10 of Soul has been performing high-energy shows in the Quad Cities area for many years, and we’ve recently been able to entice them to the Corridor for shows at Jazz Under the Stars and Taste of Jazz. Several members of the band also participate in KCCK’s jazz education programs as band members and guest artists.

THE KIRKWOOD JAZZ COMBO

The Kirkwood jazz program has a long and distinguished history, led throughout the years by gifted teachers like Tim Feldkamp, Ray Salucka, Al Naylor, Joe Perea, and Fred Kiser. But this is the first time the program has been directed by a Kirkwood Alum! Blake Shaw began his music education at Kirkwood before moving on to the University of Iowa for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He is in the final semester of a temporary appointment as director of the jazz bands. The Kirkwood Jazz Combo is comprised of students from Kirkwood’s Jazz Improvisation II class.

Bass – Avi Seguel, Patrick Seaton Guitar – John Abolins, Ian Landuyt Saxophone – Doug Larison

KCCK JAZZ EDUCATION PROGRAMS –ROLE MODEL FOR THE NATION

Our future lies in the hands of our children. This is true even more so for the future of jazz. Without vigorous support from dedicated fans, the future of America’s Music is bleak.

This is why since 2000, KCCK has invested in the future of jazz by developing a three-pronged jazz education program that serves over 5,000 students each year. Beginning in kindergarten, students are exposed to jazz from a live band in Schoolhouse Jazz. In middle school, kids can come to the Kirkwood campus for a week-long Jazz Band Camp staffed by the best teachers in Iowa. And in high school, the Corridor Jazz Project records all of our area high school bands for a CD, in a program called “the crown jewel of jazz education in Iowa” by the Iowa Bandmasters Association.

Nearly all of our programs come at no cost to schools or participants. But they’re not cheap to produce.

As corporate funding dries up, and federal funding is on the chopping block, the only way KCCK can keep our jazz education programs going is by turning to you. Please bid generously tonight at the silent auction, or take advantage of one of the sponsorship opportunities that will be offered to you.

The future of jazz depends on it!
