BEVERLY Nicknamed the “Garden City” and less than 30 miles from Boston, Beverly has a unique personality – small town charm coupled with a city identity that includes several communities in picturesque settings.

B

everly Farms, a vibrant oceanfront community with a population of about 3,500, “officially” extends from Manchester-by-the-Sea to Prides Crossing and has a thriving downtown area. West Beach, the local community beach, is especially busy during the summer. Although a private beach owned by residents of Beverly Farms and Prides Crossing, current residents of the areas are entitled to beach permits.

Beverly Cove, which is approximately one square mile, is regarded as the oldest neighborhood in Beverly. The Cove has an active neighborhood association.

Commuter Rail, “Prides” has no formal boundaries. Most locals consider it to exist between numbers 407 and 600 Hale Street.

Prides Crossing is an historic area between Beverly Farms and Beverly Cove. Aside from a stop on the MBTA

Originally farming communities, Beverly Farms and Prides Crossing were discovered in the late 18th and early 19th

Centuries by wealthy residents of Boston and New York City who built summer cottages along the seashore. Only a few of the original mansions, which were nearly the size and stature of those in Newport, Rhode Island, remain in the neighborhood today.

Beverly Farms also has its own “trivia” claim to fame. In 1907, Beverly Hills, California was named after Beverly Farms, which was a vacation spot of President William Howard Taft. With easy access to Route 128, five commuter rail stations, a municipal golf course and an airport, Beverly is a convenient place to work, visit or live.

DANVERS Nestled between Beverly and Salem on the Danvers River and only 13.3 square miles, Danvers is considered a “small” city. That may be true in terms of physical size – but this city lives large.

I

n addition to a bustling downtown, a shopping center and easy access to several major highways, Danvers has numerous open space and recreational opportunities, including a vibrant marina and Endicott Park. A 4.3-mile rail trail links schools, downtown Danvers, parks, residential areas, and trails in the neighboring towns of Peabody, Wenham and Topsfield.

Although Danvers present (and future) is exciting, the primarily

witch trials of 1692. In fact, Danvers has the second most First

architectural heritage of old New England. Once known as

historic Rebecca Nurse House. The Danvers Archival Center is an

residential community retains much of the hominess and Salem Village in the 17th Century, over a dozen homes date

from that era, many of which were associated with the infamous

“Foodie” facts. Danvers has a unique food connection! The oldest living pear tree, planted in 1630 by John Endicott is located in Danvers. The city also owes its nickname, “Oniontown” to the commercial success of the Yellow Globe Danvers Onion created by Danial and David Buxton in the 1840s.

GLOUCESTER Even after almost 400 years, Gloucester is among the busiest fishing ports on the Eastern seaboard and its memorial to Gloucester fishermen, the iconic “Man at the Wheel,” is internationally known.

T

oday, fishing is only one of Gloucester’s many industries. Settled in 1623, the city is America’s oldest seaport with one of the finest harbors in Massachusetts. Pristine beaches and water activities such as stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, fishing and the always exciting whale

watching excursion attract visitors from all over the world. Gloucester also has a well-known reputation in the arts. Since the early 19th Century, Rocky Neck, one of America’s oldest continuously working art colonies, has attracted countless accomplished artists such as Milton Avery, Nell Blaine, Winslow Homer, and Childe Hassam. The town’s scenic beauty, active harbor and rugged coastline continue to inspire artists today. Several quaint villages with unique personalities – Lanesville, Annisquam and Magnolia – are nestled within the city’s boundaries. Once known for its fishing and granite quarrying industries, today Lanesville hosts popular annual events like the Lanesville Music Festival and Art in Lanesville exhibition. The 1801 Annisquam Harbor Light Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and charming Magnolia, which is home to Hammond Castle, has majestic views of Cape Ann.

Gorton’s of Gloucester. Gloucester is also well-known for its nationally recognized seafood business founded in 1849 as John Pew & Sons, which became Gorton’s of Gloucester in 1957.

HAMILTON & WENHAM Often called “sister” towns because of their geographical proximity to one another, Hamilton and Wenham have a unique relationship in the land of Yankee individualism.

H

amilton, which was initially part of Ipswich called “The Hamlet,” became a village when

a stagecoach road from Boston to Newburyport (Bay Road) came through the area in 1640. Eventually known as at the Third Parish of Ipswich, the area was incorporated in 1793 as Hamilton – yes, for Alexander Hamilton.

Today, the peaceful suburb has a compact, but lively downtown area, beautiful residential neighborhoods and pastoral landscapes with old stone walls on winding, tree-lined roads. It is also renowned for its rich equestrian heritage that includes an eight-mile loop known as the Discover Hamilton Trail. Myopia Hunt Club holds frequent events such as Sunday afternoon polo and hosts an annual Thanksgiving Day fox hunt open to the public. Wenham, on the other hand, was originally part of Salem but became

“independent,” i.e., incorporated as a town, in 1643. Agriculture was the primary industry for many years, but by the mid-1800s Wenham had a number of shoe shops that did piece work for the shoe factories in Danvers and Peabody. In 1842, however, the establishment of Wenham Lake Ice Company introduced a new “luxury” industry. Wenham Ice became a symbol of purity around the world and was especially popular in Britain where rumor has it that Queen Victoria used the ice. For a short time, Norwegian ice exporters even renamed the Norwegian Lake Oppegård to

“Sister” Towns Like sisters, the two communities share a number of practical public institutions including a highly rated school system, a library, recreation department, newspaper, and even an MBTA commuter rail station.

Wenham Lake so they could trade ice from the Norwegian lake as ice from Wenham Lake. Up until the early 20th Century, approximately 6,000 railroad cars transported some 30,000 tons of harvested ice annually to Boston Harbor where it was shipped across the ocean. In the 21st Century, Wenham retains much of its unique historic character and tranquil rural scenery. A town of many open views of farm lands, lakes and woodlands, the 377-year-old community has nearly 300 acres of parks, playgrounds, and recreational lands.

IPSWICH “Something for everyone” might well be the town motto for Ipswich. Be it history, outdoor attractions – created by Mother Nature or man-made – or a plethora of legendary restaurants, this coastal community is beloved by townies and visitors alike.

eflecting a rich heritage that stretches back to its founding in the 1600’s, Ipswich has more “First Period” houses (1620-1720) than any other town in the nation as well as several national historic districts. LYNNFIELD “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow” is an apt description for the town of Lynnfield!

O

ne of the most prosperous suburbs on the North Shore today, Lynnfield was first settled in 1638, made a district separate from Lynn in 1782 and officially incorporated in 1814. The town retains a historic New England tradition – the open town meeting model with a Board of Selectmen overseeing town operations.

Lynnfield is also a treasure trove of interesting New England trivia. The stagecoach line from Boston to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, known locally as the “Newburyport Turnpike”, ran through South Lynnfield. Later this roadway became U.S. Route 1, bringing many people to the small town during the post-World War II population surge. Horse shows and ballroom dancing were among the town’s attractions.

Lynnfield Center had limited commuter rail service via the Boston & Maine Railroad into the late 1950s/early 1960s with a small boarding platform located not far from the current Town Hall offices. Today, a wide variety of public and private educational opportunities as well as recreational activities continue to draw residents to the community.

Go Fish. Wiling away an hour angling for Largemouth bass, Bluegill or even the Common Carp (or more depending on your luck), is easy in Lynnfield. Grab your pole and head to the pond at Newhall Community Park.

MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA Did you know Manchester was settled by English Colonists in 1629? Or that it was a fishing community for over 200 years? Or that it has seven beaches – one of which is musical?

I

n the mid 19th Century, some 200 years after humble beginnings, Manchester began to attract artists like Winslow Homer and poets such as Richard Henry Dana, Sr. who were eager to escape the hustle and bustle of Boston. Over the next 50 years, so many wealthy Bostonians built massive “summer cottages” along the shoreline that the area came to be known as The Gold Coast attracting presidents, ambassadors, politicians,

sportsmen, and countless legendary figures of the late 19th and early 20th Century.

More than just a place to avoid the sweltering summer heat of Boston, Manchester offered a wealth of outdoor attractions. Coolidge Reservation, for example, which is set high on a peninsula known as Coolidge Point, comes with incredible views of rocky

outcrops left as a result of glaciers that once covered this area and melted at the end of the Ice Age. Woodlands, wetlands, sandy beach and gorgeous ocean lawn plus a variety of wildlife and vegetation overlooking the Atlantic Ocean were among the memorable views. Today that same unforgettable vista has expanded to include Boston. Visitors to Manchester – then and now – could do more than look at the water. With seven beaches, Manchester is a swimmer’s paradise. Singing Beach, which is known far and wide up and down the New England coast is especially noteworthy.

This fine, white sand beach makes a musical sound when walked upon. One local legend says a distinct sound was first noticed as the leather shoes of nannies escorting youngsters shuffled across the sand. Sailing to and from several small islands and coves such as Kettle Cove, Kettle Island and Great and Little Misery Islands and their sandy beaches remain popular pastimes. The town recently added a transient dock for visiting boaters, who can now tie up and have direct access to the center of town, which is no longer just a summer oasis.

An Idyllic Setting. Today, Manchester is a vibrant, well-established residential community with an excellent school system and a broad diversity of local businesses. Its beautiful ocean coastline, architecture and small-town feel has made it a favored setting for many movies including “Manchester By the Sea.” 14

MARBLEHEAD A tiny town with only 4.4 square miles of land and 15 miles of coastline, Marblehead is super rich in history. Known as the birthplace of the United States Navy, the town has its own special flower – Hollyhocks – its own cookie, Joe Frogger and its own anthem, Marblehead Forever.

D

rawn by the abundance of fish just off the coast, English seafarers arrived at Massebequash, the Native American Naumkeag tribe’s settlement in the early 1600’s. Described by the King’s Royal Agent as “….the Greatest Towne for Fishing in New England,” the fishing industry prospered for 200 years with a fleet of nearly 100 vessels.

At the onset of the American Revolution in 1775 and at the request of General George Washington and Congress, Col. John Glover commissioned five vessels (including his own ship, Hannah) into what he called “ye navy” – a naval fleet ready to take on the powerful British Navy. Three were captained and crewed by Marblehead mariners. In 1814, Marblehead rescued the Navy’s oldest commissioned ship, USS Constitution, being pursued by two British frigates. Crewmen from Marblehead piloted her to shelter in the harbor at Fort Sewall where loaded

cannons surprised the British forcing them to retreat. “First in ’61” – Marblehead was the first regiment in the state to answer the call for troops in the Civil War. After the civil war, Marblehead’s passion for the water focused on sailing for pleasure and competition. Within a few years, the town was the starting and finishing port for national and international competitions that attracted yachtsmen from around the world. Events like Marblehead Race Week that dates to 1889 and the race between Marblehead and Halifax, Nova Scotia, which began in 1905, earned it the title of

“Yachting Capital of the World.” In the 20th Century, Marblehead gave birth to marine aviation. Starling Burgess, who designed and built the first biplane at his boatyard, took his initial test in The Flying Fish in 1911. In the 21st Century, the Navy turned again to Marblehead for boats. RIBCRAFT was asked to manufacture boats for tactical operations, security patrols and anti-terrorism force protection. Today, even as many residents continue to make their living as fishermen and lobstermen, boating remains a favorite past time.

MIDDLETON As Middleton was tucked between two important 17th Century towns – Salem and Andover – geography proved to be the determining factor for the town’s name.

A

lmost 400 years later and the addition of Boston as a new “anchor” town, Middleton’s name and location are still relevant. The town is only a 30-minute drive to the Hub. Over the years, as people flocked to this 14.4-square-mile suburban site, Middleton earned a reputation for being welcoming and is often characterized as a “small community in a single neighborhood.”

Back in the day, however, Middleton was a successful farming community. In fact, people of Salem called Middleton residents “the farmers” and, while local historians agree the term was applicable, they note the farms were “on a generous

scale with homesteads of hundreds of acres.” Bray Wilkins who came from Salem or Lynn (depending on who tells the tale) in the 1650’s with a large family is one example. Wilkins started his farm with 600 acres purchased from Massachusetts Governor Richard Bellingham. Iron working was another prevalent industry, albeit on a smaller scale. An enterprise stated by Thomas Flint (Jr. and Sr.) of Salem, John How of Boxford and Thomas Cave, Jr. of Topsfield at the beginning of the 18th Century lasted for about 70 years. During those years, Middleton was known for its vital ironworks industry.

In the 21st Century, healthcare and educational opportunities are among a wide variety of industries driving new economic growth. Between the late 18th Century and the mid-19th Century, vacationers from areas such as Lawrence and Lowell discovered the town and its many waterways and green spaces. Several brooks feed into the Ipswich River throughout town, and the town also has two large ponds, Middleton Pond and Andover Meadow Pond, and several smaller ones. Portions of Harold Parker State Forest and Boxford State Forest are within the town along with the Peabody Reservation, Sanford Reservation and Middleton Conservation Land.

Fast Fact. Coming in around the 400-year mark, Middleton has one of the oldest trees in Massachusetts.

PEABODY In the 21st Century, three major geographical areas of businesses – Centennial Park, the Northshore Mall and downtown – reflect Peabody’s wide range of industries that include technology, healthcare and financial services.

eventual loss of that industry significantly affected the city’s economic base, Peabody recovered and grew

quickly due to a diversity of other business. Its location at the nexus of Route 128, Route 1 and I-95 provides easy access for employers and employees.

SALEM Salem’s nickname “Witch City” – earned because of the city’s role as the location of the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692 –hardly tells the whole story of this vibrant waterfront community that dates to 1626.

T

he pedestrian friendly city that attracts over a million visitors each year (about 500,000 in October) is also well known for its many outstanding examples of Federalist period residences and buildings, many designed by noted Salem architect Samuel McIntire. In fact, Chestnut Street, a haven for wealthy mariners and their families, has so many examples immortalized in

postcards, painting and films that it was acclaimed the “most beautiful street in America.”

The Peabody-Essex Museum is another Salem jewel. Established in 1799, the world-renowned organization has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating and collecting museum in the United States. PEM also holds one of the world’s largest and most-comprehensive collection of cross-cultural art from Asia.

Did you know…

In addition to a growing restaurant and shopping scene, the city has easy public transportation access to many surrounding North Shore communities and Boston via bus and the MBTA commuter train plus direct ferry service to Boston.

Salem is the birthplace of the National Guard, established on December 13, 1636 when the Massachusetts General Court in Salem required all able-bodied men between 16 and 60 to join the militia. 22
