Fall 2021 Community Education Classes

PSAD Fall 2021 Community Education classes for ages 14 and above.

Wheel Throwing (4 morning classes) September 18, 19, 25, and 26; 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m Cost: $146 (includes $10 fee for supplies and firing of the pieces and $18 plus tax for clay.)

PSAD Ceramics/Small Metals Building, 919 Madison Street, Lower Town Instructor: Mitch Kimball This class will focus on utilizing the potter’s wheel to create functional (cups, bowls, plates, etc.) and non-functional works (sculptural). Students will be using local clay and glazes, as well as faux finishing techniques to finish their projects. All skill levels are welcome.

Screenprinting (6 morning classes) September 18, 25, October 2, 9, 16, and 23, 2021; 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Cost: $148 (includes $10 material fee) 2D and Graphic Design Building • 905 Harrison Street, Room 110 Instructor: Erich Neitzke, PSAD adjunct instructor This class introduces students to the basics of screenprinting as a fine arts medium. Students will learn to prepare images using digital positives, coat screens, register, and print multiple color images.

Fundamentals of Wood Working (4 evening classes) September 22, 23, 29 and 30; 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Cost: $130 (includes a $50 supply fee) PSAD Sculpture Building, 919 Madison Street Instructor: Wyatt Severs, woodworker and PSAD studio technician Woodworking is about accuracy. Proper alignment and tuning keeps the tool working smoothly and safely. This class will train you to set up and use basic wood working equipment. Our main focus will be on how to correctly use the jointer, planer, table saw, band saw, sander and drill press. With this knowledge, you will achieve cleaner cuts and better surfaces for glue joints and fine finishes. Each student will practice these techniques through the building of a cutting board and in doing so will learn how to avoid burning wood, inaccurate cuts, and unsafe usage of equipment.

Women Artists From the Renaissance to Today (3 morning classes) October 30, November 6 and 13; 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Cost: $45 (includes supplies and studio fee) 2D and Graphic Design Building, 905 Harrison Street, Room 208 Instructor: Megan Robertson, PSAD adjunct instructor Take a crash course in art history by learning about some of the most influential female artists of the past 500 years. While this class will feature well known figures like Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keefe, we will also explore the art and impact of artists who may be less familiar. The Baroque painter Artemesia Gentileschi portrayed fierce female figures from the Bible in dramatic light and shadow.

Modernist Sonia Delaunay created colorful paintings and environments that spoke to the soul. Contemporary artist Carrie Mae Weems uses photography to confront the past and interrogate the present.

This approachable class will introduce you to key artistic movements and how women have made their mark on the art world.

Figure Drawing November 6, 13, 20, 27, December 4, and 11; 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (6 morning classes) Cost: $105 (includes model fees) 2D and Graphic Design Building • 905 Harrison Street, Room 203 Instructor: Instructor: Erich Neitzke, PSAD adjunct instructor This class offers the opportunity to refine your drawing skills while working from the clothed and nude figure. Students may work in the media of their choice using their own materials. Drawing sessions will include both short and long poses from a variety of models.

Kids Furniture Class - Lets Make Furniture! (2 evening classes) October 20 and 21; 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m.

Cost: $80 (includes a $50 supply fee plus tax for chair kit) PSAD Sculpture Building, 919 Madison Street Instructor: Wyatt Severs, woodworker and PSAD studio technician This will be a fun class of exploring the ideas of assemblage; thinking and talking about how things are made. With glue and clamps we will design and build your own chair. The only thing this class requires is a passion to explore and create!
