THE LEARNING SERIES PRIMER
ERCEIVING SSIMILATING ARNESSING SCERTAINING ASTERING Academic Department July – August 2022
WELCOME TO PAHAM
Coming out of the 2022 MCU Academic Summit, the Academic Department presents PAHAM. Paham is an ancient Filipino term and a derivative of old Sanskrit language which means a learned individual – a scholar or someone who has an expertise in his/her field and has achieved a certain level of self-actualization.
Like the “Dalit ng MCU” which describes what the University offers to nation-building as an educational institution, PAHAM aims for the “True North” which best describes an individual’s learning experience in the University. PAHAM is MCU’s learning journey. This describes the kind of student’s participation, the level of engagement, the access to different learning resources and assessment being part of the university’s access to education, gearing towards a modern and non-traditional way of learning experience. These are MCU’s answer to a modern-day challenge in education adding some flavors to the manner of its delivery and touch to give the learning experience an exclusive personality for the MCU Way. To make it uniquely an MCU-owned learning journey, the actual learning experience is described as Perceiving, Assimilating, Harnessing, Ascertaining, and Mastering or PAHAM that students need to undergo, and a learner-centered approach to learning with the aid of the learning curators and facilitators – the MCU Faculty. The idea of the True North of MCU is the destination that the University wants for its students – Mastery Learning, Graduation, Licensure Performance, and Empowered Individuals, all forming part of MCU Transformative Learning Journey. The PAHAM Training for MCU Educators is designed to train the trainers to undergo a Transformative Learning Journey that includes reflection on the return to onsite learning, the application of new learning modalities in teaching, the employing of rubrics as part of the assessing the learners, the use of flipped classroom, and the familiarization to the Centralino Pitstop. We encourage everyone to participate in the discussions as we witness a first-hand learning transformation through PAHAM.
The Manila Central University given its experiences during the pandemic, decided to adapt multiple learning modalities to ensure better learning experiences, learning continuity, and to promote mastery learning. The combination of modalities shall employ limited and modified students’ participation, access to learning resources, activities, and assessments. The multiple learning modalities is coined as MCU PAHAM, it is envisioned to promote independent learning, flexible, and engaging student experiences, efficient use of resources, and development of new pedagogical capabilities. The significant key elements of the MCU PAHAM learning modality are a well-planned course scheme of work with purposefully-designed rubrics for assessment, and the use of flipped classroom.
