CARE NETWORKS

A reconsideration of care related infastructure This project focuses on the dialogue between hard and soft neighborhood scale infrastructure. Through our research it became apparent that many of the services categorized under soft infrastructure—child care, health care, cleaning, and cooking, have little dialogue with the people they directly impact. There is a disconnection between the planning and the implementation of soft infrastructure, which the project identifies as an opportunity to bridge them. Our project proposes the implementation of soft infrastructure as a care network at a neighborhood scale. Care Networks are defined by prioritizing the conditions of working families that often take the responsibility of being in the workforce in addition to work at home. The networks offer accessibility, connections, support programming, and proximity to support themselves at a close distance. From the analysis we chose a location in a Bryan,TX, primarily residential neighborhood. The specific sites, or lots, were then chosen by analyzing their vacancy, proximity, street hierarchy, and size. Our proposal includes a daycare, a shared cooking facility and laundromat, housing, work/ study spaces, a healthcare facility and lastly a recreational center, that are interconnected through pathways and the existing public infrastructure. The architecture of the buildings is proposed in material dialogue with the existing texture, and scale of the residential neighborhood.

TEXAS A&M VISITOR CENTER The Front Door of A&M

Our approach to this project aims to integrate the Aggie Tradition in all aspects though a network of triangulation. But what does that mean for us and the client? Triangulation defines our circulation and wayfinding. The shape of the triangle also informs our structure, roof condition and hierarchy of spaces.

At the beginning of the process we wanted to understand the relationship between our site and other aggie landmarks and amenities that would be on the tours and how we could facilitate as a connection between them. We also wanted to understand the circulation around the site and how it impacts and connects to the on-site circulation.

After we had established this vocabulary, we iterated the form many times and ended with the shape on the upper right. This provided both the spaces and type of circulation we wanted through the space.

THE CATALAN STREET The Catalan Vault at an untraditional scale

As Barcelona has grown, the importance allocated to the public space provided by its streets has remained the same. The Rambla, Gran Via, the Cathedral Square and many other spaces are catalysts for movement, gathering and wandering. Our project brings this narrative to the neighborhood of Gracia by celebrating its heritage.

Inspired by the classic catalan vaults and ceramics, this project utilizes the crossing of two atypical vaults as the circulation and structure.

The gesture of the vaults reach a 6.5 meter height and a span of 50 meters and are encased in the classic clay brick of the region which contributes to the sustainable aspects of the project. This project introduces an open space within the dense context of the Gracia neighborhood. The grand entrance invites the community to enter the space below the vaults or walk above them. This structure is supported by steel beams and girders encased in a double shell of ceramic tiling made up of a singular vault on top and a series of vaults below.

The double shell and light wells reduce the weight of the traditionally heavy system. The crossing of the vaults provides structural stability and a unique circulation. They act as both roof and ground, creating a diverse set of spaces to explore and experience. Such as the paths above the vaults, the market on the ground floor and the water feature and market below. The ceramic brick extends beyond the vaults and site to blur the line between neighborhood and project which allows for an easy transition from street to the above ground market. Overall the project is centered around the traditional catalan vault and the untraditional scale that provides the structure and circulation.

COMMON SENSE

The merging of human and non-human This project explores the interaction between human and non human agencies. These agents interpret their respective environments differently. The human agency perceives elements through a cultural and social lens, identifying elements of the assembly through familiarity. The non-human agency, the Artificial Intelligence, is incapable of understanding any imbued symbolism and focuses on interpreting the material and composition in a more methodical way.

While the AI does have an input of intentional bias, it’s based on a convolutionary layered relationship, where it derives and synthesizes relationships based on materiality. Due to their distinct goals and interpretations, when forced to collide and confront each other, they create an autonomous reaction: a metamorphic field of perception, which is visually represented through the leakage.

There are various perceptions for this collision: solidified, gaseous and liquified states.

This constantly changing and adapting substance erodes, creates and defines spaces.

These repurposed interior spaces actualize the AI’s ability to analyze, organize and store algorithmic patterns from its understanding of industrial materiality. After the AI studies the material, and has no need for it, the excess debris is discarded from the industrial artifact and stored into a data archive, which creates the ground. Overall, the colliding and fluctuating enigma explores and bridges both perceptions together through its very nature.

CIRCLES OF COMMUNITY A community center for the Third Ward in Houston, TX The youth cultural community center transgresses the Third Ward community through urban connections, circulation, and individualism.

The site is located in the Third Ward of Houston, next to the Project Row Houses.

Each of the caricatures incorporates both curved and rectilinear forms in order to create a complex relationship between the buildings. By transgressing the elements of a shotgun house, we were able to repurpose them in a unique way that relates to the overall community. The subtractions in the forms recall the exterior to interior transition spaces (the porch) already existent in the shotgun houses. These dynamic relationships are represented throughout the site (art studio, music studio, welcome center, and pavilion) in order to create balance and unity within the buildings.

The circulation created by the circle packing allows for a fluid and intuitive flow of circulation.

The open space acts as an outdoor corridor that connects the “rooms” each building represents.

This relationship mirrors the diverse nature of housing in the Third Ward. The juxtaposing relationship between the curves, linear elements, solids, and voids, creates a complex transition between extroverted and introverted spaces. Some spaces throughout the site encourage interaction, while other spaces are more private. These spaces are further defined by the use of hedges in creating security and privatization.
