Dear Readers...

For the November Edition of Ecole John Diefenbaker Senior School Newspaper, a theme of the 'Past, Present, & Future of You' is used as a guide. The theme touched on the subjects of Remembrance Day, Present Health, Life After High School, and Advice I found this theme to be inclusive and helpful towards students as they can be inspired to make change or be interested about our school Until Next Time, Victoria Jarvis

The Vaping Epidemic

Blueberry, Vanilla, Apple, Mango, & Mint, are delicious flavours that mean more than just the food A chemical liquid masked by the intended taste, filled with nicotine, and popular amongst the youth. Presented in fun packaging and attractive colours, used by your favourite celebrity, and is less harmful than cigarettes It is just a Vape

In this article, research, statistics, and factual information are presented to highlight the subject of vaping among youth

Since COVID 19, the mental health of teenagers has suffered, meaning stress, anxiety, and depression weigh down the shoulders of many youths Isolation makes social interactions difficult, and many are turning their heads towards an easy, affordable, and quick option that can distract them from dealing with their mental health

From 2017 to 2019 youth vaping increased by 112%, leaving a new generation with Nicotine Addictions and unidentified health effects

(B) Mental Health Chart provided by The Well Being of Ontario Students: OSDUHS 2021

As isolation was discontinued, vaping highlighted the social aspects of life Including public places such as schools

Due to the noticeable increase of youth partaking in vaping, community members from every area in Canada have put actions and support in place regarding youth vaping Actions include;

Bill S 5 is an amendment to Canada’s Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) to help recognize the importance of minimizing risks posed by toxic substances Supported Research on vaping and vaping devices

The Vaping Epidemic

Limiting Sales and Advertising of vaping products

Enforcing Laws around the dangers of youth vaping such as fines, confiscations, suspensions, and criminal records Supporting the Mental Health of Youth by providing resources in and out of the school

Within schools, attendance and grades are declining while the number of confiscations and risk of fines for Vaping continues to increase

If caught vaping on school property, students could face up to a 3 Day Suspension, a Fine of $305, and $490 if caught sharing with a friend under the age of 19.

On public property, anyone has the right to contact Tobacco Enforcement if one does not follow the enforced rules or is believed to be under the legal age of 19

Although different Vaping devices will differ in things such as the level of nicotine content and flavour, but they all have common similarities and health effects

Nicotine is a highly addictive additive that is easily absorbed into the body and can change behaviours and moods within seconds of absorption

Propylene Glycol is a food additive that carries a faintly sweet taste and can commonly be found in paints and plastics as it helps create colours

Diacetyl is a buttery flavouring that can be extremely dangerous if inhaled into the lungs

Carcinogens are cancer forming substances that include chemicals like asbestos, vinyl chloride, and arsenic

As Vaping has only been around since the 21st century, long term effects are not fully uncovered nor confirmed Health issues that can expand into life threatening problems include;

Nicotine Poisoning Popcorn Lung from Diacetyl Second Hand Vapour Device Malfunctions

Increased likelihood of heart attacks Chronic Lung Disease Asthma

Health effects could have a worsening toll due to the undeveloped bodies of youth.

Remembrance Day

Contribution from: Ms Morris, Ms Murray, & Ms. Maclaughlin and Period A Students.

On Friday, November 11th, JDSS had an abundance of participation in and out of the school to support Canadian Veterans

Within the school, Ms Pieman made a yearly display of her great great uncle's war uniform and mementos in the front hall of JDSS

White symbolizes the peace our country has achieved and continues to maintain. Black symbolizes the People Of Colour who fought without recognition

The poppy rocks were displayed and distributed to the families of veterans in our local area

Ms Morris and students Bennedict, Joe, and Ariel held a short ceremony on the PA System throughout the school. The ceremony included the reading of poems and writing pieces, concluding with a moment of silence for all the brave Canadian soldiers who fought and continue to fight for our future

In Ms Maclaughlin’s art class, students designed and painted poppies on smooth rocks

Among the poppies, there are four different colours. Each colour represents a different meaning and act of remembrance regarding past wars Red symbolizes the traditional poppy used to commemorate the soldiers Purple symbolizes the animals who faced harm during crossfire.

At the Cenotaph, Ms Murray and 19 members from the JDSS Senior Concert Band and Senior Music Class recited music compositions during the hour long Remembrance Day Ceremony

The music played included; O' Canada, God Save the King, and several traditional chorales and hymns arranged by Frank Erickson; Including The Crusaders, Be Thou My Vision and Amazing Grace.

As Ms Murray stated, “The selection of repertoire was chosen carefully to maintain the right tone for the ceremony ” The music was familiar to the audience in attendance while respecting the environment and mood of the Cenotaph.

Legion and community members were grateful for the band and their performance as they expressed how the chosen music represented the day of memorial effectively

JDSS at OFSAA

Contribution From: Mrs. Donnelly

On Saturday, November 5th, six athletes from JDSS travelled to the OFSAA Championships at Dagmar Ski Resort in Uxbridge, Ontario. All athletes represented John Diefenbaker Senior School to the best of their ability and should be proud of their individual and team accomplishments Competing against AAA/AAAA schools, while JDSS only being an AA school, is a great accomplishment for the athletes of John Diefenbaker Senior School

In the boy's division, brothers Eli and Tristan Bouius competed to the best of their ability as they both finished in the top 10 in their leagues.

Eli competed in the Novice Boys league,

finishing 4th out of 253 runners, and Tristan competed in the Senior Boys league, finishing 6th out of 244 runners. The most notable event of the day was Ava Moric capturing 1st place in the Junior Girls league

OSLC 44

On November 6th, 18 leaders of JDSS hopped on a bus and travelled to Canada’s natural gem, Niagara Falls, for a three day leadership conference

This year was the first full capacity conference of the Ontario Student Leadership Conference, (OSLC), since the beginning of COVID 19.

OSLC is an annual event that has run 44 years, with the goal to create and motivate the leaders of Ontario by delivering powerful and inspiring messages that they can take back to their communities

Coming from a small town, being in the company of 2000 other students was a confusing transition, especially when the town of Hanover is foreign to most of the other schools, and the way JDSS had to describe where they came from, was; “around two hours from Toronto.” Although JDSS and all the other schools came from varying locations across Ontario, there were many things that they had in common, the most prominent, being a love for their schools and c

School Spirit

communities, and a hope to have a positive influence on the lives of others.

OSLC brought in many influential speakers to encourage these mindsets, speaking on messages such as helping those in need, making a positive mark on the world, making new of one’s school after COVID 19, how to draw out leadership qualities from oneself and others, and so much more Learning at the largest leadership conference in Canada did not only just give the leaders of JDSS ideas as listed, but it gave them a chance to bravely immerse themselves into groups of unfamiliar students who were able to offer firsthand leadership advice at the same value the professional speakers

Overall, the JDSS students who attended OSLC gained many valuable lessons, anecdotes, skills, inspirations, and more, and those who are not graduating this year, are excited to attend OSLC45

A Cup For Your Mental Health

You can’t pour from an empty cup This was the message Jack Chapter promoted at their event on November 24 They told students if you do not take care of yourself, you will not be able to take care of others because you will have nothing left to give The Chapter helped students practice self care by handing out free hot chocolate that morning All they asked is that in return students did their best to fill someone else’s cup and brighten their day!
