w2 _MUSCLE MEMORY & CUBE IN SPACE

I was fairly familiar with the muscle memory exercises through various interviews and demos with Peter posted online, but I was so surprised by how long each exercise took.

Nevertheless, they helped build my confidence to draw with a pen, which has become foreign from a number of years fearing it. One thing I’ve always struggled with is line weight so I really tried to push myself to be comfortable with thicker line weight. I think it’s an improvement from my past drawings but still needs to push myself a bit more through repetition.

w3_SHAPE MANIPULATION + HATCHING

Adding a darker outline and cross contours on the forms really makes a difference. The outline makes the object pop and the cross contours relay the surface information.

Adding and subtracting form was really challenging. Although the planar forms were easier, it still took me sometime to understand how the objects intersects. I definitely need more practice on shape manipulation moving forward.

w4_RENDERING + INSECT

I have been so obsessed with perfecting every drawing that I completely burned out this week. My fear of making the “wrong” mark on the page grew and it became a hindrance to my progress.

In week 5, Peter’s comment changed my perspective of my sketches.

w5_CARS

This week was a major struggle for two (2) reasons. 1) I’ve never drawn cars and 2) all the construction lines were overwhelming. However, looking back, I’m glad that this was an assignment. It really pushed me to draw subjects beyond my comfort zone and helped me learn a different way to study new subject matter.

Peter’s comment about the psychological effect of crossing off the “bad sketches” also changed my perception of my sketches. Now, I always try to add notes on what to improve rather than scribbling it off. It definitely builds a growth mindset and eases frustration.

w6_ANIMAL

We learned how the understanding of a skeletal structure can help inform our drawing. I’ve always struggled and feared drawing animals throughout my art journey. Some feature on their body always look off and it discouraged me from drawing animals for a long time.

I will continue to practice animal sketches and focus on scale and proportion, which are two principles that I struggled with for this week. Overall, I definitely prefer drawing creatures over cars!

w7_AIRPLANE

We are back at it with the machines! For the airplanes, I continued to struggle with foreshortening, scale control and shape manipulation. I still don’t fully understand how to pinpoint the various parts of an airplane once cross contour is involved, such as for three-quarter (3/4) views and perspective. Maybe more studies will be helpful.

Learning about the various cars and airplanes has also been an eye-opening. I was surprised by all these innovative designs that had been around for decades.

w8_COSTUME

I had the best time with this assignment. I’ve always enjoy drawing human figure, so it was a satisfying experience to practice how to draw clothes properly.

Nevertheless, it was still as struggle. I would find myself getting lost in all the lineworks and trying to copy every single folds and shadow shape on the fabric. Looking back, I should’ve blocked out the big shapes first, then add additional details where necessary. Finding that happy medium and learning to look at the big picture are a few things I hope to continue striving throughout this journey.

Thank you for a wonderful session, Peter!

This course was a challenging, yet fulfilling experience. I really appreciate how all the assignments pushed me out of my comfort zone and I hope to continue to push my boundary moving forward. An important lesson

I will be taking with me is to be accepting of the imperfections and learn from it or work with it.

In addition, I learned to acknowledge and be comfortable with the uncomfortable learning curve.

Throughout the entire course, I continued to struggle with time management, which I hope to have better control in the future.

Thank you again for your lectures, art tips/tricks and life lessons! Until next time!
