Solid Foundations — New Beginnings

Still leading the pack Medical needs go unmatched in tri-county By JIMMY GALVAN Editor

When it comes to meeting the needs of an area, the East Texas region is well taken care of. With hospitals in Jasper, Lufkin and Woodville ready to meet the needs of the public and a medical community, this area is ready to take on all medical challenges that might lie ahead. “Our medical facilities in this region are incredible,”

“Medical growth is not only viable but it is necessary for both industry and communities. Having a good healthcare system is attractive to all parties.” said Trent Ashby, chairman of the Texas Forest Country. “We hear it all the time about how wonderful our medical facilities are in this region. “Whether it is in Jasper, Lufkin, Beaumont, we feel that on the healthcare side of

things we are well positioned and we are getting better,” Ashby said. “Our hospitals see the trends. Our hospitals in this region understand how important this is and are prepared to meet the challenge.” Mark Durand, marketing

director for Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital said, Christus Jasper Memorial remains a gateway to Lufkin and Beaumont as far as medical care is concerned. “We are just as important to them as they are to us,”

Durand said. As part of that growth, Christus Jasper Memorial is undergoing a renovation project on its emergency room and a general facelift on its hospital facilities. “The nice thing is when the emergency room exit is being changed to come off of Hwy. 190 and the old covered walkways are being changed and people travel that highway will see this modern looking See Medical, Page 9C

With a recent renovation project, Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital will soon be stepping up its emergency room services. Jasper Hospital District (JHD) broke ground on Jan. 9 for the new C. Bryce Thomas, M.D. Memorial Emergency Center at CHRISTUS Jasper Memorial Hospital. Expected completion of the project is January 2013. “If we have good weather, then I expect by November or December to have that ER open,” said JHD Chairman of the Board Charlie Nicholson. The project is the result of a study commissioned by the Hospital District Board to determine the need for and size of a new emergency center. The study concluded that a new state of the art Emergency Center with 16 treatment rooms (six Urgent Care and 10 Emergent Care) would provide for the immediate and future needs of the citizens within the JHD jurisdiction. “It is a great honor to be able to announce this project. We have

the night without affecting the operations of the Emergent Care Unit. This should result in increased staff utilization and efficiency. Phase Two and Three of the project will be the renovation of current Emergency Department (ED) into additional space for the Medical Imaging Department and the Laboratory. The CT machine will be relocated in the emergency department and a new MRI housed inside the hospital replacing the See ER, Page 5C

Nursing pathway

AC program helps provides Nursing leaders of tomorrow... nurses for tomorrow www.angelina.edu

By JODIE WARNER Staff Writer

Angelina CollegeJasper Teaching Center offers a full program with a rewarding career after graduation. The LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) Program graduates students every year from our area and gives them not only a pathway to a rewarding career, but also a quality education carries on with them. Honore HaltomBailey, R.N. is the head of the nursing program at the Jasper Teaching Center, she has been so for going on four years but she has also worked with Angelina for approximately eight years in full-time and part-time positions and has been a nurse for 26 years. She said that the Jasper Teaching Center offers students great resources such as online testing, learning, and a library stocked with computers for students to use. Bailey said, “My program is a one year program, it required at this time, or currently, no prerequisites. The only requirement is that they have a high school diploma or a GED.” She also suggests

though, “in my opinion the more classes that you take beforehand, [the more prepared you are.]” She said that acceptance into the program is based on the HESI A-2 score, “for people interested, they can order a study guide online or they can go through the Angelina College Bookstore.” She said that if she were trying to get into the program she would, “start by coming to an information session and at that information session they will detail everything they need to do. Students are given a choice of what campus they want to attend, they are given a first, second and third choice.” She also said that students can attend any information session, not just one based with the location the student prefers to attend. “An information session is mandatory, they must attend one, or they cannot be in the next year’s class,” Bailey explained. She also explained, “The Board of Nursing (BON) governs all nursing programs and they are not necessarily there to protect nurses, but patients…they [students] do have to pass

certain background checks [comparable] to the FBI.” Bailey says that then she would, “go to the main campus and pay for the HESI A-2 test and right now we are taking the top scores so you can see that if someone took anatomy and physiology one and two, medical terminology, and/or a dosage calculations class within the college system that could help them on that, the more you take before the better.” She also says, “For some this is a stepping stone and for some this is where you’re meant to be, bloom where you’re planted.” Bailey believes that for some students the LVN program is a beginning to other careers, such as obtaining an R.N (Registered Nurse) and for some it is a perfect fit. Bailey teaches to ten students in her classroom every week day, but she also has approximately 60 other students on other campuses that learn from her via remote viewing with interactive TV (itv.) On the program she says, “So, basically in eleven and a half months a person can go from making minimum wage to making on aver-

age $17-$20 an hour, even sometimes more in certain situations...[after some transitional classes] and in one more year you can become an R.N.” Bailey believes that the LVN program, and especially her program is very encompassing of the entire nursing field, “I think that the LVN level gives a really good foundation for nursing; it teaches them not only in theory, but also hands on.” “At Angelina our motto is ‘it’s a great place to start’ and I believe that the LVN program is a great place to start,” she said. As far as what the students go through in the program, “they truly give up a year of their lives” to finish the program’s entirety. Students arrive at the Jasper Teaching Center before most any other classes and leave after most are complete. Bailey said that her program is fully accredited by the BON with accommodations, “which means that we are at the highest level of accreditation with the BON that we can be.” She also said, “thus far in December I’ve See Nurse, Page 5C

graduated 34. In December we graduated nine, and so far I have a 100 percent pass rate on the state board, [the] NCLEX.” Bailey’s nursing students rotate through the local businesses, she said, “We rotate through Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital, Christus Jasper Clinic, Christus Kirbyville Clinic, Rayburn Health Clinic, Dr. Peter Bidwell M.D.’s office, Complete Healthcare, all Newton Family Clinics owned by Dr. Larry Brown, Shady Acres Nursing Home, New Century Dialysis, Jasper Newton Public Health District, WIC, JISD, and many surrounding school districts for school nurse rotations, Medicine Shoppe in Jasper and Woodville, S&R Pharmacy, Dr. Lynn Pearson, and Advantage Plus Homecare (Brenda Frazier is an Angelina College Graduate and huge supporter.)” She also wants people to know that, “they are rotated locally and 95 percent of my graduates work locally right here in Jasper and their working and taking care of other people, they’re not going to Lufkin and other places.” She also says that she’s heard a rumor ever since her nursing school days that LVNs will eventually be phased out but she assures everyone not to believe the hype, “LVNs are the ones generally with the patients more and are thought to think beyond…AC (Angelina College) teaches their students how to think critically at every level…LVNs are definitely employable I don’t have any that aren’t working, primarily in hospitals, nursing homes, and doctors’ offices; although many hospitals do not employ LVNs in specialty areas such as OB (Obstetrics) and emergency rooms,

there are some, however, that still do.” Bailey also admits that she still teaches traditionally, that she enjoys the availability of computers and information through the internet and other media, but she still uses a lot of what she considers “old school” methods in her teaching and still holds a traditional graduation ceremony commonly called a “pinning ceremony” where the new nurses wear traditional “whites” including old fashioned nursing gowns and hats in the way of Florence Nightingale. In December of last year, Mack Hall (a frequent Newsboy contributor) wrote an article entitled “A Light shines in Jasper” referring to Bailey’s nursing program and an obvious reference to Nightingale who was the first of nurses to check on patients at night using a shining lamp, earning her the nickname of “the lady of the lamp.” Hall’s article details, “over forty years ago a number of Jasper visionaries considered the needs and possibilities of health care in East Texas, and persuaded the people to vote the creation of a hospital district. Among the first fruits of this dream were Jasper Memorial Hospital and, shortly after, JMH’s state-sanctioned LVN school taught by my aunt, Rhoda Holmes, RN and definitely old school.” He also said, “Upon graduation, Jasper LVN candidates join for one last lesson, and that lesson is in faith and ethics in a traditional pinning and capping ceremony which originated with Florence Nightingale over 150 years ago.” Hall concludes with, “the founders of Jasper’s growing medical community are mostly gone

now, but they left a wonderful legacy. Jasper Memorial Hospital serves more people than ever, health care providers find the area a positive place for establishing their professional practices, Angelina College continues the excellence of the Jasper LVN program, and the Mary Dickerson will perhaps soon enjoy a renaissance in providing medical service…The Lady with the Lamp (who is just as likely to be the Gentleman) now carries a high-tech pocket flashlight and a palm computer on her night rounds, and the white uniform has been sacrificed temporarily for scrubs, but the professionalism, the skill, and the care remain forever…Those squeaky shoes a wakeful patient might hear walking the quiet hospital corridors at 0-dark-thirty – those aren’t really shoes, those are the wings of an angel.”

The entire hospital will remain operational throughout the project construction. The new expansion will face Marvin Hancock but entrance to the emergency room area from ambulances will change. With the new addition, the entrance area will come off of U.S. Hwy. 190. Durand said a whole new facelift would be seen to the front of the hospital including an entrance to the hospital. “When you enter the hospital now, you will signage that will point

Solid Foundations — New Beginnings

‘Caring with Pride’ Woodville Health and Rehab part of a family business that treats residents like family By JIMMY GALVAN Editor

When it comes to Woodville Health and Rehab, the slogan for the facility is simple — “living with dignity aging with understanding, caring with pride.” “It is a slogan that we are very proud of,” said Sammie Brown, director of marketing/admissions for Woodville Health and Rehab. “All of our employees have to go through an extensive training and the main point taught to you is the clients. “Our corporate offices are located in the Dallas area and they make it a point to make visits to all of the facilities and that helps keep us on our toes,” Brown said. Woodville Health and Rehab, located at 102 North Beech Street in Woodville, is a skilled nursing facility with short-term and long-term patients. The facility also sees a lot of patients who come in rehab assignments where they get physical and occupational therapy. Woodville Health and Rehab is a part of the Cantex Continuing Care Network, which represents a unified, seamless pathway of compassionate care and medical

excellence, aimed at complete recovery beginning the moment a patient is released from the hospital. The 98-bed facility offers semi-private rooms, an activity program with community outings, beauty and barber salons and housekeeping and laundry services. Clinical services offered include around-the-clock skilled nursing, pharmacy services, speech therapy, wound management, intravenous therapy, hospice and pallative care and respite care. “We make sure that our residents are always doing something,” Brown said. “Our residents do not just sit around. We go on at least two outings a month as well as we have churches that come in and provide services and Bible study. “We even have some

residents that stay up late and play dominoes,” Brown said. “They just don’t come in and sit around. They are a family within themselves.” Cantex’ integrated network of healthcare services includes transitional care, rehabilitation, chronic care, home health services, hospice and pharmacy, all centered on the patient. According to Brown, Cantex is a family-owned business that started in

Canada. The history of Cantex Amelia Longo retired from the nursing profession after the birth of her sixth child. A few years after retiring, her husband passed away. The Longo siblings decided to open up a nursing facility for Amelia Longo to serve as administrator and run the facility. Several facilities were opened in Canada before the company expanded its services to Texas. Eventually all the Canada sites were sold leaving only the Texas sites. The Woodville Health and Rehab facility is part of the East Texas umbrella which includes The Bradford at Brookside, Magnolia Manor, Oakwood Manor, Silsbee Convalescent Center and Stoneleigh Estates. Brown just started with the company recently and said she a firm believer in what the facility has to offer its patients and resi-

dents. “I have to really believe in it to be a part of it,” Brown said. “I had a chance to see how the employees dealt with the residents here before I was hired and I could tell there was a genuine love there. “It is really like a family and not like a nursing home at all,” Brown said. “I don’t even like calling it a nursing home. It’s a skilled nursing facility. Residents come here to get nursing around the clock. It is so much more than what people think it is.”

One of the biggest statements for Woodville Health Rehab comes in the form of referrals that are issued from local doctors. “We have actually had local doctor refer their own family members to us,” Brown said. “I think one of the reasons we get all the rehab referrals is because all of our rehab professionals have been with us for so long. “We give them that personal care that comes along with a small community,” Brown said. “It’s not just business, its personal.”

Local attorney becomes certified family law specialist

On February 17, 2012, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization announced that Scott W. Stover, of the Seale, Stover & Bisbey law firm in Jasper, received Board Certification in Family Law. “Family Law” includes: marriage, adoption, divorce, custody, support plus ownership of property acquired before and during marriage. Board Certification is a voluntary designation program certifying Texas attorneys in 21 specific areas of law. Board Certified attorneys must be licensed for at least five years, devote a required percentage of practice to a specialty area for at least three years, attend continuing education seminars, pass an evaluation by fellow lawyers and judges and pass a 6-hour written examination. “Board Certified attorneys have made a commitment to excellence to serve the justice system in Texas and to benefit individuals and institutions in Texas,” said Robert Valdez, Chairman of the TBLS Board of Directors. “They have dedicated their time to meeting all the requirements for initial certification and they have made an ongoing commitment to continue working and acquiring knowledge in their specialty area.” There are currently only 763 family law board certified attorneys in Texas. East Texas does not have many family law specialists. Stover practices primarily in Jasper, Hardin, Newton, Sabine, San Augustine and Tyler Counties. There are no other family law specialists with an office in any of these counties. Most are located in larger cities such as Lufkin where there are 2 and Beaumont where there

Seale Stover & Bisbey have board certifications in specific areas, they continue to practice in all areas of law. Stover has over 20 years of experience practicing business law, commercial litigation, probate law, and personal injury law, in addition to his family law specialization.

During my practice though, people continuously called and asked if I was a family law specialist. I would tell them that I didn’t have the specialization, but I had a lot of experience. After practicing for a little over 20 years I finally gave in and decided to take the exam. It was difficult. I was out of practice studying and I was working at the same time.” Stover added that being a member of a firm helped him through this process, ensuring that his caseload was never neglected, even while he was in Austin preparing for and taking the exam. “Now that I have passed, I can definitely say it was worth it,” said Stover. “I am

glad that I can offer the benefit of a board certified attorney to people in our area.” The Seale, Stover & Bisbey firm has a history of encouraging specialization certification by its attorneys. facility in this little town and be proud of it,” said Jasper Hospital District Chairman Charlie Nicholson. “That is what we had in mind. As old as it is, the appearance needs to be upgraded. “I think it will be something that the people of not only here but all of East Texas can be proud of,” Nicholson said. The Jasper Hospital District combined its resources with Christus Jasper Memorial on the $6.2 million dollar project. Tom McClurg, former executive director for the Jasper Economic Development Corporation and now working as a business consultant, said having top-notch medical facilities is a key component in attracting retirees to the region. “Medical growth is not only viable but it is necessary for both industry and communities,” McClurg said. “Having a good healthcare system is an attractive for to all parties. “Without the medical facilities, the community would be at a great disadvantage,” McClurg said. In Tyler County, the Tyler County Memorial Hospital continues to be a viable force in the area due to it being the main hospital for Tyler County. The closing of Dickerson Memorial Hospital only magnified

how hard it has become for rural hospitals to survive in the present economic climate. “It’s real tough right now in the medical field to be a stand alone hospital,” Nicholson said. In the recent history, Newton Memorial Hospital, Silsbee Memorial Hospital and Dickerson Memorial Hospital all closed its doors. “It’s just hard to do,” Nicholson said. “We are really successful here because Christus Jasper Memorial is a countywide hospital.” In the Lufkin area, Woodland Heights has used the demographics in the area make for a natural growth in the medical field in East Texas with its ability to stay on top of the latest medical technology. Jasper Hospital District board member Harold Kennedy pointed out that the Christus Jasper Memorial is utilized by people not only in Jasper County but also from all points in this area. “If you take Hwy. 190 and U.S. Hwy. 96 and put a pin right there and run a string out 15-20 miles, there is a population of 5060,000 in that area,” Nicholson said. “If you have one stand-alone hospital and you are the sole provider, then you can make it.”

Sustaining Our Future…. When you are a company whose business depends on – and directly impacts – the world’s resources, you have higher standards to reach. So what does sustainability mean to MeadWestvaco? In a word, everything. Solid Foundations — New Beginnings

Expanding services By JODIE WARNER Staff writer

Southeast Dental Center opens doors to comprehensive dental care

Southeast Dental Center recently opened in downtown Jasper. Owners and well-known local dentists Steven G. Spencer, D.D.S. and Jodi L. Kahla, D.D.S. have joined together to expand their practices and provide comprehensive dental care to Jasper and all of Southeast Texas. The new facility is approximately 3600 square feet with four operatories and two hygiene rooms offering a full range of dental services for pedatrics, geriatrics, and everyone in between. An in-house lab technician is available for fabrication of both full and partial dentures. There are two CEREC machines for on-site crown fabrication to enhance patient convience. The addition of digital x-ray to the practice not only provides patient safety thru reduced radiation, but also enhances diagnostic capabilities. Other dental services available at Southeast Texas

Dental Center include cleanings, restorations, whitening and cosmetic procedures, extractions and root canals. The staff is continuously friendly, helpful, and professional. DuGood DuPont Goodrich FCU celebrates 50 years of service

No matter who you are, staying in business for 50 years is a reason to celebrate… and DuPont Goodrich FCU (DuGood) is doing just that! In honor of its 50th anniversary, DuGood Credit Union is celebrating all year long with events, giveaways, and special offers. There is something happening every month. For detailed information, visit w w w. b e p a r t o f s o m e thinggood.org. DuGood first opened its doors in 1962. The credit union has grown from humble beginnings – operating out of a plant employee’s office at the DuPont Beaumont Chemical Works in Nederland – to serving over 30,000 members in Jefferson, Hardin, Orange, and Jasper counties. DuGood’s Senior Vice President, Lisa Baione attributes the credit union’s continued success to their philosophy of “people helping people.” “Our employees take social responsibility to a whole new level,” Baione said. “From helping people with disabilities, teaching financial education, to supporting community events… doing good really is at the heart of everything we do.” Recently, the credit union donated over $93,000 to members and 12 charities throughout Southeast Texas as part of

their DuGood By Giving campaign. Employees volunteered 2,230 hours during 2011. DuPont Goodrich is also passionate about empowering students. They teach free financial education at area schools, disbursed $6,850 in scholarships last year, and created a Student Advisory Council. The council consists of local high school and Lamar students who help the credit union engage and educate youth. Community involvement is the not the only way the credit union gives back. Baione added that DuGood is deeply devoted to its membership. “We consider it a privilege to serve our members. We understand they have many financial institutions to choose from, and we appreciate their loyalty,” Baione said. One of the ways the credit union serves members is by keeping their products and services

either free or low cost. At DuGood, there is no monthly fee for maintaining a checking account. Plus, they offer paid dividends, debit cards with rewards and no ATM fees, and free ID theft protection. Currently, the credit union has nine locations throughout Southeast Texas. However, account access is not limited to this area. Members can take care of their finances all over the nation through DuPont Goodrich’s Shared Branching network. They can also connect to the credit union through DuGood’s technology services. With features like their free Mobile App, Text Banking, Secure Messaging, Live Chat, Account Alerts, and more; members can manage their money no matter their location. Baione emphasizes that DuPont Goodrich is a full service financial institution. What does

that mean? Those seeking mortgage, home equity, business loans, savings accounts, or investment opportunities can all be taken care of at DuGood. She added that now is the prime time to visit the credit union for those interested in financing an auto or home loan. During the spring and summer months, DuGood will offer $150 cash back, discounted rates, plus the chance to win a brand new Chevy, Ford, or Ram truck from Truckville dealers in Sour Lake. The winner will be announced on the credit union’s official birth date, July 27.
