Initial Typographic Pairings: Week 1

Good Example

I believe this picture (Figure 1) I took of a 40-count water bottle from Sam’s that my mom bought today, has good typography. To start off, the text font of the packaging is simple and not all over the place, with a mixture of different fonts. The lettering of the text is all the same size, and the text is laid out evenly so that the buyer has quick accessible access to read and understand the product. All the letter spaces are even out, as well there are no big spaces or small spaces, just about the right amount of space. Immediately when I saw the 40-count water bottle from Sam’s, I thought how good the typography was because it was quick to read and simple font with nothing distracting my eyes. The message was clear and understandable. Another thing to note is the image of the water bottles on the packaging got me at first because they were showing different direction but it hit me that if the buyer wants to view of the bottle look when it comes to picking up the package it show on either direction so the buyer doesn’t have to turn it around the other way to view the image since it shows either direction.

Bad Example

I believe this picture (Figure 2) I took of the back of an Ed Sheeran CD, has bad typography. To begin with, the text font feels all over the place because there are more than just one font on the back of the CD. Some of the text is bold, while some of the other text isn’t. It gravitates the eyes to look all over the place and not in one direction. The spacing of the text is also a bit off because some are in the middle, but others start off either left or right. The lettering of the text is inconsistent in size and is not laid out evenly. Also, the lettering of the text is spaced out a bit separately. When I saw this Ed Sheeran CD, I thought, ‘Yes, it’s cool to try to have it a bit all over, but at the same time, it’s distracting to the eye.’ The message is clear and understandable, but the font of the text throws it way off, especially with the different font, size, spacing, and attention grabber. Something to note is that, yes, there is a vision, but there are some things that could be changed differently.

Good Example

I believe this picture (figure 1), which I took of the Commander air, plumbing, and electrical truck, has good typography. To start off, the font is easy to read and has good sizing that is eye-catching and easy to understand. When someone is driving or at a stop, they can view what the company offers in terms of service, which includes the phone number. The text font is perfectly great and not all over the place with different fonts that are distracting. The text is also bolded in black to catch the eye. The color sky blue adds a perfect touch to the truck and the text font, as it does not detract from the view but instead makes the text font stand out. The spacing of everything with the text, logo, and mascot is all even out and not scrambled together, compared to other service trucks that try to advertise their work. As someone who is driving and in need of these services, this example of the Commander air, plumbing, and electrical truck reaches potential customers for their service because it’s easy to read and shows what services they provide without having to put everything around the truck and having it all jumbled up.

Bad Example

This photo I took is an example of bad typography. To start, all the business names are in different fonts or colors. It has a mix of blues, reds, and black. Either some of the fonts are capitalized throughout, while others have a mix of upper- and lowercase text. Another thing to note is that some of the businesses’ texts are close to each other’s businesses, so you can’t really tell which one is which. The spacing and size of the font are kind of all over the place. When it comes to reading the sign with the names of the businesses, I feel like it’s hard to get the eye’s attention to gravitate the business names. The main one that grabs the attention of the eye is the first business, “Plantation Square.” This grabs the attention because all the text is capitalized with a bold blue color, and the spacing and sizing of the text are easy to read and not all over the place compared to some of the other names. The layout is not even, but jumbled together.

For someone driving and looking up at the names, it would be hard to tell what businesses there are because of how close to each other they are.

Good Example

I believe this photo I took of the Swiffer dry sweeping cloths that I found at my house is a good example of good typography. The text font of the packaging is simple and easy to read. It does not have many fonts all over the place. The text is laid out evenly so that it’s eye-catching and not distracting. So if the buyer was shopping at the store and in need of these products, the packaging is simple and quick to read on the go. All the text sizes are perfect, no complaints to say about that.

The spacing of the texts is perfect and easy to read. The packaging does a good job showcasing a side of the sweeping cloth so that people know what it looks like and know what they are buying as well. It peeks from behind a square with text on it, and it’s not distracting at all. The message is clear and understandable. Another thing to note the color scheme is perfect and not distracting to the eye at all, and I would consider this eye-catching. Overall, this is a good example of typography. This product displays everything evenly and has no points to point to because of how everything is laid evenly and not all over the place.

Bad Example

This picture I took of this flyer I found at Jitterbug. It is an example of bad typography. To begin with, the text spacing on “Garden show & record sale” could have been a bit spaced out because it seems to be squished together. They could have also picked out a better text due to the “G” being close together, which makes it look like an O. Also, they should not have added a part of the photo that covers the '&' and the 'E' in ‘sale’. It throws it off. Another thing to note is that they should not have added the text all in the middle near the corner, as it seems out of place. Also, they could have done better is making the flyer fill the rest of the paper, because there would have been more space to put the texts evenly. Something else they could have done better as well is to use a minimum of two fonts, because there seems to be at least 4 different fonts. If people would look at this flyer, their eyes don’t gravitate to one thing, but all over the place, because it’s like a zigzag. Starting from one end to the other.

Good Example

I found this flyer while traveling to Nashville, and I made a quick stop at Starbucks in Alabama.

This is a great example of good typography. The font of text is easy to read, and the letter spacing is evenly spaced out so that it’s not squished up together. The font size is a good size that is not too big or too small. The colors that are used under the text box complement each other, color that it doesn’t take away the attention from what the flyer has to say. The flyer is eye-catching. Immediately, while I was waiting in line, it caught my attention because it stood out compared to other flyers. The message is clear and understandable, and is not distracting to the eyes, so that the person would want to look at something different. Another thing is that there are 3 different fonts, but they all complement each other and do not seem all over the place, because there have been flyers that have different fonts that seem scattered and all over the place, which is not easy to read or not eye-catching, but more of a distraction. Overall, this is a good example of typography. This flyer displays everything evenly and has no points to point to because of how everything is laid out evenly and not all over the place.

Bad Example

I found this product in my house. This is a good example of bad typography. The font for “Brand new day” is are different font that doesn’t pair well together. The first two letters for “brand” and “new” are lowercase, and the D in “Day” is capitalized, which kind of throws it off, in my opinion.

Also, the “Disinfecting Wipes and Lavender & Cotton Blossom” are in black, which is not the best choice of color font due to the background being purple, and kind of blends in with the background.

It would have been a great choice if it were white with its lines in purple text. Also, the lettering spacing from “Lavender & Cotton Blossom” spacing seems a bit off. It seems that the text is kind of a bit separate and too right-sided instead of being aligned with Disinfecting Wipes. Another thing is that “Disinfecting Wipes being in bold makes no sense. Due to it already being on top already saying that it doesn’t make sense adding it twice to it. Overall, this is a good example of bad typography. This product has too much going on, especially with different font colors and fonts. It would be best to stick to a simpler one rather than many different ones.

Good Example

I found this flyer on a corkboard in the communication department while I was waiting for my class to start on Thursday. This flyer is a good example of good typography. All the text is evenly lined up, which makes it easy and eye-catching to the eye because everything is simple and not all over the place. It states every point. The letter space is even out as well, and the color choice for the text is one color, which is what makes the flyer nice and clean. The words Deadline, Requirements, and the Name of the scholarship are in bold lettering so that it states when it's due and shows who qualifies. The nice touch is the stars; it has two stars and didn’t overdo it with the star graphics. The message is clear and understandable, as well it is easy to read and states everything without having so much wording to make it look crazy. Overall, this is a good example of good typography. The flyer has a clean, even layout all the points each point and the requirements. The lettering spacing is even and not jumbled together, and uses one color, font, and spacing.

Bad Example

I saw this sign when I was walking into the Coffee Guy on Davis Hwy. This photo is an example of bad typography. To start, everything is all over the place, and so much is going on that you don’t know where to begin or what to look at. On one side, it showcases their app and that they do delivery. There are different fonts, some are bold, others are outlined. It’s not simple. Everything seems scrambled together. Another thing is the food item and what it has in each item; it all seems that the lettering is squished together and not enough spacing in it, which is not appealing to the eye and hard to read. The photo of each food is also jumbled up together, as well there is no spacing. Overall, this is a great example of bad typography. The sign shows so much that it’s not appealing but overwhelming,g especially for someone who is going there and wants to get something quick and not have to spend time searching for what lunch or breakfast items they have. Also, another thing to note is that it would be great if they removed about the app and delivery service because with that space, they would be able to add more of their items to that side.

Good Example

The picture I took of this hand soap bottle I have in my bathroom is a good example of good typography. The font choice of the bottle is a great choice because it is easy to read, and the font size and lettering space are even as well. Another thing to note the little graphics on the hand soap are evenly spaced from each other, as the soap provides. Also, the pairing of the yellow and red is a perfect match because it doesn’t take over from each other but complement each other. The listing of the ingredients is easy to read with the size of the font size is a great choice. The message is clear and understandable. There is a good amount of space sizing of all the text on the bottle.

Another thing to note is that the white lettering also complements the red. Overall, the hand soap bottle is a good example of good typography. The displays on the soap bottle are evenly spaced, and it's eye-catching and super easy to read, especially when someone is buying soap and needs to grab something quickly. The type of hand soap is quick to read and grab.

Good Example

The picture I took of this lotion bottle I have in my bathroom is a good example of bad typography.

The first letter of “holiday treats” showed be capitalized because it should be a highlight of it being a limited-edition lotion. Also, the sentences that it’s in the middle the spacing feel close together and the more you look at it the words seem squished together and honestly feels overwhelming because of how close together it feels. Another thing to note is for the listing of ingredients also seems to be close together and the font is different style it’s not the same as the rest which is not necessity two have a funky font. Overall, this picture is a perfect example of bad typography due to the different font styles, having “holiday treats” lowercase instead of having it capitalize to showcase the product and the lettering space sizing.

Good Example

The first picture I took is a bag of chia I found in my kitchen. This is a good example of good typography. To start, the packaging is simple, easy to read, and has complementary colors that fit within each other. Another thing to note is that the font of the text is a clear, easy-to-read font, which is an important factor when it comes to shopping, especially for people who are in and out of the grocery store. The letter space is even, and everything lines up perfectly. Nothing is jumbled up or squished together. Even the nutritional facts are easy to read as well. The logo of the brand is simple and unique, but not overpowering with the use of lots of different fonts. Only “house” is in a signature type font and left “Delights” in a simple font, but capitalized, and a thing to note as well is that the logo is not taking over the packaging, but instead it is in a box with a pink color and white font, which is a great example of good typography. Overall, this is a good example of typography. This package displays everything evenly and has no points to point to because of how everything is laid out evenly and not all over the place.

Bad Example

This picture I took is another bag of chia I found in my kitchen. This is a good example of bad typography. To start, the look of the packaging is overwhelming. A lot is going on. It looks jumbled up and overwhelming to the eye. A lot is going on with the background, with a mountain type, but all different shades of yellow and orange, which complement each other, but not for this packaging. The text is bold and in black with an outline of yellow, which doesn’t help because it’s just overwhelming to read. The letter space and space are too close together that which makes it too much. There are also too many words going on. The logo is small and not in the middle where it’s supposed to be; it’s on the side, and then “Organic Chia” in the middle. There is no need for that.

Overall, this is a good example of bad typography. The viewpoint is overwhelming. A lot is going on with the text and color, as well as adding a box with other information. In other words, this packaging is overflowing with too much text.

Good Example

I saw this flyer on my going into the library. This is a good example of good typography. The overview of the flyer is simple, easy to read. It has two colors, green and white, which is great because having more colors can be too much. All the text is spaced evenly. The title is easy to read; it’s in green bold text. The date is also in bold to tell people when it’s going to be. There are not a lot of bullet points, which is great. It has three sections to show what you’ll be learning, and bolded the text in each bullet point to show what you’ll be gaining from this event. The messages are clear and understandable. The image on the side of the flyer is a simple picture, which is good because having too many images going on can be too much. The flyer is eye-catching because it’s simple, and when I was on my way, it caught my eye. Another thing to note is that the font choose is great because it’s easy to read and simple compared to other fonts. Overall, this flyer is a good example of typography because it’s simple, stands out, and everything is even.

Bad Example

This picture I took. I saw this flyer in my class. This is an example of bad typography. To begin with, there is so much going on, not only with the background of the flyer, but different fonts and a lot of text going on which is overwhelming. Another thing to note is that the 20 countries are noted at the bottom in white text, but it is also the background as well, just with less opacity and a giant compass.

The “Study Abroad” is readable but needs to be bold to stand out. Also, there are more than two colors in the flyer, which is overwhelming. Just the overview of the flyer is overwhelming to look at.

Then, on what they offer, it’s listed next to each other, which is not good. It would have been better if they were bullet-pointed under each other and had at least two to three rows of because it would be quick and easy to read compared to what they have it like. Another thing to point the name of the college should have been on the top right corner instead of being in the middle. Overall, this is a good example of bad typography. It’s overwhelming, so much going on and not eye-catching.

Good Example

This picture I took of this sign on my way to class on Thursday. It’s a good example of good typography. To start, the overview of the layout is simple and easy to read. The colors blue and white complement each other. The lettering of the text is laid out evenly. Its font is sans-serif, which is a good choice because the message is quick to read, especially on the way to class, and it's eye-catching. All the letter spaces are even out, as well there are no big spaces or small spaces, just about the right amount of space. It’s not a distraction for the eyes. Another thing to note is that “student health clinic” is in bold to indicate where to go when a student is sick and to whom to reach out. Also, it’s great that the phone number and the UWF website are on two separate rounded rectangles, which is great because it’s there for students to call, etc. Overall, this is a good example of good typography. The sign is simple and clean. It is easy to read, and the font is super simple as well. The color choices are compatible and eye-catching, and the message is clear and understandable.

Bad Example

This picture I took is a jar of grape jam I found in my parents’ kitchen. This is a good example of bad typography. To start, there is so much going on, too much text jumbled up together, that it seems all over the place. The space between letters is not spaced out, but is kind of close together, making the overview of the bottle feel like so much is going on. It would have been great if the text of the ingredients were next not text to each other, just because there is so much going on. It would have been better if the ingredients were listed going down because it would be quicker to read and overview. I would say for the smaller text, “More than just the partner to your peanut butter,” it would have been better if the color of the text were white, just so it can be bolder to read just because it blends in with the purple background and larger text. Overall, this is a good example of bad typography. This product has too much going on, especially with different colors like the purples and black text. It would be best to keep it simple

Initial Typographic Pairings: Week 10

Good Example

The first example of good typography is a flyer that I saw on my way to the library. The overview of the flyer is eye-catching, and a simple layout that is easy to read and understand. The font for “Paws & Play” is a sans-serif font, which is perfect because the simplicity of it is what makes it noticeable to read. Another thing to note is that the color choice for the text is a perfect green, and the outline of the text is white to express that it’s going to be a fun event. As for the rest of the text on the flyer, sticking to white makes it readable. The color choice for the flyer is perfect; it shows the UWF colors with the different shades of blues, with that bit of green on it. The letter spacing for each text is laid layout evenly, as well as the size of the font, which makes the message clear and understandable.

Overall, the flyer is a good example of good typography. Its layout is easy to read and understand.

Initial Typographic Pairings: Week 10

Bad Example

This picture I took of this cleaning product I found in my house is a good example of bad typography. To start, just the overlay layout is all over the place. Everything is so close and jumbled together. The letter spacing is semi-close together, making it look crazy. There are so many bullet points that it was just better off if there were at least 3-6 points and not 18 points. Or another example would have been if the bullet points were in the back instead of the front. Just cause the font layout would have been cleaner and a simpler outlook. Also, the warning box should be in the back because it’s taking so much space, or it would have been better if it were smaller on one side.

The sizing of text would be a small size or a better outlook as well. Overall, this is a good example of bad typography. It’s overwhelming; there is so much going on that is overwhelming and not eye-catching at all. The letter and space sizing are close together, making it squished and jumbled.

For a cleaning product, it’s best to have a clean, simple layout for a better outlook.

Reaseach e

For my research, my inspiration was Landscape Magazine, especially the outdoor and photography magazines.

Just cause usually many stick to portrait style magazines or books. So, I wanted to go outside the box and create something different that you don’t see every day. I plan to have a table of contents. Then, each page has good and bad typography from each week, and on the side of each image, the text on the side. Then do the same for the revision of the typography part as well. The artist statement is followed by a project reflection. I was thinking about having the font type Times New Roman and for the Name of each page section in Bold Times New Roman. Just to keep it simple and easy to read.
