UNSW FUTURE HUB
Summer 2022 | Randwick, NSW

THE ‘NEW NORMAL’
The Brief for UNSW’s newest Campus Building called for a design which facilitated the needs of students in a multi-story construction situated within the social heart of UNSW’s Lower Campus. As the site is adjacent to Alumni Lawn, Fig Tree Lawn, the Quadrangle, and the heritage listed ‘White House’, many considerations were undertaken in order to find a suitable design imposition that would not only serve to ehance the site and campus, but also tackle the needs for UNSW’s growth as a future educational flagship.
The design for the ‘UNSW FUTURE HUB,’ was one which responds to the site respectfully, yet creates a gesture and character unique to UNSW and the wider campus. Addressing the Western condition of Alumni Lawn, the design consists of a sweeping circular form which guides students around the site and through College Road. The curved facade also facilitates an internal auditorium and exhibition space in order to

open up to Alumni Lawn and better serve the needs of ongoing social activities. The Building is respectful in how it treats its surroundings, featuring a tapered ‘tail’ design that brings the smaller scale of Fig Tree, and extends out into the Larger scale of Alumni Lawn, achieved through height line connections to surrounding buildings. Internally, the building is home to several multi-use CATS rooms for various classes, as well as flexible co-working and Hybrid focused work spaces where walls and furniture can be changed and moved depending on the user requirements, this includes sun control, noise control and privacy issue.
Dealing with High Performance, the building was designed with the idea of wellbeing and sustainability in mind. Research has shown the positive effects of timber and natural materials when studying and learning. Through this, the design formatted the use of a Timber Glulam Di-
agrid Structure with CLT floor plates. This mass timber construction is 4 and a half stories above ground floor, where the Diagrid offers both lateral, and gravitational load bearings, and offers a more human experience to students through the exposed material and tectonic quality of the beams and columns. Furthermore, the building features 2 atriums which serve as stack ventilation systems, where thermal chimneys allow air pressure to draw cooler air in the summer and exhaust it through the roof. In winter the chimneys can be shut off allowing heat to radiate internally.

CHIPPENDALE COWORKING
Winter 2021 | Chippendale, NSW

REINVIGORATE + COLLABORATE

Chippendale’s demographic is largely young people who either study or work full time. However, many of the buildings in Chippendale are small with impractical kitchens and working spaces.
Presented with an opportunity to expand the Chippendale community, and bring together a younger demographic, our site consisted of a historic industrial brewing factory which was established in Chippendale’s 1800s. The brief required the re-purposing of the three-story brick building for coworking spaces that could be utilised by individuals or small companies as rent-able private office spaces and open collaborative areas. Furthermore, the adjacent site to the south was to be utilised for a community function based on the needs of Chippendale. Through this observation, the program was designed with three pillars, which includedEducating > Creating > Engaging.
The idea was to consider and design a space which would educate the Chippendale community, allowing them to create and attend to a hobby whilst growing in skill, and lastly to engage the rest of the community through showcasing these skills. This led me to designing a self-sustainable community garden which could be utilised by the community kitchen below. Locals would effectively be able to be educated on both cooking and agricultural skills, which could then serve the wider community through allowing food stalls and activities to take place in the park north of our site.
Through the concept phase, I was inspired by lightweight steel structures, which could effectively ‘latch’ onto the existing building as to not disrupt the heritage and history of the existing site. This steel structure was angled strategically to allow sunlight to flood the community garden space, whilst offering an open and relaxing

space which served as a threshold between the public community garden, and the more private coworking spaces.
Structurally, the building implements large steel beams to allow open and functional spaces for the ground floor kitchen. Mechanical ventilation stacks run from the kitchen up through the extension and create exposed ‘chimneys’ which expresses the architectonics of the building and its functions. This extension also serves as a solar chimney, capturing heat in its roof and naturally ventilating the connected spaces.

SOFALA GALLERY
Winter 2019 | Sofala, NSW

EMBRACING RUST
Sofala is a small rural town situated within the scenic valleys of the Blue Mountains, NSW. Its site is historic in nature, featuring a naturally-flowing river where people would gather pieces of gold throughout its system.
Our brief was to construct an art gallery and artist residence that would explore and embrace the history of Sofala whilst showcasing local artist works. After visiting a nearby township, my appreciation for historical and weathered architecture inspired me to design an art gallery which embraces the beautiful aging of materials such as corrugated iron and timber. Through the construction process, the idea was to design a pavilion like structure which ran parallel to the river, featuring materials such as corrugated iron, corten steel and hardwood timber for the external landscaping.
During the concept phase, I was interested in precedents which explored the idea of indoor/ outdoor relationships. I felt this was a vital aspect to the architecture as I wanted people to feel as if they could be a part of the Sofala landscape, and see out into the large trees and river from a sheltered pavilion structure. Conceptually, the design’s northern facade is openly glazed, which maximises views outwards along the river, allowing a connection between those within the gallery space and those on the external decking along the river.

The gallery itself was designed with flexible functionality in mind. The gallery space features three unique ‘shed-like’ structures which allow light to permeate in from the ceiling in a controlled manner using in-direct and diffused lighting likened to Louis Kahn’s Kimbell Art Mu-
seum. The sheds are able to open up to each other, or be closed off depending on the spatial requirements and curation of art pieces.
The rest of the site includes private staff offices, an open-space artist studio for varying purposes, and an on-site artist residency which is disconnected to the gallery for privacy. All of this is tied together through natural external landscaping which seeks to minimise the impact of construction of the landscape, instead the pavilion is ‘propped’ up onto the landscape as if floating over the river.
