Inujima Videos

This creative video uses graphics like maps, paper cut outs and models to illustrate the location, history, size and name of the island of Inujima. It recounts visually how the granite quarrying industry quite literally shaped the landscape of the island, as well as its culture and demographics, and the relationship between its industries, human residents and the natural environment.

Learn about the small island of Inujima in Japan's Seto Inland Sea and the relationship between the rise and fall of its industries and its population.
The video traces the rise of the island's industry, with granite quarrying peaking in the late 19th century and the establishment of a copper refinery in 1909, boosting its population to 5-6000 people, and its subsequent decline over the 20th century, leaving fewer than 50 residents today.

Hear some of Inujima's residents, mostly senior citizens, share their memories of life and lore on the island. They explain how the Art Project has helped the island recover from its industrial scars and how learning about the art works and other new skills, gardening, cleaning and keeping active around the art galleries, and interacting with visitors have added meaning and purpose to their daily lives.
