01 CHANDIGARH AIRPORT GATE DESIGN COMPETITION Runner-Up 2(Pan INDIA)

The diversity and the rich cultural heritage of Punjab presents a multi-hued heritage of ancient civilizations. The aim of the competition was to design an Entry Gate for Chandigarh Airport that showcases the spirit of the people of Punjab and to welcome visitors.

The concept of the gate design was inspired by the cultural confluence of the region of Punjab and Chandigarh.

Taking from the influences of the past and bringing in contemporary technological advances, we tried to create an identity for the airport.

THE CONCEPT

WHY HORIZONTALITY ?

By elaborating the gate horizontally and not just vertically prolongs the user experience by creating a panoramic view to the opposite end of the gate.

KARA The second K of the 5 K's of Sikhism: Kara, onion shaped domes and the intricate jalli patterns prevalent in Gurdwaras and Havelis are all elements of the historical architecture of Punjab, which have been amalgamated in the gate design. The intention was to relate to that historical understanding of Punjab architecture, not through the use of mimicry or a limiting adherence to the iconography of the past, but rather by developing a firmly contemporary interpretation, reflecting a more nuanced understanding.

JALLI PATTERN

Jalli Pattern inspired from the flooring pattern of Golden Temple, Amritsar

The tangled tower in the central median is inspired from the first K of the 5 K's of Sikhism- Kesh. This tower not only creates an aesthetic welcoming feature but also seconds as a support to the structure running through it.

2” x 2” M.S. Box Section Pattern inspired from Phulkari Void Yellow Tinted Acrylic Sheet

The Phulkari is a simple and sparsely hand-embroidered pattern on dupattas, etc for special occasions. These Phulkari patterns gave the idea for fixing the glass on the space- framed structure.

The free flowing structure overlapping the gate is a space framed structure inspired from the patterns created by the Gatka Chakra and the Aara Gatka martial art form. The mesmerizing patterns which are created while performing Aara Gatka, were our source of inspiration for this structure.

02 THE HOUSE

(Crafting Home through Spaces) Residence/Competition

"The home should be the treasure chest of living" Quoted by one of the master architects, "Le Corbusier", The House draws inspiration from the ideologies used by him while designing the architectural character of Chandigarh.

Lost in the race towards modernism , the city has lost the original character, which we have tried to re-create in our house.

The vision of the house is to make it respond to the architecture and urban landscape of Chandigarh. The outer structure is a rigid rectangular form contrary to the inner free flowing spaces integrated with nature. Classic elements like the spiral staircase, exposed concrete facade/ roof, intricate brickwork and jaalis have been used to enhance the building design.

Site Location : The site is at a very unique location in the foothills of the Shivaliks with Sukhna Lake on the other side, challenging the composite climate of Chandigarh and aiming to bring back the legacy of Corbusier.

Courtyard provides light and air while also acting as space divider for daily living with landscaping on both the sides integrating a tree filled island at its courtyard with leaves swaying in a blissful manner cooling the inner environment through external breeze.

03 VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE

(Reviving the Architectural Character of Khizrabad, Punjab) Vernacular case study and Design/ Studio Project Khizrabad is a village 26 kms away from Chandigarh with a land area of approximately 2000 acres. The village has a very rich historical background.

The objective of this project is to bring the communities together and give them a common platform where they can interact as well as exchange their skills with one another. This will also make the villagers aware of and understand the importance of these structures and can inspire them to maintain these old structures Skills : Documentation Research Concept Design Softwares

The village has an interesting morphological character. The built forms in the village have gone through a lot of changes through time. these changes are still reflected in the architectural vocabulary of the village.

The aim of the project was to revive the child day care centre which had been abandoned due to its deteriorated condition and provide a space to the village women to share and exchange different skills.

Site Photo Gallery

The purpose was to bring back the lost charm and create a spacious working space. In order to do so, the first floor is being proposed in accordance with the construction of the ground floor. Some additions to the site are made such as the deori gate, toilets, kitchen and the reconstruction of the staircase.

Deori: It is an entrance gate which provides an identity to the building. It acts as a mark of purity and exhibits motifs showcasing the regional culture.

Geometrical and floral pattered jallis derived from the existing built forms of the village which have been inspired from the Sikh and Mughal architecture styles. The arches have been derived from the colonial era buildings of the village.

The concept is in response to the climatic condition of the site. The site lies in the temperate climatic zone i.e extreme summers and extreme winters.The site lies on the national highway which makes it more challenging.

The curvilinear form and planning provides a better climatic response. The curvature of the facade distributes the wind evenly and does not trap heat easily. Additionally, the South-Western side of the block has a double facade which cuts the sun and cools down the micro-climate of the block.

3 There is a weekly organic market held near the lake where the farmers and small entrepreneurs come from as far as 50 kms to sell their organic goods that include fruits, vegetables, grains and static goods.

4 There was a need to design a prototype structure that could function as a display stand for the goods. The display stand had to be foldable, stackable, dismountable, flexible structure that can have shelves at different levels. The display shelves also had to be long lasting, made from eco friendly materials and cost efficient.

5 A Single unit of Crate is formed by reusing the old usable Battens. These wooden battens are used as an ideal organic material for making these crates.

Multiple units can be stacked one over the other and be used in every possible way for the display purpose.
