Design brief specification

Your task is to design a new library that will attract younger generations into the building.

To make the new idea you will include an arts studio for recording music or arts and crafts. This will take vulnerable people off the streets and make it easier to peruse creative interests This space will be green (environmentally conscious) This should have a modern design based from organic and natural forms The building will be based in an urban area.

location Replacing the havering library would be a great place. There is a major bus stop near by, it is local to a train station and a few car parks due to the market and indoor shopping mall.

In these photos you can see where I generalised the form into its basic and key features.

The interior of the library area has a typical layout to traditional libraries. The shelves and desks are all placed in parallel rows. This is a focused environment for hard work only. The building has been carefully planned out with the first and second floor are open with many reading areas and the third floor contains private rooms whilst the fourth contains a roof top terrace and eating areas where you can view the surroundings.

Its curved roof references the idea of a book page turned over, which references the buildings purpose.

The Calgary library is an extension of the original building which is now 2/3 times larger becoming one of the largest libraries in north America. The new building now encompasses a crescent moon shapes rail station which was on the site originally.

The exterior design is made to blend in with the mountainous terrain to not become an eyesore.

The window pains remind me of a vast pine forest or a silhouette of a mountain range.

The Interior design is very innovative. They have different arrangements that create new uses and functions. The bookshelves are mostly round some are almost complete circles with an inner section of shelves this creates new ways to organize and use the spaces. The round forms create more open and breathable spaces that are unique to conventional libraries.

Most of the interior structure is made from timber which creates a warm welcoming atmosphere to the visitors. The entrance is encompassed by an amphitheater of slopes and steps where people can sit.

The building is designed to be accommodating for all with multiple rooms, a bright and colourful children's section. The higher you go into the building, the quieter and more focused it gets.

The form reminds me of an ancient civilization.

I enjoy the symmetrical style, perhaps I can incorporate this in my library design.

The green features also remind me of hanging moss or vines from a tree.

Every aspect of this building has been designed to draw the eye. There is not one plain surface, the windows are set sunken in or protruding outwards which would have been very difficult at the time it was built. The building has many balconies so there must be a good view to show off there are also a lot of windows as well as balconies to show the view. The building is detailed with oxidized copper which creates a contrast to the plain white concrete walls.​ The building is surrounded by plant life and due to the hot climate has an inside-outside living appeal with an outside swimming poll within a small courtyard still surrounded by the four walls.

The library incorporates a range of cultural and social facilities, to put libraries into the heart of the community.

The ground space was limited so they designed the building to have a small foot and spread out from the floor.

This construction is a library and a theatre this shows it is soundproof to keep the focused atmosphere.

The curved staircase creates a centerpiece . All of the shelves and the layout are built around the centre.

The shapes of the shelves breaks up the spaces The lighting is very bright and create a more focused atmosphere.

The round shapes create a more open and ventilated area.

The bookshelves are arranged in wavy lines which could reflect the river and old port that revived the area when it was built.

Natural history museum primary research

Here I am looking for inspiration in natural formations. Most of the time natural formations look messy and random, But here the crystals have a near regular geometric pattern. The contrast between their geometric shapes and random arrangement create an interesting form to learn from.

Museum of zoology Cambridge

I simplified the shape of the Fibonacci spiral in the shell in this model

At the museum of zoology in Cambridge there was an array of sea life exhibits showing many different shells. Sea life can seem very alien with many strange shapes and structures such as corral, sponges or shells. In my opinion the shells have the most intriguing shape so ill be taking inspiration from then as a potential design .

Combining the shapes in some way could make an interesting form and would create an appropriate solution for separating the studio from the library.

Other natural forms Here I had attempted to make a rubbing if tree bark to capture their unusual patterns. I am going to develop these ideas to find something new.

Then I traced the rubbing creating contours and finding any closed shapes that I thought looked interesting. Now I am going to refine this tracing into useable shapes.

Trees and plants I have taken the geometric patterns of the bark and sketched them out onto white card. Now with this new pattern I will cut shapes out of the card in order to create a form based on the interesting structure.

The grooves in this tree bark are evenly spread out and somewhat parallel. This creates an interesting pattern

Developing my ideas Here I am making my attempts to create a working form that will show my design as I have drawn them. On my first attempts I had separate pieces of paper to create a general idea od the two leading shapes I the model but o wanted to create a flowing continuous form.

Next (on this page) I am focusing on the connection between the two shapes to create a flowing sleek shape. I cut paper in to a strip and cut tabs over one half this almost successfully creates the form.

Still focusing on the connecting aspect, I thought creating a plastic prism and forming the shape would fit the vision I had presented in my sketches. However after the heat was applied, I bent it to twist into the spiral and the prism collapsed into itself.

This was a failure.

My next attempt was to create the front form and attach wire to the sides. Threading wire straws through the wire will allow me to twist the form in any way I wanted with practically no restrictions.

The model making is time consuming but not impossible to do.

Th outcome of this model creates the best form in my opinion.

I used wooden blocks to show different sections and spaces that could be kept within the form.

Developing the library Here I am rebuilding the model with different materials to see which ones I think look better.

This style is interesting and reminds me of the industrial style cladding of the Canada water library

Using metal mesh created an interesting however I preferred the last style of using tubes to create the library. Maybe using cuboids instead of tubes will look better

Here I have compared my design size to the original library that I am replacing. From this you can see that the to-scale drawing fits into the space with a few minor sections.

Creating a library from my models

From the models, here I am creating sketches to make the design look more like a real library.

Final library edits The layout has not changed majorly however I moved the bathroom to the right corner and put the computers in the left corner because I wanted a large window to wrap around the back corner.

I have also removed the separation lines between the desks. This will encourage more interaction with other people.

Plain colour

Originally the exterior would have been a plain natural colour to the material however, this might come across as being boring and just blend in with the rest of the buildings in the area. Painting the walls in bright colours can draw attention to the site.

Another idea is to actually leave it blank purposefully for graffiti art to be put over the walls.

Having the building covered in a dark material can instead create a different effect but will hide the shape of the building.

Having a mixture of both light and dark colours will create a nice contrast that will complement the modern style and stand out from the rest of the surrounding buildings.

Here I am creating test images to demonstrate how the library could look with the proposed style that I mentioned. In these drawing I have removed the studio because it is only to the colour.

I have made the design have a large open front window to allow lots of light through.

Also I have planned to add skylights in the roof like in the ‘Canada water’ library.

I think that this final digital drawing is what I will base my final design from.

Making the model Here I have designed a cad model of the library front at a 1:100 scale.

For the floor I used brown paper to create the effect of a laminate wood. For the real library, the floor would be made from pine because it has a natural warm colour.

due to a lack of material the frame was made from clear acrylic instead of black acrylic. I may replace all the colour black with an opaque colour.

This can remove thee need to create additional skylights.

I used frosted plastic to act as the windows. They will allow light through whilst obscuring the outside minimizing any disturbances. I also created the wrap around window.

At this point all of the walls are glued together to. The next stage is to add the curved outer sections and the recording studio.

Die to problems with making the colour scheme may be altered slightly.
