaining good health and well-being of the brain. In fact, new research in the emerging science of the brain shows that training the brain causes

neuoroplasticity—the ability of the brain to change for the better, even in later life.

Clinical neuropsychologist Paul Nussbaum, who specializes in aging and brain health at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, says we need a variety of activities that challenge the mind in novel and complex ways. Taking classes, learning a language, travel and writing are all ways to promote brain fitness.

OASIS participants eagerly fill classes on staying mentally sharp. “Our Magic Brain” in Chicago explores memory function and techniques for harnessing underused brain power. In Rochester, Barbara Bruce leads “Mental Aerobics,” encouraging people to learn a new sport or game, read mysteries, grow a garden and many more ideas for challenging the mind.

“OASIS is a healthpromoting activity in my world,” according to Dr. Paul Nussbaum, who spoke at Pittsburgh OASIS this spring.

“We should have OASIS as a prescription for people interested in brain health because with all these stimulating activities you’re building brain reserve.”

A healthy diet and staying socially engaged are also recommended for brain fitness, as is regular physical activity.

“The human brain demands 25 percent of the blood from each heartbeat,” says Nussbaum. “Regular physical activity— such as walking, dancing, cycling and other forms of aerobic exercise—enhances this cerebrovascular blood flow.”

“Stimulating learning opportunities, healthy lifestyles and social engagement have been part of the OASIS mission for 26 years,” says Marcia Kerz, president of The OASIS Institute. “The research on cognitive health is providing new evidence that the kinds of opportunities we offer do contribute to staying mentally fit.”

Catching Up with Technology Mary Archer knew how to use a com-

puter. She handled the books for years for her husband’s office in San Antonio. But when she needed to go back into the official workforce, Archer, 58, discovered that time and technology had passed her by.

“During job interviews, people kept asking me if I knew how to use Excel and Word,” says Archer. “It didn’t take me long to figure out that if I was going to get a job, I was going to need those particular computer skills.”

Archer’s experience is common.

Technology skills are increasingly needed by older adults today. Unfortunately, computer classes designed for general audiences don’t often meet the unique needs of older adults, leaving them frustrated and discouraged.

Archer turned to the AARP Foundation and OASIS in San Antonio for help. AARP is one of several Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) agencies providing OASIS Connections classes for their participants who need job search and workplace technology skills.

Developed over 10 years, OASIS Connections is a comprehensive, evidence-based curriculum designed specifically for older learners to help them build success, confidence and practical technology skills. A research study by

the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2009-10 demonstrated that Connections is effective in increasing the knowledge of the course participants and their comfort with computers.

Funding from the AT&T Foundation has enabled OASIS to expand the Connections program to 73 partners in 18 cities, reaching more than 35,000 people since 2005. Other SCSEP providers such as Easter Seals in Portland and Community Options in San Diego are among the partners offering OASIS Connections.

It is very challenging to find the right job for someone,” says Eva Trevino Garcia, director of the AARP Foundation’s SCSEP program in San Antonio. “The computer classes are helping tremendously in preparing people so when they find employment it’s a job they can keep.”

“The older you get, the harder it can be to re-enter the workforce,” says Archer, who took courses covering the basics of Excel and Word. “The Connections classes gave us a lot of information and skills that we needed. It boosted my confidence considerably.”

Archer now works as a receptionist for the admissions department at Hallmark College of Aeronautics. She enjoys the work, which does indeed require the computer skills she gained through Connections.

Making the Most of the Library Ten to fifteen years ago, searching for a job was something people still

did primarily through print and personal networks.

But today, job opportunities are advertised online and three-quarters of corporations require an online application. As more people of all ages have been laid off, the demand for computer skills and help finding jobs has soared.

As a result, the Pima County Public Libraries in Tucson, Arizona, have invested more in technology training by expanding the OASIS Connections computer classes they began offering in 2008. The Library has adopted Connections as the curriculum for its branch libraries.

“Now as more working people are out of jobs, everybody needs these technical skills to apply for a job,” says Beth Matthias-Loghry, adult services coordinator for the Pima County Libraries.

“The library wanted consistency in the computer classes offered in their branches.

We recognized that Connections was a quality program that the library didn’t have to reinvent.”

Matthias-Loghrey says that in the third quarter of 2009, the Pima County Public Libraries enrolled 752 people in 101 Connections classes. The Library has also partnered with local OneStop Career Centers to provide Job Help, helping people search and apply for jobs online through the libraries.

The partnership doesn’t stop there.

In 2009, OASIS offered arts and humanities programs at Pima County branch libraries. Last fall the library introduced the OASIS Reading Club,

an adaptation of the intergenerational tutoring program to help elementary school children after school. Through the computer, arts and humanities classes and reading club, the partnership supports the Library’s strategic goals to promote lifelong learning, technology literacy and success in school.

“All libraries are moving in the direction of becoming community centers and partnering to offer more programming,” says Nancy Ledeboer, Library Director.

“OASIS provides a valuable service to the library system and the community.”

Putting Summer to Work Summer means fun in the sun for a

lot of children, but from an educator’s perspective, it means one thing: many of their young students are going to forget what they’ve learned during the school year.

“Regression is a big problem, espe­ cially during the summer,” says Kelly Tyson, principal at the City Academy, an elementary school in North St. Louis.

Tyson’s observations reflect a national trend for children across the country, especially those in underserved communities.

In a review of evidence, Cooper, Nye, Charlton, Lindsay, and Greathouse (1996) indicate that at best, students demonstrate no academic growth over the summer, and on average, there appears to be a loss of one month of grade-level equivalent skills.

The loss is much greater for students from poorer families who lack reading resources over the summer.

OASIS aims to address reading regression head-on with the Summer Tutoring Project at the City Academy.

Funded by longtime OASIS supporter Harris Frank in memory of his wife, Judy, the pilot program will pair older adults with young students for six weeks of intensive tutoring that should keep students afloat academically until the school year starts again in the fall.

The new project is the OASIS response to recent research led by Nancy Morrow-Howell of the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis. The findings show that tutoring is more effective when the number of sessions each week increases and that the benefits for the volunteers also increase.

“The innovative part of this program is the recruitment of volunteers from a population that hasn’t generally been targeted for volunteering,” says Morrow-Howell.

“People living in low-income housing communities simply haven’t been asked.”

OASIS has partnered with Urban Strategies, a non-profit organization committed to neighborhood revitalization, for help recruiting the new volunteers from five St. Louis-area low-income housing communities for seniors.

“We are committed to providing our residents with ways to keep them engaged in the community,” says Wade Baughman, Urban Strategies vice president for senior services. “OASIS programs have been a part of our offerings for a long time, and we are excited about adding this new element. Many of our residents have never had the luxury of being able to volunteer.

This project offers them an opportunity to get re-engaged in a civic issue.”

Kelly Tyson is hopeful about what the program will mean for the students.

“If children have the opportunity to maintain their skills over the summer, they can start off the new school year without having to spend so much time reviewing,” says Tyson. “We’re looking forward to seeing how this works.”

And Harris Frank, who has never done any mentoring himself, but plans to be one of the tutors for the project this summer, is also hopeful.

“I’m looking forward to learning from this experience,” he says. “This is a very exciting project that will hopefully have a national impact. My wife and I always liked living memorials.”

Making Excellent Even Better With some can-do volunteers taking the reins, the OASIS Intergenerational

Tutoring Program in the Washington, D.C., area received a boost that makes the experience even more appealing for tutors and schools.

In 2009, OASIS started a tutor leader program with suggestions from longtime tutors who were willing to share their insights on how to make the program run in a more seamless way.

“By providing the tutors with somebody to talk to at each school, we’re giving them the support they need, so they’ll want to keep coming back,” says Janet Nussbaum, a tutor leader. In her new role, Nussbaum serves as the liaison between the school and OASIS. She tends to a variety of issues—from parking, to checking on compatibility between the tutors and students, or giving a pep talk to a tutor who might be having doubts.

“Often, school administrators, teachers and school staff simply don’t have the time to address the needs or questions that come up for the volunteers,” says Myers. “The tutor leaders serve as the on-site eyes and ears at each school building. They are the go-to person.”

Myers says the Tutor Leader concept has empowered the new leaders and created a community among the tutors.

“This has opened up all kinds of communication and friendships, especially among the tutors,” says Myers. “Now, instead of going into the schools alone, they feel like they are part of a team— and they are!

Every Small Change Counts LaVerne Thompson might just start walking when the weather breaks. “Maybe I’ll be able to keep up

with my husband,” she says with a laugh, recalling a time in the not so distant past when she couldn’t even make it down the block.

“Tom’s always been fairly active, but I was a couch potato,” admits Thompson.

“I always wanted to do more.”

At 71, Thompson has had both knees replaced and open heart surgery.

Since joining the Active Start class at St. Matthias Church in South St. Louis County, Thompson feels better, both emotionally and physically.

“We go out more, and I have a better attitude about myself,” she says. “My

blood sugar levels went down about 100 points, and I have more stamina and energy.”

Her experience is not unique among older adults who add regular physical activity to their daily routines. A recent study published in The Gerontologist provides evidence that Active Start benefits sedentary, diverse older adults.

Active Start promotes physical activity for sedentary adults. It combines Active Living Every Day, a behavior change program, and ExerStart, a beginning level exercise class. Both are evidence-based and are led by lay leaders.

about behavior change, but some muchneeded encouragement.

But now I love it! I would definitely do it again.”

“One of the misconceptions people have is that aging means you will naturally feel tired,” says Ross. “Fatigue can be caused by all kinds of things: underlying health issues, boredom and lack of motivation. Once people see how easily they can make small changes, that every small change counts, they’ll seek out other ways to stay active when the class is over.”

Active Start was offered in St. Louis and Houston in 2009 with funding from the Missouri Foundation for Health and the Houston Endowment. The OASIS Institute partnered with the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging in 2004 to offer Active Start with a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging.

Ross says her role as a volunteer instructor has proven beneficial for her as well. “Initially, I was reluctant to teach the class,” she says. “Could I really do it?

In 2006, OASIS received the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Innovation in Prevention Award for Active Start. A replication report is available from the Institute.

Moving with Confidence “I think I should know my body

better than anyone else,” says Hiram Wilbourne, 75. “If we educate ourselves, we’ll be able to look after our own health better.”

Wilbourne took a Safe at Home class, part of the OASIS Free From Falls program, at Baldwin Hills OASIS in Los Angeles. He is more aware of his surroundings, and has even modified his home. “My wife and I put textured tile in our bathroom to prevent slipping, and hardwood rather than carpet on our floors, for better balance.”

The Partners in Care Foundation provides materials for OASIS Matter of Balance classes, through the California Evidence-Based Health Promotion Initiative, to reach out to underserved communities and prevent injuries. The program is supported by a grant from the California Wellness Foundation.

“Research shows that fear is a primary risk factor for falls,” says Kristie Patton, project manager at the California Health Innovation Center. “These classes offer practical skills to diminish that fear.”

Penny Brown is also applying new skills to her daily living after taking fall prevention and balance classes. “I feel a lot more confident with stairs and picking things up off the floor properly,” she says.

“I’m much more conscious of my balance.”

“Many of my students start the class moving very cautiously,” says Robert Pruitt, who teaches Better Balance. “But after they learn how to use their muscles and think about their movements, the confidence level soars! It’s evident in the way they carry themselves.”

A New Look at Aging How old would we be if we didn’t

know how old we were?

Jill Scott is 63 years old, but she says that number doesn’t match her true age, the age of her inner self.

“I feel about 38,” says Scott, who takes and teaches all kinds of classes with OASIS in Escondido, California. “There’s always something new to learn.”

Getting older doesn’t look the way it did a generation ago. Many of today’s 50-plus population expect a lot more from themselves, their communities and their lives. The need for innovative programs to support successful aging is growing as dramatically as the population of older adults, which will double from 2000 to 2030. With the pool of older adults growing both deep and wide, society must continue to adapt, to keep pace with a shifting perception of aging.

The need has spurred new OASIS partnerships to offer programs in community sites. OASIS in Escondido, California, is a perfect example of just how mutually beneficial new partnerships can be. The center has working relationships with four traditional senior centers, two senior housing communities, a library and the City of Escondido.

“When we realized we would need to move from our longtime department store location, it became clear that we were going to have to start thinking of ourselves

and potential partners in a whole new way,” says Donna Toro, executive director of OASIS Escondido.

Taking a Second Look “We’ve always prided ourselves for having a vibrant, active membership,” says Toro. “Even though OASIS and senior centers both serve older adults, it seemed like our purposes and, frankly, our participants were too different to co-exist.”

For a long time, Toro’s counterparts at the senior centers agreed. But the times have changed and so have attitudes.

“Senior centers have reinvented themselves,” says Toro. “They are no longer just places to play bingo and eat a nice lunch. There’s a shift in how they want to operate.”

Mary Dreibelbis, program manager at the McClellan Senior Center in Vista, California, where several OASIS classes are now held, agrees.

“Senior centers have been at a crossroads in the last ten years,” she says. “We are starting to bring in a younger group.

When we heard OASIS was looking for places to hold some of their classes, we were thrilled.”

City of Escondido for more than 50 years, the center serves about 400 people each day, offering lunch, activities and services such as transportation. The center recently underwent renovations. With a spruced up environment and the foot traffic generated

by OASIS members, the place has a completely different feeling.

“By bringing OASIS in, we’re open to a whole new audience,” says Amy Shipley, older adult services manager. “OASIS is bringing a new face to Joslyn. Our transportation, central location and convenient parking are attractive to OASIS members, and I think many of our older participants love seeing all of the activity here. Eyes are opening on both sides.”

The City of Escondido also makes its state-of-the art employee computer training lab located at City Hall available for OASIS classes.

“OASIS makes our communities valuable to our residents, and even more attractive to prospective residents,” says community relations coordinator Katie Ricker. “We hope that some of our new OASIS friends will consider our communities when they consider making a move.”

Escondido OASIS also has thriving partnerships with the Ed Brown Senior Center and the Rancho Penasquitos Library in San Diego, Solana Beach Senior Center, North County Bridge Center and the North County Inland Older Adult Center at Temple Adat Shalom in Poway.

Right in Your Own Backyard In 2009, Escondido OASIS formed another kind of partnership, one that puts OASIS right in the backyards of older adults living in two communities: Redwood Town Court and Redwood Terrace.

Both provide varying levels of living arrangements for older adults, from apartments, to assisted living to skilled nursing care. OASIS has found a perfect fit in each location.

Redwood Town Court’s lobby area has a bistro, street scene feel to it, complete with a gift shop, beauty shop, and now a travel desk manned by an OASIS volunteer. Redwood Terrace provides rooms for

Funding and Financial Review During 2009, the OASIS Institute staff and Board focused on the implementation of the five-year business plan with one of the three major goals focused on financial sustainability and operational efficiency. A $2.5 million grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies in 2008 provided funding to develop and implement local action plans and five-year financial projections for each OASIS city.

While the financial crisis challenged fundraising efforts across the country, The OASIS Institute working with its cities raised nearly $600,000 in support from private and corporate foundations and raised the largest amount in individual gifts since 2005.

As part of the business planning process, three locations were closed due to the lack of financial support in Hyattsville, Houston and Cleveland; grant-funded programs continued in these locations.

The OASIS Institute continued to increase its capability to offer evidence-based programs and expand technology and volunteer programs throughout the country. • The AT&T Foundation made a $1 million grant in December 2008 to help older adults in diverse and underserved areas learn and improve their technology skills and prepare to enter or re-enter the workforce.

• Other Foundations provided broad support to increase and diversify participation in partnership with organizations serving low income communities and communities of color. Examples include the Saigh Foundation in St. Louis, the Buncher Family Foundation in Pittsburgh, the Simmons Foundation in Houston and the Parsons Foundation in Los Angeles.

• Individual contributions increased to nearly $600,000. Response to the annual Friends of OASIS campaign increased by 24 percent as more than 2,000 new donors made gifts.

A total of 79 percent of expenses was directed to programs in 2009. This included 11 percent for education, 32 percent for health and wellness, 34 percent for technology and 24 percent for civic engagement programs. General, administrative and fundraising expenses amounted to 21 percent of expenditures.

OASIS is heavily focused on building a strong performance measurement system and completed the first annual participant survey in partnership with the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. This survey is one of many steps to demonstrate outcomes during these challenging times for non-profit organizations.

Mapping Memory. In Fall 2009, 15 OASIS members in West Los Angeles collaborated on a visual and poetic “memory map” of their personal stories. Artist Deborah Aschheim trained the group in multi-media techniques using watercolor, photography, words and illustrations. OASIS received an Artist-in-Residence grant from the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department for the project. The map was placed on display at the Westside Pavilion mall where viewers could trace a route through the places depicted and connect the map with their own memories.

Stimulating classes, congenial people are a winning combination Each week Elise and Frank Acree make the 86-mile round trip from their home in Belen, New Mexico, to Albuquerque OASIS. They come to volunteer, take classes and enjoy unique opportunities like “Ditchbank Walks” along the decades-old acequias that irrigate farms along the Rio Grande.

Their fellow OASIS members are a big part of the draw. “They are a real congenial bunch of people,” Frank explains, and Elise agrees. “OASIS people are friendly and eager to learn, and they don’t have to have things go their way all the time. They keep their sense of humor,” she says.

Elise maintains her sense of humor during registration as she greets hundreds of people who come through to sign up for the next class term and solves problems that come up. Frank does his part to keep things running well by attending to center maintenance — fixing what’s broken, hanging pictures, even crafting a podium.

The Acrees have been Friends of OASIS since 2001, steadily increasing their financial support. “We get so much out of it. The classes are intellectually stimulating, and OASIS has worked to keep class fees inexpensive so it attracts new people. We need to keep it affordable and growing,” Elise says.
