PROJECT STATEMENT
THE HOUSTON LIVING LAB FACILITY (HLLF) IS POSITIONED ACROSS THE EXISTING HOUSTON AIA BUILDING AND SUPPORTS THE ARCHITECTURE, CONSTRUCTION SCIENCE, AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TEACHING AND RESEARCH PROGRAMS. THE HLLF CAN ASSIST PROFESSIONALS, CONSTRUCTION SCIENTISTS, AND STUDENTS IN ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE AND DESIGNING PROJECTS FOR THE COMMUNITY AND FUTURE GENERATIONS.
THE TRILLIUM FACILITY IS A LIVING LAB FACILITY THAT FOCUSES ON STUDYING AND ANALYZING THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNG CHILDREN, YOUNG ADULTS, AND ADULTS. THE FACILITY ALSO LOOK AT THE STUDY IF NATURAL LIGHT AND BEING SURROUNDED BY NATURE PLAY A ROLE IN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT. THE DESIGN OF THE FACILITY IS A BLEND OF THREE KEY CONCEPTS: OPEN INNOVATION/ OPENNESS, BALANCE WITHIN THE ECOSYSTEM, AND CHANGES/ MOVEMENT.

AROUND THE FACILITY ARE RESTAURANTS, OFFICE SPACE, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON DOWNTOWN, AND THE AIA ARCHITECTURE BUILDING IS ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF COMMERCE ST. THE SOUTHEAST OF THE FACILITY IS NOISIER DUE TO LIGHT RAIL AND HEAVY TRAFFIC COMING FROM MAIN ST. ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE FACILITY.

THE TRILLIUM SERVED AS THE DESIGN’S INSPIRATION FOR THE LIVING LAB FACILITY. I DESIRED TO EMBRACE NATURE NOT ONLY IN THE FACILITY’S EXTERIOR BUT ALSO WITHIN ITS ARCHITECTURAL ENVELOPE. ACCORDING TO SEVERAL STUDIES, PHYSICAL, COGNITIVE, SOCIAL, AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT ARE CONSIDERABLY ENHANCED BY EXPOSURE TO NATURE. THEREFORE, THE MAIN STRUCTURE’S DESIGN REPRESENTED THE TRILLIUM PETALS, WITH EACH PETAL REPRESENTING A DISTINCT STAGE OF HUMAN GROWTH.


IN STIMULATING CREATIVITY AND GENERATING NEW IDEAS, IT IS NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN AN OPEN MIND AND THINK UNCONVENTIONALLY. THUS, YOU CAN OBTAIN A VARIETY OF PERSPECTIVES, WHICH COULD LEAD TO FASTER AND MORE EFFECTIVE DEVELOPMENT, NEW IDEAS, AND PROGRESS. MOREOVER, THE CONCEPT PERMITS THE INTEGRATION OF THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL SURROUNDINGS.
MUCH LIKE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, NO ONE’S JOURNEY IS THE SAME, AND THERE ARE TURNS AND TWISTS IN DEVELOPING AND FINDING BALANCE. THE TRIFECTA OFFICE BUILDING IS THE CITY CENTRE SIGNATURE STRUCTURE FOR RAISING PROPERTY VALUES AND BROADENING THE CUSTOMER BASE. THE HIGH RISE HAS A TOTAL HEIGHT OF 40 STORIES AND A GROSS AREA OF ABOUT 1,200,000 SQUARE FEET. THE MINIMALLY NECESSAR
UMEROUS SHOPS, SEVERAL RESTAURANTS, THE GYM (1), THE PUBLIC RESTROOMS, THE ELEVATOR (1), AND THE EQUIPMENT ROOMS (ELECTRICAL ROOMS, MECHANICAL ROOM)
GREEN SPACES ARE NECESSARY AND THEREFORE WAS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT A SKY GARDEN WAS DESIGN FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND CITY VIEWS.
THE SITE PLAN MUST TAKE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES INTO ACCOUNT AND WORK IN HARMONY WITH THE EXISTING CITY CENTRE MASTER PLAN. A PARKING STRUCTURE IS NECESSARY, AND THE OVERALL NUMBER OF PARKING SPACES MUST COMPLY WITH THE CITY OF HOUSTONOFF-STREET PARKING ORDINANCE.
LEED CERTIFICATION IS NECESSARY. TO MEET THE GOAL OF ENERGY CONSERVATION, THE DESIGN MUST TAKE INTO ACCOUNT HOW TO UTILIZE NATURAL LIGHTING AND REDUCE SOLAR HEAT ACQUISITION AND LOSS.

THIS PROJECT IS A WINERY AND A BREWERY INTENDED FOR SOUTH KOREA’S BUSAN REGION, SERVING SOJU AND MAKGEOLLI.THE ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES THROUGH THE USE OF KOREAN CULTURAL IDEAS WOULD INVITE A DESIGN CRITERIA WHICH IS INTEGRATED IN THIS PROJECT.THE PROJECT’S PROGRAMMATIC REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE A CORRIDOR, LOBBY, WINE GALLERY, GIFT SHOP, OFFICE, WINE PRODUCTION ROOM, AGING ROOM, WINE TASTING AREA, RESTAURANT, KITCHEN, AND RESTROOMS. THE OUTDOOR SPACES INCLUDE AN OUTDOOR PATIO, BALCONY, RICE PADDY FIELD, REFLECTING POOL, GUEST PARKING (INCLUDING ADA-ACCESSIBLE PARKING), AND SERVICE PARKING (WITH STAFF AND TRUCK PARKING).

“A LITTLE TASTE OF HEAVEN”
MAKGEOLLI IS A TRADITIONAL KOREAN RICE WINE THAT HAS BEEN MADE BY KOREANS FOR GENERATIONS. MAKGEOLLI IS KOREA’S OLDEST ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE. HISTORICAL RECORDS SHOW THAT KOREANS HAVE BEEN DRINKING MAKGEOLLI FROM AS FAR BACK AS THE GOYREO DYNASTY (918-1392). MAKGEOLLI IS A DEEP PART OF BUSAN’S HISTORY. THIS FERMENTED RICE WINE’S ORIGINS TRACE BACK TO THE JOSEON DYNASTY ERA WHEN PEOPLE BEGAN TO BREW IT AT GEUMJEONGSANSEONG FORTRESS, LOCATED 800 METERS UP ON THE TOP OF MT. GEUMJEONG HERE IN BUSAN.
SOJU FIRST APPEARED IN 14TH-CENTURY GORYEO, WHEN MONGOL INVADERS LED BY GENGHIS KHAN BROUGHT THE LEVANTINE DISTILLING TECHNIQUE FROM ARABIA TO THE KOREAN PENINSULA. DISTILLERIES WERE LATER ESTABLISHED IN AND AROUND GAEGYEONG (NOW KNOWN AS KAESONG), THE CAPITAL OF GORYEO AT THE TIME. SOJU IS A MODERNIZED VERSION OF THE TRADITIONAL KOREAN RICE WINE MAKGEOLLI.

THE WARMEST MONTH OF THE YEAR IS AUGUST (AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 86F DEGREES), WHILE THE COLDEST MONTH IS JANUARY (AVERAGE TEMPERATURE 32F DEGREES). THE AVERAGE ANNUAL RAINFALL IS 4.05 INCHES. THE MAXIMUM HUMIDITY IS 85%. THE PREVAILING WIND BLOWS FROM THE NORTH-EAST BETWEEN SEPTEMBER AND MARCH, AND FROM THE SOUTH-WEST BETWEEN APRIL AND AUGUST.

THE CONCEPT, “YEONG WON”, MEANING ETERNITY, WAS INSPIRED BY THE ETERNAL MOUTAINOUS NATURAL LANDSCAPE OF KOREA WHOSE RICH CULTURE HAS A LONG TRADITION OF CONFUCIANISM.
THE ESQUISSE SKETCH REPRESENTS A MOUTAIN, SYMBOLIZING THE CENTER OF THE WORLD AS WELL AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH. MOUNTAINS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CENTRAL TO THE KOREAN IDENTITY. IN KOREAN MYTHOLOGY, THE GOD HWANUNG CAME DOWN FROM “HEAVEN” (MOUNT TAEBAEK) TO RULE THE EARTH.
IN THE FINAL DESIGN, THE TRIANGULAR ROOF FORM EXPRESSES BOTH THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MOUNTAIN IN KOREAN CULTURE AS WELL AS THE STRENGTH OF THE KOREAN NATION SINCE THE TRIANGLE IS FIRMLY

PROJECT STATEMENT
THIS PROJECT IS A JAPANESE INSPIRED TEAHOUSE THAT IS MEANT FOR THE CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS. THE ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES THROUGH THE USE OF JAPANESE CULTURAL IDEAS WOULD INVITE A DESIGN CRITERIA WHICH IS INTEGRATED IN THIS PROJECT. THE TEA HOUSE CONSIST OF A LOBBY, A TEA-ROOM WITH TWO HEARTHS, TOKONOMA ALCOVE AND AN ATTACHED MIZUYA (KITCHEN), A MEDITATION ROOM (WITH AN OPTIONAL TOKONOMA ALCOVE), AND RESTROOMS. THE REQUIRED OUTDOOR SPACES ARE A ZEN GARDEN, GUEST PARKING (WITH REQUIRED HANDICAPPED PARKING SPACES) AND SERVICE PARKING.

SITE ANALYSIS
THE CITY OF AUSTIN IS LOCATED IN THE UNITED STATES ON THE NORTH AMERICA CONTINENT. THE LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE ARE 30.3° N & 97.7° W. THE SUMMER SOLSTICE ON JUNE 21 HAS A 85.5° SOLAR ANGLE. THE SPRING/FALL EQUINOX ON MAR./SEPTEMBER HAS A 62° SOLAR ANGLE. THE WINTER SOLSTICE ON DEC. 21 HAS A 38.5° SOLAR ANGLE. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE ARE IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST WITH 96.4°F AND THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE ARE IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY WITH 42.6°F. THE MOST PRECIPITATION HAPPENS IN THE MONTH OF MAY. THE AVERAGE ANNUAL PERCENTAGE OF HUMIDITY IS 70% WITH THE MONTH OF MAY HAVING THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE AT 75%. IN THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY THRU DECEMBER THE PREVAILING WINDS ARE SOUTHERLY WHILE IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY THE PREVAILING WINDS ARE NORTHERLY.




DESIGN STATEMENT
THE JAPANESE TEAHOUSE DESIGN CONCEPT FOR THIS PROJECT WAS BASED ON MULTIPLE JAPANESE CULTURAL CONCEPTS SUCH AS FUKINSEI, WA, SEIJAKU, AND SHIZEN. THE DESIGN OF THE PRIMARY SPACES WITH DIFFERENT SIZES/HEIGHTS CIRCLING THE ZEN GARDEN, SHOWING UNITY AND BALANCE THROUGH ASYMMETRY, REPRESENTS THE CONCEPT OF WA AND FUKINSEI. WHICH ILLUSTRATED THAT PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS CAN COME TOGETHER. SEIJAKU’S CONCEPT IS REPRESENTED BY BEING SURROUNDED BY WATER, WHICH ALLOWS GUESTS TO FEEL CALM AND AT PEACE EVEN ON A BUSY DAY. THE IDEA OF SHIZEN IS PORTRAYED IN THE DESIGN THROUGH THE USED OF NATURAL MATERIAL AND THE USE OF NATURAL PLANTS SURROUNDING THE JAPANESE TEA HOUSE, IN ALLOWING ONE TO FEEL AS BEING PART OF NATURE.
THE USE OF THE TATAMI MAT MODULE (3 FT X 6 FT) AS THE BASIC MODULE OF THE PROPORTIONING SYSTEM IN THE DESIGN WAS ANOTHER COMPONENT OF THE DESIGN. ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES AND UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY ARE OTHER REQUIRED CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE DESIGN.

PROVIDED THE EXISTING CONDITIONS, A COMPETENT PLAN WAS DEVISED TO CONSTRUCT AND COMPLETE SITE DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN SERVICES, EACH REVOLVING AROUND THE RESIDENTIAL SUBDIVISION LOCATED IN WALLER COUNTY.

THE PROJECT’S STRUCTURAL ASPECT INVOLVED DESIGNING A STEEL CANOPY FOR A GAS STATION. THE ENTERPRISE ENVISIONED AND DEPICTED ON THE SITE PLAN WAS INTENDED TO BE A 44,000-SQUARE-FOOT EXXON GAS STATION. THE TASK IS TO DESIGN A CANOPY FOR A 10-PUMP GAS STATION.
THE CANOPY HAS A TOTAL AREA OF 5,476 SQUARE FEET AND A WIDTH OF 152 FEET. THE LENGTH IS 36’. THE FOLLOWING DRAWINGS DEMONSTRATE THE ELEVATION DESIGN OF THE CANOPY, WITH A 15’ ROOF SLAB HEIGHT FROM THE BASE.

A TYPICAL W-SHAPED BEAM WAS CHOSEN BY DESIGNING THE HIGHEST STRESS OR EACH BEAM.
