The Chi:MADE Museum is a satellite museum in cooperation with the Chicago Academy of Science, Chicago Architecture Biennale, and the Chicago Architecture Center. The programmatic scheme provides a destination for park-goers, tourists, and individuals who wish to walk through and experience the epochal evolution of Chicago’s history in the built and natural environment.

Through both natural changes of landscape and ongoing humanmade construction, the way one generation views the city will be different from the generation to follow. The subversive pressure of the urban environment and the feeling of dense compaction of life can burden the well-being of humans within the confines of the city. Places like the North Pond in Lincoln Park can be seen as the antithesis of the city by providing a green space and quiet environment to decompress.

The Chi: MADE museum is a physical manifestation of the resiliency and adaptability of architecture, design, and the environment within the urban context.

The monolithic exterior facade speaks to material resiliency over time, protecting the fragile and ever-changing installations inside. The hanging floor plates from the superstructure frame create controlled compaction and expansion of the space and views of installations. By not placing fixed walls in the exhibition spaces, we can curate the space based on the needs of artists and works on display. The classrooms, workshops, reference libraries, and mechanical systems are within the design’s outer ring to accentuate the exhibition space’s floating nature.

Revolve: NYC is a mid-rise mixed-use building in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in New York City, New York, conceptualized to provide various housing options and programs to benefit both the tenants and users from the surrounding area. This building design includes a civic space for large gatherings on the ground level and a green space on the roof level that incorporates design influences from the adjacent Bella Abzug Park. The ground level also allows ease of movement from the bustling avenue to the west through the building and into the park to the east. The undulating louver systems on the sides and roof of the building are implemented as a form of passive cooling of the space. Diffusing the direct sunlight before entering the interior spaces creates far less demand on the cooling systems.

With a focus on bringing positive, proactive, and healthy lifestyles to the residents, Revolve has implemented vertical hydroponics to provide an efficient system for growing produce to feed the community that surrounds the site. A cyclical interaction between the tenants and the growth systems within the building allows for the reciprocity of consumption and production. Trained tenants maintain vertical hydroponics to plant and harvest produce that is then distributed to the other users.

Community members can volunteer their time to help provide an afterschool program that encourages school-age children to use the basement level of Revolve as a place to exercise, interact, and learn about renewable growth systems. The intention is to encourage the youth to grow as individuals and make a large difference in their community by providing a safe place for these positive activities within the city.

U r b a n S t u dy a n d Re v i t i l i z a t i o n P r o p o s a l : S a n L o r e n z o L i n k I n c o l l a b o r a t i o n w i t h D y l a n R i v e r a a n d R y a n Ve r M u l m San Lorenzo is characterized by the conformity of its shape due to the historical changes in the region’s infrastructure. Over time, this land has been cut and deformed by the Aurelian wall along the western edge, a large transportation highway banking along the eastern perimeter, the train station plateau to the south, and the striated housing blocks following historic roads to the north.

These historical markers create a soft dichotomy in design that differs from the traditional grid-city design of the Western world. Throughout the centuries, Rome has been seen as an archetype of infill design projects. Rather than sprawling unnecessarily, the urban design utilized the spaces available within what was already built to create new interventions.

The constructs of our design rely upon the dichotomy of the plan and elevations. The plan implies conformity to the urban systems in place surrounding the site. The two buildings align to the roadways yet terminate when they arrive at the junctions of the transportation passages. This creates additional striations in the overall context of the region and provides a built barrier that envelopes the green pathway passing through the middle of the site. This green passage transitions the piazza spaces on each extent of the site into a canopy of stone pines, secluding the user from the urban infill and protecting their experience of the rehabilitated mausoleum in the center of the sprawling forest. The longitudinal section of the site responds to the conditions of dissonance to the context of the surrounding city. Using large blocks of mixed-use space suspended by a superimposed structural framing system creates an additional contemporary infrastructural program that everyone in the community can use. These masses control the void spaces in between and create areas of pressure in thresholds and releases into the open spaces.

This urban design allows for the creation of a micro-city that provides housing, commercial space, business flats for companies and startups, exterior gathering space, and a civic center that overlooks the stratified layers of the Aurelian wall. Nestled underneath the civic center is a submerged piazza that can be utilized for community events such as music festivals, theatrical performances, and overall neighborhood gatherings.

The following works are creative projects I was able to produce outside of architecturally focused ciriculum. From sketchwork to painting, modelling to photography--it all impacts the way designers think and see the world. Though practicing the skills that architecture demands is crucial to the success of future designers, being able to create and find fullfilment in alternative styles and mediums of art leads to opportunities for inspiration to incorporate in to future work. Learning how to persist through learning curves of new project types and artistic mediums has taught me the importance of patience and embracing the iterative process. The first idea is almost never the final outcome. Trial and error is the foundation laid out for the masterpiece to come. Understanding how to step back and see the bigger picture leads to a deeper understanding about the connection humans have to expressing themselves through their work to others by conveying emotion and thought without having to say a word.
