BADAMI CAVE TEMPLES
The caves are important examples of Indian rock-cut architecture, especially Badami Chalukya architecture
Spaces carved into the sandstone hills, structurally stable as well
is a story of solids and voids
SOLIDS
In contrast to the cut-out spaces, solid blocks, cantilevered from the hill
VOIDS
Spaces created as cut-outs through the hill, replicating rockcut architecture in Badami caves

Built spaces oriented towards west side for sunset views
The site is chosen in the North-west

HOUSING ON THE MOVE I 05
IDEA OF HOME
Initial exercise was to depict the idea of home through paintings
The idea of inferiority, sufferings and unstable living conditions of the minor community is majorly depicted in the above paintings
DRAWBACKS
One of the major reasons that led to multiple machans were lack of space for living
The accessible streets were narrow and hence there wasn’t any space available to build
Hence the design solution was to design the circulation spaces that lead to these dwellings
SITE LOCATION
OKALIPURA, BANGALORE KARNATAKA
These real time images show very narrow circulation spaces as seen in most of the minor community housing HOUSING ON THE MOVE I 06
DESIGN INTENT
To create primary and secondary spaces along with circulation space
The circulation spaces within the project were analyzed and classified into the types mentioned below :
Direction of movement : horizontal or vertical
HORIZONTAL- hallways, paths, entrance and exits
Columns, trees, topographic changes
VERTICAL- stairs, lifts and ramps
Type of use : public, private
PUBLIC- widely and easily accessible
Overlapped with other functions such as lobby, parks and other facilities
PRIVATE : privacy, spaces/circulation specific to one unit
Frequency of use : common or emergency

Designing a watch tower
Concept of using a tensile roof as a temporary shelter
IDEA OF CAMOUFLAGE
Built spaces to appear hidden when viewed from outside
1. Functional spaces in the subterranean level (appears hidden)
2. Roof shelter to be provided in the form of tensile structure that can mimic the contour line of the site (the project blends in with the natural surroundings)

SELF SUFFICIENT CLUSTERS
The design approach was to study the existing neighborhood of the site chosen and overcome the common drawbacks seen
This project focuses more on having interactive clusters which is a counterpart to what is seen on the site

ROOFS
Roofs are built using locally available grey shaded stone slabs that absorb the heat and lets minimum amount of heat penetrate
Openings are provided on the roof for regulating the amount of sunlight into the living space
DESIGN IDEAS
PLATFORMS
A place for people to rest or relax after work hours
This structure was integrated with the landscape (rocks) situated under trees which gave shade to the space
How does it work?
CLUSTER PLAN
This cluster Integrates the space of interaction Entrance is broad and elongated, giving opportunities for all the communities
Common backyard space is interconnected to create a larger space , accessible by all the houses.
To accommodate more space, temporary mezzanine floors are used which was also used to increase the interior space
Openings are provided on the roof and at a higher level on the walls

Grey shaded stone slabs are used for the roofs, to resist the heat getting into the space
CONSTRUCTION
DETAILS
Climate here is very hot and humid, and also most of the houses in the village are built very close to each other hardly leaving any space between them. In such cases, windows on the walls is not sufficient for light to enter inside the living space. Hence, most of the house have small openings provided at the top that lets sufficient amount of light inside the house

PROJECT BRIEF
• In collaboration with VILLAGE VOLUNTEERS, tiger watch, Program spreads awareness to the village volunteers about the movement and habitat of animals through documentaries and photographs captured by professional photographers It also assists them with the geography of the forest (to place camera traps)
• With about 5-6 schools in close vicinity, the programs also spreads awareness to the school students through WORKSHOPS, about the mitigation of human-wildlife conflict, off-site medical assistance and technical skills for a better future and coexistence of humans and wildlife
• EXHIBITS, documentaries and info-graphic walkways within the project, attract the tourists
