Dear Florida and Georgia Fans: What an exciting weekend for college football at Everbank Field! Jacksonville has played host to this historic matchup for more than 80 years, and it only gets better each time. Florida-Georgia is more than a game; it’s a tradition and an important part of Jacksonville’s identity. Not only does this game allow us to showcase our great city to our residents and 100,000 out-of-town visitors, it also provides a more than $30 million boost to our local economy. Throughout the weekend, look for our six City-sponsored Sideline Safety Zones in the Sports Complex and throughout downtown Jacksonville. The Sideline Safety Zones provide free assistance such as first aid, transportation, directions, telephone service, food, water, and more. FLORIDA HEAD COACH

FLORIDA WELCOME

JIM McELWAIN

“The Florida-Georgia Football rivalry is more than just a football game—it has become a tradition like no other. There is nothing like coming across the Hart Bridge and seeing all of the Orange and Blue and Red and Black. The excitement and passion from fans on both sides can’t be beat and this game is one Gator fans have circled far in advance. We can’t wait for another great matchup in 2017!”

GEORGIA HEAD COACH

KIRBY SMART

GEORGIA WELCOME “Having been a player, assistant coach, and head coach in this game, it is one of the most memorable experiences for anyone connected with college football. It may be the most unique regular season game in the country with a sold out stadium of fans split in half. It’s truly an extraordinary atmosphere and unforgettable experience for coaches, players, and fans.”

The 22nd Annual Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Presented by Ruth’s Chris Steak House

Friday, October 27 at 11:30 a.m. Located inside the US Assure West Club at EverBank Field The Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame was created as a way to acknowledge the many great records, performances, career highlights, and outstanding memories that have been made the Florida-Georgia game one of college football’s greatest traditions. This year’s inductees are legendary Gators Tim Tebow and Lito Sheppard with Bulldog greats Knowshon Moreno and Randall Godfrey. In addition, Greg McGarity, University of Georgia’s Athletic Director, will be inducted into the Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame. The emcee is Brent Martineau, sports director for Action Sports Jax.

Former Florida Athletic Director and Hall of Famer, Jeremy Foley, with 2016 Hall Of Fame Inductees: CBS’s Verne Lundquist, Jeff Chandler (UF), Ben Troupe (UF), Marcus Stroud (UGA) and Scott Woerner (UGA) with University of Georgia and 2017 inductee, Greg McGarity.

HALL OF FAME DISPLAY The Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame will be on display on Saturday, October 28 at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. For more information, visit FLGAjax.com or call the Jacksonville Sports and Entertainment Office at (904) 630-3600.

2017 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

These five outstanding individuals will join current Hall of Fame members for their roles in making the Florida-Georgia Game the storied rivalry that it is today.

LITO SHEPPARD Jacksonville native, Lito Sheppard, exceeded expectations when he joined the Florida Gators in 1999. Playing for legendary coach Steve Spurrier, Sheppard continued his All-American ways at Florida. Sheppard had plenty of big games at Florida, but he always seemed to save his best games for the one in Jacksonville. He recorded two interceptions in his career against Georgia, including a key 61-yard interception return late in the second quarter in the 2000 game. He never lost a game to the Dawgs, going 3-0. During his 10 year NFL career, he would go on to play for the Eagles, Jets, Vikings, and Raiders.

TIM TEBOW Jacksonville’s own Tim Tebow is widely regarded as one of the greatest college football players of all time; he was the first sophomore ever to win the Heisman Trophy, as well as the Davey O’Brien Trophy and Maxwell Award. Tebow also won two National Championships and two SEC Championships for the Gators in 2006 and 2008. He was a two time First-team All-American selection and a three time First-team All-SEC choice. His Florida senior class was the winningest class in SEC history with a record of 48-7. The Denver Broncos selected him in the 1st round of the 2010 NFL Draft. RANDALL GODFREY One of the greatest linebackers in Georgia history, Randall Godfrey was another stellar defender to play between the hedges. Godfrey burst onto the scene at Georgia, leading the team in tackles with 114. He continued his stellar play at Georgia over the next three seasons, racking up 365 total tackles and multiple All-SEC honors during his career. Godfrey is a part of a very unique group in the rivalry that played in the only two games since 1933 that were not held in Jacksonville. During his 12 year NFL career, Godfrey would go on to play for the Cowboys, Titans, Seahawks, Chargers, and Redskins.

KNOWSHON MORENO Knowshon Moreno added an exciting new chapter to the Georgia history books. After redshirting during the 2006 season, Moreno split carries with fellow running back Thomas Brown to start the 2007 season; just in time for the Georgia-Florida game. Moreno was the star of the game. His leaping touchdown in the first quarter caused one of the most iconic moments in the rivalry’s history. Moreno continued his stellar play to finish the 2007 season, finishing the year with 1,334 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. Moreno was drafted 12th overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos and would go on to play 6 seasons in the NFL for the Broncos and the Miami Dolphins.

GREG MCGARITY University of Georgia graduate Greg McGarity was named Director of Athletics at UGA on August 13, 2010, after serving 18 years in the athletic department at the University of Florida. Since that time, McGarity has emphasized exploring new ideas and initiatives designed to move the organization forward in all areas of competition, academics, service, and exceptional experiences for studentathletes and supporters. Since he became Director of Athletics, 18 Georgia teams have been ranked in the nation’s top 20 and 10 in the top ten and Georgia’s standing in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which annually measures athletic teams success in NCAA championships, has improved from 20th in 2011 to 10th in 2013 and is consistently in the top 20. A JACKSONVILLE TRADITION SINCE 1933

BY THE NUMBERS 1904

For the University of Georgia’s athletic department, the 1904 game held in Macon, Georgia, kicked the series off with a 52 - 0 win. Florida’s University Athletic Association does not count the loss in their tally as the team that they fielded was from an institution then known as the Florida Agricultural College, based in Lake City. This was one year before the Florida Legislature established what we know as the University of Florida and it was then one year later in 1906 that the Gators officially established their football team.

Florida 1928 National High-Scoring Champions 336-44

1928

Florida experienced its first victory in the rivalry beating Georgia 26-6.

1933

Starting in 1926, the game has been an annual event and since 1933, has called Jacksonville home, the only exceptions being 1994 and 1995.

1915

The first recognized game by both institutions took place at Barrs Field in Jacksonville, Florida on November 6, 1915. Georgia won 37-0.

49 -

43-2T

University of Georgia Football Team, 1892.

The streaks of dominance by both sides seem to run in decades, but the current record favors Georgia at 49-43-2 (50-43-2 if you’re part of the camp that counts 1904).

Georgia won the first six meetings in dominating fashion.

Last year, #14 Florida beat Georgia for the third consecutive year.

ONE OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S GREATEST RIVALRIES

In the land of palm trees and sunny beaches, the home of Disney World and gator-infested swamps, it’s the Florida-Georgia game. Don’t even think about changing those state names around. When the Gators and Bulldogs meet each year on the banks of the St. Johns River, one of college football’s greatest rivalries sweeps into downtown Jacksonville. If you show up in orange and blue, your chances of sitting on the winner’s side of the stadium increases. The Bulldogs can thank Steve Spurrier for that. It was Spurrier, who from Day 1 on the job, decried Georgia’s 22-victory edge in the historic series. After all, Spurrier noted, the game was played in Jacksonville, Florida in a stadium then called the Gator Bowl. It was time the Florida Gators did their part. Over the past quarter-century, UF has owned it, winning 21 of the last 27 meetings. Spurrier’s dominant 11-1

record against Georgia from 19902001 changed the rivalry’s direction. One that was needed by the UF faithful after a 15-45 series edge in the Bulldogs favor from 1971-89. In the years since who can forget Errict Rhett in the rain, ‘half a hundred’ in Athens or Urban and Tebow? It’s Mac’s turn now. The Gators have won both games against Georgia under third-year head coach Jim McElwain. Florida-Georgia is like no other game in America. The party starts early and ends late. When the day is done, it’s easy to tell which team won if you never bothered going inside the stadium. Just check out which team’s fans are still grilling in the parking lot. Over the years, there have been occasional cries to move the game to the respective campuses (usually by the fan base on the losing end of the game), but the split-stadium setting on the river makes it one of the unique and truly treasured traditions in all of college game.—from the Swamp

IT IS A TRADITION LIKE NO OTHER

It’s a date that is circled on every Georgia fan’s calendar a year in advance. Jacksonville has been the second home of the Bulldogs since the Georgia-Florida clash began on an annual basis hosted by the River City in 1933. It is a tradition like no other with a stadium divided in half by fans from both sides. The atmosphere is electric and the tradition unsurpassed. The pilgrimage of Georgia fans to the beaches of St. Simons, Jekyll Island, Amelia, Jacksonville, St. Augustine and

many other seaside communities has become an annual tradition that has continued over decades. For the players and coaches, it’s a business trip. But for each of them, there is no sight that compares to the view coming over the Hart Bridge and looking down on the hundreds of campers, tents, and tailgates and thousands of fans that surround the stadium on game day. It’s an annual celebration on the banks of the St. Johns River for fans of the Red and Black one and all.—from the Doghouse
