Director’s Message

You will soon be joining ship as an engine/ deck apprentice.

This is the beginning of an illustrious career at sea. You will learn that an officer, to be effective, must be a leader, and your leadership is based on your own example and the respect men freely give you. You must be able to show the men how to do the job. You must know how much you can rightly expect one day from the team under you. That is why, during your cadetship you will do all the jobs, which, some day, men will do under your orders.

One of the fundamental requirements for the control of a ship's crew and for the management of the ship is discipline.

Primarily, the word means prompt and will ing submission to the orders of those in au thority over you. However, you share the re sponsibility for the safety and maintenance of :the ship. Discipline also includes respect and courtesy towards your officers, and tolerance for another person's point of view.

Punctuality - this is another trait of discipline. The whole organization of a ship may be upset by the tardiness of a sin gle person. To be late or casual about your duty is a common source of irritation to oth ers and a waste of time for everybody. Habitual tardiness disqualifies a man from most positions of responsibility.

Its better to be too early rather than too late for your appointment.

You must carefully cultivate cleanliness and hygiene. In the close confines of a ship this is particularly important. You should be careful to keep your clothes clean, especially your uniform and underclothes. You should learn to do a little washing on your own account in order that you may always have a change of clean underclothes handy. You should be equally careful to see that you keep your quarters regularly cleaned out and in an orderly and tidy condition.

Now, something should be said about your relations with the lower rank ratings. If you go about it in the right way there is so much in the ship that they will teach you. They have much more practical knowledge about the daily scheduled work on board, even if you may have undergone previous technical training. You will prob ably join with them in your daily work, which for some time will be the same as theirs.

Your attitude to them should always be civil and courteous and thoroughly professional. As you make practical progress in your sea manship, senior officers will entrust you with some degree of responsibility. Learn to be tactful and discreet and there should be no difficulty in finding your right equation with the crew.:-Watch always the way in which your senior officers, handle the crew. This is the most difficult thing you have to learn. By observing them sometimes you would even learn and get tips on what not to do.

Knowing your job means know ing your ship thoroughly.

Keep a notebook to jot down what you learn about operation of various machineries and maintenance of various parts and make frequent sketches Never be afraid to ask questions about her or anything to do with her. You should soon get to know the various parts, machineries and related intricases. You will do this much better by going to look at the various parts before reading about them in a book. When the ship is in dry dock make the most of the opportunities to examine her huil and under. water parts.

Safety is the most paramount concern on board. Be cautious and vigi lant about safety and make preservation of environment your habit. The environ ment is of primary global concern and your responsibility is to take care that neither you nor any action from others around you pol lute the pristine sea and air.

When you get an opportunity to step ashore in any port, ensure you abide by the rule of the land together with the code of ethics of the merchant navy profession you are in.

Personal safety as well as safety of those around you is part of your responsi bility as well.

Take pride in your uniform and keep it clean and tidy.

Showing respect to a uniform goes with showing respect to the the profession and associated job.

Honesty and truthfulness - two hallmarks of character you could not ig nore if you are to become a competent and respected officer. Your conduct must always be above suspicion and an example to your crew. Only in this way can you expect the same high standard from the crew. If you are to be a trusted Marine Officer only the most rigid personal integrity, to yourself as to others, should be your standard.

Lastly, you cannot learn to be a seaman except at sea. A seaman is one of the few people who derive his fundamental education from direct contact with nature. He cannot possibly leam to understand the ways of the sea and the combined effects of sea and weather upon a ship except by long and intelligent obser vation from the deck of a ship.

No classroom teaching can take the place of actual expe rience of the endlessly varying situations, which a seaman has to anticipate and to meet.
