In September 2022, members of NYC Audubon identified the 51st bird species on our 6.75-acre green roof, a remarkable achievement for our rooftop ecosystem.

Since the installation of bird-safe glass during the 2009-2014 renovation, bird collisions decreased more than 90 percent, and the convention center has transformed into a haven for area wildlife, including five bat species and thousands of arthropods As a result, the Javits Center has inspired bird-friendly legislation – in New York and across the country –and served as a model for the impact of such retrofits As part of the recent expansion, bird-safe glass was installed across the entire façade, including the rooftop greenhouse For our environmental efforts,

NYC Audubon honored the Javits Center during its Fall Roost in September, presenting CEO Alan Steel and the Executive Team with a prestigious award

Four new bee hives were added to the expansion rooftop as well, bringing the total to nine bee hives on our massive rooftop Each hive houses 80,000 to 100,000 bees, and with beekeeper Astor Apiaries, we harvest our own honey, which is incorporated into our culinary menu and bottled for distribution to guests
