Snow Doughnuts! Natural oddity North of Postville

To form one of these natural oddities: • The ground must be covered by a layer of ice to which snow will not stick. • The layer of ice must be covered by wet, loose snow with a temperature near the melting point of ice. • The wind must be strong

These doughnut-shaped mounds of snow were spotted by Postville resident Judy Egeland north of Postville on Yellow River Road last week. When Herald employees Paula Enyart and Nadine Kruse drove out to the location, they spotted several of the phenomenon in various stages along the hill. A snow doughnut, or snow roller, is defined as a rare meteorological phenomenon in which large snow balls are formed naturally as chunks of snow are blown along the ground by wind, picking up material along the way, in much the same way that the large snowballs used in snowmen are made. Unlike snowmen made by people, snow rollers are typically cylindrical in shape, and are often hollow since the inner layers, which are the first layers to form, are weak and thin compared to the outer layers and can easily be blown away, leaving what looks like a doughnut or Swiss Roll. Snow rollers, including those seen here, are as large as two feet in diameter.

enough to move the snow rollers, but not strong enough to blow them too fast. Alternatively, gravity can move the snow rollers as when a snowball, such as those that will fall from a tree or cliff, lands on a steep hill and begins to roll down the hill. Because of this last condition, snow rollers are more common in hilly regions. However, the precise nature of the conditions required make them very rare.

City Council begins Budget Workshops DOT to place ‘Scenic Byway’ signage in Postville Prior to meeting for a budget work session, the Postville City Council had an abbreviated agenda at its regular meeting Monday evening, January 10. Dave Day, manager of Hall Roberts’ Son, asked that a curb cut be allowed at the home of one of his employees, Kevin Schultz who resides at 259 W. Post. Schultz, who is currently confined to a wheel chair following surgery, needs the curb cut so he can get to work. The Council agreed to the cut, although all work may not be completed until the weather is more favorable. A request to install a child level sink in the toddler room

at Postville Child Care Center was also approved. Director Katie Hageman explained that the Center received a donation to pay for the sink which will allow the children to reach the sink and wash their own hands without having to be lifted up by a teacher or child care provider. Mark Seegmiller of the street department presented a request for attachment forks for the CAT loader. He explained the attachment would be used to move pallets and pipes. The purchase from Star Equipment, LTD at a cost of $3,030 was approved. The land swap agreement between the City of Postville and Bruenings was discussed. It was noted that Bruening

has been renting out the 3.9 acres that belong to the City and needs to reimburse the rent. The matter was tabled until the rental cost can be more accurately calculated. In other action the Council: • approved a pre-treatment amendment with IL/ Norplex-Micarta. • approved a signage agreement with the DOT for the Scenic Byway. Most of the signage will be on Lybrand Street with the DOT doing all the maintenance. This project, Clerk Darcy Radloff said, is fully funded by the DOT. • reappointed Kevin Cronk as City Treasurer.

Allamakee Supervisors recognize January as Mentoring Month Supervisors meet with many board and organizations during busy Monday schedule

Bob Beach The Standard During its regular meeting Monday, January 10, the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors signed a proclamation recognizing January as National Mentoring Month. Kathy Schwartzhoff of Helping Services for Northeast Iowa said that there are many children in northeast Iowa, most between the ages of eight and 11, who are on the waiting list for a mentor and that some have been waiting for over a year. In signing the proclamation, the Board agreed that mentors are needed and valued and called upon citizens, businesses, churches and oth-

er local organizations to help recruit mentors. Dave Runyon, Executive Director of Helping Services of Northeast Iowa, told the Board that in addition to its mentoring program, Helping Services provides a variety of social services, including programs for substance abuse prevention and services for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. The Board approved Runyon’s funding request of $1,500 to help pay for programs benefiting victims of domestic violence. The Board met with representatives of each of the public libraries located within the county, who asked the Board for continued financial support.

Allamakee County Deputy Auditor Chris Gavin explained that property tax funding to support the libraries within the county is currently levied at the maximum allowed by State law and that the County provides an additional $14,000 in funding annually. All of those funds are divided among the six libraries, beginning with $3,500 to each library and the remaining funds divided on a per capita basis. Allamakee County Economic Development Executive Director Laura Olson presented the Board with a resolution to continue the County’s Revolving Loan Fund, which provides lowinterest loans to both new and expanding businesses.

Olson explained that three-year loans of up to $40,000 are offered at an interest rate one percent above the three-year Treasury bond rate. She said the number of jobs created by the prospective new or expanding business generally determines the loan amount offered - about $5,000 per job created. Olson also asked the Board for its continued support of the Northeast Iowa Regional Housing Trust Fund, which provides loans and grants to low- to moderate-income families and individuals for repairs to their homes. She explained that the project is funded by a $237,000 grant from the Iowa Housing Authority and requires a $56,000 match in funds from participating counties.

The Board agreed to contribute $10,000 towards the matching funds for fiscal year 2011-12. During public comment time, Doug Mullen of Lansing asked the Board to consider delaying all appointments and reappointments to boards and commissions until it had determined a policy regarding such appointments. Mullen suggested that all vacancies on boards and commissions should be advertised for two weeks and all applications be considered before appointments are made.

Graduating from Cedar Rapids Barber College December 31, 1960, Postville’s own Rodney Livingood recently celebrated his 50th year in barbering. After graduation, Livingood, the son of Sidney and Ruth Livingood, who grew up near Livingood Springs, returned to Postville to work under Bart McGonigle in the building where Sandie’s Hair Design is now located. Later, Rodney bought the building and had his barber shop there until he purchased his present location on Greene Street.

For many years the Livingoods also operated the Corner Clothier on the corner of Greene and Lawler. Rodney and his wife, Carolyn are the parents of Robin, Mathew (who is deceased), Andrew and Paula. The Livingood’s also have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rodney says he plans to continue barbering in between vacations.

The Postville School Board received the audit report at its meeting Monday evening, January 10. Auditor Keith Oltragge explained that although the district overspent in some areas, they were within the boundaries set by the State. Sarah Lehman, School Improvement Facilitator, presenting to the Board, noted that professional development and collaboration in the district has gone well, although faculty members have indicated more work is needed to be done. The Title I stimulus money used to fund the After School Program is no longer available. Recently, however, the 21st Century Learning Communities Grand was released to fund the program. Should the District receive the grant, it would fund the program for up to five years. Community members are reminded of the meeting tonight (Wednesday) concerning activity participation. The meeting will be held in the YMCA community room at 7 p.m.

Shoo away the wintertime blahs with these recipes

Fran Schager for the Herald

The winter time blahs are probably starting to get to everyone with all the snow and cold weather we have had so far. The one good thing is that we have had sunshine. The sun just seems to make things better for us and help us get through each day. I try to do one new thing each day even if it is putting away something or moving something around or maybe cooking or baking something new. Talk about comfort food. After this meal, you will be ready for your long winter’s nap! Ham and Pea Casserole One and a half cups cut bite sized pieces of baked ham Two cups corn bread cut into small pieces One cup peas (canned or frozen) One teaspoon chopped thyme Two cups milk Three eggs lightly beaten

Salt

Salt and pepper One fourth cup Olive Oil One 10 ounce package mixed lettuce

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly butter a 2.5 quart baking dish. In bowl toss the ham, corn bread, peas and thyme and transfer to baking dish. In the same bowl, beat together the milk, eggs and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Pour into baking dish. Let stand for 15 minutes. Bake until the custard is just set in the center, 40 to 45 minutes. Let stand five minutes before serving. Serve with a green salad. In my house not many like tuna, but here is something different but, oh, so good.

In large bowl combine tuna, bread crumbs, olives, raisins, egg, onion and cumin’ season with salt and pepper. Form into four patties. In large skillet heat two tablespoons olive oil on medium heat. Add the patties and cook, turning once, until golden, about eight minutes. In large bowl whisk together the remaining two tablespoons olive oil and the olive juice. Season with salt and pepper. Add lettuce and toss to coat. Serve the tuna cakes on the salad. Here is something sweet but light.

Spanish-Style Tuna Cakes Two five ounce cans of tuna, drained One half cups Italian bread crumbs One third cup chopped pimento stuffed olives, one tablespoon olive juice reserved One fourth cup raisins or cran-raisins One egg beaten Two tablespoons finely chopped onion One teaspoon ground cumin

Best Blondies One cup butter Two cups brown sugar, packed Two eggs, beaten Two teaspoons vanilla extract Two cups flour One half teaspoon baking powder One fourth teaspoon salt

One cup chopped pecans One cup white chocolate chips Three fourths cup toffee or caramel baking bits Line a 9 x 13 baking ban with parchment paper. Spray sides of pan with cooking spray. In large bowl mix butter and brown sugar. Beat in eggs and vanilla until mixture is smooth. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt, mix in pecans, chocolate chips and baking bits. Pour into pan and spread evenly. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes or until set in the middle. Cool before cutting into squares. You can top with ice cream and caramel sauce if you like. I’ve learned that when the light turns green, you had better look both ways before proceeding.

I have been with Teresa for almost seven years and knew how special the moment I proposed would be. I headed over to Elliott’s a few days before I wanted to propose. An extremely helpful employee immediately greeted me and I told her what I was looking for. There was a huge variety, but she made it so easy. I chose the setting, cut and size with her help and was able to leave the store with the ring in a very short time. They helped me find a special ring for my special someone. I don’t think there is any other place to buy a ring besides Elliott’s.

Pat McTaggart Area Correspondent At a Wednesday, January 5 reorganization meeting of the Clayton County Board of Supervisors, Board members re-elected Larry Gibbs as Chairman of the Board Gibbs has been on the Board for seven yearsNewly elected Supervisor Gary Bowden was elected vice-chairman. The Supervisors voted to retain the current mileage rate of 32 cents per mile for county employees. In recommending the retention, Supervisor Gibbs said the mileage rate could be raised to around 50 cents, but since the Supervisors were the biggest beneficiary of mileage costs in the county, it would not be fair for them to be making money off an increase. Both Bowden and newly elected Ron McCartney agreed, and the measure passed unanimously.

TREATING SEASONAL DEPRESSION

It is estimated that up to ten percent of the U.S. population, the majority of whom are women, suffer from seasonal depression. This condition, which occurs at about the same time each year (usually November through March), is known as “Seasonal Affective Disorder” (SAD). While the first-line treatment for SAD usually consists of daily exposure to artificial bright light, known as “light therapy,” at least one study shows that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is even more effective. CBT involves replacing negative thought patterns with more positive thoughts that will lead to healthier behaviors. In this case, by learning better ways to think about winter, those affected by SAD can cope with winter in new ways. Do the shortening days and cooling temperatures have you feeling down? Do you think you may have SAD? If so, call Northeast Iowa Behavioral Health, Inc. to schedule an initial appointment. Our compassionate counselors offer a safe space and a sympathetic ear, as well as providing a variety of techniques to help you through the long dark winter months. In addition to SAD, we can also help with depression, stress, and anxiety. Call our 24-hour line at 1-800-400-8923 any time you need our help. Our address is 905 Montgomery Street, Decorah, and 36 S. Frederick St., Oelwein. P.S. Many of those affected with seasonal affective disorder find they cannot maintain the regimen of sitting in front of a light box (light therapy) every day for 30-45 minutes throughout the winter.

The Board’s agenda for the day included the reappointment of Gary Soper to a five-year term on the County Conservation Board, a position that Mullen described as “controversial.” Allamakee County Conservation Director Jim Janett said that the County Conservation Board has always had strong retention of its members, but when members have been unwilling to serve another term, the opening has been advertised. He added that Mullen “has particular interest in some issues before the Conservation Board but he won’t talk to me or any of my board members.” Janett said that Soper was a founding member of the Conservation Board and has volunteered his service for more than 20 years, showing “unsurpassed dedication to the County.” The Board thanked Janett for his input and voted unanimously to reappoint Soper to the County Conservation Board. The Board also met with Mary Ann Humpal and David Boss of Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC), who presented a funding request for next fiscal year. NEICAC administers a number of community programs, such as emergency utility assistance, public transit (primarily for the elderly and disabled), family planning services, child care food programs, housing weatherization programs and other programs that benefit those in need. The total funding request presented was $80,500, although the County has contributed only $4,000 annually in recent years. The Board agreed to con-

sider the request during upcoming budget discussions. Allamakee County Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman John Smola briefed the Board on the work of the Commission. Smola described the Planning and Zoning Commission as a non-partisan entity that exists to protect the health, safety and welfare of county residents. The tools used to that end, he explained, are the Comprehensive Plan (developed in 2001-2002 and in the process of being updated), the County’s zoning ordinance and subdivision regulations and the Iowa Land Use Planning Notebook. He added that density of residential development is one of the concerns of the Commission, particularly as it relates to protecting water

quality. In other business, the Board approved transfer of $9,036.33 from the Rural Basic Fund and $129,320.59 from the Rural Services Fund to the Secondary Roads Fund. The Board also reappointed Laurie Moody as the County Weed Commissioner, accepted the lone bid of $200 from Jeff Swartz for used law books from the County’s law library, approved a construction evaluation resolution regarding confined animal feeding operations, accepted and placed on file the Veterans Affairs quarterly report, and granted its voting rights in the Northeast Iowa Response Group to Allamakee County Emergency Management Director Chris Dahlstrom.

ton County Register were named as the county’s three official newspapers for legal notices, minutes and other official county documents. That information will also be posted on the Clayton County official website (www.claytoncountyia.gov) During the approval of official newspapers, the Supervisors discussed limiting next year’s official paper to one after the website starts running all official notices, minutes, etc... in order to save money on printing costs. The official newspaper would then be redesignated each year on a rotating basis Further discussion concerning official designations will take place at the reorganization meeting next year.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is There are many ways to “put your money where your mouth is.” Two that might be combined are to establish a curse jar where we have to pay money every time we utter a curse or swear word and to give the proceeds from the curse jar to charities which do work that we believe in. If our speech is littered with expletives and needs some cleaning up, the curse jar might just work for us. We should be sure the fine for cursing is enough to hurt; loose pocket change might not be enough of a punishment to extinguish the bad behavior whereas dollar bills might. At the end of every month, we can give the money in the jar to our favorite charity. Once we have our swearing under control, consider keeping the jar around but changing it from a curse jar to a gossip jar, a lying jar, or an unkind word jar. The goal is to clean up our speech, and once we’ve mastered our tongue, which is unlikely, we can move on to our thoughts. Are we honest enough to put a dollar in the jar every time we curse inwardly?

Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion, that it may impart grace to those who hear. R.S.V. Ephesians 4:29

Pirates host Decorah, travel to Maynard tp face the Blue Devils 43-35 loss at home leads to 57-21 victory on the road

Chad Drahn Herald Sports

vs. Decorah...

Monday, January 3, the Pirate boys hosted Decorah in a non conference matchup. Although the Pirates played even with the Vikings through three quarters, the came up short and lost by eight as the final score was 35 to 43. “We started out well against Decorah,” noted Coach Mike Sass. “I think it was close to even after the first quarter.” Leading scorer for the Pirates was Dillon Schlee with 17. Schlee hit three from beyond the arc and also made three field goals and was two for two from the free throw line. The Coach said, “Dillon did a decent job of scoring for us. As always, we need him to do more and help set other guys up as well. But, with Decorah’s man-to-man, run and jump press, they did a nice job of taking it out of his hands and forcing other guys to handle the ball more.” Dallas Imoehl was also in double figures with ten. He made four field goals and was a perfect two for two from the free-throw line. Nick Wedo, Justin Kruckenberg, Zach Steffans and Ben Jacobs had two each to round out the scoring. “We executed all right when we got into our offense. But, we had trouble getting into our offense at times with Decorah’s man-to-man pressure. We didn’t handle their pressure as well as we would have liked,” said the coach. Kruckenberg was the leading rebounder as he had six. He also had one assist and one steal.

According to Sass, Postville’s defense was “pretty good.” “We did a nice job defensively with the exception of boxing out and keeping them off the boards,” he noted. This game, Coach Sass said, came down to two things. “We let them get way too many offensive rebounds especially in the first half. Secondly, we had way too many turnovers. We need to do a better job of handling the ball as a team.”

at Maynard...

Last Tuesday, January 4, the Pirates traveled to Maynard to face the West Central Blue Devils. Postville dominated the game, 57-21. The game started well for the Pirates, getting ahead 17-0 to start the game. “We came out with good intensity and forced a lot of turnovers and got some easy hoops early,” noted Sass. Leading the way for Postville was Dallas Imoehl with 15 points. Ben Jacobs and Zach Steffans were also in double figures with 13 and 11 respectively. Dillon Schlee added eight and Nick Wedo chipped in four. Andy Jacobson, Justin Kruckenberg and Cody Jarmes had two each. “Ben Jacobs was our second leading scorer in this game coming off the bench,” said the coach. “He did a nice job as did the entire team.” “Offensively, we did a nice job of moving the ball versus their zone,” continued the coach. Although they had a good night scoring, the Pirates only got to the free throw line four times and were unable to connect on any of them. Defensively, Imoehl had eight rebounds, one assist and two steals. Schlee and Wedo each added six boards. Schlee also had four assists and eight steals. Jacobs had four rebounds and two assists. Andy Jacobson also had four rebounds,

two assist and blocked three shots. Kruckenberg had two assists and three steals. Cody Jarmes had two rebounds, five assists and two steals. Alex Enyart also had a rebound as did Zach Steffans and Zach Szabo. Steffans also had three steals. “We executed pretty well in this game. Our press wasn’t perfect, but it was the first time we had run it, so this was to be expected. We still forced many turnovers with it,” noted Sass.

He continued, “This was a good win for us. It was good to have a blow-out win. Sometimes you need that as a team. Many kids got a lot of minutes and lots of good things happened for them. This was a good confidence booster for us. Hopefully, it will carry us over into our next game.”

at Arlington...

The Pirates also traveled to Arlington this past Saturday, January 8, to face the

Starmont Stars. Pick up next week’s Herald for all the highlights from that game. This week the Pirates were slated to play at Valley Tuesday night, January 11 against the Tigers in a co-ed match-up. To close the week, the team will travel to Guttenberg to face the Clayton Ridge Eagles Friday night, January 14, in another boygirl tilt.

at Maynard...

Last Tuesday evening, January 4, the Lady Pirates traveled to Maynard to face West Central. The Lady Pirates dominated the game and came away with a 55-20 victory. “We started out very against West Central and we just kept going the whole game,” noted Coach Daryl Schultz. “Mariah, Alanda, Katelyn, Ashley, Shaunaye and Shanna all played well off the bench,” said Schutlz. “It was

good to see them get some quality minutes in a game situation. Kim and Brittany continue to share and work hard in the post position as well.” The Pirates had three girls in double digits. Hannah Radloff and Shanna Wettleson each had 11 and Kristine Schissel poured in ten. Radloff had three from downtown and added one other field goal. Wettleson also made a three pointer and had three field goals. She was a perfect two for two from the free-throw line. Schissel had five field goals and missed the one free throw attempt. Abby Eberling dumped in eight points as she

made four field goals. Whitney Deering added five points as she had one from behind the arc and one field goal. Kim Kraus and Shaunaye Hendry had four points each. Kraus had two field goals and Hendry added a field goal and two free throws. Brittany Lenth added one field goal for two points. The Pirates also had 12 assists while the Blue Devils could only muster up four. Postville came up with 18 steals on the night while West Central only had eight. Defensively, the Pirates out-rebounded West Central 33 to 28. Pleased with the defense,

Coach Schultz shared he felt the Postville offense and defense were clicking. “We put in a new defense over the holiday break, I felt we had good ball pressure and played the passing lanes well,” he noted. “Between Kristine and Whitney we had eleven steals. Now that is good defense.” Leading rebounder was Eberling who had nine and Radloff, Schissel and Deering each had five. Kraus added four and Lenth had two. “This is the first team we have out rebounded. It was great to see Abby grab nine boards,” said Schultz. The Pirates dominated the game from the beginning as

they scored 16 first quarter points and led at the half 3410. They were able to keep the opponents away from the hoop the entire night as they were only able to score ten points in each half. With everyone seeing action, the Pirates scored 21 points in the second half to end the game by a 35 point margin.

Brittany Lenth was out this game after spraining her ankle during warm-ups. The home-team Stars took the early lead as they out scored the Pirates 11-7 in the first quarter. “We scored three points and then went on a seven to zero run,” noted the coach. “After a time out we played much better defense and held them to just three points in the second quarter. After halftime we played a 2-3 zone which didn’t work out very well.” After going back to their

Chad Drahn Herald Sports

Parent’s Night...

Last Thursday evening, January 6, the Pirate grapplers hosted Turkey Valley and North Fayette in a double dual. The Pirates fell to Turkey Valley by four, but bounced back to defeat the Hawks.

Turkey Valley “We gave up too many bonus points. These duals that are close come down to the bonus points,” stated Coach Bobby Schultz about the four-point loss to the Trojans. The evening started out well when Tyler Anderson got a pin in a junior varsity match. In the varsity bout, Tanner Deering and Blake Everman dominated their matches. Alejandro Nunez also had a big pin in his match at 119. The match went down to the wire with Nunez getting the

pin in the last 30 seconds. North Fayette had beaten us by one point earlier this season in the first meet of the year.” “We have been telling [Guese] he has been real close to getting some wins and he got a big one,” noted Schultz on Mitchell Guese’s pin. Tanner Walker was in a close match even though he ended up getting pinned. However, Juanito got a pin to seal the win. “We had some freshmen wrestle real well. Blake and Taylor also had key wins,” said the Coach. “Alex Pfister had a big JV win as well. We made a lot of improvement over the holiday break and it showed.” “I would like to thank the fans who came out and supported us. It was nice to have a big crowd,” concluded Schultz.

North Fayette The Pirates came back to defeat North Fayette by a score of 39 to 27. Schultz said, “It was great to bounce

at Central...

Saturday morning, January 8, the Pirate wrestlers traveled to Elkader to participate in the Central tournament. According to Coach Schultz the Postville grapplers had a couple of good rounds, and a couple of not so good rounds. “Alejandro had a real good tournament. After losing the first round, he came back to dominate the next three matches,” he noted. Mitchell Becker started the day very well as he got two early pins. Tanner Deering got second. “[Tanner] really closed the gap on the kid from Oelwein who dominated him a few weeks ago,” stated Schultz. Blake Everman had a good day, though he had a bad 45 seconds against the Oelwein opponent. “Dalton Ott got his firsts two pins of the season which was great,” extolled Schultz. “Alex Pfister and Colton Becker also had a couple of big wins which was nice. We need to be more consistent for the whole day at tournaments like these.” “This was a good tournament for us to go to because everyone got to wrestle at least four matches except for Trenton Plaht at the highest weight,” concluded the Coach.
