JCI JCI is a membership-based nonprofit organization of young active citizens ages 18 to 40 in more than 100 countries who are dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. Each JCI member shares the belief that in order to create lasting positive change, we must improve ourselves and the world around us. JCI members take ownership of their communities by identifying problems and creating targeted solutions to crate impact.

Our Philosophy As global citizens, we all have rights and responsibilities, as well as shared goals. Through active citizenship, we embrace social responsibility and work towards goals that benefit communities worldwide. JCI members embrace new ideas, collaboration and diversity. Guided by the vision and initiative to transform their lives and the world, JCI members have the courage to address the great challenges of our time.

A Framework of Results The JCI Active Citizen Framework provides a methodology for running sustainable, needs-based projects that create measurable results in communities. The process starts with assessing community needs in health and wellness, education and economic empowerment, and sustainability. By engaging partners and evaluating results, JCI members ensure their projects deliver effective positive change.

JCI Around the World With around 5,000 JCI Local Organizations in more than 100 JCI National Organizations, JCI forms a vibrant global community of nearly 200,000 active citizens. All members belong to a JCI Local Organization where they focus on finding solutions to problems in their local community. Local Organizations are affiliated to National Organizations. This structure forms a global grassroots movement, empowering members to run international projects, exchange ideas and work together to develop new ways to create positive change in their communities.

JCI Mission To provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.

JCI Vision To be the leading global network of young active citizens.

JCI Values That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth's great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

INTERVIEW JCI Mines Bulletin JCI Mines Past President

1. When did you first join JCI? I joined the JCI Mines in the year 2008, during the presidential term of JC Jasper Tan. He first offered me the program of “TiYan32” (Program Experience 32 Hours), which was initiated by JCI Member Max Yuen, the charter president of JCI Achiever. That was the first program I joined in JCI and getting to know about JCI. I submitted the registration form to JCI Mines after the program completed in its first part, which successfully raised RM 10,000 fund for the victims of Si-Chuan Earthquake of China, within one week.

2. What makes JCI to be in your good favors? For my personal understanding at the beginning, JCI is for entrepreneurs and leaderships. I’m just among the small portion of them who are considered a leader in the area of social activity. My perception about JCI is an active young entrepreneur’s association. Thus, I must be professional and responsible in this organization. When the time I agreed to take up the position as Vice President in the chapter JCI Mines, I must responsible for my position and the role I played. If this is an organization for the active member, I must be ‘more active’ as I served as the committee in this “active organization”.

3. JCI mission is to provide development opportunities to empower young people to create positive changes. In your opinion, how do you think JCI Malaysia and JCI Mines can achieve this Mission Statement? I strongly agreed with the JCI mission and go a tandem with the mission during my JCI life and emphasis it to members by ‘lead by example’. There are many people in this country looking for ‘benefit’ from an organization and also there are many people just join any of the organizations for just fun.

But in JCI, this is a platform empowered to the members to growth themselves through active participation. They are the ‘member’ and they are also the ‘leader’. Thus, members should not ‘request’ from the organization instead of keep asking themselves “What can I contribute myself to the organization?” Align with the mission of JCI is that the concept of “The power of One”, as individual is the power to crate positive change, this is true for JCI. If not YOU, so WHO else? We, everybody, are part of the social, of the nation and of this global network of organization. I show the energy of myself and the synergy of our teamwork, continue to lead and to serve.

4. As a President of a JCI Local Chapter, what was the most challenging task you had experienced during your presidential year? As I mentioned before, I’m the fourth president in JCI Mines and this chapter is considered ‘young’ at that time, as most of the JCI system and procedure are not followed completely. I must get this chapter exposed to the JCI Malaysia, to the community and also on the other hand, brings-in the JCI culture into the chapter. That also sound that I was the one who must take the role to ‘change’, as refresh the old image of the chapter to a new JCI-oriented organization. More training was executed and parliamentary procedure was started implemented.

5. What inspires you to be a JCI Local Chapter President? This is quite a good question. It may so-called ‘coincident’ (by fate?) or it is the result of planned mission, by previous presidents, before me. During the past, JCI Mines has many of inactive and senior members. In order to keep the momentum, the chapter looked for someone who can lead the organization. I am one of the candidates that labeled as the successor. There are difference portfolios with the presidential candidates, and I have my own also. Lastly, I definitely modified my portfolio in line with the JCI mission and vision. I have no personal agenda and own ideas, but to listen from the majority of members and committed myself to lead the chapter to an active and professional organization. I faced the challenges of very few members and inactive members that time. If my mission failed, the whole chapter will be closed soon. So I must take the most advance steps to create more opportunities for the young members and recruitment was my weapon, in order to survive.

6. What do you think you have personally gained after your presidential year of JCI Mines? The first thing I gained was the leadership skill and entrepreneurship. The most attribute to move a chapter is the leadership skill that can recruit member, assigned tasks, lead to general objectives, and finally coordinate all the members. Entrepreneurship is that when I started the chapter from ‘zero’ to somewhere, I must fully optimize the only asset I have that time, it was the ‘members’, to the maximum outcome. Secondly was the financial strength, from the uncertainly of financial status to positive. I can still remember that difficult time, I never credited the account for all kind of activities, on the other hand, I used come of the activities to raised some money.

7. Which leader do you admire? How do you describe his(her) values? I have no individual admired leader, but I prefer the

autocratic leadership, this kind of leadership is needed when the situation is in chaos and/or high uncertain level. Most of the time when this country facing the biggest challenges in globalization and high economic impact, the only way we do is overcome problems with single vision. However, autocratic doesn’t means negative to me, because this kind of leader also made decision based on the various opinion and fair to make his(her) own final decision.

8. What do you think about JCI Mines in the first half of the year 2012? JCI Mines in the first half on the year of 2012 is kicked-up the ball and keep the ball rolling, but the momentum still low, there is a need to boost up the level by more trainings and new members involvement.

9. Do you have a favorite quote? None. But I strongly believe that to get a ‘good’ result, you need to think ‘better’ and do it the ‘best’ as you can.

10. What have you achieved during your presidential year in JCI Mines? I served as the fourth president of JCI Mines in the year 2010, regarded as the leader for second generation of new blood in JCI Mines. I have rebranded the “Mines” as “Management”, “Intelligent”, “Networking”, “Eagerness”, and “Standard”. During that time, four areas of opportunities in JCI were fairly distributed and activities were conducted in each of the area such as: the flagship project - Famine-30 Serdang, Old folk house visitation, (Community Service); coorganized JCI Presenter with JCI KL, working with people workshop by JCI Senator Mukesh from India, effective communication workshop, business negotiation power workshop (Individual Development); and take part in all JCIM activities, like the Annual Peninsular Convention, Annual National Convention, Ten Outstanding Young Malaysia

INTERVIEW JCI Mines Past President

presentation dinner, JCIM Green project, Hari Belia Negara, to show the ‘commitment’ (presidential slogan) to meet the vision and vision of JCI as a whole, along with the JCI Malaysia. Various other internal members’ fellowship activities were organized to strengthen the internal members bonding, such as: Durian fellowship, Visit KL Bird Park with children, Wedding dinner of JCI member Chin Tian Yuan and our second chapter president JCI member Danny. Other than that, good business and networking opportunities also provided for the members, for example visited JCI Masterskill for times, especially lead members for the JCI world president’s new member induction during his visitation to JCI Masterskill and announced the biggest chapter in the world, JCI Mines also played good relationship with JCI Entrepreneur, as to join their activities most the time. In the International Networking platform, JCI Mines showed good international networking with India and Taiwan. For the personal achievement, personally was appointed as zone secretary of JCIM's Zone 3 (middle of peninsular area) in the following year in 2011. General to speak, my mission for the year was to be more active in JCI Malaysia, both personal and chapter, and also managed to be a better chapter management organization, successful in promoting and marketing JCI Mines, and maintained good and positive chapter's financial status. I was also successfully to recruit more new members to replace the elder members in this chapter whose were naturally leaved this organization.

11. Lastly, how would you encourage people to Join JCI? JCI is a global network of active young citizens to crate positive change, besides the vision and mission the JCI has, JCI also is considered as a good global system; last time the local chapter is named ‘Local Chapter Management’, it is obviously that each of the small organization (or branch) of JCI is a ‘management unit’. JCI has successful growth in this good managerial system globally and this system changed time by time, as continuous to serve the global need. The understanding of the JCI system is a way to understand the successful global management system. No matter people are employers or employees, or any other type of profession, the ‘system’ is a need, and the value of the JCI finally is the intangible value of the ‘system’ itself, which can be implemented in everywhere in your life.

UN Millennium Bulleti Development Goals Background: The JCI Commitment to the MDGs In September 2000 at the UN Millennium Summit, world leaders agreed to set of time-bound and measurable goals and targets for combating many of the social and economic issues facing the nations of the world. The eight UN Millennium Development Goals (UN MDGs) are placed at the heart of the Millennium Campaign’s global agenda. At the 2003 JCI Leadership Summit at the United Nations in New York, JCI committed to contributing to the efforts of the UN and resolved to use the goals as a framework for creating positive change and to encourage the development of programs and projects designed to address issues outlined in the goals. Working in collaboration with the United Nations, JCI has held several Leadership Summits at the UN in New York. These Summits have helped JCI members lean about the UN and its projects, including those related to the UN MDGs.

8 Millennium Development Goals

These eight objectives provide a comprehensive list of areas of vital concern for nations around the world. By developing projects to address these goals, JCI members can create targeted programs that deliver measurable results and create a profound impact. Children are the future, but not all have the opportunity to grow equally.JCI members have committed to advancing UN Millennium Development Goals 2 and 4: Universal Education and Child Health. Whether it’s raising awareness, raising funds or raising the walls of a new schoolhouse, the young active citizens of JCI are making the future brighter for many kids. A lack of education and proper health care are tremendous barriers to overcome for children in many nations. Even youth in developed countries can suffer from poor access to health care or inadequate education. Children need our help to ensure they are equipped to become the future leaders the world needs.

MDG 2: Achieve universal primary education

MDG 4: Reduce child mortality

Globally, 73 million children are not enrolled in primary school.

Despite a recent rise, 12% of children in developing countries remain out of school. In sub-Saharan Africa, that number rises to 29%.

 

Nearly 90 countries have yet to reach universal primary education, and 58 of those are not expected to achieve this goal by 2015.

 

Aid directed to basic education for low-income countries is currently USD $5 billion, less than half of the estimated USD $11 billion needed to reach universal primary education by 2015.

 

Nearly 10 million children under five die every year from preventable causes like pneumonia, measles and malaria. In 62 countries, the mortality rate for children under five is not declining rapidly enough to meet the 2015 target of reducing mortality by two thirds. Malnutrition is estimated to contribute to more than one third of all deaths in children under five. As of 2006, 26% of all children under five years old were considered undernourished.
