HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE_

CRNI SNIJEG THE REPORT “Crni snijeg” which means “black snow” is composed of two words whose aim is to remember and to recreate a significant moment during the war in Sarajevo, in particular starting from the night between 24th and 25th August 1992, at the very beginning of the Balcan war. That night the National Library known as Vijecnica, one of the most symbolic building of the city, was burned and for long days the streets of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina were filled with burnt pieces of pages that came out from the almost destroyed roof of the library.

Pieces of ash flew through the city from that building that lost almost of all its content and that seemed like some kind of fireplace, spreading words in the city and, like someone metaphorically claimed, diffusing culture imagining the most famous characters in world literature, but not only, interacting with a surreal context around them.

This represents the main suggestion, conceived by the poet Goran Simic who lived firsthand those dramatic moments, which the monument proposal want to evoke and share in order to remember that dramatic event hardly erasable from the memories of the citizens.

The context is surely indispensable because without it the symbolic value of the monument would be lost together with the meaning of the work itself. For this essentials reasons the location has to have a specific meaning and purpose. Sarajevo is a consequent choice, the perfect place for a monument which tells a part of its recent history, whose signs are still visible nowadays all around the city. In particular the place chosen is a public area located in front of the National Library across the river Miljacka which cross all the city.

The area is located in the eastern part of the city, near the historic centre called Bašcaršija, built in the ottoman period, and it is identified by a square from which is clearly visible the old town area and the National Library too.

The height of the monument does not exceeded that of the surrounding buildings being therefore able in one hand to fit in the context without breaking down the urban pattern and in the other hand, standing in a free space, to be noticed and seen from the main surrounding roads. The expression of the shape represents, as a matter of fact, a simple cover in which take place and time. It is an easy element to recognize just like a symbol which often is the only thing that remains.

The reference of the monument is so very obvious because the connection to the meaning is directly driven by the visual perception. In fact, you can have a view on the library also being within the monument. Therefore the significance connection is explicit and do not needs any kind of words to be further described, in order to explain its meaning to the visitors, but it is all visualized to a few components that commemorate, all the rest is left on suggestion. Thus the shape expression is very abstract at first and even mute.

The structure is a shell positioned not parallel respect to the sides that surround it in order to intrigue passers and attracts them in the inside of the monument where it all happens. It could be interpreted like a sort of a ruin, which maybe derives directly from the library, because they represent the best example elements used for remembering.

The two external facades are made of punctured corten steel with an addition of glass on the top so as to allow the light to enter in the inside space, where facades assume a different colorization to produce a diverse more comforting ambience. Another interpretation that may be given is that the external elements represent a sort of protection , a cover or even a book. Who among us had never find protection inside a book in order to forget or to detached from the reality?

The real answer in the category of this special architectures called monuments is that interpretation is subjective and commemoration is not forced but shared and then there is a free choice of explanation. That is also the reason why there are not any kind of ornament, it is all based on suggestions and emotions.

The base of the internal area is made of glass which cover another one, positioned below, with the purpose to make feel the emptiness of the cultural loss, suffered those days, which will not be able to fill anymore. Looking up from the inside, black shiny pieces are suspended in the air recreating the “black snow” episode, just in front of a building that lived that event first. tLight has a fundamental rule in the process of creating that unique moment, in fact is the principal material used in monumental commemoration to suggest, it is something that you see but it is not there, just like the hypothetical pages of a book that are missing or nevertheless cannot be touched by the people or moreover read. But they are remembered from light also through the reflections by the black floating peaces and in general by the walkable glass base below, making the whole even more metaphorical but compatible with an abstract monument like this one.

Sunlight can be useful to observe the “black snow” but just for few moments per day, because of the natural cycle of the light. Instead, during the night, thanks to the installation of artificial lightning, commemoration will assume a monumentalized effect owing to the achievement of a special atmosphere due to an unique feel and sensitiveness for a more intimate and then more suggestive relation with the build and with that single episode full of emotions that somebody think should be remember, shared and not forgotten.
