Annual Castalia Tractor Day to be held Sunday Three candidates vying for Allamakee County Supervisor

The 19th Annual Castalia Tractor Day will be held this Sunday, June 12. The day will begin with an ecumenical church service at 9 a.m. at the Castalia City Park. Those who plan to attend are asked to bring their own lawn chairs. The parade is slated to begin at noon and all participants are asked to line up at 11 a.m. All entries are welcome. Along with tractors, floats, horses, cars, walking units are encouraged to join the parade. Grand marshals for this year’s event are Leonard and Jean Schutte. The featured tractor is a 1967 Minneapolis Moline Jet Star 3 Super which is owned by Tim Hageman. The tractor was bought new by Hageman’s grandfather, Lloyd Monroe from the Krysen Implement Company in Cresco. Tim said, “The tractor was used as one of the main tractors on the farm up until the mid-90s when much bigger equipment took over.” The tractor came from the factory with clamshell fenders that were replaced by David Brown fenders that had lights and even sturdy enough for a rider in need of a lift to the next field. The tractor does not have a three-point hitch as it was not available on this particular model. The engine was overhauled in later years, but Tim noted, “The tractor sat in the back of the shed after the Molineland Museum was sold in 2004.” He continued, “I was as shocked as a Publisher’s Clearing House winner when my uncle Kale Monroe gave me the tractor. I then decided it was only fitting to restore the tractor.” Once Tim began to dig into the project, he noted that Kale reached out a helping

Tim said, “Kale, along with my cousins, AJ and Andrew worked on the frame and engine of the tractor in the shop while Rick Shimek painted the sheet metal separately in his shop.”

He concluded by saying, “Everything had a way of falling into place when everyone pitched in.” After the parade a wide-array of activities will take place in the park. Those activities include: Food by the Bloomfield 4-H groups and shakes by the Moo Mobile; 1-3 p.m. Kids games including Balloon Twister.

Schager compiling data for Ludlow and Post townships Family farms, especially the farmstead barn, have become more and more rare in the last several decades thus making the documentation and preservation of those still in existence very important to American history. It is for this very reason that a committee is working very hard to record the history of barns in our area. The exceedingly prosperous decade of the 1990’s and the subsequent years following have witnessed an explosive growth of suburban and exurban development to

many parts of America. Subdivisions, shopping centers and golf courses are leap frogging far into the countryside, extending the rural-urban fringe beyond anything heretofore experienced in the nation. The loss of farms and their barns is a nationwide occurrence. The traditional family farm with its farmstead consisting of dwelling, one or more barns and outbuilding is at risk. The landscape images we associate with the traditional family farm in rural America, especially rural Iowa, were largely

forged in the 19th century. Paramount in this bucolic imagery is the barn. Typical was the one-story-with-loft, three bay New England threshing barn. In the 19th century increasing farm productivity associated with evolving farm mechanization encouraged the building of much larger barns. The 19th century became America’s great era of barn building. As agricultural land was largely developed by the 20th century, the great era

Burke: Having served on the Board of Supervisors for 12 years and having the knowledge of how county government works. I have always had an interest in county government. If elected, what would be your issue of highest priority and how would you use your position to address that issue? Hager: If elected, the first thing I would like to get done is what Cloy, Larry and Sherry were trying to get started, easing up on all the restrictions that were placed on our land owners and developers. I want to be supportive of responsible developing, as it brings new people in, lowers the tax burden we all face, and creates jobs. So, I encourage everyone to get out to vote June 14. This is an important election for the future of Allamakee County. If

Zieman: I’m sure I don’t know all the issues, but protecting an individual’s property rights will be near the top. As county officials, we need to continue to search out efficiencies that will make county government more effective. Budget time will roll around very quickly. Burke: There are many facets of county government with high priority, including keeping the County fiscally sound. The County's Comprehensive Plan is due for an update, and this is what zoning is based on. A county with good zoning has increased land values, and in this we need to visit smaller lot sizes. Public mental health and how we get committals done is always an ongoing battle for the County. In the summer of 2010, I went to Cedar Rapids with the county treasurer and county attorney to Federal Bankruptcy Court

Hager: The people of Allamakee County hold a very special place in my heart, they changed my life and the way I live it in 1995. I was 20 years old and had a very rare illness and went into renal failure. I then lost all kidney function and went on dialysis for six months before receiving a kidney transplant from my cousin, Jef White, who was killed in a car accident. The Lord works in mysterious ways. I was overwhelmed by the prayers, love and support myself and my whole family received from this great community of Allamakee County. I love living here and want more opportunities for young people to live in northeast Iowa. I was approached by a group of people who I have great respect for and was encouraged to run. I respected Cloy Kuhse very much and thought he was doing an excellent job as Supervisor.

Society Foster to celebrate 85th

Faces of Postville Anab Abu

Jim Foster will celebrate his 85th birthday Wednesday, June 8. In honor of the occasion his family is hosting a card shower.

Anab Abu was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. When she was about for the Herald 6 years old she moved to Ethiopia and maybe Chad, she can’t remember very well since she was still quite young. She lived there for a few years and then moved to Kenya. She lived in Kenya for 9 years, and did most of her growing up there. As a child she loved going to the beach in Mombasa and watching the tourists from all over the world. She also enjoyed swimming and visiting the animals at the zoo. Her favorite animals are the elephants and lions. She remembers that you could walk right up to the lions and they would not eat you! That is an amazing memory for her. In 2007 she moved to the United States, living with an aunt in Minnesota. When she was living in Kenya, people who had come to live in the United States would call her and tell her that there is money everywhere in the U.S. They told her that you could find many dollar bills just laying in the streets because people had so much money they would just leave it laying around. However, when she got to Minnesota she did not see any money in the streets. In fact, her aunt made her go to high school and would not let her work. Anab attended high school for 8 months, but spent the whole time networking with other students and teachers trying to find work. She says that she came to this country to get money and did not want to do anything else. Finally a friend told her there was work in Kansas at a meat packing facility. When she asked her aunt if she could go, she said “No way. No work for you. You go to school.” She then tried convincing a brother in Chicago who gave her the same answer. Since Anab is very strong-willed, she waited until her aunt was attending a wedding. She packed a bag of clothes, went to the bus station, bought her ticket, and went to Kansas without even leaving a note. Since she did not yet speak English, Anab did not know what to do when she got to Kansas. After making many hand signals and saying “car” over and over she got a gas station attendant to help her call a taxi. She asked the taxi driver to take her to the meat packing plant. When she was given a job application, the only thing she knew how to write was her name and social security number. The lady at the desk looked at her empty job application and said “No way!” Fortunately she was able to find another Somali lady at the plant that helped her fill out the rest of the application and she was hired to begin working the next day. She then asked the taxi driver to take her to a motel. She only had $200 in her pocket to pay the taxi, hotel and get some food. When the taxi driver took her to a Somali restaurant, she was surprised to see her uncle standing right in front of the window! She did not know that her uncle lived in that town. When she entered the restaurant she saw her best friend from Kenya sitting there. Kansas started to look like a good place to be. A few months later she got laid off and later the plant closed. So she returned to Minnesota with her aunt. She spent a short time living in Colorado caring for the children of another family member, and then in July of 2010 she made her way to Postville to work at AgriStar. She likes living in Postville and hopes she can stay here for a while. She really likes all the trees that make our community beautiful, especially when they are blooming in early spring.

The Allamakee County Fair Board is seeking applicants for the 2011 Allamakee County Fair Queen contest, with this year's fair running July 2024. The contest will run similarly to that of the Iowa State Fair Queen Contest. Each girl will dress appropriately and either give a presentation on highlights of her Allamakee County Fair experience or perform a talent, in addition to being involved in various events sponsored by the Fair Board. There will be one formal interview conducted by judges. This is where the majority of the judging will take place. New to the contest this year, the winner will be announced Tuesday night, July 19 in a standalone pageant event being held at the Pavilion building on the Allamakee County Fairgrounds. The winner

will receive her Fair Queen Crown at this event, and the runner-up winner will be named Allamakee County Fair Princess. All candidates will be part of the Allamakee County Fair Royalty Team that will preside over the remaining events at the fair. Additional entertainment at the Fair Queen pageant will include a Power Point presentation by Allamakee County 4-H'ers involved in the Citizenship Club trip to Washington, D.C. earlier this year, as well as some Share the Fun presentations by Allamakee County 4-H members. Anyone interested in competing for Fair Queen should detach the entry form accompanying this article and send it to the address listed at the bottom of the form by July 1. The first eight individuals to return their entry forms will be candidates this year, with

Mr. Burke has many years experience as a County Supervisor. He has been part of “Zone(ing) Wars and knows how we got to where we are. I believe his challenge is working with the new board members. Mutual respect and support on a three person board is critical. One member’s experience is of no benefit if the board can’t function. Mr. Hager got the required nomination signatures in the short time allowed. He is younger. He will presumably have to live longer with the results of the board’s actions. The Waukon City Council is important government management experience. I believe his challenge will be to show he can think beyond the needs of Waukon in a county that really needs broader representation. Mr. Zieman’s state legislative background could potentially be of great benefit to the county. I believe his challenge is establishing trust. Part of this is because he has been on the other side of the system that tells counties what new things they have to do but does not supply the funds to do them.

I’ve decided to submit my name as a write-in candidate for Allamakee County Supervisor. I am a moderate. I have watched the county board operate since we moved here in 1996. I have a quarter century of county budgeting, personnel, contracting, and program evaluation experience in Minnesota. I believe a couple of things regarding this election: 1. No person, party, organization or vendor has a preferred right to representation on the board or business from the board. 2. If salary or retirement benefits are a primary reason for running, anything that threatens those won’t be considered, even if it might be better for the county. Example - reducing supervisor pay/expenses to add supervisor representation without adding costs. I would welcome the opportunity to work with the new supervisors, the department heads, and the staff to strengthen our county services. I will listen. Area Pancreatic Cancer, your call makes a difference Postville’s Kim Wettleson to train in Washington, D. C.

Although pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death the National Cancer Institute allots a mere two percent of its budget to pancreatic cancer research. There are no early diagnostic tools and there is no cure. Seventy-five percent of patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within one year while only six percent of patients survive for five years. These statistics have remained the same for the past 40 years! Would you like to help change these statistics? Postville High School graduate Kim Wettleson, who has been employed at Mayo Clinic for 31 years, is an advocate for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (www.pancan.org), the national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support,

community outreach and advocacy for a cure. Her mother, Wanda Kay Wettleson, her uncle, Lee Breitsprecher, and her great uncle, Reuben Svendsen, have all died of pancreatic cancer. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will be holding the Fifth Annual Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. Monday and Tuesday, June 13 and 14. Wettleson and Dr. Gloria Petersen from Rochester, along with six advocates from the Twin Cities will be representing Minnesota. Dr. Petersen has studied pancreatic cancer for 16 years. She leads the Mayo Clinic Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in pancreatic cancer. Wettleson is an advocate for this SPORE. Monday, June 13, nearly 600 people from the United States will receive

training from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in Washington D.C. The following day they will go to Capitol Hill and meet with their members of Congress in order to educate them about pancreatic cancer. They will emphasize the urgent need for federal pancreatic cancer research funding and ask them to co-sponsor the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act (S. 362/ H.R. 733) to spur true progress in fighting the disease. You can become involved by calling your elected officials in the Senate and House of Representatives and ask for their support the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act. The National Call-In day is June 14. To learn more about the National Call-In visit www. knowitfightitendit.org.

Barns Continued from Page 2... of barn building gradually receded. The currents of history, whether from economic constraints, the lower cost of pole barns or urban expansion, are forcing change upon the agricultural sector. Preservationists know that not all buildings of historic merit can be saved, particularly vernacular buildings like farm houses and barns. So, we fight to save as many representative examples in their original form so that present and future generations can visually experience these buildings and the ways they represent. We also seek out appropriate forms of adaptive use. Finally, when all other forms of preservation fail, we practice mitigation. Mitigation consists of surveying and documenting buildings in order to preserve a record of their existence and their visual character. Surveying and documenting can also serve purposes other than mitigation. The first step in preserving the environment is finding out what we have. To preserve buildings and to evaluate the historical significance of those buildings requires a database upon which to develop comparative evaluative criteria. The National Farm Survey, produced by the National Trust for Historic preservation: BARN AGAIN! and the National Barn Alliance, has been created. It outlines common survey criteria and a method of survey that can be used by a variety of Americans using grass roots efforts to accomplish the goal. The survey data can then be compiled at the State Historical Preservation Office and shared nationwide to help establish a picture of the number and conditions of American’s historic agricultural architecture. To accomplish this goal in our area, a Historical Preservation Commission has been established. The seven member committee will be survey barns in 16 townships. Locally, Fran Schager will be contacting area residents with barns in Ludlow and Post Townships. The deadline to complete the data processing is October 1, 2011. Once the data is compiled it will be compiled into a book and housed in the Allamakee County Museum. Along with compiling data about each structure, Schager will also take photos of each barn.. Whether submitting information about your barn by mail, email or in person, there is specific data that is requested. Information

requested includes roof shapes, type of roof material, history of the area and more. Other things that will be surveyed are conditions of each building, the architectural features, paint color, siding, windows, number of dormers and any interesting or unusual features about the building. Schager is encouraging

residents of Ludlow and Post Townships to give her a call so they can complete the survey. She will, however, make every effort to visit with every barn owner in these two townships. Schager, who is anxious to see the history of our area barns preserved, may be reached at (563) 864-7489 or (563) 880-1010.

Letter to Allamakee Citizens Lennie Burke: “I ask for your Vote on June 14”

On June 14, Allamakee citizens will go to the polls to elect a county supervisor. Experience as a supervisor is vital. You need someone who can step right in, go to work for the people and do the job. I’m not good at blowing my own horn, but I believe my record demonstrates that I am that person. I was your

supervisor for 12 years, balanced 12 county budgets and have a good knowledge of the needs of this county and how to provide services in a cost effective way. I would like to serve you again, and I am asking for your vote on June 14. Lennie Burke

ave you ever noticed that the raise in pay which thrilled you beyond measure when first received begins to go flat after a couple of weeks or months? After a few months, you are not discernibly happier with the increase in pay than you were before. Likewise, new pleasures soon become humdrum, as we adapt or "habituate" to them. Psychologists call this adaptation with regard to pleasures the "hedonic treadmill." One way to avoid this is to seek variety. Very few of us want to eat our favorite food three times a day, and if we want to continue enjoying it, it probably makes sense to limit how often we have it. Lifelong hobbies will continue to give pleasure if we vary them in some way, perhaps learning new and better techniques which are relevant to the hobby. Music, literature, and the arts are wonderful sources of pleasure, but no one wants to hear the same song over and over again. Variety is truly the spice of life. Consider how rich the world is with tastes and sounds and sights just waiting to be savored.

Sports Pirate Baseball takes two double-header losses Kassidy Cook Herald Sports

vs. Kee...

The Pirates hosted the Kee Hawks Tuesday, May 31 to kick off conference play for the season. Game one did not go well at all for the Pirates, as the Kee Hawks put the ball in play and scored several runs. With a strong wind blowing to right-center field, Kee hit back-to-back-toback homeruns to extend their lead. Unfortunately, the Pirates could never get their bats going and were able to only score one run. The game came to an end after the fifth inning with the Pirates losing 30-1. Game two was a bit better, but the Pirates could

not fully recover from game one. Postville managed to put more runners on base and score some runs. Unfortunately, Kee’s hitting did not slow down either. Capitalizing on solid hits and Pirate errors, the Hawks scored eighteen runs in the game. With the ten-run rule in effect, the game came to an end in the sixth inning with the final score 18-5. vs Ed-Co...

The Pirates traveled to Ed-Co Thursday, June 2 for a non-conference double header. Game one was a continuation of the troubles from two days prior. Zach Steffans started on the mound for the Pirates and threw a lot of strikes. Unfortunately, Ed-Co put the bat on the ball and managed to create opportunities. Ed-Co scored often while the Pirates only managed two hits in the game. With the score 14-0, the first game came to a close. Game two was a slight improvement over game one, but it was still a tough game. While the Pirates only recorded three hits in the game, they managed to put three runs on the board. Pitcher Dallas Imoehl threw strikes, but like the first game, Ed-Co put the ball in play and scored numerous runs. This game came to an early end as well with the score 14-3. First week leaves Valley-Postville softball embattled Lady Tigers score a single win out of nine games in tough week

Kassidy Cook Herald Sports

vs Turkey Valley...

The Valley-Postville Tigers began their season against Turkey Valley Tuesday, May 31. The first game did not begin well. While pitcher Shanna Wettleson threw strikes, the Tiger defense was jittery. Turkey Valley took advantage of four Tiger errors and managed to score six runs in the first inning. The Tigers tried to put together a comeback in the fifth inning by scoring four runs, but they were unable to continue scoring in the remaining innings. The Tigers lost game one 9-5. Game two started out much differently than the first game. In inning one with the bases loaded, Rachael Strong found her pitch and sent it over the fence for the first grand slam of the season. The Tigers were able to add another run that inning and a run in the second and third innings to lead 7-2 going into the fourth inning. Unfortunately, their bats went cold, and the Tigers were unable to score any more runs. This was not the case for Turkey Valley, though, as they managed to score two runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh inning to bring the Tigers their second loss. The score of the game was 8-7. “Shanna Wettleson threw a good game [in game one], but our defense was not behind her,” head coach Jess Dean commented. “Mariah

Mostaert threw the second game and did a great job of throwing strikes and forcing them to put the ball in play. We were unable to put any hits together in the latter innings, and that was the difference in the ball game. We could tell that this was our first night out; about the fifth inning we could see our girls start to lose focus and not swing at good pitches.”

for base hits and capitalize on our errors. Sumner-Fred is a defensively sound team. They make all the routine plays, and they do a great job of executing on offense to manufacture runs.”

vs Sumner-Fred...

In the first home game of the year, the Tigers took on the Sumner-Fred Cougars Thursday, June 2. With Kim Kleve doing a nice job pitching, the Tigers kept the first game close. Slowly but surely, though, the Cougars began to take advantage of errors. Scoring four runs in the final three innings, the Cougars handed the Tigers a 6-2 loss in game one. Game two was a low scoring affair as pitcher Kim Kleve once again kept the Cougars’ bats guessing. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Lexi Frieden crossed home plate. They would hold that lead until the final two innings, when the Cougars managed to score two runs. That was all it took, and the Tigers ended the night with a 2-1 loss in game two. After the games, Dean said, “These were pretty good games for us. We made most plays and were able to score some runs. They were able to beat some bunts out

“We were unable to have a good game defensively against Kee, and that carried over to the next game against Ed-Co,” head coach Mike Minikwu said about this week. “We struggled in the field. I told the kids to put this week behind them, as we still have a long season ahead of us, in order to continue to improve. If we do that, we will be right where we want to be at the end of the season.”

vs Jesup...

The Tigers participated in the North Fayette Tournament Friday and faced off against Jesup in their first game. Jesup struck first in the bottom of the third inning with four runs. The Tigers fought back, though, and came up with four runs of their own in the fifth inning to tie the game. Unfortunately, “Too many errors again were the difference in this ball game, according to Dean, and Jesup managed to add the winning run in the sixth inning to beat the Tigers 5-4.

vs Starmont...

While the varsity reserve and JV teams traveled to North Fayette to finish up that tournament, the varsity girls hosted the annual Postville tournament on Saturday. In the first game the girls faced off against Starmont. After the third inning the Tigers trailed 7-2. Determined to get the first win of the season, the girls battled back in the remaining innings to take a two run lead heading into the final inning. Starmont did not give up, though, and scored two runs to tie the game at nine. In the bottom of the inning Lexi Frieden came up big, smashing a triple to put her in position

for the game winning run. Jodi Schott would do her part at the plate as well as she hit a single that allowed Frieden to score, giving the Tigers their first win of the season, 10-9.
