HONEYCOMB

PILLOW What does a pillow provde? What does it take away?

The challenge of this project was to design a pillow that offers more than what a tradi onal pillow offers.

I focused on what the tradi onal pllow negates. It takes away hearing and peripheral vision from one side of our head. It also has germ build-up from dead skin cells over a period of me. My solu on to these problems was to use various sizes of mesh and create an enclouse that would end up resembling a honeycomb. The mesh allows for air flow and undisturbed vision and hearing. The meshed is stretched out when applied to allow for a so surface when one uses it to lie downThe thickness of mesh corresponds to the placement on ones head. For example, the thinest of the mesh would be where ones eyes are located so not to impair vision. The enclosure also opens in various ways to serve dierent func ons as shown below.

Typology: Health Center in Louis Sullivan’s Bayard-Condict Building Role: Designer

Designed in 1899 by iconic Louis Sullivan, the Bayard- Condict building serves as the site for a health center with a diverse program. The various and very diverse program brief presented a challenge in how to eec vely arrange the space while creatnga sense of a unified design.

The driving force of laying out this plan was how to arrange the programs in terms of publc and private. The private programs, such as the doctor’s office and locker rooms are behind closed dividers, while the public spaces, such as the yoga, are ed in to the open areas in the plan. The diagram below s scale showing the order of programs from public to private. The differing sizes of icons show the square footage in rela on to the other programs.

One of my challenges was making the space feel as one with all of the diereing programs. My solu on was to create an anchorng archiectural element that would e the programs in to a single unifying space. I felt that the stair would be the best opportunity to ntegrate this soluton. The stair serves as the recep on area and break away space with its built in integrated sea ng. The stairs also spil into the other programs and molds into built in desk’s and sea ng for those specific areas. This is shown in the plan below. To the right is a sec on cu ng through the space displaying how the stairs func on and interact with the space. To the bo om right is a physical built model of the stairs.

Atop the stair sits the yoga space. I wanted the yoga space to feel free and open, which is why I placed it by the main facade on the second level of the health center.

The yoga space is at the top most level of the bulding, so it takes advantage of the view of lower manha an and the natural ligh ng illumna ng the space.

Typology: Office design located in Mies Van Der Rohe’s Seagram Building Role: Designer

Located at the iconic Seagram Building at midtown is the site of this modern day office. This goal was to explore current and furture work habits and apply them to the workspace, crea ng a meless environment. The space is for a fic onal Adver sing agency, which I created, and the challege was to design the space that would effec vely fit how an ad agency operates.

The main focuses for determining the plan were private worksta ons, team and collaboraton areas, and public and break away spaces. I used the team and collabora on spaces to serve as a buer between the break away space and and the individual work sta ons. I felt it was important to give distance between the worksta ons and break spaces to eec vely give the workers a sense of relief from their computer monitors and wo

The heart of the oďŹƒce rests at the center of the space. It serves as a n open space for interac on and mee ngs for the workers. This was placed at the center of the space to serves as a display to poten al clients. Adver sing is all about crea ng a story and connec ng with the audience. The open display of workspace is meant to give poten al clients a feeling of being immersed in the interac on and story telling taking place.

The center of the space is double height to creat a connec on with the en re oďŹƒce. It visually connects most of the program. Break away and mee ng spaces line the top of the double height, with a modular sea ng system si ng at the base.
