STRENGTHENING MARRIAGES AT JASPER VENTURES

W

hen people think about a marriage course, most feel as though if they attend, it means their marriage is in trouble. That should not be the case. At some point through the hustle and bustle of everyday life we find ourselves drifting apart from our spouses, and the longer we go without growing our connection, the harder it can be to get it back on the track with the same connection as when we first met. BY JIMMY FORGY,

Coatings Superintendent

This Marriage Course helps us come back together as partners by giving simple tools to strengthen communication, feelings, and that special spark that drew us together as a couple in the beginning. It allows us to see the importance of setting time aside for each other and how it is important to keep God and prayer alive and foremost in our lives. It does not matter if you have been married one year or 50 years, there are always things you can do to make your marriage stronger and better. People come to this course for many reasons. The most apparent is the chance to reconnect in a way that goes beyond the normal day-to-day routines. As for my wife Kristi and me, it has opened communication on our wants and desires for the future. It has given us insight into how to keep the fires burning and to show appreciation for the little things that we do for each other daily. I would suggest this course to anyone, even if you think you have the perfect marriage. There is always that little extra we can do to make it better.

Remember 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

THE GARDENING PROCESS BY DAWN ALLRED, HR Payroll Administrator and Amazing Gardener

Being in business for this long does not happen by accident. It requires immense work and extraordinary attention. A good analogy to consider here is farming. A crop does not just miraculously appear but must be carefully cultivated. The farmer must prepare the field to grow something – loosening and breaking up the soil, destroying weeds and sowing seed. Even though many of us may have limited knowledge of farming, most of us can agree that farming is hard work. Farmers often work 365 days a year, regardless of circumstances, how they feel or what the weather brings, because crops must be fertilized and watered, weeds must be pulled, and the field must be tended. Prepare soil with manure and compost several weeks prior to planting.

Plant seeds based on the instructions found on the seed packet. Some seeds may be started using seed trays indoors. Cover your seed tray with domes to facilitate higher germination rates, and place in a warm south facing window or on a heat mat. After seedlings have emerged, place them under growth lights to assist stronger growth. When seedlings have more than 4 leaves, transition them to a slightly larger container to encourage root growth. When planting outside, make a 4” x 4” hole, sprinkle 2-3 tablespoons of organic vegetable fertilizer in

the hole under the plant, place seedling in hole, surround with soil, compress soil lightly to remove air pockets, and water well.

Water plants regularly in the early morning or evening, not in the heat of the day.

Prune/tend/cultivate for fuller and stronger plants. Bell peppers can be pruned to encourage branch growth. Tomatoes are pruned to eliminate suckers and make stronger plants. Pruning facilitates sun filtration and air flow. Mulching reduces weeds, retains moisture and helps enrich soil.

Enjoy your fresh and nutritious veggies!

CULTIVATING A BUSINESS:

A LOOK BACK AT 1992 BY CARRIE-ANN JASPER-YEARTY,

Vice President of People & Culture WITH WORDS OF WISDOM FROM JON JASPER,

Founder

We are incredibly grateful that Jasper Ventures is celebrating its 30th year in business this year. Many people looking at this company today may have no idea about its humble beginnings, but the Jasper Ventures you see today looked very different back in 1992. EPC had many struggles early on as the company was scavenging for opportunities, taking gut-wrenching risks, and sometimes suffering large losses. Jon Jasper describes the early days as living day by day, paycheck by paycheck – just finding ways to survive.

9

JA SPE R JO U R NAL | 1ST Q UAR TER 202 2

He said if he had known how much work it would take just to keep the company afloat, he is not sure he would have done it. He is thankful the Lord strengthened and sustained him through these years of hardship.

Building a business is hard work, and every day, just like a farmer, Jon Jasper showed up to do the work, even as he battled brain cancer. He continued to show up day after day, month after month, year after year. And just like farming takes time and commitment, so does growing a business. Relationships must be nurtured and tended. Workers must be hired and trained. Unwanted weeds must be removed. Fields must be watered and fertilized. And even then, the crop is not

Lord for his steadfastness and strength. Psalm 130:5 was close to Jon’s heart during this time and even today: “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word, I put my hope.” He says it is a daily posture of submission to wait on the Lord and to place our hope in Him that has made the difference for him, and he encourages each of us to do the same.

In the Bible, Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, “I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and

The oil and gas industry is full of highs and lows, trials and tribulations, joy and suffering and it took faith, humility, and dependence on the Lord to trust in His timing and His plan for this business. It was challenging for Jon to run a business without immediately seeing the fruits of his labor. Many people would have given up, but we are grateful that Jon relied on the

PRUNING OUR LIVES How cutting negativity and waste personally and professionally can make 2022 one of our best years

BY JIM NEWBERG,

Automation Manager

11

2020 and 2021 were exceedingly difficult years for each of us personally and for the world alike. We faced challenges and adversities that we never expected. In that environment, it is extremely easy to cling to negativity and hopelessness. I often found myself questioning many things and walking down that negative path. It did not take long to realize that my negative thoughts and attitude were not helping myself or anyone around me.

JA SPE R JO U R NAL | 1ST Q UAR TER 202 2

After much prayer, with God’s help, I came to the realization that I needed to purge the negativity from my life and find good in all that I could. Times were dark and I needed to make the choice to be a light to anyone I could. In order to do that, I needed to prune and cut away all the things that were taking me down that negative road. In John 15:1-4, Jesus explains that pruning is an essential part of being a Christian. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit, he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” With God as the core of our lives, we can flourish, but we must cut off and prune the things that do not bring us closer to Him. This can seem impossible, but it isn’t. If you want to change and have a desire to change,

Bad things happen to everyone. How you choose to respond is completely up to you. We can decide to harbor the bad or we can find a way to turn it into something positive. With God in our hearts, negativity has no place and as we begin removing those negative things, we can put energy into things that bring light into the world. This is true in our personal lives as it is in our business lives. For example, Job 420/434 was reported by our customer, field personnel, and project manager to be one of our most successful and smooth jobs. This was a team effort that started long before deployment ever happened on this job. The engineering team has been working on processes that create clarity and prune out waste by giving clear expectations to our vendors, to our employees, and what the product should look like and how it should perform. Similar processes have been put in place in our Troup shop and the field with quality control, product tracking, and process management. Pruning waste saves money, time, and effort and makes us sustainable. Proper pruning can be painful, but the result is always positive growth. For plants,

“With God as the core of our lives, we can flourish, but we must cut off and prune the things that do not bring us closer to Him.” then you can prune. This can be habits, people, activities, or even just an attitude. Sometimes we must love people that were holding us back from a distance in order to grow. Sometimes we have to quit long-standing habits in order to become someone we could have always been.

they produce better fruit or flowers. For the workforce, a company will grow and not be stale. For people like you and me, we grow in God and become positive lights that influence those around us to do the same.

GROWING WITHIN JASPER VENTURES BY LIZ LOW, Executive Assistant

I

f you asked me the definition of growth several years ago, my answer would have been that growth is moving your way up the corporate ladder and never slowing down until you get to the top. If you ask me that question today, my answer is much different. Growth means stepping out of your comfort zone, learning and doing new things. It’s acknowledging your weaknesses and finding ways to strengthen those weaknesses.

“My hope for 2022 is that JV can gain the confidence of new clients and that we are able to prove to these new clients what we have already proven to our existing clients for the past 3 decades: that JV is a fully capable, turnkey, EPC company in the Midstream Sector.” Adam Glover

Think of an ivy plant. Its long vines seem endless and know no boundaries. It grows in all different directions: up, down and even sideways sometimes. One of the great things about Jasper Ventures is how the company encourages growth of all kinds: professional, spiritual and personal. Even better is that they provide the tools to help their employees grow in all these directions. I would encourage you to look at where you are and determine what direction you feel you may want to, or need to grow in, and then talk with your manager so they can get you growing in that direction. Regardless of the direction, the most important thing is that we never stop growing.

FORGET AND SEE: GOD LEADS US IN NEW DIRECTIONS BY MELISSA WINEBARGER, Beyond Business Manager

A

15

s I write this many of you have committed to new things for the year 2022. The Biggest Loser is in full swing and many of you are developing healthful habits that will lead you to a better feeling and looking body. One of our new employees just had a baby. While one of our employees continues in school another began her master’s program. Some of you have committed to being more caring or more disciplined in an area of your life. Whatever you had set for the new year, you likely anticipated something new.

We also find promises that say, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is exciting, my friends. The Bible also tells us, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekial 36:26). For those who believe in Christ, this new heart is the gift, the promise He gives. We get to be made new. We get a do-over again and again. We receive grace. Nothing we do earns this new.

The Beyond Business word for the year is new. This simple word can be used in a wide range of contexts. The Scripture chosen for 2022 is Isaiah 43:19, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Just before this in verse 18 we read, “Forget the former things, do not dwell on the past.” God is telling the people of Israel to forget and see.

While there are many times we need to remember and recall the goodness of the Lord, in these texts the Lord is telling his people to forget. He wants us to forget our former way of life. The sinful ways, failures, mistakes, the voices of the past, the things that didn’t or did happen. Our steadfast God wants us to forget some things – to let go – so that we can see the new thing(s) He is doing.

JA SPE R JO U R NAL | 1ST Q UAR TER 202 2

W

For Jasper Ventures, let’s forget the hard wilderness and wasteland that has been the last two years. Let’s be thankful for the perseverance and strengthening in leadership and processes during these times. Let’s see and believe the Lord for new things He is doing and will do. God’s mercies are new each new day. With every challenge, He will make the way. Let’s believe together for new jobs, new relationships with new companies, new salvations (new hearts), new innovations and insight. God is doing new things. I can trust this even when it is not apparent because I know this is His heart – to see all things made new.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19

CULTIVATING A BUSINESS:

JASPER VENTURES TODAY BY CARRIE-ANN JASPER-YEARTY,

Vice President of People & Culture WITH WORDS OF WISDOM FROM JON JASPER,

Founder

It has been almost 11,000 days since Jon Jasper founded EPC and he is still minding the field. Although his role has changed as the company has grown and evolved, he still feels responsibility for the workers and for the harvest. It is a good reminder to all of us that our work here is not done. As all of us pull together to continue the legacy that Jon created, we are now the ones sowing seeds with clients, tending to our work relationships, weeding out processes that no longer work and plowing through

17

JA SPE R JO U R NAL | 1ST Q UAR TER 202 2

tasks that must be completed. And in leadership, we are committing to honor this company as God’s company, as Jon intended, working with integrity and humility, which he considers the keys to successful leadership. As we work together as stewards of this field – this business – faithfully managing what God has entrusted to us, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). Cultivation ensures the farmer will produce as plentiful a crop as possible. It is not always the result, but it is certainly the goal. If the farmer is not willing to put in the effort, if he fails to cultivate his field, if he does nothing to promote growth, then the field begins to deteriorate. The same holds true for this business. We want this business to produce a bountiful crop, to offer challenging work for employees, to provide valuable products and services to our industry, and to help our community and world flourish. 2 Corinthians 9:6 says, “Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” Every farmer knows that the size of the harvest is directly proportionate to the amount of seed sown. In this context, we are reminded that generous givers will reap generous blessings from God while those that hold back will miss out on what God might have for them. And remember, when we sow seed, we do not

get back seed, our return is something even better. Generosity is about more than money. We can be generous with many things – our energy, our time, our abilities, our knowledge, our compassion, and our experience. As we look ahead toward what the next 30 years might bring, let us do so with gratefulness for where we have been and with a posture of selflessness and generosity toward one another as we share the gifts God has given each of us to be able to work this field to His glory. “WHATEVER YOU DO, WORK AT IT WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AS WORKING FOR THE LORD, NOT FOR MEN.” COLOSSIANS 3:23

REFLECTION Questions •

What is the new thing you see God doing?

What is He wanting you to forget/let go of?

Have you trusted Him to give you a new heart?

What is one thing you can do each day to practice gratitude? How about generosity?
