El Albaicín musulmán, el Realejo judío y el Centro Histórico supone la expansión cristiana de la ciudad, aunque en cada uno de ellos encontramos también presencia de las otras culturas. Alhambra, Albaicín y Realejo son tres bellos escaparates, pero no son lo único, Sacromonte, Centro Histórico, entorno de la plaza del Triunfo y plaza de Toros, Cartuja o la zona de Ronda y Genil muestran la Granada más antigua y la más contemporánea, sus calles y plazas se llenan de vida, de color y de sabor. Cada uno de estos lugares es diferente, es único y todos conjuntamente forman esa Granada que enamora al mundo.

A land of contrasts in so many different ways, it was important to the Christians, Jews and Muslims, the footprint of the three cultures which have endured over time and formed three of the city’s most important enclaves: the Muslim Albaicín, the Jewish Realejo and the historic city centre, which marked the Christian expansion of the city. However, in each of these we still find traces of the presence of the other cultures. Alhambra, Albaicín and Realejo are three lovely showcases for Granada, but they are not the only ones. Sacromonte, in the oldest part of the city, the area around the Plaza del Triunfo and the bullring, Cartuja and the areas of Ronda and Genil reflect both the most historic and the most contemporary Granada, with its streets full of life, colour and flavours. Each one of these places is different, each is unique, and together they form the Granada with which the whole world falls in love.

La Alhambra Fiel a su historia, la Alhambra sigue siendo la meta de muchos viajeros, quizá el mejor tesoro que guarda la ciudad de Granada. Disfrutar de su belleza recorriendo las estancias palatinas, profundizando en los aromas surgidos de sus patios y jardines, deleitarse en los lugares de luz y color que ofrecen sus ornamentados salones y recrear la mirada con sus impresionantes vistas del Albaicín y la Vega, constituyen todo un privilegio para los sentidos. Sobre la colina de la Sabika, los musulmanes construyeron a través de los siglos el conjunto monumental estructurado en torno a la Alcazaba, palacios Nazaríes, jardines, torres, paseos y el Generalife. La llegada del cristianismo supuso la construcción del palacio de Carlos V, el antiguo convento de San Francisco, hoy Parador Nacional, la iglesia de Santa María y las diferentes construcciones que se encuentran en su entorno donde destacan el pilar de Carlos V, la puerta de las Granadas, el propio bosque de la Alhambra tal y como hoy lo conocemos, o el Carmen de los Mártires entre otros. La Alhambra y su entorno ha vivido, vive y seguirá viviendo, haciendo posible la máxima del patrimonio como concepto evolutivo y no anclado en el tiempo. Muchas son las opciones que se ofrecen para conocer el monumento y su entorno, tanto de forma personal como a través de visitas guiadas, es indispensable conocer la historia, las tradiciones, la belleza del lugar para entender lo que hoy es Granada.

Faithful to its history, the Alhambra continues to be on the wish list of many travellers. It is possibly the city of Granada’s greatest treasure. Enjoying the beauty of its palatial rooms, breathing the fragrance of its patios and gardens, delighting in the light and colour of its decorative halls and marvelling at the impressive views of Albaícin and La Vega, are a privilege for all the senses. On La Sabika hill, over the centuries, the Muslims constructed a combination of buildings including the Alcazaba fortress, Nasrid palaces, gardens, towers, paths and the Generalife. The arrival of Christianity led to the construction of the Palace of Carlos V, the former convent of San Francisco, which is now a National Parador hotel, the Santa María church and important monuments in the area including the Carlos V fountain, the gate of Las Granadas, the Alhambra woods, as we call them today, and the Carmen de los Mártires, among others. The Alhambra and its surrounding area have lived, live today and will continue living, showing that heritage is an evolutionary concept and not something anchored in time. There are many different ways of exploring the monument and its surroundings, either individually or as part of a guided tour. It is essential to know about the history, traditions, and beauty of this place in order to understand the Granada of today.

Albaicín Un entramado urbanístico de calles estrechas, cuestas, plazas, miradores y cármenes (casas y palacetes con jardines) configura el corazón de la antigua Granada musulmana, declarado en 1994 por la UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad, posee verdaderas joyas de arte hispanomusulman, morisco y cristiano. Palacetes como el de Dar al-Horra, murallas y puertas de acceso a la antigua ciudad, aljibes, arquitectura doméstica en forma de casas moriscas como la de Horno del Oro y la de Zafra, e Iglesias y conventos que sustituyeron o reutilizaron a mezquitas y palacios musulmanes, se han convertido en seña de identidad de la ciudad.

A network of narrow streets, hills, squares, viewing points and ‘cármenes’ (houses and mansions with gardens) configure the heart of the old Muslim Granada, which was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. It has real jewels of Hispano-Muslim, Moorish and Christian art. Mansions such as that of Dar al-Horra, walls and gateways which were used to access the ancient city, water deposits, domestic architecture in the form of Moorish houses, such as the Horno del Oro and La Casa de Zafra, and churches and monasteries which substituted or re-used mosques and Moorish palaces, have become the city’s sign of identity.

El bajo Albaicín corresponde por un lado a la calle Elvira, la cual posee múltiples y variados establecimientos hosteleros que invitan a degustar la gastronomía de la tierra con profundas raíces musulmanas, relajarse junto a un exquisito te en cualquiera de sus numerosas teterías o acercarse a las tiendas y pequeños zocos como el de la calle Calderería. Por otro lado la Carrera del Darro, considerada una de las calles más bellas del mundo, presenta un permanente ir y venir de turistas y residentes, siempre admirando el paisaje único del rio Darro, sus puentes y sus magníficos monumentos donde destacan las iglesias mudéjares de San Pedro y San Pablo, o Santa Ana, edificios civiles como la Casa de Castril, sede del Museo Arqueológico, el Centro de Documentación Musical de Andalucía, la Casa de los Pisa y la Real Chancillería, sin olvidar el Bañuelo del siglo XI, uno de los mejor conservados de España.

On one side of the lower Albaicín is Calle Elviria, with numerous and varied restaurants which invite you to try the local gastronomy, with its deep Moorish roots, relax with a delicious tea in one of the numerous tea rooms or explore the shops and small markets such as those in Calle Calderería. On the other side the Carrera del Darro, considered one of the prettiest streets in the world, has a constant coming-andgoing of tourists and residents, admiring the unique landscapes of the Darro river, its bridges and magnificent monuments such as the Mudejar churches of San Pedro and San Pablo, or Santa Ana, civil buildings like the Casa de Castril, which houses the Archaeological Museum, the Musical Documentation Centre of Andalucía, the Casa de los Pisa and the Royal Chancellery, not forgetting the 11th century El Bañuelo, one of the best-preserved Moorish baths in Spain.

Sacromonte Subiendo o bajando por la cuesta del Chapiz se accede a otro de los rincones inolvidables de Granada, el camino que arranca junto a las casas moriscas del Chapiz nos introduce en las conocidas zambras flamencas, en cuevas habitadas desde hace centurias por el pueblo gitano y que han sabido mantener con el paso del tiempo la esencia de su cultura, sus tradiciones y su arte. Al final del camino del Sacromonte, se halla el monte Valparaiso, al final del camino de las siete cuestas, donde se erige la AbadĂa del mismo nombre, junto a las Santas Cuevas.

When you go up or down El Chapiz hill, you come to another unforgettable part of Granada. The road which starts beside the Moorish houses of El Chapiz introduces us to some of the famous flamenco shows, performed in caves which have been the homes of the gypsy population for centuries and which have maintained the essence of their culture, traditions and art with the passage of time. At the end of the Camino del Sacromonte is the Monte ValparaĂso, the end of the road of seven hills, where the Abbey of the same name stands beside the Santas Cuevas.

Realejo Al otro lado de la colina de la Alhambra, se ubica el barrio judío de Granada, la Garnata al-Yahud —Granada de los judíos—, por las calles que descienden por el cerro del Mauror desde las torres Bermejas y el Hotel Alhambra Palace, encontramos ejemplos de arquitectura que evoca aquella cultura y que con los años los cristianos fueron adaptando a sus usos. Destacan la Iglesia Imperial de San Matías, iglesia de San Cecilio o el conjunto eclesiástico de Santo Domingo donde el Camarín de la Virgen del Rosario no deja indiferente a nadie. Conventos como el de las Comendadoras de Santiago y palacios de nobles cristianos como el de la Casa de los Tiros se unen a espacios urbanos como el Campo del Príncipe para dar testimonio de lo acontecido en estos lugares en los últimos 500 años. La Granada musulmana también tiene presencia con el palacio almohade del Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo.

On the other side of the Alhambra hill is the Jewish quarter of Granada, the ‘Garnata al-Yahud’ —Granada of the Jews—, and along the streets which descend the Mauror hill from the Bermejas towers and the Alhambra Palace hotel we find examples of architecture which reflect that culture, and which over the years the Christians adapted to their own use. Among the most outstanding are the Imperial Church of San Matías, the church of San Cecilio and the ecclesiastical complex of Santo Domingo, where the Shrine of the Virgen del Rosario never fails to impress. Convents such as that of Las Comendadoras de Santiago and palaces of Christian nobles, such as the Casa de los Tiros, adjoin urban spaces like the Campo del Príncipe to bear witness to the events which have occurred here in the past 500 years. Muslim Granada also has a presence here, with the Almohad palace of El Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo.

Centro Histórico Una vez que Isabel de Castilla y Fernando de Aragón reciben la ciudad de manos de Boabdil, el ultimo monarca nazarí, esta ciudad empieza a crecer y expandirse por diferente flancos, en algunos casos conservando lo existente y en otros sustituyendo. En el lugar que ocupaba la Mezquita Mayor, se alza la Catedral, junto a ella la Capilla Real, donde se encuentran sepultados los Reyes Católicos junto a su hija Juana y su marido Felipe de Borgoña. Vestigios del pasado musulmán como la Madraza, el Corral del Carbón y la Alcaicería conviven con construcciones más recientes y vanguardistas como el Centro Federico García Lorca y el Centro José Guerrero. Iglesias repartidas por todo el centro acogen un rico y variado patrimonio artístico y de imaginería, entre las que cabe destacar la Basílica de las Angustias.

Once Isabel of Castilla and Fernando of Aragón had received the city from the hands of Boabdil, the last Nasrid monarch, it started to grow and expand on different sides, in some cases retaining what was already there and in other cases replacing it. The cathedral was built on the site which used to be occupied by the Great Mosque and beside it is the Royal Chapel, where the Catholic Monarchs are buried together with their daughter Juana and her husband Felipe de Borgoña. Vestiges of the Muslim past such as La Madraza, the Corral del Carbón and the Alcaicería coexist alongside more recent and avantgarde constructions like the Federico García Lorca centre and the José Guerrero Centre. Churches are scattered all through the historic city centre, and they contain a wealth of art and imagery, especially the Basilica of Las Angustias.

Triunfo y Cartuja Muy cerca el impresionante monasterio renacentista de San Jerónimo acoge los restos del Gran Capitán, personaje militar clave para los Reyes Católicos por sus victorias militares y por su papel en la negociación para la rendición de Granada. Justo al lado, el hospital y Basílica barroca de San Juan de Dios, nos evoca el legado de un hombre que dio su vida por los más necesitados y cuya orden hospitalaria está repartida por los cinco continentes. Esta zona es epicentro de la vida universitaria, la plaza de la Universidad acoge edificios religiosos impulsados por los jesuitas, como el templo de los santos Justo y Pastor, o el antiguo colegio de San Pablo, edificio sede de la actual Facultad de Derecho. En dirección norte, por encima de los jardines del Triunfo se alza majestuoso el Hospital Real, actual sede de la Universidad de Granada y poco después el monasterio de la Cartuja, un compendio del mejor arte de la Edad Moderna, y un lugar que combina la austeridad monacal con el más álgido y abigarrado barroco español.

Very close by, the impressive Renaissance monastery of San Jerรณnimo contains the remains of the Gran Capitรกn, a key military personage for the Catholic Monarchs, not only for their military victories but also for his role in the negotiation for the rendition of Granada. Just beside this are the hospital and Baroque basilica of San Juan de Dios; these are the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to those in need and whose Hospitaller Order extends over the five continents. This area is the epicentre of university life. In the Plaza de la Universidad there are religious buildings set up by the Jesuits, such as the churches of Saints Justo and Pastor and the old San Pablo school, which is the present Faculty of Law building. To the north, the Royal Hospital rises majestically above the gardens of El Triunfo. Nowadays, this is the headquarters of the University of Granada. Soon afterwards we come to the monastery of La Cartuja, a compendium of the finest art of the Modern Age and a place which combines monastic austerity with the most supreme and varied Spanish Baroque.

Genil El rio Genil recibe las aguas de Sierra Nevada y de otros ríos menores que cruzan la ciudad o caminan junto a ella, junto a un entramado de acequias y acueductos que servían para llevar agua a diferentes rincones de la ciudad y de la vega, donde aún pueden visitarse algunos antiguos molinos harineros o papeleros como el de la Casa Molino Ángel Ganivet. Junto al río se encuentra la ermita de San Sebastián, enclave histórico donde la tradición ubica el acto de entrega de la ciudad, junto a un Alcázar musulmán que hoy acoge a la Fundación Francisco Ayala, y cuyos restos siguen apareciendo, como los que se encuentran en la magnífica estación Alcázar del Genil del metropolitano de Granada. Las diferentes ampliaciones urbanísticas más recientes han generado espacios de primer nivel, cerca y lejos del centro al mismo tiempo, tales como el museo más visitado de Andalucía, el Parque de las Ciencias donde se combina arquitectura, arte y conocimiento científico. Junto a él, la genial obra arquitectónica que forman el Cubo y el Centro Cultural Caja Granada. The Genil river receives the waters from the Sierra Nevada and other smaller rivers which cross the city or run beside it, together with a network of water channels and aqueducts which carry water to different parts of the city and the plain. You can still visit some of the old flour or paper mills, such as the Casa Molino Ángel Ganivet. Beside the river is the chapel of San Sebastián, a historic enclave where the city was said to have been handed over, next to a Muslim fortress which today houses the Francisco Ayala Foundation. Other remains from that era are also to be found, such as those at the magnificent Alcázar del Genil station on the Metro line in Granada. The most recent urban expansions have produced some first class spaces, in and outside the centre, such as Andalucía’s most-visited museum, the Science Park, which combines architecture, art and scientific knowledge. Beside it is the wonderful architecture of the Cubo and the Caja Granada Cultural Centre.

SANTA FE, Cuna de la Hispanidad THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE HISPANIC WORLD

Dos hechos históricos clave en la historia de España y de la humanidad han marcado el devenir de esta ciudad fortaleza construida a las puertas de Granada. Por un lado la negociación y firma el 25 de noviembre de 1491 de las Capitulaciones entre los Reyes Católicos y Boabdil, para la rendición de Granada, y la negociación entre los monarcas con Cristóbal Colón, que daría lugar a la firma el 17 de abril de 1492 de las Capitulaciones de Santa Fe, por el que los soberanos acordaban financiar y avalar el proyecto que dio lugar al descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo. De aquella época guarda y conserva el trazado de su casco histórico, con dos ejes o calles principales que se cruzan dando lugar a una plaza central de armas, y que empiezan y terminan en cuatro puertas o arcos que, siglos atrás eran las únicas vías de entrada a la ciudad amurallada. Hoy reciben en su interior, convertidas en capillas, a visitantes que a través de visitas dramatizadas y ambientadas en el siglo XV, conocen de primera mano los avatares de la historia en la ciudad. Two key events in the history of Spain and of humanity marked the future of this fortress town, which was built almost at the gates of Granada. One took place on 25 November 1491, when the ‘Capitulaciones’, or contracts, for the surrender of Granada were negotiated and signed by the Catholic Monarchs and Boabdil, the last King of Granada. The other was on 17 April 1492, after negotiations between Christopher Columbus and Queen Isabel and King Fernando, when the monarchs signed the ‘Capitulaciones de Santa Fe’, agreeing to finance and endorse the project which led to the discovery of the New World. Today, the layout of the oldest part of the town is still the same as it was during that period, with two main streets which intersect to create a central square. They begin and end at four arched gateways which, centuries ago, were the only way of entering the walled town. These have now been converted into chapels and there, through dramatised visits set in the 15th century, visitors can learn all about the most important events in Santa Fe’s history.

This town can boast of being the Birthplace of the Hispanic World, something which brings places, cultures and peoples of Europe and America together while respecting their diversity and multiculturality. That is why at the heart of the Vega de Granada plain a door is open to America, to discover, value and promote the best of its sister continent. This is reaffirmed in April every year with a festival to commemorate the Capitulaciones de Santa Fe, which has now been classified as an Andalucían Tourism Event. As well as its history, Santa Fe has a range of cultural attractions and a variety of unusual events and traditions, some of which are really lovely, such as the ‘Quema de El Penas’ in August and the Corpus Christi procession in late spring. In addition, its gastronomy and confectionery (especially the famous cakes called Piononos de Santa Fe), make this town in the Vega de Granada a place which must be visited in order to understand, experience and enjoy our own history

It is a real paradise of biodiversity. For more than 1,000 years, the integration of Man in the difficult terrain of the southern slope of the Sierra Nevada has created a unique landscape. The interaction between different cultures such as the Andalusian Muslim, Mozarabic and later Castilian, has made La Alpujarra a remarkable area, with its architecture, terraces for agriculture, its water channels to take advantage of the melting snow in Sierra Nevada, its rich and varied gastronomy, its customs and traditions. The water from Lanjarón, ham from Trevélez, delicious flower honey, wines, rugs, fabrics, wickerwork and ceramics are just some of its treasures. This totally unique region has now begun the application process for classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Por contra, la vertiente norte de Sierra Nevada nos ofrece una vista totalmente diferente, el Marquesado del Zenete y Guadix y el Altiplano, Baza y Huéscar presentan un paisaje de tierras rojas y fértiles valles con un impresionante legado histórico y arqueológico. Este estratégico cruce de caminos fue motivo para que estas tierras ya estuvieran habitadas en la prehistoria. Roma, el Islam y posteriormente el cristianismo dejaron sus huellas en sus pueblos, algunas de ellas de extraordinaria belleza y valor. Pero una de sus principales características son sin duda sus casas cueva. Al estar excavadas en la tierra se consigue un aislamiento térmico que hace que sean cálidas en invierno y frescas en verano, son acogedoras y sencillas, y cada vez son más las cuevas que se ofertan como alojamiento turístico, algo que hace que cada vez sea más la gente que termine enamorada de este tipo de vivienda. El Cascamorras de Guadix y Baza, las fiestas de moros y cristianos de Benamaurel y otras poblaciones del entorno, los dólmenes de Gorafe y la historia de los primeros hombres en Orce, las Sierras de Castril y Baza, la cerámica de la zona, el cordero segureño y otras delicias gastronómicas son otros alicientes para convertir a estas comarcas en destinos imprescindibles.

In contrast, the northern slope of the Sierra Nevada gives us a completely different view. In the Marquesado del Zenete and Guadix and the Altiplano, Baza and HuĂŠscar the landscape is of reddish soil and fertile valleys, with an impressive historical and archaeological heritage. This strategic crossing of ways was the reason these lands were inhabited in prehistory. Rome, Islam and later Christianity left their legacy on its villages, some of which are extraordinarily beautiful and valuable. However, one of the principal features of this area is, without a doubt, its cave houses. As these have been excavated from the rock their thermal isolation makes them warm in winter and cool in summer. They are charming and simple, and more and more caves are now available as tourist accommodation. As a result, an increasing number of people are becoming enamoured of this type of property. The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Cascamorrasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of Guadix and Baza; the Moors and Christians festivals in Benamaurel and other villages in the area; the dolmens of Gorafe and the history of the first humans at Orce; the Castril and Baza mountain ranges; the local ceramics; the lamb from Segura and other culinary delicacies are other attractions which make this a region which just has to be visited.

A pocos kilómetros de la ciudad de Granada, en el extremo más occidental del macizo montañoso se encuentra la estación de esquí más meridional de Europa, un paraíso para los amantes del deporte blanco. Sierra Nevada es posiblemente la estación de esquí que oferta una mayor variedad de actividades y servicios de calidad de carácter deportivo, cultural, medioambiental, gastronómico, educativo, empresarial y lúdico. A few kilometres from the city of Granada, on the far west side of the mountains, is the most southerly ski station in Europe, a paradise for lovers of snow sports. Sierra Nevada is possibly the ski resort which offers the greatest variety of activities and quality sports, combined with cultural, environmental, gastronomic, educational, business and leisure services. It has more than 130 pistes covering over 100 kms, the greatest skiable slope (1,200m) in Spain, fantastic quality snow and areas for all abilities, ranging from those who want to get the adrenaline flowing to beginners who have come to learn. The Sulayr superpark, a benchmark for lovers of Freestyle and Snowboarding, and the chance to ski and snowboard at night, with 5.8 kms of illuminated runs, makes the Sierra Nevada a favourite ski resort for younger people.

320 days of sun a year, an average annual temperature of 20ºC, dozens of beaches and small coves of crystal-clear waters, beautiful cliffs and marinas are just some of the features of the Costa Tropical. Its name comes from the exceptionally gentle climate all year round, and for two centuries this has made it the only place in Europe where sub-tropical fruits are grown, such as mangos, chirimoyas, avocados and papayas. From the natural beauty spot of the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs in the west to the beaches of La Rábida to the east, there are numerous spots which are well worth discovering. In places such as La Herradura, Almuñécar, Salobreña, Motril, Torrenueva, Castell de Ferro and La Rábita you can practise sports such as surfing, diving, sailing, waterskiing and golf, among others, as well as sampling the local gastronomy and taking a stroll on the long seafront promenades to enjoy the cool air on the warm summer nights.

La fértil Vega de Granada regada por el Genil, fue testigo de la llegada del gran ejército de los Reyes Católicos para fundar la ciudad fortaleza de Santa Fe y poner fin al último reino musulmán de la península. Esta misma ciudad, poco después, en 1492, fue escenario de la firma del contrato entre los monarcas y Cristóbal Colón, conocido como Capitulaciones de Santa Fe, para financiar y facilitar el viaje del Almirante a las indias que dio lugar al descubrimiento del nuevo mundo, hecho que supuso también el nacimiento de una nueva era histórica, la Edad Contemporánea. Entre sus alquerías y cortijadas se fue configurando un paisaje agrícola que, no sin dificultades, aún pervive. Hoy gran parte de esta comarca forma parte del cinturón metropolitano de Granada.

The fertile Vega de Granada plain, which is irrigated by the Genil river, witnessed the arrival of the great army of the Catholic Monarchs to found the fortress town of Santa Fe and put an end to the last Muslim kingdom in Spain. Not long after that, in 1492, it was in this same town that the monarchs signed the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Capitulaciones de Santa Feâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, the contract to finance and assist Christian Columbus on his voyage to the Indies which led to the Discovery of the New World. It was a feat which also saw the birth of a new period in history, the Contemporary Age. An agricultural landscape was created among the farms and estates at that time and, not without difficulties, it still survives today. Nowadays, a large part of this area is within the metropolitan belt of Granada.

The LecrĂn Valley is halfway between the coast and Granada city. It is a small rural area where orange and lemon trees perfume the air with an intoxicating fragrance of blossom. Mills standing beside streams and rivers, Moorish castles, charming cottages and small villages make this a unique and delightful place to explore.

Desde la comarca del Poniente se fue fraguando el fin de la campaña militar frente al dominio musulmán. Alhama de Granada, Loja, Montefrío y Moclín fueron núcleos fundamentales en la última frontera de Al Ándalus y hoy son bellos municipios blancos de estrechas y empinadas calles, junto a antiguas alcazabas y castillos, con vistas de ensueño que bien merecen una escapada. Para completarla, no hay nada mejor que degustar algunos de los manjares de la comarca, tales como la Trucha, esturión y caviar de Riofrío, espárragos de Huétor Tájar, queso artesanal de cabra de Montefrío o Játar, vino y setas de Alhama, tomates y hortalizas del llano de Zafarraya y la repostería morisca de Loja. Pero lo mejor de la provincia de Granada, como no podía ser de otra manera, es su gente. Educada, afable, honrada y trabajadora, los granadinos hacen de su casa, su calle y su ciudad un espacio abierto al mundo, un lugar donde disfrutar de la vida.

It was in the Poniente area to the west that the military campaign against Muslim domination was planned. Alhama de Granada, Loja, Montefrío and Moclín were fundamental places on the final frontier of Al Ándalus and today they are pretty white towns with steep narrow streets, old fortresses and castles and fantastic views, making them lovely places to visit. To complete the experience, there is nothing better than to enjoy some of the local products, such as the trout, sturgeon and caviar of Riofrío, asparagus from Huétor Tájar, artisan goats’ milk cheese from Montefrío or Játar, wine and wild mushrooms from Alhama, tomatoes and vegetables from the flat area of Zafarraya and the Moorish confectionery of Loja. However, the best of Granada province – and how could it be otherwise – is the people. Courteous, friendly, honourable and hard-working, the ‘granadinos’ open their home, their streets and their city to the world, as a place in which life can be enjoyed.

El Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, todo un referente a nivel internacional, reúne cada año en la ciudad, y en escenarios únicos, a las mejores orquestas e intérpretes del mundo, compañías de danza y artistas varios para disfrutar de las primeras noches del verano. The International Music and Dance Festival of Granada, which is now world-famous, brings the world’s best orchestras, dance companies and a wide variety of artists to the city every year, to perform in the evenings of early summer. During the rest of the year different events attract top Spanish and international names to Granada, such as the International Poetry Festival, the Southern Film Festival, The Quiquiriqui Puppet Theatre, International Jazz Festival, HocusPocus Magic Festival and the annual show about Lorca which takes place at the Generalife theatre in July and August. A special mention should also be given to Zaidín Rock and the Granada Sound Alternative Music Festival. There are also important events elsewhere in the province, such as the Costa Jazz Festival at Almuñecar, the ‘El Rinconcillo de Cristobica’ Theatre Festival at the Federico García Lorca House-Museum in Valderrubio, The International Comedy Theatre Festival in Santa Fe and the Parapanda Folk Festival in Íllora, among others.

A stroll through history between the Alhambra and the Albaicín The Alhambra and Albaicín are today closer than ever, linked by the Dobla de Oro, a cultural tourism route designed by the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife which aims to strengthen the ties between the city’s oldest district and the Alhambra group of monuments, both of which are Unesco World Heritage Sites. From La Sabika hill, on which the Alhambra stands, the Albaicín appears as a splash of white houses sprinkled with the vertical shapes of cypress trees and bell towers of churches which were once mosques. From the Albaicín, by contrast, the Alhambra is a thick forest whose trees are crowned by the saffron walls of the Alcazaba, the Nasrid palaces and their towers. The Dobla de Oro invites us to immerse ourselves in a unique cultural landscape, a glittering path through the great Hispano-Muslim monuments of Granada, declared World Heritage Sites by Unesco, as we wander through bewitchingly beautiful streets which are full of life and touched by the magic of history, art and flamenco.
