Manager’s Corner General Managers Report May 2015 Hello Trilogy!

Have you ever heard the saying, “April showers brings May flowers?” Well the showers part is defiantly not the case this year, which brings me to my May topic: The California Drought.

The Board and Management are frequently asked, what is the Association doing in regards to the drought? To answer this question, it is important for the community to understand how the restrictions work and have some knowledge and understanding of the Association’s responsibilities under the governing documents and the community’s irrigation system.

Understanding the Restrictions: The State of California imposes water restrictions on the local water departments (districts) not the individual homeowners and it’s the water departments’ responsibility to implement the restrictions. The Association and community is governed by restrictions imposed by Lee Lake Water District (LLWD). Lee Lake Water District has not imposed any new restrictions; however, at their April 28, 2015 Board of Directors meeting Lee Lake tabled their new Water Conservation Program. Management has obtained a copy of the draft plan and is currently evaluating the restriction within and developing a compliance plan for the community. Lee Lake is expected to re-review the draft at their May 26, 2015 meeting. Management would like to remind the residents that the conservation plan is currently a draft and when or if it is approved by Lee Lake, all restrictions will be shared with the membership.

It is important for the community to understand the restrictions are on potable (drinkable) water only. The water that irrigates Trilogy Parkway, the facility buildings’ landscape, common area landscape eastside of Trilogy Parkway and all of the Avocado Orchards (except in Modjeska and Cobblestone Canyons) are irrigated with Agricultural water (AG water) that currently has no restrictions. AG water is not reclaimed water but water coming directly from the ground.

The Association gets this water from the golf course and the golf course gets it from LLWD. Lee Lake Water District recently upgraded the AG water delivery lines that feed the golf course and has dedicated two (2) wells that according to the LLWD General Manager are in no danger of drying out.

So you may be asking yourself, what areas are using potable water? Potable water is what is being used to water every residents’ front and backyard landscape, including the Cobblestone Condominiums. If you’re wondering why not convert to AG water for all residents’ landscape irrigation, the answer is that AG water is not cleaned or treated and cannot to be used in or around residential homes. Therefore, potable water is what we have to use and as stated above is what is being restricted.

The Association Responsibly under the CC&Rs and understanding Community’s Irrigation System: One of the most common phrases heard throughout Trilogy is, “Shea Homes did not do us any favors.” This is particularly true when it comes to the Association’s responsibility to maintain homeowners’ front yard landscaping and irrigation.

The Association, as outlined under Article 9, Section 3 – Maintenance Obligations of the Master Association, is responsible to “maintain” the landscaping and irrigation in residents’ front yards. Defining what “maintain” actually means in an association is a difficult task because it means something different to every homeowner and every homeowner has a different interpretation on the standard or level their front yard is to be maintained. What is acceptable to one is not necessarily acceptable to another.

MAINTENANCE: the act of maintaining : the state of being maintained the upkeep of property or equipment

MAINTAIN: 

to keep in an existing state (as of repair, efficiency, or validity): preserve from failure or decline.

Now I am not writing this to discuss how well, in your mind, the Association via Valley Crest is maintaining your particular front yard, (remember, Since the Association is responsible to maintain 1,317 front yards, there are bound to be issues) but to give you an understanding and clarity of the role of the Association. The Association is responsible to maintain the current condition of the front yards and despite some individual issues, as a whole all canyons look beautiful!

By understanding the Association’s maintenance responsibility it becomes very clear why the Association is in control of residents’ front yard irrigation. Proper irrigation is vital to plant and turf health and if the Association is responsible to keep plants alive and healthy, they must have control over the irrigation. This is a daunting task because not every home has the same plant material and irrigation needs. In addition, to make things more complicated, Shea wired the community to irrigate three to four homes at a time. This is the reason why we experience the number of issues we do.

For example: if your home receives more shade and less sunshine than the other homes watering at the same time or is located downhill from those homes (water drains downhill) your lawns will remain wet and create an overwatering effect.

So you may be asking why not separate the homes to water individually? The bottom line is this would require the Association putting control of the watering into the residents’ hands which is not in compliance with the CC&Rs. The only way to do this is to vote on altering the CC&Rs again. It also means that if residents do not irrigate their front yards correctly the turf and/or plant material may die. As stated above it is the Association’s responsibility to maintain the current condition of the landscape and if plants and turf should die, it’s the Association’s responsible to replace them.

This will be an expense passed on to all homeowners through their monthly assessments. If enough residents do not keep their plant material healthy this expense quickly can get out of control, requiring further increases in Association dues.

As a way to help manage the irrigation issues, the community installed an irrigation system called WeatherTrak several years ago. WeatherTrak is an advanced weather tracking system that automates irrigation schedules based on landscape-specific parameters (such as plant, soil, slope and sprinkler type) and quickly establish optimal irrigation schedules to properly maintain the landscaping. All irrigation schedules are based on this system and these types of systems are highly recommended for communities such as Trilogy by water departments as a means of controlling and utilizing the correct amount of water. Please note: When a resident decides to turn off their water or make changes to their front yard irrigation sprinklers, it throws off the system and those homes irrigating with the home that made the changes will be negatively affected. These effects may include but are not limited to: overwatering, under watering, pressure issues, and dead or dying plant material.

What is the Association doing?

Now that you have a base knowledge and understanding of how the restrictions work, the Association’s responsibility under the governing documents and the community’s irrigation system we can now answer the question; what is the HOA doing in regards to the drought? This will be broken up into two sections Common Area and Residents’ Front Yards.

COMMON AREA A. The Association with assistance from the Landscape Committee and Valley Crest are identifying addition areas that could benefit from turf removal. These areas consist of the parkway strips on Trilogy Parkway, the medians east of Warm Springs and areas around the facility buildings. The committee will also be looking into any additional areas inside the canyons.

Manager’s Corner Corner...Continued B. The Association with assistance from the Landscape Committee, Energy Task Force, and Valley Crest are identifying areas of the common area that can be converted to drip irrigation. Drip irrigation uses less water and avoids runoff.

C. The Association is aggressively working with LLWD and the golf course on a water conversion project. As mentioned above the common area and Avocado slopes in Modjeska and Cobblestone Canyons are currently being watered by potable water. The project is to convert these area to AG water similar to the other common areas throughout Trilogy. Please see the Projects in Progress section below for an update on this project.

RESIDENTS’ FRONT YARDS A. At the minimum, the Association will continue to adhere to all restrictions placed on the community by Lee Lake Water District.

B. Bids are being obtained from Landscape Architects to develop several drought tolerant front yard landscape designs that will be pre-approved by the Design Review Committee. Remember it is the Association’s responsibility to maintain residents’ front yards not to upgrade or change them. This is the responsibility of the individual homeowner. In an effort to make things easier for those homeowners who want to change the landscaping in their front yard to be more drought tolerant, the Association will develop acceptable designs that will not compromise or drastically change the look of the canyons. Plant choices will be made available along with negotiated pricing from Valley Crest.

C. The Association is looking into installing precision nozzles to the turf areas located at all residents. These nozzles are estimated to use 5% - 10% less water than the standard nozzles. The issue the Association is currently working out is installation and adjustments costs. These are advanced nozzles and installation is more then just replacing the old nozzles. It requires adjustments and possible additional, elimination and or relocation of existing heads. In addition, remember that three or four homes irrigate at the same time and all homes must be converted to work properly. Please note: This isn’t a budgeted expense and the Association will have to determine funding; which may or may not include assistance from TGIS. D. The Association is also researching how to convert residential planters to drip irrigation at a reasonable expense. The Annual meeting of the membership is quickly approaching. There are three (3) open positions on the Board of Directors and five (5) candidates. The candidates include incumbents Galen Gorman and Marilyn Mohr; newcomers Robert Michowski, and Roberta Tandy and a past board member Janice Walker. Please do not forget to vote. All ballots are to be returned to the PCL or the Lake Center Business Office by Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 12:00 P.M. If you miss this deadline you must return your ballot in person at the Annual Meeting.

RECENTLY COMPLETED PROJECTS: 

Tree Trimming – April consisted of Trimming of the trees in Cobblestone Canyon. Trimming crews will begin in Modjeska Canyon in May. Please note: the trees are trimmed to promote health and growth and because certain species are trimmed at different times of the year or every other year, not every tree may be trimmed in your canyon.

Temescal Valley Sign – The Tr ilogy at Glen Ivy Temescal Valley sign has been installed. It is located in the median on Trilogy Parkway as you enter the community from Temescal Canyon Road. The Association has also ordered an additional sign to be installed on Trilogy Parkway near the Cobblestone Entrance.

Landscape Enhancement – At the March General Session meeting the Board approved seven (7) landscape enhancement projects. All the projects have been completed.

Revised Master Association and Cobblestone CC&R’s – the r ecently appr oved Master and Cobblestone CC&R’s have been officially recorded. In an effort to save the Association on postage, the new CC&R documents will be mailed to all owners when the financial audit is completed and distributed. This is estimated to be done by the end of July 2015. In addition, the revised Master and Cobblestone Rules and Regulations and Design Guidelines that are up for approval by the Board at the June meeting will also be sent with the audit. If any homeowner would like a copy of these documents before they are mailed, please contact the Business Office at 951-277-7059 for a document request form.

PROJECTS IN PROGRESS:  Lake 16 – Management and the Boar d of Dir ector s ar e still dedicated at finding a solution to Lake 16.

Unfortunately, there are no updates or new developments on this project.  Community Website – Exolet and the Communications Committee have made some great progress in recent months on the new website. We are hoping to launch the new website in the next couple months. Keep your fingers crossed!  BWSC Pools and Spa Resurfacing – The wor k on the outdoor pool is completed and r eady for use.

The indoor pool resurfacing will begin on May 13th.



 

Avocado Slopes Irrigation Conversion – The Association is cur r ently wor king on conver ting the ir r igation for the Modjeska and Cobblestone Canyon Avocado Slopes and common area landscape from potable water to Agricultural water. At the recommendation of Lee Lake Water District, Management met with Van Dyke Landscape Architects and received a bid from them to develop the conversion plan and blueprints. Management forwarded the proposal to Lee Lake requesting financial assistance. Lee Lake approved the financial assistance as long as the golf course sends written correspondence to Lee Lake stating that they will approve the conversion. The golf course has provided written correspondence stating that they will work with the Association. Once Lee Lake approves the letter provided by the golf course the Association will move forward with the project.

BWSC Additional Lighting – The pr oposals to add additional lighting near the outdoor pool, fir eplace and spa was tabled by the Board. Management is working with the vendors to obtain more information and provide additional options.

Bocce Ball Court Repairs – Work has begun on obtaining bids to repair the Bocce Ball Court. Several vendors have inspected the court and will be providing their recommendations and proposed repair costs.

CODE COMPLIANCE

Monthly Street Sweeping: Wednesday, May 6th The 1st Wednesday of every month between 8:00am and 12:00pm all vehicles need to be off the streets to effectively clean the streets.

**Reminder** The trash pick-up day is Monday. Trash cans may be set out the day before and after pick-up. Other than those times, trash cans must be stored in the garage or behind a screened fence. Trash cans cannot be visible from the front of the home.

Evelyn Whitehead MEMORIAL DAY FUN FACTS Facility Administrator/ Enforcement Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to place flowers on the graves of the soldiers that paid the ultimate price. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30.

It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

Keep your personal gate codes private!

It is very important that all residents keep their 4 digit canyon gate codes private. This code is meant for residents only; such as when your gate clicker is not working or you forget your gate clicker. It is important to remember that once you give someone your 4 digit canyon code, they can come into your canyon at any time, whether you are expecting them or not. They can also give that code to anyone else.

The three digit directory code is the code that will call your phone number (as long as it is a 951 area code and it was provided to the Lake Center) when anyone you are expecting is waiting at the gate. This enables you to authorize entry into the canyon for anyone you are expecting, such as a pizza delivery person, plumber, or repairman.

Landscaping If it is determined that you have removed, killed, or altered any Association installed and/or maintained landscaping; you are in violation and may be subject to enforcement proceedings.

Board Broadcast BOARD BROADCAST Wishing a “HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY” to all mothers residing in Trilogy at Glen Ivy. A Mother, Daughter, Granddaughter Tea is being held in the Ballroom on May 16th. Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, is a federal holiday set aside to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. We also want to acknowledge all of our Trilogy veterans on Armed Forces Day, May 16, 2015. Thank you, to all those who have so sacrificially served our Country.

The TGMA Annual Meeting will be held May 14, 2015 at 1:00 PM; when the election for three new board members will be closed and the ballots will be counted. Once the ballots have been tallied, the Annual Meeting will reconvene at 6:00 P.M., and the results will be announced at that time.

Below are the actions and decisions of the Board at the April meetings: 





   



Board approved 2015/16 Budget Requests from the Emergency Preparedness Committee in the amount of $5,000; and the Fitness and Wellness Team in the amount of $7,000. Both of these requests will be submitted to TGIS for funding.

Approved a contract with Para Landscape to add additional irrigation heads for the avocado trees in Saddleback and Coldwater Canyons at a cost not to exceed $4,704.00 to be expended from Irrigation Reserves.

Approved new paint schemes presented by the Design Review Committee for the exterior of residential homes, and also approved new guidelines surrounding the approval of the scheme prior to the commencement of the work. If a resident is planning to repaint their home, they should contact the Lake Center for colors and approval process.

Approved sending the Rules and Regulations revisions and the Master and Cobblestone Design Guidelines revisions to the membership for thirty-day review and comment period.

Approved revisions to the Volunteer Application, Waiver of Liability form and the Governance Standard for Volunteers.

Made revisions to the Enforcement and Fine Policy to increase the suspension period for code of conduct violations, based on the severity of the violation.

Approved a contract with Van Dyke Landscape Architects to design and engineer a system to convert specific areas of the community currently being irrigated by potable water to Agriculture (AG) water, contingent upon receiving approval from the Glen Ivy Golf Course to allow connection into their AG water system. Cost for this service is $14,935.00 and will be funded by Lee Lake Water District.

Approved contract with Barr Engineering to replace Pacific Crest Lodge air conditioning unit #1 motor at a cost not to exceed $2,865.00 to be expended from the Lodge Reserve Account.

A reminder to those who wish to continue to serve on committees and any members who wish to join a committee; it is required that you submit a new application for the 2015/16 Fiscal Year. Applications will be presented for approval at the June 2nd General Session. We welcome your participation and encourage you to become involved.

TGIS Update TGIS BOARD REPORT The TGIS (Trilogy at Glen Ivy Community Services) monthly meeting is on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. in the Lake Center. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The TGIS Board of Directors have the responsibility of creating and developing new programs and activities for the residents of our community. Our goal is to do the best job adding to everyone's fun and fulfilling lifestyle here for Trilogy at Glen Ivy. In our recent board meeting, we discussed or funded the following activities: 1. The new Trilogy website that TGIS is supporting will be operational soon. The TGMA Communication Committee wants everyone to enjoy the new features of the website and let the Committee know what you think of it. A short video will be provided that helps everyone get started with their first look.

2. The latest funding included the Sheriff Volunteer program, Emergency Preparedness, 2 AED units, Health and Wellness Committee and the Newcomers event.

3. The Sunshine Clubs have expressed their appreciation for the funds supplied last year for canyon social events. The reports are documenting the increased participation and enthusiasm for the neighborhood activity.

4. A new TGIS Creative Committee has developed a marketing and advertising program which will promote our community to the general public. The advertising Tri-fold is printed and will be distributed to the residents and will also be used for our outside marketing program. You can get additional brochures at the Lodge front desk to give to friends and family.

5. A plan was discussed about the purchase of a performing stage for the Pacific Crest Lodge Ballroom. The interested club leaders are involved in deciding what size and features to consider. We hope to have this decided within a couple of months.

6. The balance of TGIS funds as of February 28, 2015 was $625,965. The balance as of March 31, 2015 was $637,975.

There were 7 home sales in Trilogy that closed escrow in February. The result of those transactions provided $13,762 to the revenue for TGIS. 7. TGIS has reserved a booth for the Temescal Valley Community Faire on May 16. The Faire is in Deleo Regional Park in the Sycamore Canyon Community. The plan is to promote Trilogy at Glen Ivy with our brochures and other marketing plans. Please plan to attend and visit the volunteers.

We continue to ask for suggestions that will improve our lives here at Trilogy. Again, the five categories are: 1. Clubs and Social Activities 2. Health and Wellness 3. Communication and Technology 4. Educational and Academic 5. Environmental We thank you for your submissions. Committee/Program Reports…

The Trilogy Sheriff Volunteers held their monthly training meeting April 6, 2015. The main training topic was our responsibilities during the Great Shakeout Drill. Three stations were set up and manned by Lt. Montoya, Lt. Preiser, and Sgt. Buttes. Larry Buttes's outdoor station focused on security, placement of cones, and patrol vehicle operation. Dieter Preiser's station was the communication center focusing on radio transmission.

Chuck Motoya's station reviewed basic first aid and a review of the emergency equipment located in our patrol unit. The Great Shakeout Drill is held the 3rd Thursday in October.

The Sheriff Volunteer of the Month: RICHARD LEWIS Richard was promoted to rank of Acting Sgt. and given his pin (bars) by Lt Montoya. Richard patrolled 28.5 hours. Richard and his wife Sue, moved to Trilogy in late 2013. He retired from Boeing in 2014 where he worked as a Computer Security and Operations System Engineer. Richard holds a dual bachelors degree in Advertising from ASU and Computer Information Systems from Cal Baptist. Richard previously owned a bicycle shop for almost 20 years. At Trilogy, Richard is a member of the Table Tennis Club and is on the Technology Committee. Richard often can be seen patrolling on his bike throughout each canyon. The Trilogy Volunteer Sheriff’s commend Bob and Linda Gwyn for a combined total of 39.5 patrol hours during March.

Deputy Whitford submitted crime statistics as: two burglaries, one vehicle theft, one theft from a vehicle, and one assault – all in surrounding areas.

NO crime was reported within the Trilogy Community.

John Cosgrove opened discussion for obtaining an AED for the patrol vehicle – discussion to be continued.

The Trilogy volunteers who worked the DUI checkpoint shared their experience and Deputy Whitford expressed his gratitude.

Wellness Corner May is Arthritis Awareness Month.

Exercise is so important for all of us especially if you have arthritis.

Exercising is crucial when you have arthritis. It’s tricky, because exercising may not be the thing you want to do in the morning but it could be the best thing your body needs. Exercising can reduce joint pain and increase flexibility. Exercising can also help with overall joint stiffness. Lack of exercise brings more pain and stiffness. Not exercising puts more stress on your joints. Exercising makes your heart and blood vessels healthier and can prevent disability. Good conditioning exercises for people with arthritis are walking, bicycling, an elliptical machine, and swimming. The Arthritis Foundation will be here May 26th at 11:00am presenting “Put Pain in Its Place”! Please join us!

To: All Trilogy Veterans and Supporters

Trilogy Veterans Club members attending the March 31st meeting viewed video presentations reflecting on the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima (February 19 – March 26, 1945). The Japanese defenders of the island were dug into bunkers deep within the island volcanic rocks.

Approximately 70,000 U.S. Marines and 18,000 Japanese soldiers took part in the battle. Nearly 7,000 U.S. Marines were killed. Twenty-seven Medals of Honor were awarded for action on Iwo Jima – more than any other battle in U.S. history.

BOOK CLUB The Trilogy Book Club meets on the FIRST Wednesday of each month in the “Center for Well Being” at the Blue Water Sports Club from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. This is primarily a fiction club, and we have an exciting list of books for your reading pleasure.

The selection for May 6 is: The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard F lanagan. The story moves from 1943 in a Japanese POW camp on the Burma-Death Railway, to contemporary Australia and is a story of love, death, and family, exploring the many forms of good and evil, war and truth, guilt and transcendence, as one comes of age, prospers, only to discover all that he has lost.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB New member Debby Bolton was welcomed at our April meeting. Pamela Stahl presented a photo travelogue of her river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg, Russia. The countryside photos were beautiful, as were the night shots. Pamela also had wonderful architectural photos of many interesting buildings and other features including World Heritage Sites, cathedrals, palaces, the Monument to Peter the Great, and the “Marriage Tree.” Pamela’s photos generated interest in traveling to Russia.

At our May meeting we will return to our Photography 101 presentations, with a focus on in-camera programs. Join us at 1:00 PM on the second Thursday of every month at the Lake Center. The theme for May’s Photo of the Month (POM) is “macro” (close-ups).

TRILOGY ON THE ROOF MEMBERSHIP 2016 On Sunday June 1, 2008 we said "A New Club is Being Formed at Trilogy Glen Ivy". Join us for bagels and lox ( and 135 people did ). Our membership is now over 350 people.

We look back with love and pride at many successes, many shared friendships and experiences... And we welcome all the NEW groups and clubs and wish them much success as well. Our club has touched the lives of so many Trilogy people over the years. Whatever the future brings, we pledge to give our "Best" to Trilogy.

Our next event will be held on June 6, 2015, with a theme of the Cultures of the South Pacific. We will enjoy Polynesian, Tahitian, Samoan Hawaiian dances, music and songs. We will feast on Polynesian/ Hawaiian food, enjoy the South Pacific Fire Cocktail as well as beer and wine, which will be included (as usual) in the ticket price.

Tickets will be available for World Fest Club members starting Tuesday, May 5, 2015 and nonmembers starting May 12, 2015. For price and time of purchase please see the flyers in the Mailroom.

Birthday’s for Charity!

On behalf of the Birthdays for Charity Board members and Peppermint Ridge, we would like to express our heart felt thanks to those who generously donated their time and money to make our February 5th luncheon another smashing success.

The Pacific Crest Lodge was filled to capacity with 160 gift spirited men and woman that gathered together to celebrate in giving to those in need. Our 3rd Trilogy “birthday party” was enjoyed by everyone that attended. Tracy Mauser was the speaker for Peppermint Ridge. She was enthusiastic, funny, and delightful. Tracy brought one of the residents with her to the luncheon as well. Everyone seemed to enjoy the Mexican meal. Joey Mercado, a Trilogy resident entertained us with her puppets making us all smile! Those attending loved the yummy ice cream and cake for dessert. Everything was delicious. It was a great party!

Birthdays for Charity presented a check in the amount of $3,285.000 to Peppermint Ridge on February 13th. Tracy was overwhelmed and filled with gratitude. She wanted us to extend our thanks to all of you for so kindly giving to their local charity.

Side note: Veena Sahay came up to one of the Board members after the last luncheon and said, “This is the best thing that has ever come out of Trilogy - giving to others that are really in need!” Several individuals expressed similar comments.

On Thursday, June 4th Birthdays for Charity will honor the Salvation Army. We will meet in the Pacific Crest Lodge at Noon. Donations will stay in the Riverside and Corona area.

The Salvation Army’s mission is to feed, to clothe, to comfort and care for the needs of others especially after disasters.

They rebuild broken homes, and the broken lives of those in the grasp of addiction. They lead hurting people to recovery.

The Salvation Army operates 7,546 centers across the United States with disaster relief, food distribution, rehabilitation centers, anti-human trafficking efforts and programs for children. They are funded through Kettle donations, corporate donations and the sale of goods in their stores. Eighty-two cents of every dollar goes to the various missions across the country. They are a tax exempt organization and contributions are deductible.

Thanks again to every one of you that have contributed in the past. Celebrating our birthdays as a community is a wonderful way to share time together and to get to know each other a little bit better. The cost of the luncheon is $5.00 payable to Patti Blyleven. She will start accepting your checks on Friday, May 1st. Patti lives in Saddleback Canyon and you may place your check in the mailbox by her front door. Tickets available Saturday, May 2 from 3:00p.m to 5:00p.m. at the lodge.

NOBEL CANYON We enjoyed our monthly Birthday Luncheon “once in a while” change of venue in March by going to BJ’s Restaurant. We returned to Fridays at Dos Lagos for our April Birthday Luncheon. We plan in the future to check on other restaurant possibilities for an occasional change. We only had three birthdays to celebrate this month. This included Joyce Fehn, Jodi Hatch and Colleen Jensen. The only attending birthday girl was Joyce.

We wish Jodi and Colleen belated Happy Birthdays.

Many of our Nobel Canyon family attended the Trilogy on the Roof “A Night at the Theater” event. They were treated to a delicious catered dinner and talented performances from the student and faculty members of the Music Department of La Sierra University.

STONE CANYON Hi Neighbors!

Happy May Day! The month of May marks the end of spring and the beginning of summer. The bees are buzzing, the flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping. There's growing anticipation of barbecue get-togethers, outdoor activities and beach parties. School age children are anticipating the last day of school for summer vacation and parents are planning family vacations. Mother's Day gives us a chance to honor our Mothers and Grandmothers, and Memorial Day gives us a chance to commemorate the US Soldiers who died in military service. It’s time to celebrate May! Our May Canyon activities include a trip to the Lawrence Welk Theater to see the show “Cabaret”. This will take place on Thursday, May 28th , and will be a carpool event. Watch for the Evite which will have all the information you will need! Our first Canyon Block Party of the year will be Friday, May 29th at 6pm, at the Cuyamaca Park. We will have a Mexican themed potluck, so get out your favorite Mexican dish recipe and join your neighbors for a fun social evening!

CANYON LUNCHEONS:

Our monthly luncheons are a lot of fun. We laugh, talk, give out prizes and celebrate birthdays.

At our March luncheon, fourteen of us celebrated the birthdays of Roseann, Beverly, Ilene and Diane. Three lucky winners leave with prizes every month. You could be the next winner – but you have to be there to win.

Our next luncheon will be May 27th. To get the details so you can join in the fun and be added to the luncheon reservation list, contact Judie Townsend MODJESKA DINNER CLUB is going strong with a new organizer and format. Three couples (one of which is designated as host) are drawn by lottery and change every month. Guests provide a salad, appetizer or dessert, as requested by the host and the host provides the rest of the meal plus basic beverages. Every few months a local restaurant is selected and the entire Dinner Club group goes to a restaurant for a social evening.

This is a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors. The next group restaurant outing will be in May. Join us to meet the group and get started with the Dinner Club. For more information or to sign up, contact Carol Nichols.

SUNSHINE CLUB: New officers were elected at the April meeting. Nonette Allen will continue as CoPresident with Fran Losch replacing Susan Fischetti as the other Co-President. Linda Kesig will continue as Treasurer and Priscilla Williams will continue as Secretary. To lighten the load for the presidents, volunteers agreed to head up the various events and functions of the Sunshine Club. New members are always welcome.

Functions of the Sunshine club include delivering new neighbor packets, providing help to neighbors in need due to illness or loss of a family member, participation at the annual Trilogy Boutique and the holding of various canyon functions like the dinner dance held April 26 (photos will be in next month’s newsletter. If you’d like to get involved, contact a Sunshine Club officer.

COLDWATER CANYON Get the picnic baskets out, our CCSC MONTHLY POTLUCK NIGHT "FOODIE'S FEST" for the summer starts Thursday, May 7th at 5:30-7:30p.m. At the BWSC Spa/Fireside area. Patio, BBQ's and 3 Cabanas are reserved for us on the 1st Thursday of each month May through August for these gatherings. Always well attended, our canyon neighbor gatherings are casual and friendly. Amazing fact is while there is never food pre-planning, all the foods each of us share blend together perfectly. Bring a dish or appetizer to share, your own beverage and utensils and join in.

Creative juices flowed when our CCSC April Canyon Luncheon centered around the theme "Spring Hats." Many of our gals rallied to the request of Winnie Black and Judy Kennedy, our luncheon coordinators to wear a Spring Hat. Digging deep into the back shelves of long forgotten boxes held just the perfect blossom, netting, maybe a feather or two. Just plop it on a straw hat and voila'....a new adventure. The feminine mystic is alive and well under the brim of a stylish chapeau. An afternoon of healthy laughter and fun, held on EARTH DAY enjoying a catered gourmet luncheon salad bar at the Lake Center.

Bibi Maxwell delighted the gals with her stunning "Southern Belle Topper" captured exquisitely with a combination of netting, silk, straw and flowers. For that she won "Best of Hat."
