DIORAMAS, DOMESTICITY AND DISPLAY TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING WINTER 2016 - THESIS STUDIO ADVISOR: KEITH MITNICK Architecture has the power to create specific views and mitigate subject/object relationships. With these two capacities in mind, this project explores the potentials of display apparatuses to transform how we experience the world. From dioramas, vitrines and mirrors, to windows, skylights and peep holes, different types of display apparatuses are analyzed, then deployed in a domestic setting; firstly, to highlight a tableau of domestic programming (sleeping, eating and bathing); secondly, to put display on display.

The designed structure acts as a “cabinet of curiosities,” which enables people to move between being observing subjects and objects of observation. This experience is generated through an agglomeration of display apparatuses, drawing qualities from those found in natural history museums and department stores. Natural history museums are antiquated and as “endangered” as many of the specimens they put on display; department store windows are constantly updated and reflective of current consumer desires. In this project, display apparatuses, in addition to the things they hold, are put on display.

Houses usually carry with them certain expectations of how living, or domesticity, happens within – particularly concerning gender roles.

Describing the Main Hall of the American Museum of Natural History in her essay, “Teddy Bear Patriarchy,” Donna Haraway observes, “each nature, a hearth for home and family.”1 Haraway’s analysis reveals a connection between dioramas and displays of domesticity. The type of dwelling presented by this project aims to break free of established social constructions, with the programmed spaces taking on the characteristics of the display apparatuses under study.

MELTING POINT ANN ARBOR, MI TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING WINTER 2015 INSTRUCTOR: JULIA MCMORROUGH Design for a 154-unit, mixed-use, midrise, slab building with double-loaded circulation and individual balconies in a parklike setting. The given site was a large open field in Ann Arbor, MI, adjacent to a residential neighborhood and close to a train station. Drawing from precedents like the Unité d’Habitation, de Plussenburgh, and the Aqua Tower, the two main jumping off points for design were the circulation and individual balconies.

An exterior corridor on the scale of the site that acts as a park on the top surface and houses a variety of commercial and recreational uses underneath, served as a method for connecting the building to the site and ground plane.

The iceberg was a useful device in thinking of connecting the exterior corridor to the residential slabs.

The building was envisioned as an ice chunk, dropped, melted, and refrozen on the site. The ‘melting point’ acts as an important connection between the slabs and the designed exterior corridor, activating transit and recreation.

PERISCOPE HOUSE ANN ARBOR, MI UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING WINTER 2014 The Periscope House was designed for a Sustainable Systems class. It takes advantage of several important passive strategies to minimize its heating load in the winter and cooling load in the summer. First, the building footprint is designed to be very compact so as to minimize the surface area of exterior walls. The exterior walls, roof, and floor are insulated to Passivhaus standards. To further reduce the heating energy demand, the building is oriented with a trombe wall assembly to the South. Triple-glazing with a relatively high Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and low U-value is used to allow solar heat to reach the trombe wall while minimizing conductive losses through the glass curtain wall. The Southfacing cantilever is designed to allow sunlight to reach the trombe wall in the winter and to shade the wall in the summer.

Movable louvers also provide shade in the summer. Finally, the orientation of the building takes advantage of prevailing winds to enable cross-ventilation.

In addition to passive strategies, the house also employs active systems to maintain comfort levels. Since the house sits on a large lot, a high-efficiency geothermal heat pump system is used to fulfill the heating energy demand. A vertical system was chosen to ensure that the closed loops extend below the frost line. This system is also used to heat the domestic hot water. A heat recovery ventilator with a high recovery efficiency is installed to efficiently provide fresh air to the house.

LANDSCAPE LIDOS DETROIT, MI TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING FALL 2014 - NETWORKS STUDIO INSTRUCTOR: JEN MAIGRET Within the city limits of Detroit, dozens of public parks have been abandoned by the Parks and Recreation Department and public pools are all but extinct. Once littered with public playgrounds and recreation centers, the city’s urban fabric is now almost entirely devoid of these two species.

As the city’s current social and economic climates mean it is longer viable to restore the pool and park populations to their previous numbers and states of grandeur, these “landscape lidos” propose public urban recreation on a more concise scale.

Their splashy colors and patterning allow them to be recognizable as a coherent system/unified network of pools (loosely suggesting that they are official recreation sites, as in the days of WPA pools/official recreation centers).

They will provide venues that are fresh, playful riffs on their previous incarnations as institutionalized, art-deco designed public pools. Their forms, absurd in the landscape of Detroit, demand attention. Yet they remain local and grounded in the neighborhood (no moving parts and built into the site).

Since the lidos will be neighborhood-based, it will be up to city residents (rather than institutions) to activate and foster them. In utilizing abandoned parks as sites for the lidos, former spaces allocated for recreation are reactivated. These sites have been allowed to fall out of their meticulously manicured states and have an overgrown atmosphere. As such, the lido settings do not interrupt but interweave with the landscape.

They are slack, wavy topographies that are surrounded by ceremonial arches to punctuate them within the urban fabric.

They encourage meeting, interaction, lounging, play, and a dip in the wading pool.

MOODY OBJECTS TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING WINTER 2016 - DIGIFAB INSTRUCTOR: ADAM FURE In a process termed “digital taxidermy,” screenshots of a digital model of a cow (“original digital model”) were used as input to a photogrammetry software, and the resulting digital output (“original digital scan”) was manipulated using various modeling techniques in Maya and Rhino. In total, eight cows were digitally modeled and then physically crafted, each making use of different techniques. The fabrication methods included paper-folding, laser-cutting, ABS plastic and plaster 3D printing, CNC routing, laminating and concrete casting.

The result is an exploration in the distortion that occurs when digital objects are subjected to photogrammetry technology, as well as digital and physical processes of making and remaking.

RIETVELD-SCHRÖDER HOUSE STUDY TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING FALL 2013 INSTRUCTOR: GLENN WILCOX A semester-long exploration of the Rietveld-Schroder House prompted an interest in transformable architecture—that is, architecture with reconfigurable components. The precedent employs a system of movable walls to partition a communal living space into separated compartments. In undergoing this shift, the house reflects the implied sliding of the planar/linear De Stijl elements cladding its exterior with actual movement on the interior.

RIETVELD-SCHRÖDER HOUSE ANALYSIS TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING FALL 2013 INSTRUCTOR: GLENN WILCOX A diagrammatic analysis examines the Rietveld-Schröder House as an apparently simple cube that transforms into six blocks sliding on rails, revealing a complexity analogous to the transformational potential of the precedent. This analysis led to the discovery of additional types of transformation; in addition to sliding, the blocks rotate around the rails, and regroup into new configurations.

Design for a cultural event installed on the fifth level of an urban parking garage. Considering the temporal limitations of the site, the project looks to mediate the spatial relationship between the existing program and the new cultural scenario.

EXISTING STAIRWELL/ ENTRY

The strategy of relying on unpackable artifacts to define programmatic areas is utilized to condense 10,000 square feet of programmatic requirements into 3,000 square feet.

Thus, the utility of the site as a parking level when required is maintained. Program-relevant artifacts are unpacked and used to catalyze space and activity as the site transforms from a parking level to a cultural center.

OCCUPY A POOL ANN ARBOR, MI TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING WINTER 2014 INSTRUCTOR: ANYA SIROTA Design for a temporary cultural center in a recreational building swimming pool. The brief was to stage an artistic performance for a ticketed audience, while maintaining the possibility of the pool’s use. Through building a model using various casting techniques, the design employs subtle moves to generate an opportunistic transformation of the pool.

The volume that the water in the pool would occupy is extracted, lifted, flipped, and shifted to create a definitive figure hovering above the empty pool. The volume rests on a hollow, inhabitable core that also acts as a circulation route.

To further delineate the inversion of the pool volume from a negative space to a figure, the negative space around the volume is punctuated by a space-frame.

STUFFED STUFF ANN ARBOR, MI TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING WINTER 2014 INSTRUCTOR: ANYA SIROTA This model exercise makes use of found objects to design a setting for an event area in the apse space of the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). Mimicking the classical style of the apse, the pile of found objects (represented by miniatures) is molded into classical forms. The “stuffed stuff” forms classical archways, columns, and coliseum-style steps. In being deliberately molded, the individual objects act collectively as an aggregate, continuing in--yet challenging-the tradition of “junk spectacle.”
