Architecture Department Building Complex
| Studio, Classrooms, and Dormitory |
HIAA0190 Advanced Design Studio, Brown University
Date: Fall 2022
Instructor: Julian von der Schulenburg
TA: Kaito Ran
Goal:
Design an architecture school with student dormitories. Inspired by actual events of potentially expanding the architecture department at Brown University, the studio proposes a new building across from the List Art Center designed by Philip Johnson in Providence.
Program: Includes a hybrid mix of educational spaces, commercial, amenities, and student dormitories.
Site Analysis
This potential site is located on a slope at College Hill in Providence, RI. This slanted typography presents challenging difficulties but offers us the opportunity to design creatively that incorporate the hill into our design.

GROUND FLOOR
From the ground floor spaces are divided into three segways. One leads to dormitory/living spaces; one leads to educational/learning spaces; one leads to the courtyard. These three components are interconnected by luxurious green spaces, outdoor cafes, and playgrounds.
Program Diagram
BASEMENT
The primary space for studio/ workshop working. The fluidity of the indoor plan and the seemingly seamless relation of the outdoor courtyard and indoor space provide the opitimal environment for hands-on working.
Mid Floor (Educational + Residential)
An example of one of the middle floors. The left structure is primarily composed of dormitories while the right building is comprised of lecture halls, small seminar classrooms, and lounges.
TOP EDUCATIONAL FLOOR
The highest floor, where the two structures meet each other, are primarly educational areas, classrooms, and library. Some areas are carved out for outdoor exposures. The interchanging of indoor and outdoor spaces gives breathing spaces to the otherwise super-imposing structure.
Case Study: Casa da Musica

(A) Diagram Sequence
Develop a sequence of 3-dimensional diagrams which explain and clarify the evolution of the design through a retroactive “unpacking”.
The most notable detail in Casa da Musica is the undulated glass. Undulated glass exhibits high reflectivity, this optical behavior allows great directional and intensity variation with its curvatures. Hence, the undulated glass facade of Casa da Musica is not only a choice of detail but a detail that embodies spirituality. Its dispersive light effects are capable of producing and enriching dynamic visual effects. Casa da Musica makes its space lively and interesting through construction details, namely through the choice of using undulated glass for auditorium openings.

Temporary Shelter Design
Rebuild Ukraine with the Focus on the Establishment of Temporary Shelter During Crisis
Date: Summer 2022
Personal Project
Goal
Most if not all of the temporary housing materials should be either recyclable or reusable for the reconstruction of houses after the war to maximize the potential of valuable yet scarce resources.
They should be easy to deconstruct, install, and move, meaning simple yet effective in design.
Site
Utilize schools and other public facilities as a larger base to build temporary shelters.
Program Diagram
(C) Essential Components of the Temporary Shelter:
Kitchen/Dining Space (SEMI-PRIVATE & PUBLIC): The appropriate and logical place to be semi-public and shared by a small community (a common place to eat, converse, and support one another).
Bathroom (A SEPARATE UNIT): For sanitary reasons, it should not be placed in a private area with sleeping space, since every modular room is comprised of only one room. The communal bathrooms will be a separate and independent unit.
Bedroom/Sleeping Area (PRIVATE): Should be PRIVATE so that residents still have a place to retrieve or to be alone. Will be one-two room per family, depending on family sizes.
Library/Gathering Space (PUBLIC): Children should have a place to hang around. A library or a common reading space is a good place to do so. The public space where people can support each other; will be shared by a larger community rather than 2-3 families.
The Design of the Modular Unit
Main Concept: 3 walls instead of 4 walls (triangular design; from layout, room shape, to furniture)
*Easier to destruct and reinstall
*The strongest in terms of structure
*Less space, but can be compensated by public spaces
*Utilize fewer materials per unit, thus ensuring/maximizing temporary housing modules for the largest amount of displaced people possible.
(E) Materials
According to the level of publicity, some will require enclosure on top (private bedrooms and bathrooms) and some will not (semi-private/public common dining areas); materials will also change accordingly.
Main materials: Papers/fabric as room divisional walls Light aluminum pipes as the structure skeleton Doors are liftable fabric
Architectural Fantasy
Inspired by the film set of the film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”, the conceptual model captures the constuctivist approach to architecture, which emphasizes the boldness of forms over mere functionality and subjective aesthetics

Brief:
The practice of drawing is inseparable from the processes of architecture and design. Thinking through making and thinking through media avail a critical space of seeing, understanding, evaluating and reflecting.
Goals:
• Develop a material approach and light to architectural representation.
• Employ analog, digital and hybrid techniques for a layered, evocative drawing.
• Work critically through media and find the appropriate tools and techniques.
Lightroom: Photo model
Working with large-scale paper models, understand the relationship between physical space and its two-dimensional representation in a photograph. The physical space of the all-white toned model is understood through its corners, ‘drawn’ by light and shadow. The photo of the model becomes an abstract ‘wireframe’, a two-dimensional representation of the space.
