The Pioneer Residency, situated along Queen’s Quay and Merchant’s Wharf in Toronto, sets a benchmark for the future of sustainable residential design. It integrates modern design with locally sourced sustainable materials including reclaimed wood, recycled metals, and local concrete. Spray insulation enhances energy efficiency by reducing heat loss, and CLT columns for a more sustainable framework. Solar panels provide for a portion of energy while prioritizing energy and water efficient fixtures. This design emphasizes accessibility to transit, natural lighting, and quality views of Lake Ontario creating a comfortable, environmentally conscious living space.

OLDENBURG & SHOFIELD
Residential Retrofit Winter 2023
Professor: Steffanie Adams
Collaborators: Anthony Pignatelli
Softwares: Revit, Twinmotion
Ms. Oldenburg, 72, owns a large house that is no longer suitable for her and she wants to move in her friend Mr. Shofield, 75. However, their lifestyle needs require significant renovations. They aim to maintain independence while coordinating healthcare and social services. This proposed retrofit follows a contemporary modern design. The new layout enhances circulation and movement, both horizontally and vertically to improve accessibility and mobility, allowing occupants to reach their necessities more easily while providing individual spaces for their own privacy. The second-floor rental space provides visitors with their own area, while still maintaining ample room for the residents’ needs.
