Kenny Wheeler exhibition: On 16th April, the Royal Academy of Music will open a new exhibition entitled Kenny Wheeler: Master of Melancholy Chaos. Telling the 83year old trumpeter’s story through seven milestone recordings, the exhibition features a wealth of hitherto unseen articles and artefacts, from original scores, personal notes and sketches and memorabilia, accompanied by a series of recordings of recent interviews. He follows in the footsteps of the crooner legends as well as more modern singers like Harry Connick Jr. and Jamie Cullum, with a classy mixture of modern band that, while undoubtedly slick, largely avoids the charges of excessive ‘smoothness’ that can often be levelled at such music. Strong’s arrangements are fresh and punchy, and his vocals and piano playing are well suited to the material on offer. Hippodrome Casino on 18th April – perhaps not quite Sinatra at the Sands, but Strong has a promising future that could lead anywhere…
