THIS issue definitely has the theme of new beginnings. Spring is a time for new growth and things coming to life again and much of the content in this issue is about just that – new growth for Arundel and new people making things happen.

The Arundel Project consultation which happened last Autumn is yielding some exciting new initiatives and opportunities for the town. The Castle’s agreement to open the gate at the top of the High Street after many years of closure (see Page 6) is testament to the effect of the consultations conclusions. The output from those meetings is outlined on Pages 28 and 29. More detailed feedback will be presented at the Town Debrief on April 1st at 7.00pm in the Town Hall.

Even if you didn’t take part last year come along now and see what residents consider important and what can be done to action their suggestions.

One such new initiative is the work being done to establish the Arundel Bee Project. The idea came from Nick Field and, as he explains in our feature on Pages 19 and 20, everyone can be involved and help Arundel win the title of ‘The UK’s First Bee Friendly Town’.

This issue has a new feature starting entitled News from the Norfolk Estate (Page 41). Giving residents an update of what is happening on the Estate and in the Castle, this was something that emerged during discussions with the Norfolk family and their Estate Managers as part of the Arundel Project process.

It is fair to say that Arundel’s Chamber of Commerce was in decline last year, but it is now being revitalised by a new, enthusiastic committee. Similarly, it is wonderful to hear that the Festival Committee is up and running and planning to make this year’s event a success from everyone’s perspective. A more detailed outline of both developments is on Page 11.

As always there are new faces in town and our MP, Andrew Griffith, is one of them. I met him in February and the profile (Page 12) gives an insight into his background, career to date and current thinking about the issues which are important to Arundel.

Another relative newcomer is Canon Fr. David Parmiter who is featured in Oliver Hawkins profile on Page 24. Canon David arrived at the Cathedral late last year to replace Dean Tim Madeley. He will undoubtedly be making changes at the Cathedral in time.

Town Arundel Castle Opens High Street Gate

A decision has been taken by the Arundel Castle management team to re-open the gate at the top of the High Street so that departing visitors can emerge straight into the town. Its closure over 10 years ago has long been blamed by businesses in the town for a decline in numbers of visitors and the knock-on adverse effect on their turnover.

The announcement was made at the Annual General Meeting of the revamped Chamber of Commerce held at Arundel Museum on 6th February (see an account on Page ). It was greeted with loud applause and cheering from Chamber members. Stephen Manion, Manager of the Castle, who made the announcement said ‘We have been discussing the possibility of opening the High Street gate as an exit for some time.

My involvement over the last year in the Arundel Project, particularly its consultations with businesses and residents, demonstrated to us the importance to the town of opening the gate, which we will do for a trial period this season.’

Affordable Housing Survey THE Arundel Community Land Trust, with support from Arundel Town Council is undertaking a Housing Needs Survey to determine the extent and nature of affordable housing need in the parish, updating a similar survey done in 2012. The questionnaire is in two parts. The first part seeks views from every household about housing. The second part is for households or individuals who consider themselves to be ‘in need’ of affordable housing. A summary report of the overall findings of the survey will be used by the CLT and the Town Council.

The survey is being administered by Action in rural 6

Sussex, an independent organisation that works to support rural communities across East and West Sussex. The survey forms are gathered and analysed independently with all information kept completely confidential. No personal information is shared with the Town Council, Community Land Trust, Local Authority or any other third party.

Arundel CLT has been formed to manage the delivery of affordable homes for Arundel. It also has powers to develop other community facilities. The first project for the CLT is to work with The Norfolk Estate and a Registered Provider of Housing on the development of a mix of residential homes, a community facilities and links to public rights of way/green infrastructure network.

Littlehampton Shopmobility A REGISTERED charity, Shopmobility’s Patron is the Duchess of Norfolk. With branches in Bognor, Worthing and Littlehampton they cover a significant area within West Sussex.

For Arundel residents who need help with their mobility, Littlehampton Shopmobility may well provide solutions. They hire out powered scooters, walkers and wheelchairs very reasonably – for example to hire a wheelchair from 10.00am to 4.00pm is £5. They also offer a very maintenance service for people who own their own equipment. You can also buy equipment through them – they were the source of Arundel Surgery’s new wheelchair.

Mymingo New Technology Start-Up Launches in Arundel DO you feel lost when talking about technology and feel that people who know about it talk a different language? Ben Stacey, who lives in Torton Hill, may well have the answer for you. He built his first website at 16 and sold his first database the following year. He has now launched a new business to offer help and support to anyone who feels out of their depth or lacks the understanding to take on new technology.

Diamond Wedding Congratulations ON December 29th last year Eddie and Gwen Watt celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. The couple got engaged on a visit to Edinburgh Castle and married in Worthing Registry Office. They say the secret of their 60 years together is ‘giving and sharing’. They have two children, Gary and Sarah, and three grandchildren. Our picture above shows them with their card from the Queen.

Great news from Arundel Lido YOU may remember we ran an appeal for donations towards the cost of much needed new changing huts at Arundel Lido. Well they have successfully raised over £34,000 to pay for new changing huts and a toddler play area. Their thanks go to The Duke of Norfolk and Earl of Arundel who kindly donated £5,000 each, WSCC who contributed £1,000 and to the generosity of 55 backers from the community who responded to their crowdfunding campaign.

Arundel Lido would also like to thank all its supporters and suppliers, Roundstone Bespoke and Sovereign Playgrounds who will install this no-maintenance build and play area ready for the start of the 2020 season.

Brooklands Barn Events and Retreats

Arundel Has A PCSO IN November last year Sussex Police reintroduced area coverage for Police Community Support Officers having withdrawn this in 2016. The idea is to rebuild connections with the community and to provide a consistent contact for the public, as well as to provide a visible policing presence in each area of the county.

PCSOs will be working with councils and partner agencies to identify local problems and to deal with them accordingly.

Arundel’s PCSO, Ollie Smith, has been in post covering Arundel and Courtwick since November and has been in and around the town during the course of his duties since this time. When they are not responding to incidents and assisting with emergencies, PCSOs main areas of responsibility are: dealing with antisocial behaviour including driving related offences,

the community and congregation of the Church. A wonderful traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimming was enjoyed by all.

Arundel Tidal Defences Scheme Update From the Environment Agency IMPROVEMENT works in Arundel will better protect around 130 properties from tidal flooding. These include construction works to strengthen the river wall at Fitzalan Road which have started and will continue as planned. British Red Cross Celebrates 150 Years THE British Red Cross has been helping millions of people in the UK and around the world get support when crisis strikes for 150 years this year.

by Swiss businessman Henry Dunant. He witnessed the Battle of Solferino in 1859 and proposed creating national relief societies, made up of volunteers, trained in peacetime to provide neutral and impartial help to relieve suffering in times of war. In response to these ideas, a committee (which later became the International Committee of the Red Cross) was established in Geneva. The founding charter of the Red Cross was drawn up in 1863. Dunant also proposed that countries adopt an international agreement, which would recognise the status of medical services and of the wounded on the battlefield. This agreement – the original Geneva Convention – was adopted in 1864.

When war broke out between France and Prussia in July 1870, Colonel Loyd-Lindsay (later Lord Wantage of Lockinge) wrote a letter to The Times. He called for a National Society to be formed in Britain just like in other European countries. On 4 August 1870, a public meeting was held in London and a resolution passed: The British Red Cross Society, incorporated by royal Charter 1908, is a charity registered in England and Wales (220949), Scotland (SCO37738) and Isle of Man (0752)

STOP PRESS! COMMUNITY CLEAN UP DAY

Arundel is joining in The Great British Spring Clean with a Community Clean Up Day on Saturday the 18th of April. This is a fantastic opportunity for local residents to get involved and help give their town a good old spring clean. If you want to get involved there are lots of ways to register your interest, you can email admin@ arundeltowncouncil.gov.uk, call the Town Council Office on 01903 680658, pop into the Town Hall Mon-Fri between 9.00am-1.00pm and ask to speak to Aby or just turn up on the day! ‘a National Society be formed in this country for aiding sick and wounded soldiers in time of war and that the said Society be formed upon the rules laid down by the Geneva Convention of 1864.’ The Red Cross was born.

Today the organisation does a great deal more than help in times of war. Just some of the ways in which it helps are listed below.

• First Aid – Training anyone from young children upwards in various different first aid courses, including ones that cover mental health.

• Emergency response – 4th blue light (they were at Grenfell, Manchester Arena, London Bridge including the recent terror attack on the Bridge. They were in Essex when the 39 bodies were found in the lorry.)

• Independent living – this includes a home from hospital service and support for carers.

• International family tracing –helping people that have lost contact with friends and relatives, for whatever reason, try to find them.

• Refugee Services – we support refugee’s settle in an area by providing interpreters, orientation and contacts to help them seek asylum • Anti-People Trafficking The Red Cross will be collecting in Arundel at the events listed below. Do support their work in this anniversary year.

New Beginnings

Arundel Festival UNDER the chairmanship of Sharon Blaikie the Arundel Festival hit the ground running in the New Year with a new, larger committee and lots of ideas and energy. Change is in the air for two of Arundel’s institutions – both the Chamber of Commerce and the Festival have new, larger committees, with new ideas and energy.

Sounds from her studios in the High Street and has been involved in the Festival for many years as Music and Creative Director. A successful music industry collaborator, passionate coach to clients of all ages, professional musician, singer and compere she brings a wealth of experience to the event. Her approach she says is collaborative and committee driven. ‘I am thrilled to have recruited such a wonderful new committee of eight highly qualified professionals, mostly local residents, with a diverse range of expertise who like me are passionate to lay solid foundations now to ensure a sustainable, progressive and successful Festival for years to come.’

The committee have already started to make decisions about the feel of this year’s event. ‘We want to run a successful Festival of art, music and entertainment with minimal disruption to residents and with less road closures in previous years’. They want the Arundel Festival of Music and the Arts to provide a fully inclusive and immersive festival of art, music and entertainment to appeal to all ages and promote Arundel as a cultural centre and a wonderful place to live and visit.

The organisation has struggled in the last year, but it now has new energy and enthusiasm with a brand new committee also under the Chairmanship of Sharon Blaikie! Sharon explains their approach as follows: ‘It’s important that the ‘new look’ Chamber creates its own identity and becomes affiliated to the Sussex Chamber of Commerce to fully benefit as well as collaborate and share good practice with other successful Chambers.

There’s a broad spectrum of business sectors in Arundel to tap into for expertise.’

She continues- ‘I’ve enlisted a committee to represent different types of businesses in the town, to have the ‘official voice’ that communicates members issues

throughout the year by consulting with ADC, ATC, ACP, the highways etc. and has an effective method for relaying feedback to its members.’ At the meeting the Chamber’s aims were identified as Effective Communication, Diverse Connections, Prompt Delivery and Transparency throughout. A full year’s Calendar of Evening Networking Events and Breakfast Meetings has been published, hosted at various venues around town including the Castle. There will also be a new Facebook and Website presence.

A typical Tory party candidate? Gill Farquharson finds that first impressions can be misleading when she interviews Andrew Griffith, newly elected MP for Arundel and South Downs.

by Candlelight last year, one could have been forgiven for thinking typical ‘Tory boy’! In tweed cap and jacket, with classless accent and jolly, confident demeanour there was a whiff of David Cameron about him. But he is fact far from the archetype of a typical Tory party candidate. For a start he is very hard to research online – ‘yes I’m very shy online’ he laughs, ‘I have a very small digital footprint!’

This is made even more difficult because MP’s now are specifically warned against revealing unnecessary personal information in the wake of the Jo Cox murder and other incidents. The bare bones are that he is married to Barbara, who is a voluntary charity worker, and has two teenage children, a son and a daughter.

They divide their time between West Sussex, where they have lived for ten years, and London.

I loved law and my degree was fascinating,’ he says now ‘but, it was difficult and expensive to get to the Bar thirty years ago Born in 1971, Andrew grew up in South East London.

His father was an IT salesman and his mother stayed at home to look after him and his two younger brothers.

He attended St Mary and St Joseph’s Comprehensive in Sidcup. It was when he went to university, the first person in his family to do so, that his horizons started to expand rapidly.

Studying Law at Nottingham, he discovered the joys of debating societies and politics. ‘I loved law and my degree was fascinating,’ he says now ‘but, it was difficult and expensive to get to the Bar thirty years ago. I was also very interested in business so in the end I defaulted, as it were, into accountancy. There were a lot of big firms at that time offering the chance to do your articles while working. I chose to join Coopers and Lybrand, Deloittes which proved to be fabulously diverse – working with a paper mill one day and media companies the next.’ He enjoyed the business aspects of the role but disliked the narrow confines of auditing so, having qualified, he joined Rothschild Investment Bank in 1999. He was essentially a financial analyst involved in corporate disposal and acquisition, working with companies such as BT, Pearson International and ITN. He was then approached to join Sky which was an exciting prospect at the time. The company was ‘in its infancy and had only 3 million customers, but it was disruptive and making waves within the broadcast world.’ What Andrew only ever intended as a three- year

stint turned into a twenty-year career. Initially he had a new role combining business development with investor relations, which exposed him to the senior executives and inner workings of the company. ‘We started buying more businesses; the investor relations side got more sophisticated and then it entered the FTSE and my role just grew organically with the company’.

Andrew is surprisingly modest about his progress at Sky but within nine years he had become Chief Financial Officer, at the time the youngest CFO of a FTSE 100 company. He was then made Group Chief Operating Officer as well and continued in both roles for eight years.

Andrew’s political involvement started at Nottingham. He was there at a very fraught political time during the Miners’ Strike and his interest led to him becoming Chairman of the Conservatives at the university. He worked on John Major’s 1992 election campaign as a volunteer, his first experience of party-political campaigning. He got himself onto the Conservative Candidate List after the 1997 rout of the Conservatives at the General Election and admits ‘to be honest they would have taken anyone with a pulse!’. He was selected for Corby, where he was known to people because of his involvement while at university.

He unsuccessfully fought the seat twice while still working at Sky. First time in 2001 and then ‘the second time I fought the seat, in 2005, we already had two children and work was getting much more serious. When I joined the board of Sky in 2008, I had to decide which way to go because I couldn’t be politically active while on the board of the company which owned Sky News.’ He abandoned politics for his career and only really resurrected an active involvement in 2019.

Of his time at Sky, he now reflects: ‘I had a great innings at Sky. It had gone from 3million to 30million viewers, its value had gone from roughly £2bn to £48bn and the organisation had gone from UK to pan-European. I’d had a seat at the table in all those major decisions.’ The eventual purchase by Comcast in 2018 was a catalyst in Andrew’s decision to pursue another career. He agreed to stay to affect the bedding in of his team with the new owners but saw other attractive opportunities.

Roles such as the non-executive directorship he had had at JustEat since 2014 attracted him, as did joining a Think Tank. However, politics intervened in March 2019 when he was asked by contacts to meet with Boris Johnson and in turn agreed to introduce him to a few of his business contacts. When Johnson decided to run for Prime Minister, Andrew offered to help run his campaign. When Johnson was then elected in July, he became his Chief Business Adviser in Number 10 – a role he held until his own election in December.

In his Maiden Speech in Parliament, Andrew ticked several of the boxes which are important to the residents of Arundel. As far as the by-pass is concerned, 13

he says, ‘I am personally convinced of the need for a by-pass. I believe we need to divert the flow of traffic that comes through Arundel and the South Downs National Park.

In addition, the A27 is a strategic corridor which is important if we want a thriving South East economy.

If you look over to Lewes you can see that they have managed to get the A27 to work. However, I am very sensitive to the residents of Walberton and Binstead and have avoided going straight to the position my predecessor took.

Residents of these areas all have homes, livelihoods, family history and small businesses which are all important. Highways England are running the consultation and it’s their job to try and square the circle and they have the expertise to do so. I just hope they can do it in a way that reconciles the route and impacted areas as best they can. It is a very difficult situation and I probably weigh a bit more heavily on a lot of the concerns of some of the residents who would be affected by the by-pass routes rather than some of the protected woodland. But I haven’t moved to support a specific route. We do need to get on and do it now though – it’s just not good enough to say people should stop driving their cars overnight. If Highways England come back with a viable, preferred route and there is a shortfall in budget, I will argue for the necessary money.’

Although he hopes ‘to find a constituency office soon, it would be good to have a professional base as well as a personal one,’ at the moment he is holding surgeries all around the area. ‘I’m doing that unusual thing of actually listening to people first,’ he says with a smile. ‘I haven’t arrived fully fledged with lots of plans and a definitive view on everything. I’ve learned over the years that in any

new situation it is better to listen to as many facts and as many points of view as possible. So I’m doing the rounds at the moment on a ‘listen and learn’ exercise.’

‘We have so many opportunities to create ‘Brand West Sussex’. There is a huge potential for businesses, farming, farmers markets - we need to encourage local employment, make the most of our local economy and not just to build houses on it. That is why I am so keen on fast broadband– you can do so much more if we have fast rural broadband. It was the subject of my first parliamentary question. It can be done and is important across the whole of what can sometimes seem a disparate constituency.’

Flooding is another issue of concern to Andrew. ‘The one thing we shouldn’t do is aid and abet flooding by doing more culvertisation and concreting over the land so it isn’t the natural soakaway it should be. We must remember there is an aquifer beneath us and concrete is like putting clingfilm over a sponge. If we’re not careful there could be water shortages in our children’s lifetime. I want to be the greenest MP that Arundel and South Downs have ever had!’ he declares with a smile.

People are looking to Andrew to continue Nick Herbert’s efforts on the behalf of the River Road residents, and on the day, we met (24th January) he was hotfoot from a meeting with the Environment Agency. ‘The engineering solution hasn’t worked but I’ve been assured that the EA will not walk away. I’ve been through all the files and it’s 15

not an easy problem to fix. There aren’t enough facts yet for us to know what can be done but I am on the case.’

Andrew’s one to watch’ stuff – that’s the kiss of death. I love this area and I chose to live here 10 years ago– it lifts my heart when I drive around. I want to stay here Rumour has it that he is a star in the making but he denies the rumours. ‘I want to be a really good MP for the constituency. I’ve made this life shift and it’s not about being a government minister. You’ll find if you google me you will see all the ‘Andrew’s one to watch’ stuff – that’s the kiss of death. I love this area and I chose to live here 10 years ago– it lifts my heart when I drive around. I want to stay here.’

Which brings him to a subject very close to his heart – light pollution. ‘I’ve already launched a campaign for dark skies,’ he explains. ‘The South Downs is a Dark Sky reserve. We should develop sensitively and holistically when we build, and we must make sure we’re not encouraging light pollution. I want to encourage and

preserve our dark skies. But the development on the coastal plain is going to encroach right up to the foot of the Downs if we aren’t careful and then you won’t be able to see the night skies – or manage all the traffic flows!’

The Johnson government talks a lot about the levelling out of investment between the North and South.

Could that cause problems of underinvestment in the South? ‘In a word, yes! Point one as a local MP, I don’t think there’s a definition of fighting too hard to for your constituents. I don’t think that can do any harm.

Point two, it’s good for us as a group of West Sussex MP’s to work closely together and fight hard and we are doing that already. If we are going to put more of the infrastructure and economic activity in the North – both of which are incontrovertibly a good thing for the UK as a whole - then that also must be reflected in issues like the housing policy. If we’re going to increase employment in the North, then where we put new the housing policy must reflect that increase.’

Andrew certainly has lots of energy and is keen to get on with things. He uses a ‘standing up’ desk which he says is because ‘ I have a lot of energy and, if I stand up all the time, at the end of the day my mind and body are aligned in parallel.’ He also gets lots of exercise walking his two much-loved dogs, a labrador and a cocker spaniel – on that count alone he’ll fit into Arundel really well.

Bee Project

Nick Field is a local resident who, in his own words, ‘loves Arundel, has a newly discovered passion for beekeeping and therefore sees this as an opportunity to unite the two while providing a community project that will benefit the town, it’s people and the environment’. If you missed the Bee Project meeting held last month, this article gives an update and explains how you could get involved.

THERE can’t be many people who are unaware of the recent media coverage of the planet’s environmental problems. While some of the challenges may require major changes in lifestyles and some solutions will have to be driven by governments and world agencies, many have been thinking what we as individuals can do to help and it is partly with this in mind that The Arundel Bee Project has been launched.

Working with a variety of organisations and residents, the aim is for Arundel to be declared ‘The UK’s First Bee Friendly Town’. In order to achieve this - the title would be awarded by the charity The Bee Friendly Trust - the town will need to identify and create a number of mini

projects that will sit collectively under the title of The Arundel Bee Project. To get the ball rolling, over the last few months there have been numerous meetings with a wide range of organisations and individuals who have expressed an enthusiastic interest in being involved and who will hopefully go on to play a key role in the project.

Amongst these are Arundel Town Council, Arun District Council, West Sussex County Council, The Norfolk Estate, The Angmering Estate, Arundel Castle, The South Downs National Park, DEFRA, The Bee Friendly Trust, Ford Prison, Arundel Scouts, Arundel Gardens Association and The British Beekeepers Association. It is anticipated that other organisations will become involved as the project develops. However, it must be stressed that this is very much a community project, where individuals and groups are encouraged to come forward with ideas, suggestions and offers of help, rather than it being something driven just by large groups while everyone else sits back and feels excluded!

Why do this?

The project has several objectives. Firstly, on a local level, it will try to address the alarming decline in the number of pollinators in general and bees in particular over the last few years. While the reasons for this decline are still not totally understood - the use of 19

insecticides is suspected in playing a large part but there are almost certainly other factors - the potential results of this decline are very clear. It has been calculated that approximately a third of the food we eat will have been the end result of a process beginning with pollination.

To put it simply, without bees and other pollinators we would have major food supply problems - so preserving or increasing their numbers is ‘a good thing’.

Secondly, media coverage of the project will raise the profile of Arundel to the general public and therefore increase visitor numbers. The recent work being undertaken by The Arundel Project has highlighted the importance of tourists for the town’s traders. Like them or not, without visitors coming to our town and spending money, many of our shops, restaurants and pubs would struggle to survive. Initiatives that raise the profile of Arundel should help to raise the number of visitors to a level where we can all continue to enjoy the retail outlets that the town offers. With the environment at the forefront of many current news stories, a successful project should receive considerable media interest.

Thirdly, it is hoped that it will create a genuine community project that will bring a wide range of residents together to create something that will benefit us all. There has been more than enough division both nationally and locally over the last few years - a project that is owned by the people of the town, bringing them together to create something new and different, has surely got to be good thing?

Projects that have been discussed, and in some cases are already underway, include the formation of a Community Apiary (the name for a collection of beehives); displays of bee friendly flowers on the two main roundabouts on the A27 at Arundel and the verges between them; the creation of a Pollinators Garden on the land opposite the museum where the old public toilet block was before it was demolished ; educational programmes involving the two local schools and greatly increasing the floral displays within the town. This last item was something that came up repeatedly in the public meetings held by the Arundel Project during last Autumn.

For residents, the Community Apiary, which will be located next to the Community Orchard at Herington Field, will present the opportunity to learn more about bees and beekeeping, using a mixture of community and privately owned hives under the watchful eyes of experienced beekeepers and, for those that want to, the chance to become fully fledged beekeepers.

West Sussex County Council are very keen to develop the idea of wild flowers being used on the roundabouts and roadsides and are working closely with Arundel Town Council to develop plans. As with the Arundel Bee Project in general, this will need a long term plan as it will take several seasons for the plants to become fully established, but this has already been done very successfully by other authorities in the country and there is no reason why this can’t be replicated in Arundel.

I know that more than a few residents have despaired at the lack of use of Jubilee Gardens North (the aforementioned land opposite the museum) over the last couple of years, but with the `Town Council, Angmering Estate and The Castle all willing to become involved, the hope is for this to be developed into a Pollinators Garden, an area with plants and shrubs particularly attractive to pollinators, along with seating and display boards identifying the insects that will be present.

July will see Bee’s Needs Week, an annual event coordinated by DEFRA. This is when we anticipate the town receiving the award (did you know that the government has a Minister of Pollination?! Hopefully they will make the presentation), and initial plans are for the town to host a number of events to coincide with that, including talks, workshops, perhaps a market of bee related products, maybe an exhibition of bee art and whatever else people can come up with.

These are just a few of the ideas that have been mooted in the first few months of meetings and discussions. Hopefully there are residents who would like to drive their own related projects or just be involved generally. DEFRA have shown a lot of interest, as they feel that if together we can make a success of this, the concept of Bee Friendly Towns could be launched throughout the country in future yearsbut Arundel would be the first one.

How do you get involved?

Firstly, if you use social media, join The Arundel Bee Project Group on Facebook. There are already over 150 Arundel based individuals who have joined up, and this is a good place to have discussions, suggest ideas and hear all new developments. There will soon be a website for the project - and a public meeting is being planned to take place at the Town Hall in early spring, where you will be able to hear the latest developments, ask questions and most importantly - get involved!

Serena Gordon and the Hoffman Institute

The Hoffman Institute, run here in Arundel by ex-Bond Girl Serena Gordon, is celebrating its 25th anniversary in the UK this year. Gill Farquharson visited their offices on Arundel Quay to find out more about the personal development course, the Hoffman Process.

WHAT do the rapper Goldie, the actress Thandie Newton and GQ Editor Dylan Jones all have in common?

They have all experienced the Hoffman Process and are happy to lavish praise on the results publicly. The Process is a personal development retreat, sometimes described as a ‘psychological detox’ or according to Serena Gordon, co-founder of Hoffman in the UK, ‘like clearing all the unwanted clutter out of your garage.’

It is 25 years since Serena and her then husband, Tim Laurence, brought the Hoffman Process to the UK from the US and 20 years since it moved into Arundel.

Tim had been through the Hoffman Process and 22

subsequently worked for its creator, Bob Hoffman, in the US. Serena, also a graduate of the Process, remembers the early days as difficult. ‘The initial introduction wasn’t easy – just the idea of a week-long residential retreat made people quite suspicious. Without a website, we were reliant on word of mouth and reputation. From small beginnings however the number of courses grew and now we run 24 courses a year as well as a variety of other smaller workshops.’ Although divorced 10 years ago, Tim and Serena remain good friends. Serena runs the business in the UK and Tim lives overseas but enjoys teaching the Process in the UK as well as other Hoffman centres around the world.

Serena was born in London, the only child of parents who met at Oxford University. She boarded at Bryanston School in Dorset and on leaving school in 1983 successfully applied to RADA. ‘My contemporaries were Imogen Stubbs, Jane Horrocks, Ralph Fiennes, Ian Glen – we were considered a really strong year. My first job was at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 1985 playing Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Ralph Fiennes as

Peaseblossom.’ She thrived in the acting profession and recalls those days fondly. ‘I loved acting; I couldn’t believe I was being paid for something I loved to do so much!’

Her early career was mostly theatre appearing on stage with the likes of Stewart Grainger and Rex Harrison, and TV programmes such as Aristocrats, Midsommer Murders, The Shell Seekers, The Bill, Monarch of the Glen and many more. ‘One of the highlights of my acting career was in 1995 when I appeared in the James Bond film ‘Golden Eye’ with Piers Brosnan. We spent a couple of weeks up a mountain in Monte Carlo and Piers was the only person on set to know that I was secretly pregnant with my son Ben at the time!’

My first job was at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 1985 playing Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Ralph Fiennes as Peaseblossom She and Tim have two sons and in 1999 they moved to Burpham where the family made the most of the sporting and outdoor activities Arundel offers. The boys went to St Philips School, followed by Dorset House and then Brighton College. Ben, the eldest, now lives in Manchester, having read Biochemistry there. He works for an advertising agency marketing pharmaceutical products. His younger brother Alfie is at Bristol reading languages and runs his own student travel website.

She loves Arundel, the beautiful countryside and particularly their office location on the Quay, looking out over the river. She has lived in the area for over 25 years and, after stints in Maltravers Street and River Road, she and Adam, her husband of 7 years, now live in Walberton.

When Serena first moved here, she took an active part in the Festival, appearing in plays in the Castle with the acting company Tour de Force. They performed Henry V, Macbeth and Midsummer Night’s Dream, all involving the local community in the cast. She remembers these open-air performances as some of the most enjoyable experiences of her career.

Serena feels the Hoffman Process offers a similar sense of camaraderie - ‘it creates that same sort of “fellow traveller, we’re in this together” feeling. I love witnessing and experiencing the coming together of a community, harnessing all the creativity and seeing something positive come out of it.’

She says of the Process ‘I enjoy the sense of taking people on a journey. It’s a bit like asking someone in to help you clear your garage and getting rid of all the unwanted baggage you don’t need anymore – you create space in

your life for the things that are important.’

Most of the residential Hoffman courses are held in Florence House in Seaford, East Sussex with maximum of 24 on each course. ‘The Process is not for the faint hearted. The tools we teach are physical and emotional; Gestalt-based work, visualisations, meditations, physical cathartic exercises and journaling are just some of the techniques used. Bob Hoffman recognised how much suppressed emotion is held in our bodies – anxiety, depression, stress – all these repressed emotions have to come out somehow or, if we’re not careful, they will have a long-term impact on our health.’

All applicants go through preliminary screening with Hoffman’s trained team in Arundel – starting with a conversation about where you are in your life right now and where you feel stuck. During that conversation, they’ll begin to assess whether the course is right for the person right now. ‘We don’t need to persuade or pressure people into doing the Process,’ says Serena ‘It’s important that people only do this work when the timing is right.’

Looking at your early childhood and how you became who you are is the basis for the work. ‘We look at your behaviour patterns and your sense of self. How did you adapt to your surroundings as a child and what strategies did you use to get by? We ask where you get stressed, where you get triggered, where you are still living with regret, anger or sadness. A lot of us get to a point in our lives when we realise we have become a carbon copy of our parents. And if that’s okay, then don’t change a thing. But if it’s causing you unhappiness and stress then it’s worth understanding more about what’s underneath so you can improve your relationship with yourself and your family.’

Like most things, if you’re prepared to put in the work, you’ll be resourced for life.

Serena is very clear that the Hoffman is not a replacement for individual therapy. ‘It’s simply a personal development course. The techniques taught on the Process need regular practice to gain the maximum benefit. Like most things, if you’re prepared to put in the work, you’ll be resourced for life. You can start to make conscious choices about your future which make you feel better, feel more connected and at peace with yourself.

Like being in the perfect play with the perfect ending.’

WHEN The Bell featured a day in the life of the Arundel Cathedral Dean, Tim Madeley, we had no idea that he would be leaving us before the next issue was out. Tim is now enjoying a sabbatical year, studying church history in Oxford, and his formidable black German Shepherd and his fleet of London Black Cabs are no longer in evidence. Tim’s replacement is Canon David Parmiter (as in the Church of England Canons are drawn from senior clergy within the diocese) who has previously served as parish priest in Godalming. The appointment of parish priests in the Catholic Church are made by the Bishop alone, albeit with the advice of an Episcopal Council, moving priests around within the Diocese, with no fixed term of office. Arundel was fortunate, for example, to have had the greatly loved Tony Whale for eighteen years, but lengths of stay are seldom as long. The Church of England manages things rather differently.

Priests are free to apply for available posts, regardless of diocese, and the relevant Bishop will provide the parish with a shortlist of approved candidates. Thereafter it is up to the parish’s own Churchwardens to select their preferred applicant. Once a vicar is appointed he or she can expect to stay in post until retirement.

Fr David’s family was not Catholic, in fact it was only in his teens that he was baptized, but his parents sent him to Catholic schools in Brighton The first David Parmiter heard about a possible posting in Arundel was at a school gathering in his parish in Godalming, in a rather cryptic question from David Moth, the Bishop of Arundel & Brighton: ‘If I was to say Arundel, what would you say?’. Following a sharp intake of breath, and a considerable period of thought and prayer, Fr David felt happy to take on the challenge of a very large church in a very small parish, and the unique set of circumstances that surround the diocesan Cathedral. Whether the Bishop mentioned that it is possible to see the sea from the windows of the priest’s house is not recorded, but to a man born and bred in Brighton, with appreciation of working in a number of coastal parishes, this would have been something of an incentive.

Fr David’s family was not Catholic, in fact it was only in his teens that he was baptized, but his parents sent him to Catholic schools in Brighton, liking the ethos of St Bernadette’s primary school, and then of Cardinal Newman Comprehensive in Hove. Something about the atmosphere at school clearly worked for him, and at

David felt an increasingly strong call to the priesthood, an avenue he had first considered at school, and one that he could see as a ‘continuity of service’ with the work he had been involved in, rather than a complete break. fourteen he became a Catholic, followed in due course by his father and mother. Leaving Cardinal Newman after GCSEs David trained in personnel management at Brighton University, and settled into seventeen very happy years working for East Sussex County Council in Lewes. David regards his time there as enormously fruitful for his eventual vocation as a priest. East Sussex’s Human Resources department was responsible for around 25,000 individuals, operating in a very wide range of activities, and with local government reorganisation leading to the establishment of Brighton as a unitary authority there were numerous strategic as well as day-to-day issues to be dealt with. But David felt an increasingly strong call to the priesthood, an avenue he had first considered at school, and one that he could see as a ‘continuity of service’ with the work he had been involved in, rather than a complete break. At mass on Sunday watching the priest he says he felt ‘I could be doing that’. When he said to the parish priest ‘I think I may have a calling’ the priest replied ‘I think you may have, too’.

There followed a series of interviews and selection procedures, psychological assessments and what David describes as ‘trial by sherry’, being interrogated by the then Bishop Cormac Murphy-O’Connor in Storrington, all leading to six years at the English College in Rome.

The College, founded in the sixteenth century for the training of English and Welsh priests, provided a stimulating base at the centre of the Eternal City. As a seminarian there David may or may not have been aware that the splendid late seventeenth-century buildings had been funded by Philip Howard, third son of the Earl of Arundel, whose namesake had died for his faith in the Tower of London a hundred years before. He would certainly not have known that his career as a priest was to lead him to the Cathedral of St Philip Howard in Arundel. The English College not only provided a sound training for the priesthood, but also the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from all over Britain, to hear a succession of high-profile visiting speakers, and to make friends with people from all over the world, while breathing the history and culture of Rome.

Once ordained and returned to England David’s first post was at St. Joseph’s, Redhill and then the church of Our Lady of Ransom in Eastbourne, back by the sea.

Subsequent postings included Woking, and a brief stay at Egham, at the northern-most point in the Diocese, then back to the coast at Bexhill-on-Sea, and eventually to Godalming.

influential in North America. Much of the basis for the kind of renovation involved is associated with the Alpha movement, which had its origins in London with the Church of England, and Fr Mallon has been accused of ‘stealing it all from the Protestants’, a charge with which he is only too happy to concur. It will be interesting to see what kind of developments take place in Arundel, a town with a strong ecumenical tradition.

For the time being Canon David is busy finding his feet, having arrived at what was by chance a particularly hectic period, when he must have imagined the Parish spent its whole time drinking sparkling wine in the Cathedral Centre.

With things more settled now he can concentrate on the management of the parish, and the oversight of the Cathedral church. Meetings are already taking place in preparation for the Feast of Corpus Christi and the Carpet of Flowers, and there will be numerous other demands for his attention. He may possibly find time for his favorite activities, a walk on the beach, or an occasional game of golf back in Bexhill. We wish him every success in his new parish.

An Update on the Arundel Project LAST October over 200 Arundel residents got together at five resident meetings. Over 1700 suggestions and comments were posted during these consultations and the results have now been analysed. At the same time more than 100 businesses attended sessions focusing on their ideas and views. The resulting analysis gives a fascinating insight into where the town is now and what the future could look like.

Communication There is a lot going on in Arundel that people often don’t hear about. In this age of information overload, there is overwhelming demand for a single, dependable source for all Arundel news.

Residents want to know about events, clubs, community group activities, volunteer requests and opportunities, the Castle and Estates, plus day-to-day information like bin days, road closures and public consultations.

Residents, businesses and attractions all agree that Arundel should advertise its incredible beauty, history, heritage, and unique setting as a great place to visit.

Getting Around Arundel was not designed for cars, yet they now dominate our town. People are frustrated with parking and concerned about pedestrian safety - especially for young people getting around and travelling to school.

A Greener & Cleaner welcome We all love our beautiful town, and sharing it with friends and visitors, but we are embarrassed by our public toilets and annoyed about dog poo on our pavements. We want to show more civic pride and be more welcoming with: -

Residents want a Town plan for parking with pragmatic solutions that work for residents and visitors alike.

We should consider every parking space in town, time limits, charges and discount schemes for workers and regular users.

• thoughtful planting of the roundabouts, town centre and community spaces in our residential areas, including creating wildlife friendly habitats

We are lucky to have direct train access to London.

However local journeys to Chichester, Brighton and Littlehampton are a different story - all require changes and waiting around, making it difficult for our young people and Arundel’s workers to get about. Getting to the stations is also an issue. Top of the list is a safe foot/ cycle path from town to Ford station and a safe path to Arundel station without having to repeatedly cross the road. We want to make town generally more pedestrian and cycle friendly.

and restaurants, but our High Street must evolve and we need to encourage more people into town. Residents see an opportunity for more variety, including a wine bar, gastropub, and contemporary food options like organic, vegan, juice bars, street food etc. What we have now is too similar.

There is a belief that extending the Castle season, opening the top gate coupled with more consistent, reliable shop opening times would attract more customers onto the High Street.

Residents want more reasons to come into town and have ideas like grow the Farmers Market and add new markets, plus a programme of varied, smaller events across the year, involving some temporary pedestrianisation.

The Arundel Festival and Arundel by Candlelight are valued but need to evolve. As events become more important and complex, there is agreement that our town needs paid Town Management resource to support our volunteers and help make all this happen.

Gateway to the South downs National Park and Arun Valley There is a feeling that we don’t make the most of our wonderful setting - the South Downs, the River Arun, and our closeness to the sea. Residents want to get outdoors more and suggest improved access for walks and rides but also more social activities like parkrun, walking and cycling events for all abilities.

A “piste” map highlighting routes and difficulty levels, is one great idea.

Residents believe we should make much more of the river and Arun Valley, and become a great gateway to the South Downs National Park. This would attract visitors and create new business opportunities like boat/ kayak/bike hire and boost existing town businesses.

Making the most of our iconic buildings and facilities There is concern that some of our iconic buildings are falling into disrepair, due to lack of funding and use. The Victoria Institute, library, derelict barn by the roundabout, even the Town Hall, Lido and others would benefit Arundel more if they were improved and/or used more.

There are plenty of things we want! A community centre, gym, indoor sports hall, children’s nursery, and an indoor/covered event space for all-year-round activity. So, we need to get the owners/trustees round the table and thrash out an overall plan that matches our community needs with the right buildings.

Residents also think our town needs a high-end quality hotel, a good restaurant on the river, maybe a

“glampsite” and camper van facilities.

There is a feeling that landlords could be more engaged and accountable for how buildings are used and maintained. The McColl’s window was singled out as an ugly misfit in Arundel.

Building an action plan This review has identified fantastic opportunities for Arundel some of which are simpler to implement than others. Each will need funding and leadership to make it happen.

Some things are entirely within the gift of residents, businesses and Arundel Town Council to work on and deliver. Our Council has already adopted some ideas into their objectives for 20/21 which is a great start.

Getting the more complex things done requires a joinedup effort from different tiers of government (Arundel Town Council, Arun District Council, West Sussex County Council, our new MP Andrew Griffith) and landowners/ guardians such as the South Downs National Park, the Duke and the estates.

We now need to prioritise what needs to happen and mobilise the right people to get things done. In the coming months, we will share our findings with relevant officers from each of the above to raise awareness and ask for commitment to a collaborative action plan.

Arundel Town Council will need to play a leading role, but we must remember our town councillors are unpaid volunteers, many of whom have full-time jobs. So, other resident and business volunteers will also need to step forward to help if we are to deliver the big ideas.

Messages and Services from the Churches IT’S a great time of year for being optimistic and looking forward, in many respects better than the New Year when there are still some dark evenings ahead. But somehow it just doesn’t feel right making resolutions when we are four months in, so to speak. Resolutions, or sticking to them, are difficult anyway so it feels ok to give them a miss at springtime. Summer is just around the corner, so the holiday and party season beckons us to let our hair down. Although, a Prisoner Governor once told me about the words of advice he had given his two young sons as he waved them off on holiday together; ‘not too much letting down of hair, please.’ He should know. I guess we can’t dispense with resolution altogether even if some resolutions get thrown out at the end of the month of veganism and non-alcoholic drinks. Nothing wrong with either of those two things by the way.

To be resolute is to be ‘admirably purposeful and determined’ The Compact Oxford English Dictionary for Students tells me, even though its been a long time since I have been one of those – yes, I hang on to books too long. When faced with the Cross Jesus was resolute but his disciples fled, and they needed to be patched up again and given new strength and that is what I hope Easter will do for all of us. We who so often flee Christ’s Mandatum of Holy Thursday to love one another as He has loved us. As for the disciples, so I hope it is for us, that the resurrection of Jesus from the dead will patch us up and make us strong. Also, with the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to drive us out to witness to God’s love with proclamation on our lips, charity in our hearts and with good deeds in our hands.

The resurrection was not passive, and it didn’t make the disciples passive but instead made them active. It made them resolute, it made them ‘admirably purposeful and determined’ with God’s love.

In the Easter season can we too catch that spirit? It’s the spirit of Pentecost, the sending of the Holy Spirit to us to make us strong and which fulfils the Easter promise. Happy Easter.

CANON DAVID PARMITER Arundel Cathedral AS days go by and the memory of Christmas and Epiphany are slowly fading away; we are turning our eyes towards a very different liturgical season - Lent. For many of us it will be yet another opportunity to make a resolution or to pick up a spiritual discipline or practice, which will help us to better understand the depth of this holy time. Being mindful how often I fail to keep my New Year’s resolutions, a few years ago instead of making a new one for lent I decided to do something different; to spend this time with a Saint. Since then, every year I try to find a Saint and get to know him or her better in this forty-day period. I look at their life and story. I look at them through the

prism of art, poetry and tradition. I spend time reading about them as well as reading their writings, if there are any. I try to reflect on their life and their experience, as I would look at the world through their eyes.

This year I will be looking at the life of St Mary of Egypt. Born in a poor family in 4th century, she run away from home when she was only twelve, and lived in the great cosmopolitan city of Alexandria. She loved all joys life, wine and parties. She was constantly chasing after new adventures. Very quickly she became… a prostitute to make her living. One day when she was walking in the port of Alexandria in search of costumers, she saw a large group of pilgrims about to sail to the Holy Land, wishing to venerate the Holy Cross (discovered by St Helen in 326 AD). Mary thought that joining them will be a good business opportunity. Without any further hesitations she jumped on board and sailed with them. On arrival in Jerusalem, out of curiosity Mary joined the pilgrims from Alexandria on their journey to the church of the Holy Cross, but unlike them she could not step across the threshold into the church. She tried repeatedly, but each time invisible hands held her back.

Alone and frustrated in the courtyard Mary started weeping, realising that that was her dissolute life which prevented her from entering the church. She fell on her knees in repentance and tears, making a decision to change her life and follow Christ. When she opened her eyes, she saw the Holy Cross in front of her; and a mysterious voice that said “go to the desert across the Jordan river, and she obeyed…

This is only the beginning of her amazing story, I am looking forward to spending the whole 40 days of Lent in her company, looking at all the things she can teach me.

The story of St Mary of Egypt shows us that no matter how we start, and no matter what our plans and expectations are, the end of our journey can be surprisingly unexpected.

Her story Shows that God will always find his way not only to meet us, but also to touch our life and transform it. To bring us home safely. I pray that this time of Lent will be for all of us an opportunity to share the journey of faith with Saints who’ve gone before us. They’ve got so much to show us, to teach us, and they are more than willing to share their experience with us.

Jesus Remember me!

AFTER Jesus was led away to be crucified he was then nailed to the cruel cross which was lifted high as if Jesus was rejected by both earth and heaven. The crucifixion site was the place called the Skull or Golgotha.

Jesus cross was placed between two known criminals, one on his left and the other on his right. We might want to consider why Jesus was nailed to the cross, what crime had he committed? The answer is no crime what so ever. Jesus was sinless!

He was God’s Messiah, the Anointed One of God whom the

SPRING 2020 | The Bell Jews had been expecting for hundreds of years. Jesus knew who he was and he had already declared that ‘the Father and I are one’ (John 10:30). For someone to declare that he was God was considered blasphemy by the Religious authorities. So very much the charge against Jesus was that he claimed to be the King of the Jews!

Various leaders scoffed at Jesus, other cast lots to divide up his clothes. Soldiers mocked Jesus and said to him. ‘If you are the King of the Jews save yourself?’ One of the two criminals mocked Jesus and verbally abused him yet the other condemned and dying criminal had more faith than most of Jesus followers put together. He rebuked the other mocking and dying criminal for his deriding of Jesus. This dying criminal learnt the truth in his final moments that here was God in the flesh on the cross that was dying for sin – the sins of you and me! This criminal called for his co partner in crime to fear God. He called out, ‘we are being condemned justly for our evil deeds but this man Jesus has done nothing wrong’!

This man recognised who Jesus was and this being so he was repentant for his sinful ways. Then he said something stunning to Jesus, ‘Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom?’ Luke 23:42. Jesus response was equally amazing, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise’. The repentant criminal would know forgiveness of sin and the Lord’s salvation. This man looked to the Saviour dying next to him and showed great faith – awe inspiring faith. He saw beyond his present shame to coming glory of Heaven with Jesus!

PRAYER OF ST RICHARD OF CHICHESTER Richard was born in 1197 at Wyche, Worcestershire, he was educated at Oxford, Paris, and Bologna. He was appointed chancellor of Oxford University in 1235 and then chancellor to Edmund Rich, Archbishop of Canterbury. When King Henry III appointed Ralph Neville to the see of Chichester in 1244, Pope Boniface declared the nomination invalid and named Richard to the post, but Henry prevented him from entering his palace. Only after the king was threatened with excommunication was Richard able to take up his duties.

He insisted upon strict adherence to discipline among the clergy, aided the poor, and fearlessly denounced the corruption and vices of the contemporary Church and the royal court. He died at Dover, in 1253, in a home for poor priests.

Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us.

Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day.

The research goes back to the Norman Conquest, to the reign of Richard II, when the church was rebuilt, to the enormous number of Masons’ Marks and graffiti dating back to the earliest times and to the foundation of the College of the Holy Trinity, of which the Fitzalan Arundel Choirbook Mermaid Chapel now remains. The Town Council Newsletter Review 2018-2031. This means that it has been brought into legal force and forms part of the statutory Development Plan for Arundel, ADC and the South Downs National Park.

It now sits alongside the Local Plan and will be used when determining planning applications for Arundel.

Blastreat Appeal Remembrance Parade & Service A great day was had by all at Arundel’s Remembrance Parade & Service on Sunday the 10th of November, it was extremely well attended by local residents with the Clergy including Bishop Richard Moth of Arundel & Brighton in attendance. The parade was led by the Macebearer followed by the Town Clerk, Mayor, and Town Councillors.

Poems written by pupils from St Philips Catholic Primary School and Arundel CofE Primary School were read beautifully by the children. Following the Service all were invited along to Arundel Museum for refreshments and to view their World War I exhibition.

Community Clean Up Day ATC are planning a Community Clean Up Day on Saturday 18th April and need your help. If you are interested in volunteering to help give the town a good old spring clean please contact us on 01903 680658 or email admin@arundeltowncouncil.gov.uk to register your interest. Volunteers will meet at the Town Hall at 11am and all equipment will be provided along with tea and coffee.

2019 Community Awards On Thursday 5th December 2019 Mayor of Arundel, Councillor Wendy Eve, presented the fifth annual Arundel Community Award to David Wood for his tireless efforts keeping Arundel Lido open for the community, for his continued hard work with Project LEAP to extend the Lido’s open season and to deliver a brand-new community space and gym for the benefit of the community. Kyle Burton was presented with the Young Persons Commendation Award. Kyle was nominated by his Head Teacher Andrew Simpson for being a positive influence on others.

Arundel Farmers Market In April ATC is taking back responsibility for the Farmer’s Market. The Town Council would like to thank David Wood and the members of the committee for establishing the Farmers Market in our Town. We hope to continue their good work and look forward to working with the stall holders to ensure the Market continues to thrive in Arundel.

Neighbourhood Plan At ADC’s Full Council meeting of 15th January 2020, the Council resolved to ‘make’ the Arundel Neighbourhood Plan

On 20th December 2019 the Blastreat appeal by Renaissance Retirement Ltd against ADC’s refusal to grant planning permission for the development of a block of 46 sheltered apartments for the elderly was dismissed.

Following the inquiry the Planning Inspectorate David Wildsmith reached his decision and a full copy of the ‘Appeal Decision’ can be viewed at the Town Hall.

Town Council Grants It is always a pleasure to help our local community where we can and, as a result, we have approved several grants over the past months: St Wilfrid’s Hospice £1,234.76, Lifecentre £2,000.00 and the Chamber of Commerce £1,500.00.

Town Hall Events Our ever-popular Wedding Fayre will be held on Sunday 20th September 2020 11:00-3:00pm. It is a great opportunity for people to come and view our wonderful wedding/party venue for which Arundel Residents receive 15% off bookings.

Our monthly Cinema viewings have always proved popular and our recent addition of a children’s film didn’t disappoint with many local children attending a showing of Frozen 2 during the Christmas holidays. All upcoming films are listed on ATC’s website with tickets available from the Town Hall and we look forward to showing another children’s film in the Easter holidays.

Policing We continue to have monthly meetings with Sussex Police and as of December these are now with Arundel’s new PCSO Ollie Smith. The Arun and Chichester Prevention Team have changed the way they deploy PCSO‘s. This has been as a result of the investment opportunity provided by the precept increase, proposed

by Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne. Areas have been allocated PCSO numbers according to crime, deprivation and indices of need.

If you see an incident or are affected by crime, ALWAYS report it by calling 999 for urgent matters and 101 for non urgent matters. This ensures the incident is logged and a pattern of activities can be built up. The Town Council are also happy to take reports of any local crime to pass on at their monthly meetings with Sussex Police.

Mission (NOT) Impossible:

Arundel Town Council gears up for the future In their Victorian regalia, the Mayor, Town Clerk and Council have a visible and historic ceremonial role in the community. But underneath the surface they are working harder for the town than many people realise, and they have adopted some ambitious goals for the future. Here are their answers to some of the key questions as provided by Town Clerk, Carolyn Baynes.

The Bell: some people assume that the town council doesn’t do very much other than its ceremonial functions. Is that fair?

In the last six months we have championed what we believe is the best A27 solution for the town, worked to minimise the disruption and damage that will result from the vital flood defences, seen the Neighbourhood Plan through a successful referendum and succeeded in the planning appeal against the unwelcome development on the Blastreat site. Those are only the headline events. The council is better at doing things than it is about making them known.

The Bell: are you suggesting people don’t understand the town council’s role?

Most people over-estimate the council’s powers. Every service in the town, from waste collection to cutting the verges, is provided by either Arun District Council or West Sussex County Council. The only things for which the Town Council is directly responsible are the cobbled area in the High Street, the historic streetlights and the town hall, and for the periodic Neighbourhood Plan.

The Bell: that sounds quite limited……

In one sense, yes. However the daily task of the council is to lobby and liaise with Arun and West Sussex councils, to ensure that the services that we receive meet the needs of our Arundel community. That extends to many other bodies, including transport companies, the police, the Environmental Agency, the Highways Agency, and every other organisation that can contribute to our town.

Things take a long time. Six years ago the council increased the precept (our share of council tax) so that we could put £16,000 each year into a flood defence fund. The £80,000 we accumulated, together with an enormous amount of work by many Arundel people, including the council and its advisors, has led to an investment of £4.7m in tidal flood defences for our town. That’s quite a return! We have learned that there will be an indefinite further delay on the River Road part of the project because the Environment Agency have encountered technical issues in the river bed.

Arundel is blessed by having so many active voluntary groups. The council actively supports and encourages them, either by carefully considered financial grants, or by providing resources. For example, at present one of the council staff is actively involved in supporting the new Arundel Festival committee. The Council’s support can simply be providing organisations with a meeting place, a registered office address or advice. Most organisations, including the two Arundel primary schools, have their own ‘Link Councillor’ for this purpose.

Irrespective of its powers, the council can decide to take any other actions that it believes will benefit the town.

In April it is taking back responsibility for the Farmer’s Market, with the intention of developing the existing market with possible development of new seasonal markets across the year.

The Bell: That sounds exciting. What other plans are there for the future?

In May 2019 a new council was formed, with 7 new councillors joining 5 councillors who were continuing, and we also have a new Town Clerk, all under the experienced leadership of the Mayor, Wendy Eve. So it seemed appropriate for us to review our council mission and to set some tangible objectives for the next three years. It was a particularly good time to do this because the ‘Love Arundel’ conversations meant that we had some valuable new insight into the aspirations of our residents.

After a lot of debate, we honed our Mission Statement to a single sentence, which defines our overriding purpose and says what we believe we exist to do. We then identified the objectives which would help to carry out this mission. Some have already been started, most will entail working with voluntary groups or other statutory bodies, some will be done in a year and some will take years and be completed by our successors.

These objectives are challenging, and we have decided to recruit another member of staff to help us to bring these projects to fruition.

MISSION STATEMENT To work closely and creatively with the community to make Arundel a thriving town in which to live and work, and a great place to visit

OBJECTIVES ECONOMY Support the development of a thriving economy for the benefit of visitors and residents 1. Re-vitalize and increase participation at the Farmers Market 2. Protect and develop the use of the green spaces in the town 7. Establish a volunteer group for town improvements, such as grass verges, roundabouts, new planting and wildflower sowing

STATE OF THE TOWN Make Arundel a town to be proud of 8. Investigate alternative funding opportunities for our High Street and Market Place regeneration project 9. Implement the 2018-31 Neighbourhood Plan 10. Promote the history and the heritage of the town (“Arundel-much more than a great castle”) both for residents and visitors 11. Initiate bi-annual “Be Proud of in Arundel” cleaning and tidying days for the town

COMMUNITY Nurture the events and voluntary groups that make Arundel a special place to live 12. Ensure that Arundel’s events (including the Festival, Arundel by Candlelight, Carpet of Flowers, Bee Day) are optimised and made sustainable

TRAFFIC & TRANSPORT Make it easier for Arundel residents to get around 13. Campaign to get the best possible A27 outcome for Arundel, and avoid the through pass 14. Explore with the relevant statutory authorities the possibility of creating a lit, cycle path/footpath between Ford Station and Arundel, not on the riverbank 15. Develop a strategy for improving parking, for residents and visitors, in Arundel

HEALTH & WELL-BEING Improve the health and well-being of Arundel residents 16. In partnership with health professionals and relevant charities, make Arundel a dementia-friendly town 17. Promote guided walks through signposting and brochures, from the station to the South Downs 18. Maintain playgrounds and skateboard park in good condition

THE COUNCIL Make the Council work more effectively for the Arundel community 19. Review the ways that the council and its committees currently work to see if there are ways in which the council can be more efficient and effective 20. Build strong, regular communications with residents, so that they know what we are doing, and we know what they would like us to do 21. Develop the Town Hall usage so that it becomes a profit centre rather than a cost centre for residents 22. Identify the roles that need to be filled for the Town to flourish 23. My medical interest is sports science, diabetes and cardiology. My wife and I live in Tangmere, with our 13 year old son. I enjoy swimming, squash and tennis as well as snow and water skiing. I also enjoy travelling Dr Jacques Bosman and reading. My wife is a keen choir singer so I end up going to lots of concerts as well as being a member of St Nicholas church in Arundel.’

Hospital or Doctors appointment – How do I get there?

If you have no transport to get you to a hospital or doctors appointment The Arun Community Transport Service will take you for a small charge based on mileage. A registered charity service all the car drivers are volunteers. Ring 01903 792110 (ACT are keen to recruit drivers from Arundel so why not consider being a volunteer?). If you are on some forms of benefit you may be eligible to reimbursement for trips to hospital via the hospital cashiers – ask at the hospital for advice. If you are travelling frequently for cancer or kidney care then you may be able to use South East Ambulance non emergency transport at no charge, discuss this with your clinic or the surgery.

If you are travelling a long distance, frequently or having other challenges with your travel ASCA may be able to assist you with some or all of the costs. Ask your ACT driver for the leaflet and get a receipt or ask in the surgery or contact ASCA direct see contact information.

Fantastic Response to Christmas Fundraising for new Clinic Room Over Christmas ASCA members were busy fundraising so that we can equip a new clinic room at the surgery.

Following 2 separate raffles, Arundel by Candlelight and The Farmers Market, as well as the Name the Bear, competition at the Museum we met our target of £500.00.

We had amazing support from the traders of Arundel who donated a wonderful array of prizes, along with prizes donated by ASCA memebers and great pitches provide by the Candlelight team and Famers market, so thanks to

every one and to The Museum for hosting Name that Bear.

Also thanks to everyone who bought tickets. Together with donations earlier in the year we are nearly at the £2000.00 level, we hope to raise £8000.00 in all. We hope to have a list of equipment soon so that people could sponsor individual items.

News from the Norfolk Estate Ash Die Back Disease

Many of you who travel on the A284 towards Whiteways from Arundel will have noticed a great number of trees that have been felled. Sadly, this has become necessary due to Ash Die Back disease that has infected all Ash trees. The roadsides are particularly vulnerable as you will appreciate and take priority before we move on into the woods. Ash and Beech are the mainstay of the trees in this area given the chalk soil. At this present time any further planting of Ash will also become infected.

River Arun Currently, as you will have seen, the Environment Agency is carrying out flood defence work in the River Arun adjacent to River Road with the works compound being situation in Mill Road Overflow Car Park. This will be in place until July, which will cause short term inconvenience regarding parking but there will still be plenty of space available.

Flood defence has moved to the top of the agenda in many places and the Estate continues to engage with the Environment Agency and Network Rail to try and resolve future problems in relation to safeguarding Arundel.

Arundel Castle Keep

Winter is always a busy time in the castle and gardens, with restoration and conservation projects underway which require a considerable amount of disruption and a lot of scaffolding. This is also the time when we can implement improvements to the visitor experience, whether it is a new hands-on experience in the Gatehouse or a refurbished shop.

These last few weeks have been particularly interesting with our major works in the Keep, parts of which date back to the origins of the castle in 1068. For many years the surface on which visitors walked consisted of bark chippings. Over the years these rotted down to a compact compost, clogging the drains, causing floods and damaging the structure. Over the last twelve months, in association with the South Downs National Park and Historic England, a plan was developed to

resurface the Keep with York stone and Purbeck setts.

Bell Gardens of Worthing were commissioned to undertake the project and commenced with the first of many arduous tasks: removing tons of sodden woodchip and carrying it down steep steps by hand.

Phase two required some thought, planning and time.

Once the archaeologists had recorded the surface beneath the chippings, the contractor began to level the surface and clear out debris. Thirty tons of gravel and dirt then had to be taken off site in preparation for the delivery of new materials. This was our biggest challenge: A castle and its Keep were designed to keep fit and healthy warriors out, sited on a steep mound and entered via narrow staircases.

The safest and most effective method was to use a helicopter. Heli Lifts are specialists in such work and, after a site assessment, the meticulous scheduling was planned

by Bells and the pilot. The most important factor was the weather, with gusts of wind being the most significant danger, particularly when the drop zone within the Keep was relatively small and the downdraft from the rotor blades was directed straight back up to the aircraft.

The first day of operations before Christmas saw two dozen lifts, with the spoil going out and a mini digger going in, along with the first batch of building materials.

For those of us at the castle, and nearby, it was a very impressive sight with skilled flying at very low altitude and pinpoint accuracy. For the second day, in January, almost 70 more tons of debris and the digger were removed. Part of the planning involved making sure that great care was taken in delivering almost 90 tons of sand, setts and stone without damage to materials or people. Our suppliers, Benton Weatherstone, prepared special pallets and fastenings, with precise load weights to be lifted safely by helicopter.

Two and a half hours of lifts resulted in the skilled workforce having all the resources needed to start work.

We are pleased to say that progress is well underway and the Keep will be a better place to visit and it will be protected from the ravages of water for future generations to enjoy.

When the designs had been completed, the children presented their ideas, intent and methodology to a group of adults, including the Chair of Governors, in the format of Dragon’s Den. These presentations were then marked according to their use of circuits, design, originality and ability to present their ideas.

We would like to extend our condolences to the relatives of our dear friends, George Stedman and Yvonne Chitty, who have sadly passed away. We all feel a deep sorrow for the sad time that they are going through, but we also know that although that they are no longer in this world, they will continue to accompany us in spirit, taking care of their loved ones.

George Stedman We have lost one of those great people you do not meet very often in your lifetime. A man with a massive heart who was one of the kindest men I have ever known. Mr Stedman did so much for our school over numerous years and was often seen running gardening sessions with the children and ensuring our school grounds looked fabulous. George gave so much to our school and I would like all of us to take some time to reflect and give thanks for this great man. God bless you and rest in peace, my friend.

Yvonne Chitty Yvonne worked at ACE for numerous years and in various roles, including being a member of the office team, a teaching assistant and a cleaner. She has given the school so much over the years and she will be remembered for so many things. Yvonne was a lovely lady who cared and always tried her best for our children and our school. Even after her retirement she often came back to the school in the capacity of adopted nanny to many of our children.

Year 6 at the Design and Technology Project The children in Year 6 have been working hard in their science lessons and, prior to Christmas, completed some wonderful designs using their knowledge of electricity to construct circuits and then their knowledge of materials to 42

Our Year 5 and 6 boys and girls performed extremely well at the recent Locality Indoor Athletics Finals, winning every event. We are all very proud of their determination and hard work, especially as they competed against some much bigger schools, where the competition was fierce.

The indoor athletics team will now go on to represent the school at the Southern Area Finals.

Giving to others Thinking about others is something that is very important to us at ACE and this is especially important during the Christmas period. Thomas and Maddy in Year 4, alongside the wonderful Milly, have been raising money, making cards and buying gifts for others less fortunate than themselves. The children had the opportunity to share with Roger Purdom the wonderful cards that they created. Roger, is a man who has given up so much for others, and who is able to really appreciate and understand the hard work which goes into supporting others. Well done and thank you, Thomas, Maddy and Milly.

The Battle of Jutland – a visit from Alan Bush As a school we are very interested in local history, and our Year 6 class were very fortunate to have recently had a very special and important visitor, Alan Bush, who has a wealth of knowledge on the impact the First World War had on Arundel. Alan initially came to visit ACE last year to talk about Reginald Dalton, one of the 93 Arundel residents who lost their lives fighting for our freedom in the First World War. Alan has a very interesting connection with Reg Dalton and with the Battle of Jutland, the largest sea battle of the First World War, in which Reg served and died. Alan’s wife,

Julie, is Reg’s great niece and – by an intriguing coincidence – Alan’s Grandfather, Athelstan, was serving on board HMS Spitfire, which was the ship behind Reg’s ship, HMS Tipperary, and he witnessed it go down in the battle. He even had his very eloquent account of the ship sinking published in a book.

Last December, Alan came to tell out Year 6 class more about his Grandfather’s story and the children spent a fascinating morning hearing stories of Athelstan’s experiences in the war. Alan showed the children some amazing artefacts which Athelstan had salvaged from his badly damaged ship, including: a four-inch shell casing which still had gunpowder residue inside; the ship’s bugle; and the front of one of the lifeboats with a carving of the ship’s emblem – a cat spitting fire! Alan’s Grandfather had also kept photograph albums of the war and the children were able to see a photograph of the ship’s pet – a monkey named Monk – and one of the ship’s surgeon, who had to amputate a man’s leg during the battle with no anaesthetic.

We are so very grateful to Alan for the time and effort he put in to visiting us and we hope that he will be able to visit again next year.

Thanks also to Mr Servant who led his choir at the lighting of the Arundel Christmas tree and then Arundel by Candlelight, where the children entertained locals and visitors to the town enjoying the event. Mr Servant also supported the children on the first day of the Christmas holidays when we held a little carol concert to raise money at Morrisons for our ACE choir; even though the weather was dreadful many of our choir attended, along with parents and staff, and raised an incredible £80 as well as cheering up a few people during the Christmas season!

Our Key Stage 1 children also performed amazingly well in their Christmas nativity, and it was lovely that so many parents were able to come along to support the children at each of their performances. This year we performed Lights, Camel, Action, a fun-packed dazzling song and dance show celebrating the birth of Jesus. Well done to all of our wonderful Key Stage 1 children who put on amazing performances and showed true talent.

Thank you also to all our wonderful staff who attended all of the Christmas events; we are very fortunate to have staff who are so committed to our children and our school.

Christmas Lunch with Staff and Governors It was lovely that on the last day of term our governors, volunteers and staff were able to join the children in having Christmas lunch together, which has now become an annual event. We all had a delightful time and I would like to thank all of the members of our ACE community in ensuring it was such a memorable occasion.

Our ACE choirs performed at a range of events this Christmas, including at Arundel Cathedral. Arundel by Candlelight, St Nicholas’ Church, Arundel Baptist Church and Morrisons, Littlehampton.

Mr Hawke’s choir performed at both Arundel Cathedral for the Arun Choral Society’s annual Carol Concert, and at St Nicholas’ Church for our school Carol Service. All of the children sang beautifully and were a credit to the school; a special well done to Finlay in Year 6 who also sang a solo.

The children were treated to a special magic show by our very own magician, Damian Jennings, followed by a delicious festive breakfast. Thank you to our amazing parents and members of staff who also helped ensure the morning was a success. Parents and staff spent hours and hours making sure the children had a fabulous time and I wanted to thank them for their dedication and support to all our ACE boys and girls.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Arundel Co op who accepted our school as the ‘Charity of the Year’ during 2019. With the kind support of our families, friends and parishioners who chose us as their charity, we were amazed to be awarded with a cheque for £3575.65. A representative group of children walked to the Co op to collect the cheque and say thank you to the Co op team. Not only did the children receive the cheque but also were given squash and cakes! Thank you to Jackey, Khan and the team.

The children were treated to a pantomime. A touring company came and delighted the children with their version of Beauty and the Beast. This was a highlight of the final Christmas week and was paid for, very 44

Our regular allotment helpers Geoff and Bob will be carrying out tree planting with our children in the next few weeks. The proposal has come from Arundel Garden Associations. The idea being that the association funds sapling trees which are grown on our school site –“the proposal involves planting very young trees, about 20cms tall and bought from an English nursery, on pieces of land in Arundel, letting them grow to about 1.5 – 2 metres tall and then moving them to Mill Road to fill the gaps made when dying or diseased trees are removed in future”. St Philip’s is one of these sites and our children have the responsibility of being custodians of the trees until they are replanted in Arundel Town.

The Wider World

Performing Arts and Sport

Music is very high on the agenda here at St Philip’s where we feel children should have the opportunity to experience all of the arts including music. We have a specialised music teacher who teaches all classes music weekly and also runs our choir and orchestra. The children in Year 3 went on a trip to Chichester Festival Theatre to see a real orchestra perform. The children were able to hear the individual instruments and learn a little about each one. Thank you to The Friends again for funding the tickets. The children had a very interesting and exciting morning.

We also had Chichester Festival Theatre working with our Year 6 children about Michael Morpurgo’s book ‘The Butterfly Lion’. The children worked with the CTF to learn about script writing, what it entails to put on a performance and then finally watch the play at the theatre.

We also have a drama club running at school, each week, for those children who have a love of drama and acting.

With being ‘Eco –minded’, very much a high priority across the world, our School Councillors wanted to raise awareness in our school with children, staff and parents. The Eco Team took on this challenge suggested by the School Council and organised an ‘Eco day’ in school in January. The children were encouraged to walk to school, if possible, and to bring in an Eco-friendly packed lunch (avoiding single use plastics). Chartwells, our hot meals provider, worked with us to ensure that hot meals were served out of reusable servers (rather than disposable/recyclable plastic trays). Chartwells also came into school to deliver assemblies to our children to explain how lunchbox contents can be environmentally friendly and how portion control and food waste can be limited by things they do each day. The children were asked to reduce water usage when cleaning their teeth, think of other ways to reduce water usage and had class discussions about their part to play in reducing their carbon footprint and helping our environment. Our Eco team ensure lights are off when not in use, doors are kept closed to retain heat and they empty the recycling bins. The Eco Team award an Eco certificate to one class per week in our celebration assembly. This is awarded to the most Eco-friendly class of the week.

In January, each of the schools in the Locality took part in an Indoor Athletics event. This included long jump, relays, speed bounce and many other field and track events. We took a group of twenty children to the event. The children participated well, thoroughly enjoyed the event and cheered on their fellow team mates. Our school came second over all Our teams for Cross Country took part in the second stage of Cross Country earlier this term. The group in Year 3/4 girls and boys and Year 5/6 girls and boys all took part in this event at Windlesham House. Thank you to our parents for transporting the children to the event, where they all ran in lovely, bright (if a little cold) sunshine.

Keeping safe On February 11, it was Safer Internet Day. As a school, we raise awareness all year round to children about the dangers of using the internet. The Internet Safety Day provided an extra opportunity to celebrate all the wonderful things the internet can bring to us all but also how children can keep themselves safe when using it and what to do if they are concerned. We have regular assemblies on this topic in school and share best practice with parents. The children also have a regular survey sent home to them enabling them to say how safe they feel whilst using the internet at home. This gives us a guide as how much more support parents and children need.

We also have regular visits from outside providers such as NSPCC and are currently running a Barbados course for parents about keeping children safe online.

The Samaritans In 2018 6507 people committed suicide in the UK. Clare Toole-Mackson calls for people to consider volunteering for the Samaritans and explains what it is involved.

WHAT is a Samaritan? In a biblical context we all (well, those who listened in their school Scripture lessons!) know the story of the Good Samaritan, who helped the injured traveller on the road after two so-called ‘holy’ men had passed by on the other side. Today the ‘Samaritans’ organisation is widely known as an invaluable resource for those in emotional distress.

A staggering five and a half million calls for help per annum are currently made.

Chad Varah, a young London Vicar all too aware of the existing need, set up an organisation in 1953, calling it a “999 for the suicidal”. Later that year the Daily Mirror referred to the service as the ‘Good Samaritans’, and the name stuck, although it has no religious affiliations.

Since then a network of 201 branches has developed in the UK, manned by volunteers. The Samaritans is a charity and is financed mainly by donations and tireless fund-raising, including charity shops. All branches are expected to be self-sufficient. The service provides a safe space where people can talk and be listened to without judgment. All calls are confidential to Samaritans. In line with new technology contact by text and email is now frequent, and interactive chats, Instant Messaging and a ‘Listening App’ are being introduced.

Old fashioned letters are still received and face-to-face contact is also available. A staggering five and a half million calls for help per annum are currently made.

Sadly, although some calls to the Samaritans will result in a happier outcome, the organisation having a very good reputation for being effective, the suicide rate in the UK is still going up, as the stresses and problems of life today increase, particularly loneliness. Last year the rate increased by almost 11%. Free calls were introduced in 2015, though this obviously increases the costs borne by the service.

The Samaritans have in the past been seen as a somewhat clandestine organisation, particularly as volunteers obviously do not advertise the fact that 46

they are Samaritans. The name is invariably linked to suicide in the public mind, but today the organisation carries out many and wider functions. Their chief and abiding concern is to reduce death by suicide. They have a comprehensive programme of outreach, working with schools, universities, prisons, hospitals and other charities, and giving talks to groups of people, to raise awareness of mental health issues and possible solutions. Locally, St. Richard’s Hospital, the homeless charity Stone Pillow and Ford Prison are involved, as well as local schools and universities. Interested prisoners are trained to become ‘listening’ volunteers, a truly valuable service in that environment. In addition, Samaritans work with British Rail and train volunteers from their staff to talk to people on their stations.

How do Samaritans deal with a call? At this point it should be said that their telephone service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and that every six seconds Samaritans respond to a call for help.

Volunteers must attempt to put themselves in the caller’s shoes, listen without judgement and bias, and gently try to encourage the caller to look at alternative ways of coping, encouraging them towards finding their own solutions. The focus is on feelings and exploring options. Indeed, there are callers who use the service on a regular basis as a helpful resource when they are emotionally overwhelmed and are calmed by the contact. Listeners must have a totally open mind, devoid of prejudice and bias, and an ability to take on board calmly what is being heard, however shocking and distressing. The process is totally anonymous and confidential unless the caller voluntarily gives their name. Sometimes the mere fact of someone listening intently and empathetically to an account of their

troubles is a great comfort and release for the caller, who may have suffered emotional distress for a long period of time before plucking up the courage to confide in an unknown person. This too is an advantage in that it is undoubtedly easier to speak of things that lie heavy on the heart to a totally uninvolved person than to confide in friends or relatives, who may well be judgmental.

As an organisation run chiefly by volunteers, the Samaritans are always in need of new recruits. I asked a Samaritan what had initially motivated him to volunteer his services. Post-retirement, he had wanted to become involved in something worthwhile which helped other people. He also did not want a huge time commitment - approximately three hours per week. As a Samaritan he has found that, as well as helping others, he himself has gained a great deal from this work, finding it hugely rewarding. Thorough training is given. At Bognor, which is our nearest branch (there is also a branch in Worthing) there are initial information sessions every month, then an interview. There are three intakes of new volunteers each year, in February, June and October. The interview is followed by five face-toface group sessions and five digital sessions. The new volunteer is then placed with a mentor for as long as is needed and further detailed training is given over the next six months. It has hopefully become clear what qualities are required to be a ‘good’ Samaritan.

As a volunteer receiving calls, the shift lasts for three hours and there are always two people on duty. A very necessary process is the downloading, post-session, of concerns and issues to a third party. The Samaritans are incredibly supportive of their volunteers, which is extremely important. Interestingly, there are good numbers of young people volunteering, as well as older and retired people. The problems encountered are probably timeless, but the world itself is changing and perhaps younger people are more in touch with some of these changes, though there is no substitute for a lifetime of experience! There is no requirement for volunteers to be from a certain walk of life or to have been through a particular life experience; key attributes are to be over 18, to have a desire to help others, to be

tolerant, non-judgmental and open-minded, and to be a good listener – to be able to listen without telling people what to do.

The Bognor branch celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year – an impressive record. They are hoping that local businesses and organisations will support this significant and important celebration. If you are the sort of person with whom the description chimes, why not look into the possibility of training to become a Samaritan and being part of a vital lifeline? An Interview with

John Inverdale

Gill Farquharson reverses roles with sports broadcaster and journalist John Inverdale to find out what lies behind the very public persona. He was also the subject of the Music for a Desert Island evening held at St Nicholas in January.

ON meeting John Inverdale, any idea that he is anything like some of the lurid headlines that have been written about him in his career to date seems wildly inaccurate.

He is cheerful and positive, charming and quick-witted.

He was born in Plymouth in 1957 to his father, Captain 48

John Inverdale, of whom he says, ‘His great passions were the navy, medicine and rugby - I got one of the three!’ He attended Clifton College as a dayboy and there started to hone his journalistic skills. ‘I knew from about 13 that writing was what I wanted to do, so I became editor of the school newspaper.’

In 1976 university followed at Southampton, where he chose to read History ‘because there were less lectures than in English, which would have been my other choice.’ Between studying he was Captain of the tennis team, played rugby and also edited the student newspaper. He remembers his routine only too well.

‘1500 copies had to be on sale at midday on a Friday in

Firmly set on a writing career, John followed Southampton with a Postgraduate Degree in Journalism at Cardiff and from there, launched his career with a job on a Lincolnshire newspaper owned by Northcliffe Newspapers. He recalls: ‘Regional press was in trouble at that time – they were the first target for Maggie’s (Thatcher) assault on the print unions. Local papers were closing left right and centre, so I got a lot of rejections.

Finally, when Northcliffe offered me a job they asked if I minded where they sent me, I said no!’ He admits that at the time he didn’t even know where Lincolnshire really was and had to consult his parent’s car map to find out.

While there he moved to a job at BBC Radio Lincolnshire, and was there for four and half years. In 1985 he got an attachment for holiday relief at the BBC in London and worked there for 4 months. Filling several more similar temporary roles, he became known around the BBC and a permanent job finally came up on 1st January 1987, double shifting on Radios 2 and 4. ‘The early shift on Radio 2 was 5.00am till 1.00pm and then I used to do the late shift on Radio 4 which was 3.00pm till 11.00pm. I was living in Putney and would leave Broadcasting House at 11.00 pm and get to Putney at 11.40pm, try to sleep and then get back in for 5.00am. I don’t know how I survived it for as long as I did!’

John describes his ambition at that stage as wanting ‘to get somewhere that was just a great place to be. I got an audition to do Sport on Two on Saturday afternoon. I did a six-week chunk and then they asked me to go to Seoul

to be the radio frontman at the Olympics and I was off!’

In 1990 he joined Radio 5 which morphed into Radio Five Live in 1995. At the same time, he was on Nationwide, a daytime show, until 1997. He refers to that year as his ‘annus mirabilis’ when he won many Awards including Sony Broadcaster of the Year. During this time his reporting covered just about every sport – notably Wimbledon, the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, rugby, football, athletics, the Ryder Cup, the Open, the London Marathon and of course the Cheltenham Festival. ‘Rugby is my great passion, but I’d put tennis and national hunt racing as close second and third favourites’. This year’s Wimbledon will be the 35th he’s covered for the BBC, although the 51st he’s attended since first queueing overnight in 1970.

Which brings us to the infamous controversy over his comments about Marion Bartoli in 2013 when she won the Wimbledon Women’s Singles title. Read with the benefit of hindsight, it is clear that his intention, although arguably badly expressed, was to praise her determination and single-minded focus on her sport.

He says of the subsequent furore that ‘the vitriol and the bile I received was horrible’. Even though Marion herself said in a joint interview they did in Radio Times, ‘In my mind it was never really a story’. John still can’t quite believe that the story was front page news the next day even though Andy Murray had just won the Men’s Singles! ‘When somebody’s got their knives out for you, there’s no stopping them!’ he says now.

‘It was the lowest point of my professional life’ is how he describes it– ‘I just felt like chucking it all in- it was just so vindictive and so horrible.’ The paparazzi were outside the front door and he feels the reaction ‘was disproportionate to the offence.’ He reflects now that it was one of the first times the people that wanted to, had the opportunity to fire a salvo in the gender politics battle. ‘I made a mistake, which I completely accept, but in the context of thousands of hours of live broadcasting, that is one of the risks of the trade. You learn and you move on.”

I always played rugby on a Wednesday, had too many pints in the bar afterwards and then went into the newspaper office at about midnight and worked through the night - then I’d fall asleep! It was such fun but you were young enough to get away with it. One week the copy turned up at 9.20am however and the printers said sorry, you’ve missed it. I‘ve never forgotten learning that lesson about deadlines’.

Subsequent stories nonetheless sought to fan the flames with even the slightest mistake being taken up by the press. For example, the account of Steve Redgrave walking off a BBC commentary at the Rio Olympics because John wasn’t letting him speak is entirely untrue – Redgrave was simply furious at having heard on his earpiece that the Editor had dropped the race he was about to commentate on!

Time has moved on though and the audience still wants to hear and see him – there was even a Twitter campaign to bring him back to the highlights show at Wimbledon. He’ll be broadcasting for a few more years yet, but he’s reached the stage where getting the worklife balance is more important than ever, and spending time in Sussex at his home near Angmering, becomes ever more important. He plays golf to a handicap of 12. ‘It could be better if I only practised but I think my daughter’s going to get to single figures before I do which is galling!’ He still plays tennis, swims and played rugby till he was 48 but now says ‘In hindsight that was a mistake.’ He explains: ‘ I always wanted to play 1000 games and in my nerdy way I kept a diary of all 963 I played. But then I got jumped on in a game and was pretty badly injured – at one point I thought I was going to lose the sight in one eye – and my girls said enough now, no more, so I stopped.’

He works with several sports charities. ‘Aspire, a spinal injury charity, because one of my best mates at university was an amateur jockey and he broke his back in a fall at Hereford races. He subsequently died as a result of the complications.’ He is Patron of CRY (Cardiac Risk Young) because ‘another friend died of a cardiac arrest on the field when we were both playing rugby. Most countries insist on young people having a heart test when they play sport, but it is still voluntary here. It is surprising how many parents in schools won’t pay £75 to make sure their children are safe from such a risk.’ He is also President of The Wooden Spoon which is a rugby charity which supports children with disabilities to play the game.

And what does his future hold? ‘I’d like to keep broadcasting because it’s been part of my life for four decades, but by 2021 I’ll have been doing the job for 41 years and I think that’s probably quite enough! It will be nice to go to sporting events and not work in 2022 – in a restaurant with a couple of beers with mates!’ ‘I’m also – 40 years too late – learning to play the guitar. To play at the Arundel Festival is my target! I’m just not sure when.’

The River Transformation

The Environment Agency’s arrival on the river to work on Arundel’s flood defences brought unprecedented images into the town. For those without a riverside view, Nigel Cull documented their presence in some amazing photographs shown here. Although the work on the Fitzalan Road side of the river is ongoing, the work on the River Road side is, at the time of going to press, suspended having hit technical problems. We are all hoping that an effective solution can be found quickly.

Make 2020 a less taxing year THE run-up to the end of the tax year provides ‘use it or lose it’ opportunities to help secure your financial future and pay less tax on the inheritance you leave your loved ones.

From uncertainty over Brexit to trade wars, there are many risks that pose a challenge to investors now; and any number of unforeseen factors in the years to come.

But these are beyond our control; they cannot be allowed to prevent us from planning our financial futures. Indeed, we will give ourselves the best chance of achieving our financial goals if we focus on what we can control: how and where we invest our money, how much tax we pay, the size of our retirement fund, and how much of our estate passes to our family free of Inheritance Tax (IHT).

ISAs ISAs have become one of the most popular ways to save, principally because they are simple and readily accessible.

The substantial increase in the ISA allowance to £20,000 was a very welcome step in encouraging individuals to invest for their future. However, as interest rates in the UK remain near record lows, money being held in Cash ISAs is failing to achieve the very basic objective of keeping pace with inflation. The result is real losses for savers.

Those who are investing their ISA allowance for the long term – in assets offering the scope for attractive levels of income and capital growth – are giving themselves a better chance of maximising the tax-saving opportunities on offer.

Individuals yet to use their ISA allowance, or with accumulated ISA savings, need to carefully consider their options to ensure that they are maximising this valuable opportunity to generate tax-efficient capital and income for the future.

Pensions Saving into a pension is an even more attractive prospect than it was a few years ago. This is because there is much greater freedom for taking benefits; and pension savings can now be more easily left as part of a tax-free inheritance. However, the advantages extend further than just drawing benefits and passing money 54

on to loved ones: the government still rewards savers by giving them tax relief on their pension contributions.

For every 80p you contribute Sam Jennings to a pension, the government automatically adds 20p in tax relief. Higher earners can claim extra tax relief through their annual tax return, meaning that a £1 pension contribution can effectively cost just 60p.

Those wishing to make their retirement plans a reality should consider fully utilising their annual allowance for this tax year to make the most of the tax breaks on offer. Unused allowances can be carried forward, but only from the three previous tax years. This financial year is the final chance for pension savers to use the allowance for 2016/17: if it is not used by 5 April 2020, it will be lost forever.

Inheritance Tax There are few more confusing – or unpopular – taxes than IHT. But continued confusion and inertia means that the Office for Budget Responsibility expects to see a 19% increase in IHT revenues over the next four years3.

However, there are a number of exemptions that allow individuals to reduce future bills. Perhaps the best known is the annual gifting allowance, which gives individuals the opportunity to remove £3,000 of assets from their estate immediately (£6,000 if they use the previous year’s allowance as well).

Taking steps to reduce your taxable estate by topping up a child’s pension or Junior ISA could go a long way to providing them with an invaluable head start in life.

Make this year’s £3,000 gifting allowance count – and carry forward last year’s, if you haven’t used it already.

It’s a time of the year when individuals and couples are given an opportunity to put their long-term plans back on track by using reliefs and allowances that would otherwise be lost. Nevertheless, this requires some knowledge and expertise. That’s why you should speak with a financial adviser to better understand how you can gain maximum advantage for this year and the years to come.

Diary of an

Arundel mother

as much as possible – 1000 hours over the course of 12 months. It sounds like a lot – and it is – but did you know children apparently spend 1200 hours on average in front of a screen. The challenge aims to at least try and match how many hours children spend watching YouTube as they do looking up at the stars or out to sea.

So I’m excited to see how many hours we can spend outside as a family this year. We are of course incredibly lucky to be surrounded by so much natural beauty in and around Arundel. The South Downs, Arundel Park, Slindon woods as well as wonderful local museums and wildlife centres that we can take the children to – but sometimes we all need a little push. So here are a few ideas I’ll be trying to put into practice through Spring to get my boys outside (and rack up some hours for the challenge!)

Take a night time walk and do some stargazing Victoria Lugton

WE did it! We made it through winter and out the other side! There were moments the boys were climbing the walls stuck inside, if it hadn’t been for local events like the Wassail at Bury school and the Arundel Community Orchard and my husband’s birthday it would have been all about drizzle and the election!

However, Spring is here and now more than ever the boys and I are planning to get outside and enjoy the lighter evenings and Spring flowers. It’s no secret that I love being in nature as much as possible whatever the time of year and whatever the weather (I do make my living as an outside family photographer after all!) but I also think it’s so important for children to have as much outside time as possible too. No matter how much whinging they do in the car on the way there!

So earlier this year when I heard about the ‘1000 hours outside’ challenge, it sounded like something we could get stuck into. The challenge aims to get children outside

This is a new addition to our outside plans which my two boys are loving. We head out for an evening walk, just through the streets of town and use a free star gazing app on our phones to spot where all the planets and stars are in the sky. Even if it’s all clouded over it shows where everything is. We all found it amazing and the boys were fascinated to see what was above us… like Venus over the allotments on the Ford Road! We downloaded the SkyView Lite phone app which is free from the Apple or Android app store.

Head to one of the local Easter events During the school holidays there’s so much going on at the wonderful local attractions its almost hard to pick what to do. A few we’re planning to get to include the Spring Food Festival at the Weald and Downland Museum which is on from 2 – 3 May, Amberley museum’s Easter Holiday Family Activities and trail so we can explore the attractions and keep the children moving as they follow the activities around the huge land there. Also the Easter Duck Quest at the Wetlands is a favourite too, the boys love spotting the yellow ducks hidden around the ponds.

Go on a woodland wildflower walk Woodland wild flowers are some of my favourites and we’re so lucky to have so many untouched spots very close to town. The bluebells up at the Angmering Park 55

Estate is a favourite – I even spotted deer grazing when I visited last time (although admittedly I was without the children or the dog!) The long stretch of woodland from Taunton Hill to Walberton are also fun with English woodland and a pine tree forest to explore.

If you are heading to look at the flowers, why not get involved in a Spring colour photo hunt (works especially well for children who really can’t bear to be torn away from their screens!) Let them take and collect photos of the things they see that represent all the colours of the rainbow - a red ladybird, green moss, bluebells etc etc.

Pond dipping A wonderful memory of mine when I was a child was going pond dipping and I plan to share the delight with my children. Taking nets down to the stream at Mill Road and seeing if we can find tadpoles (should be seen in slow moving streams from March), pond skaters and other bugs to examine. A jam jar completes the toolkit so your children can get a proper look of the creatures you find, before setting them free back to their homes.

Perhaps finish your trip down memory lane with a nostalgic game of poohsticks off the bridge!

Go fly a kite Another classic but I’m sure many a TV addict can’t help but get excited by a bit of kite flying up at Whiteways or down at Climping beach. I’ve found some great ideas to make our own kites out of paper plates on Pinterest which I think the boys would love and will make them much more inclined to get outside and fly them – decorating them with drawings and coloured ribbons. I’ve added the directions on how to do this below if you fancy giving it a try.

West Sussex Rocks!

I remember when the boys found their first West Sussex Rock hidden in a bush at the Arundel playground at Mill Road. We were intrigued by this beautiful rock that someone had painted and carefully hidden away for a child to find – on the back had instructions to go to the ‘West Sussex Rock’ Facebook page and share a picture, then in turn we should hide it again for another child to find. You can paint your own rocks too with pictures and happy messages and hide them yourselves – or keep your eyes open for rocks all around West Sussex. We’ve found them at Bosham and West Wittering too!

Finally, I’m planning to organise our own local Spring seasonal meet up in April to help us all build up our outside hours! My aim is one for every season as a fun way for us all to get offline and enjoy the outside all together. Connect with me on Instagram or Facebook for more information.

Make your own kite Supplies needed for the kite craft: • Paper plates • Kite string • Felt tip pens • Scrap fabric • Scissors • Craft sticks • Hole punch Start by tracing anything round in the centre of your paper plate like a small bowl. Cut the inside circle out with scissors. Once you’ve done that, hole punch around the edge of the paper plate and tie with kite string or fishing line. You can decorate the kite with drawings and tie fabric down your kite string. Then enjoy!

Dear Editor DOG POO

I AM writing as I am now at my wits’ end. I don’t know what to do next and I thought of you.

I live in the middle of our beautiful town. I walk in the town every day. In the last 10 days I have had 3 occasions of having to pick up dog poo outside my house. By the time I see it someone has already stepped in it. I walk up the hill to the cathedral and there are often new loads there each week. That’s the route the children take to go to school.

I have spoken to Arun District Council reminding them that there is not one dog bin in Arundel. We need a dog bin outside the garden at the bottom of Arun Street as most dogs are walked past the garden and then down River Road and past my house.

There are so many dogs/dog owners in the town most of whom pick up.

We cannot do anything as individuals but just a thought... If we attack the problem (not sure how?) as a

town maybe the foulers could be ‘named and shamed’ and maybe one day someone will get prosecuted.

FOUR DARK DAYS LAST NOVEMBER WHAT happened down at the Civic Centre in Littlehampton at the end of November?

Tension mounted as the appeal by Renaissance to the Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government was due to be heard. Their plans to build 46 luxury flats for the elderly had been rejected by Arun District Council, twice.

Their first planning application was for 49 flats, three years ago. In spite of being drawn up by experienced retirement developers, was it what Arundel really needed then? We already had five such establishments for older people in the town. But what we didn’t have and hadn’t

had for forty years since Maggie Thatcher sold off our council houses, was accommodation that our young people could possibly afford once they left home.

Thus the AHA campaign was launched. The local papers came in on the act, and Adrian Burrows, who lived right opposite where the building was scheduled to be in Fitzalan Road, emerged to join with me to fight the application. Adrian spent an enormous amount of time and energy, and his own money, in making the case to stick to Arundel’s Neighbourhood Plan. This stipulates that the site, occupied by Blastreat Metal Finishers, would have 24 small family homes and gardens, of which 30% would be ‘affordable’ for first time occupants – the first ‘Affordable Housing in Arundel’!

The Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State listened carefully to the witnesses called to give evidence.

I was impressed by his apparent fair-mindedness and authority. Adrian had worked much of the preceding week studying all the relevant papers, and his back-up to ADC’s barrister was incisive. We held our breath.

Six weeks later came the decision: Renaissance’s appeal had been dismissed- on the grounds that their plans completely disregarded the Neighbourhood Plan. This landmark decision therefore entirely validates the latest Neighbourhood Plan and shows that it is worthy and robust, which sets the precedent for Arundel to be able to defends itself from inappropriate development on other sites around the town for the foreseeable future. The town should have celebrated with fireworks or something – but some have not heard of the appeal, or the result.

So, what is the next step for that site? Money is the great driver in business. A housing association doesn’t have a lot. I’m inclined to put my faith in the new CLT (Community Land Trust) if they can get into action quick enough – before another developer tries another illchosen scheme. Their website says: The updated Neighbourhood Plan supports the setting up of a Community Land Trust to develop truly affordable housing in Arundel. The CLT will also have powers to develop other community facilities. A Steering Group has been set up and we are registering as a Community Benefit Society, regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The first project for Arundel CLT is to work with The Norfolk Estate and a Registered Provider of Housing on the development of a mix of residential homes, a community facility and links to public rights of way/green infrastructure network.
