Introduction
At its best, the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce is a place where many hands make for light work. We find great joy in our mission to connect business and community to make Dickinson a great place to live, work, and raise a family, and we are proud to partner again with The Dickinson Press in producing a printed member directory. This allows us shine the spotlight on our five volunteer committees and to recap nearly 118 years of history in our community. With that being said, it’s time to meet the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce.

Board of Directors
As we work to promote a progressive business environment, the Chamber is governed by a 12 to 15 member volunteer Board of Directors that seeks to represent all sectors of the local economy. Committee volunteers are often regarded as strong prospects to join our board, as they have gained familiarity with the work of the Chamber through their service. Our board plans our Annual Banquet, which carries well over 100 years of tradition while honoring our community’s best in the form of “Chamber Choice Awards.” Our board meets on the third Wednesday afternoon of each month, with a September retreat that helps launch our membership renewal campaign at the beginning of October.

Governmental Relations Committee
The importance of healthy relationships between our citizens and our elected officials cannot be overstated. This committee seeks to provide opportunities for business leaders in our community to engage with those who make policy decisions at the state and local levels. Our events
are uniquely programmed around North Dakota’s biennial legislative sessions, and they include candidate forums, “Coffee with the Legislators,” and Southwest Night in Bismarck. Finally, our annual State of the City Luncheon features our mayor and regularly draws 250 attendees.
Professional Development Committee
In a highly mobile and global society, companies are hiring for culture and training for skills as needed. Our committee members collaborate with our members to identify gaps and offer opportunities to our members and to the community at large. Sponsored monthly Lunch and Learn sessions are free to attend as a member benefit. Additionally, our Develop Dickinson subcommittee offers quarterly programming that includes a fall Women’s Leadership Summit along with our popular Corporate Cup, a celebration of team-building and fun in
the workplace. Meanwhile, Leadership Dickinson offers twelve high school seniors the opportunity to explore the sectors of the local economy on one Wednesday each month, inspiring many to continue their education locally or to return to our community and raise a family. Finally, we are in the midst of rebranding our midsummer youth-oriented event, where dozens of elementary students and their families have sold lemonade and other refreshments while learning valuable lessons about entrepreneurship, creativity and customer service!

Ambassadors Committee
This committee serves to offer a warm welcome and a boost to the newest businesses in our community. Ribbon cutting ceremonies are offered on the second Thursday afternoon of each month, and they encompass a variety of celebrations including grand openings, ownership and location changes, and major milestones. This committee is also responsible for our annual golf scramble at Heart River Golf Course in mid-July. Our large network of Ambassadors surely offers someone who speaks your language and knows your industry!

History
In 1881, the city of Dickinson was named for its founder, W. S. Dickinson of Malone, New York. He was the agent of the Northern Pacific Railway responsible for marketing the company’s lands and plotting towns in the Dakota Territory. North Dakota achieved statehood on November 2nd, 1889, and Dickinson grew to a population of 2,076 by the 1900 census.
By 1906, the community’s early business leaders united in a collaborative effort to host an annual community banquet and to elect leadership that would serve the interests of the greater business community. Thus, the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce was born.
The archives at the Dickinson Museum Center provide a glimpse at the work of the Chamber through the years, along with common themes that have guided our community. Awards presented at the 50th Annual Banquet in 1956 were presented against a backdrop reading “Dickinson: The Friendly City with a Future.” We remain friendly and forward-looking to this day.
Carter Fong | Executive Director, 2021-present | Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce
Our best records indicated that membership peaked at nearly 550 in the early 2000s under Executive Director Rich Wardner, who came to the Chamber after decades as a teacher, coach and administrator in the Dickinson Public Schools. District 37 Senator Wardner went on to a distinguished career in state politics as the Republican majority leader. Though officially retired, he remains very active in our community at the time of this writing. Today, the Dickinson Area Chamber has adapted to changing dynamics as society becomes more global and mobile. Just over 450 businesses, individual entrepreneurs and nonprofits claim membership in our local Chamber. Membership dues fund well over half of our annual budget, while event registrations comprise the remaining amount. Currently, two full-time and two part-time staff members work with our volunteers to host more than 30 community events per year.
Some Dickinson residents might say that they are content to have a job and a
house in our town. At the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce, we find the fruits of our labor in those who would say that they’ve established a career and a home in our community. It’s a difference that you can see and feel in our Friendly City with a Future, and we are grateful to all of those who have supported our efforts through the years.
Promotions Committee
Shopping locally is at the heart of the Chamber’s mission, and this committee is always working on the next fun and creative promotional theme. Each fall, our “Ladies Night Out” draws hundreds to our local merchants to get a head start on Christmas shopping, culminating with prize drawings in the heart of downtown Dickinson. Meanwhile, our Harvest Festival and Trick or Trunk events provide our members the opportunity to get in front of large crowds and young families. Finally, we work with our members to host Business After Hours on the second Tuesday evening of each month as a networking event that is free for all to attend!

Agriculture Committee
Our agriculture committee seeks to foster the love of the land, and the labor that is required to bring a meal from field to table. Agriculture remains a pillar of our local economy, and this committee’s yearround programming serves to help educate students and adults alike, while offering a seasonal “thank you” to our farmers and ranchers. Banquet in a Field is our marquee event of the summer, drawing VIP attendees from all sectors of the economy to sample menu items representing up to 15 local commodities.
2025 Chamber Committee Profiles
Any nonprofit is only as strong as its volunteer base, and the Chamber is no different. Our committees meet once per month and as needed around their major events, and they meet in person with a virtual option available as well.
Our exceptional volunteers utilize their time and talents to benefit the community by serving on one of our volunteer committees. Many hands make for light work, and we are always looking to add new committee members.
