VEREENIGING. - Spectators were in for a treat when the South African representitive Sprint Racing Team tested their skills against team USA. The first round was held at the Ultimate Raceway in town on Saturday, January 21. Eager spectators arrived early and waited patiently for the newly tarred track to settle before racing could start. It was an extremely hot summer afternoon, but later in the afternoon Mother Nature surprised the 2 500 spectators with strong winds, followed by a cloudburst. But not even the rain could dampen the spirits and most of the spectators took it in their stride. Racing continued but the Sprints division had to wait until Sunday afternoon to settle the score. The fastest qualifiers for final positions were Brian Lay for team USA and Adries Marx for team SA. But it was victory for Lay, followed by crowd favourite Jacques Roos and Marx in third place. This resulted in SA taking the lead with 253 points and USA 184 points. * The next local race (Round 3) between the two teams is on February 4.

The main attraction of the day was the Sprints division where team SA took on team USA.

Moving forward with the Kgatelopele initiative The recent launch of the Kgatelopele Youth Development Programme will see young people from Midvaal become entrepreneurs addressing service delivery challenges.

MEYERTON. - Midvaal Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr Bongani Baloyi recently delivered his promise of youth empowerment through the official launch of the Kgatelopele Youth Development Programme. The event was attended by the Kgatelopele participants, their parents, local businesses and community members. Kgatelopele, which means moving forward, will see some young people hailing from Midvaal become entrepreneurs of social change through addressing service delivery challenges in the municipality. Baloyi reiterated the importance of the programme and how the municipality intends on partnering with young people. “The objective of this promise is to ensure that the municipality utilises its resources and invests in the development and empowerment of the Youth. “The municipality intends on partnering with

young people in addressing service delivery challenges as social entrepreneurs. The programme is not a job opportunity and no stipends will be paid to participants but it is an opportunity for the participants to develop and empower themselves so that they have the ability to create jobs and employ community members.” The Executive Mayor further emphasised the municipality’s commitment to the programme and that it will be rolled out again in the new financial year. rate of only about 9.5% a week. This is a far cry from the National Department of Water and Sanitation’s required 15%. Water rationing measures will initially be implemented from 20:00 to 06:00 every night. This means that there will be no water during these hours in the affected areas, especially in the high lying areas such as Evaton, Evaton North, Lakeside, Evaton West, Roshnee and Rust-ter-Vaal, while the low lying areas such as Vanderbijlpark’s eastern part will experience a very low water pressure. During this period, the Vanderbijlpark areas will still receive little water because of the water stored in the reservoirs. If these measures do not achieve the required 15%, the municipality will ration water during the day as well, says Gaba. During similar rationing last year, higher lying Vanderbijlpark areas such as the central business district and the CW residential areas were particularly affected. The municipality urges residents to continue adhering to water restrictions and implement water saving measures. Restrictions include no watering of gardens during the day, no use of hosepipes, and no filling of swimming pools. Water saving measures include fixing of leaking pipes, taking five minute showers instead of using a bathtub, and using a cup to brush teeth. VEREENIGING. - Hundreds of thousands of Mzansi people spent the festive season in different ways. Bishop Simon Mokoena of Tirano Apostolic Church set some time aside to open his hands and heart to feed three centres of need. Mokoena could not enjoy the festive season while the majority of these centres were in such dire need, struggling to make ends meet and put bread on the table.

The Bishop was touched when attending his branch in Meyerton recently. He listened to how the owners of the centres struggled to survive. Without a second thought, Mokoena invited three needy centres in the region - Sibonile-Rebone Care Centre from Steelpark, Vereeniging, the Childrens’ Orphanage and Mentally Health centres from Orange Farms. Mokoena said. “Actually, the centres deserve money for upliftment. Food and money

are necessary to keep the candle burning through the year.” He stressed that the centres need to be empowered financially. The founder of the Sibonile-Rebone, Bonie Peacock, could not hide her excitement: “It was a blessing when my centre was among those to receive food parcels. “The food should feed more than twenty patients for the next three months. To me it was a big surprise. Looking at the hundreds

of centres in dire need of food. “The man of God is always praying with us to live healthy lives. Before Mokoena jetted out, he laid hands on sick people and prayed for them.” The three-year-old Sibonile Centre is renting in a private house. Monthly rental is holding the centre back. “It is our prayer that a good Samaritan rescues patients with suitable accommodation,” she said.

Danielle’s husband was busy inside with Clyde's dad (Max) when so meone opened the canopy and Clyde somehow managed to get out. No one informed him. It was only after he was finished with Max he noticed Clyde is missing. He tried to catch the dog but failed. They searched the entire Saturday and Sunday and posted on various websites in the area and phoned all the vets and the SPCAs from Vereeniging to Sa solburg. It was then mentioned that there were people at the window when her husband was inside the vet but they claim that the canopy was closed after they left. Clyde’s family love and miss him to bits and would like him home safe please. There is a reward out for Clyde's safe return. Child Development What you need to know about Meares-Irlen Syndrome This past week has been a hectic one for parents. Everyone is in back-to-school mode, shopping for uniforms and last minute stationery. With all this rush and excitement, many parents seem to forget the more serious parts of your child’s schoolgoing career, such as the important need for an annual eye examination. Whether your child has just started grade 1, or has merely entered the next grade, a routine eye test can improve many aspects of your child’s life. It is much more than just clear vision. Sometimes children struggle with simple tasks, like, copying correctly from the blackboard, seem to be working too close to their books while doing homework or when writing, complain of frequent headaches or display a lack of interest in their academic performance – all this because they simply not seeing well. While there are many other reasons your child could be experiencing problems in school, an eye examination can possibly identify the problem or rule it out. One such condition which can cause your child to experience visual stress, leading to difficulties with fine

vision tasks, such as reading, is Meares-Irlen Syndrome. A child with apparently normal sight can complain that reading causes discomfort. It may appear to them that the page is too bright, the words are moving around or jumping off the page, or perhaps seem to be flickering. As a result of this difficulty, your child will read more slowly and hesitantly, skip words or lines, lose their place while reading and struggle to comprehend. Ultimately, this causes headaches, eye strain and avoidance, where your child may seem to be playful and dis-interested in their academics. Meares-Irlen Syndrome is commonly found in dyslexics, but it is not exclusive to them. It can also affect epileptics, people who suffer from migraines and others as well. No Limits Trampoline Club - giving children opportunities VEREENIGING. - No Limits Trampoline Club was established in 1999 by a supporting mother of a now retired Protea gymnast (trampolinist). It is a non-profit organisation with branches in Kibler Park, Vereeniging and Sebokeng, No Limits has always been about giving children opportunities that change their lives. They produced many South African Champions who have gone on to represent South Arica in the international arena.

Die gat wat deur munisipale werkers van Ngwathe gegrawe is om ’n pyplek reg te maak, lê al maande so oop by dié gevaarlike kruising. Vlooimark bied baie aan besoekers Die De Deur-vlooimark en vendusie bestaan reeds baie jare en word elke jaar net groter en gewilder. Daar is ook nie net kommersiële items by dié vlooimark te koop nie, dit is ‘n lushof vir “skattejagers” en versamelaars van oudhede.

VEREENIGING. - 27-year-old hip-hop artist Lerato Seransa popularly known as ‘Supa’ recently recorded and released a single titled #NoToDrugs. In the song, Supa featured another talented artist named Noxman. According to Supa, the song is aimed at aggressively combating the excessive abuse of drugs in the Vaal communities. “The song speaks directly to the drug consumers, warning them on how this may negatively impact their lives. It also highlights that if they do stop taking drugs and become positive, their lives can be a whole lot better.” Supa states this is a perfect time for communities to hold hands and fight the use of drugs in the community. “Normally stats

Perpetrators believe that drugs make them fearless and is a problem solver, but that is untrue.” He hopes that the community will embark on a #StopDrugsCampaign. “My hope is to get all young people involved in this movement. Local municipalities can be directly involved too, so all Vaal residents can realise how serious this issue is. I feel we have a serious problem at hand and we are doing nothing about it. This is the time we boldly say #NoToDrugs.” Hiphop singer Supa has released a song dubbed #NoToDrugs in a plight to bring drug awareness to the community.
