As my MBA journey begins to wind down, I found my applica on essay and can appreciate how much the UConn Full-Time MBA Program influenced my perspec ve. As Director of Opera ons and Marke ng for 3BC, I work in a field that I had no knowledge of and a company that only existed on paper when this was wri en! I’m also a li le astonished by my generali es (but not surprised!). Why are you interested in pursuing your graduate business degree at this stage in your life/career? What are your short-term and long-term career goals and how will this graduate business program help you achieve these goals? Problem-solving, crea vity, growth, and service have been central tenets of my personal and professional life. I have lived each of these in my career as a teacher and administrator and have been honored to be able to work with excited children, dedicated staff, and caring communi es. While challenging and deeply rewarding, there are areas I would like to explore to find a be er fit for my skills. Entrepreneurship, sales, project management, and fiscal analysis have all been facets of my work at one point or another but a career in the business sector would allow me to focus on these areas to be er benefit an organiza on. A degree from UConn’s full- me MBA program, with its rigorous content, highly regarded faculty, and involved corporate partners and alumni would help me learn the vital business content and skills I would need to make such a transi on. The program and its depth and breadth within the state would also help me build a network of people with whom to learn from and collaborate. My short-term career goals are to bring the human resource, sta s cal analysis, strategic planning, and data-based decision making background that made me successful in my previous work to this program and a future company. As an educator in mul ple roles, I learned about how to balance the tasks of being a manager and the responsibili es to the organiza on as a leader. This included making personnel decisions, planning budgets to support diverse needs, marke ng a school or program, being innova ve within a set of parameters, and working within large organiza ons beholden to a mul tude of stakeholders. Our success was measured by test scores, community feedback, finances, enrollment, and overall reputa on. By bridging my analy cal and leadership skills with the knowledge and experience gained from UConn’s full- me MBA program, I hope to add value to a company early in my new career because all organiza ons have similar complexi es in personnel, client rela ons, and qualita ve and quan ta ve measures of progress. In the long-term, I would look to further my leadership and business acumen through acquiring more contextual knowledge within a company or par cular area of work. I went from studying science to teaching science and from having only middle and high school experience to leading an elementary school. These changes taught me that exper se can only be built through a con nuous cycle of improvement that includes careful study, applica on and work, and reflec on and adjustment of prac ce. Ul mately, I hope to be able to join a company for years so as to be able to purposefully and deeply support the organiza on’s goals and mission in a client rela ons, marke ng, or strategic planning leadership role. Taking two years off from full- me work will be challenging but I believe that UConn’s program will benefit my growth, my family, and any company I work for in the near future.
