lined up at this time. The decision to leave Jasper after one year has left many in the JISD administration and community stunned. “It was a complete surprise to me,” said Jasper ISD Superintendent Dr. Jon Whittemore. “He just came into my office and handed me his letter of resignation. “We hate to see him leave because he was doing some great things with the kids,” Whittemore said. “He did a good job for us.” Morgan compiled a 6-5 overall record overall, 4-0 in district in his first year at the helm of the Bulldogs. Morgan was hired away from Carthage last year.
But all of the good will that Morgan brought to the program ended Monday, March 19 when he announced that he is leaving Jasper after one year. More than 30-40 members of the community attended the meeting hoping to address the board members but since the meeting was called, no public forum was scheduled for the meeting. Many of the attendees are members of the Jasper Football Booster Club and had hoped that Morgan and JISD could resolve any differences that would allow the first-year coach to stay in Jasper. When Morgan exited the meeting, he declined any comment on the

board has requested a called meeting for the opportunity to vote on whether to accept, or not accept, the resignation of Garrett Morgan.” Jasper Superintendent Dr. Jon Whittemore said he has “no idea” what the next step would be if the board chose to reject Morgan’s resignation. “I don’t know if he would commit to another year or if he would just stay for the rest of this year,” Whittemore said. Jasper ISD Human Resources Director and A s s i s t a n t Superintendent Chris Coleman said the job posting was placed on the district’s website Tuesday, March 20. “Right now the toughest part of this will be a time table to fill this position,” Coleman said. “We need to try to find some-

one for the kids before the end of school so we need to act on this very quickly.” But with Thursday’s meeting and a Monday meeting, that timetable might be pushed back a little bit more while the board hashes out the entire situation. In the prior coaching hires, the district normally has posted the position for a couple of weeks while it gathered resumes and then cut that number down to its top choices. After interviews are completed, a final choice is then recommended to the board. At that rate, the district might not be looking until early May until naming a new head coach for the program and possibly lose a big portion of the spring workouts.
Spring is in the air and Easter will soon be here. The Easter Bunny is coming back to town and visiting First National Bank Jasper.

With the sudden resignation of Garrett Morgan Monday, March 19, the district will once again be in the market for a coach to head up its football program and its athletic department. Or will it? Many in the community are speculating that JISD’s Board of Trustees are attempting to mediate the situation that led to Morgan’s resignation in an attempt to get the first-year coach to stay with the district. According to Kevin Kipp, president of the JISD Board of Trustees, a board meeting was been called for Monday, March 26 at 5 p.m. “Standard district procedure allows for JISD administration to accept employee resignations on behalf of the district,” Kipp said. “However, the
meeting and hugged all of his well wishers who attended the meeting. The board then met with JISD Superintendent Dr. Jon Whittemore, Human Resources Director and Assistant Superintendent Chris Coleman and Director of Education Gwen Gilford to discuss the issue. The JISD board has called another special meeting for Monday, March 26 to further discuss the issue. It is unclear at this time whether Morgan will be called back to address the board or not. The results of this meeting were not known at press time. An update will be published at www.jaspernewsboy.com
