July 6-8 Sculptural Felting: Soft & Sensational

Shana Kohnstamm

attended a wet-felting workshop in 2010 that ignited a passion for making beautiful, strange and technically complex wool sculptures. Since then, her work has been featured in fiber art magazines & books, juried and invitational exhibitions, and has earned awards in regional art exhibitions. She curated an international soft sculpture exhibit in Nashville in 2015 and was invited by Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts to teach Sculptural Felting in 2015 and 2018 workshops. Shana has explored a variety of creative careers, including stained glass design and fabrication, bead and jewelry making, theatrical painting, and even briefly apprenticed as an ocularist before turning her attention once again to making fine art.

This workshop will focus on the interplay of wet-felting and needle-felting techniques to produce soft sculpture. We will utilize the plasticity of the wool itself to build complex and dynamic forms, which will be needle-felted and then given a wet-felt finish. In addition, students will learn to make wet-felted pre-felt sheets, surface design elements and finishing techniques. No previous felting knowledge is required, but those students who already know one technique are encouraged to delve into the other. Demonstrations and structural problem solving will lead to independent exploration by the students. Please note that both techniques require repetitive arm and hand motion.
