The Jones International House Program
The Jones International House Program provides a window into the world for students at Jacksonville State University and the surrounding community.
The program began in 1946 with four students from France and originally focused on language. While the emphasis is still placed on languages, greater importance is now placed on promoting global understanding and peace between all nations and cultures.
There are 40 members of the program— 20 American students and 20 international. Each international student is from a different country and is roomed with an American student.
The International House Program has impacted over 2,000 alumni living in 5 continents and there are over 700 active alumni.

Dr. James Harding Jones was born on a small farm near the village of Sunny Side in LeFlore County, Mississippi, at the end of the 19th century. He spent two years in France with the Mississippi Rainbow Division during World War I. After the war, he attended Ole Miss where he met and married Myra Hume. During the decades of the Great Depression and World War II, he completed a doctorate in the French language, became a foreign language professor in Alabama and raised three sons.
At the end of World War II (1946), Dr. Jones conceived the idea of starting an international student program at Jax State. By bringing together students from different cultures around the world, they could learn to know and respect one another, thus making a small step toward the goal of world peace. Dr. and Mrs. Jones devoted themselves fully to this endeavor until his retirement in 1964.
Quick History:
1946: IH program started with 4 foreign students in the program.
1949: International House-Maison Internationale constructed by gifts from Alabama Citizens.
1953: International Endowment Foundation board was formed.
1964: Col. Clarence W. Daugette Jr., President of the Board of Trustees of the International House Foundation, contributed to the construction of the present building that accommodates 40 students.
