drivers that had been at the rank. It is reported that an unknown man opened fire on the deceased and subsequently fled the scene. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the man as he succumbed to the gun-shot wounds. Ten lives lost to taxi accidents in two days Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - The Vaal is covered by a dark cloud, since Waterdale Road in Boiketlong claimed one life on Tuesday and on Thursday the R82 (the Old Johannesburg Road) claimed nine lives in the space of two days. Unfortunately, Emmanuel Lereko Ntsheu was one of the persons who died on the scene in the Waterdale Road. The family and wife of the deceased came to the scene to confirm his identity. It is alleged Ntsheu was on the sidewalk when he was killed. Police spokesperson Captain Aubrey Moopeloa said the deceased is originally from Limpopo. The accident occurred at around 07:30 in the morning when three vehicles collided, two Quantums from Vereeniging and a bakkie. “How the accident occurred is still a mystery that needs intensive investigation, said the police spokesperson. Meanwhile on Thursday a taxi accident on the R82 in Walkerville claimed nine lives.

It’s understood the taxi veered across the road and slammed into a concrete bus stop when the driver tried to avoid a car in front of him. “Two people were left critically injured, while four others sustained serious injuries, said Moopeloa. ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said all those who were injured at the scene were transported to nearby hospitals. Vermaak said, “The majority of them were ejected as the taxi overturned several times. The exact circumstances are not yet known, but it’s understood the taxi was the only vehicle involved in this incident. According to preliminary investigations between police, traffic, ER24 and Netcare, “The driver said something happened with the vehicle in front of him. “He swerved and lost control. The taxi headed into the concrete bus stop. “This, through the impact, ripped the entire taxi apart.

R82 (Old Johanesburg Road) recently claimed nine lives. 11 were critically injured.Â

Operation â€˜Vat Alles’ leaves illegal immigrants’ businesses in limbo Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - At least 98 illegal immigrants whose asylum seekers’ documents had expired, are waiting to be deported. The police conducted an operation “Vat Alles. The suspects nabbed are mostly Nigerians, Zimbabweans, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis. This comes after they infringed the Immigration Act. The Regional Police Cluster, Reaction Task Team, Health Department, Crime Prevention, the Vaal Rand Flying Squad, Immigration and Home Affairs Departments had their hands full. Police raided and nabbed illegal business owners, drug dealers; they closed several illegal drug dealers’ houses and shebeens, includ-

ing one of the main hotels in town. Colonel Mncedisi Mabala, regional Visible Policing Cluster Commander, said they managed to load two trucks with illegal alcohol at the Manhattan Hotel on Beaconsfield Avenue. In terms of the Liquor Act, the owner failed to produce legal documents, he said. A few suspected prostitution nests were also closed. The operation followed the recent attacks on houses suspected of drug-dealing and prostitution. The operation started early last week before it was slowed down by the heavy rains. According to the Movement Control Systems Act used by the Department of Home Affairs, it was discovered that some of the immigrants’ documents had expired years ago.

Many flock to Vaal Dam

The local immigration service officer contacted the national immigration identification system in Pretoria and it was discovered that the committee had declined to renew their asylum seekers permits. “Based on this information, all the illegal immigrants are liable for deportation,â€? said Mabala. The police are not involved with the Immigration Department. “Our duty is to hand over all suspected foreigners for verification. “The refugees committee decides who gets deported.â€? Stop this taxi carnage! on our roads are deemed to be un-roadworthy! The Traffic Department together with other stakeholders involved in the industry must embark on a drive to impound un-roadworthy vehicles. This can be done through well managed road blocks and vehicle inspections at the taxi ranks, also to search for illegal firearms which kill drivers and owners at will such as with the story in page 1. Officers need to be trained on how to conduct vehicle safety checks and work rigorously to

identify and prosecute offenders. I agree with one person who once said that, “We are in dire need of an all in one vehicle testing, compliance and driver competency centre.” He suggested a facility that would offer the following: • All public transport vehicles (including taxis) are tested annually for road worthiness. • All public transport drivers (including taxi drivers) should be required to undergo a rigid competency test annually in order to retain their drivers licence;

• Tracking devices must be installed in public transport vehicles. The device would be an aid to assist the traffic dept. in managing taxi activity along taxi routes. It could record taxi speeds, illegal stops and the use of the emergency lane. No roadworthy certificate means no vehicle licence and yes if the speed cameras are all linked up to a National Data Base the taxi driver will be brought to justice. Wouldn’t this be better? Cable thieves behind bars

Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - Seven cable thieves, including two from Limpopo, Lesotho and a security guard from pump station 17 are behind bars. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda said other suspects are from Boipatong and Sharpeville. It has been alleged that the thugs went out during the night, dug out the cables and unearthed road sign boards on the R59. After this work, they made a fire to burn the cable jackets (plastic covers) and the road signs. Later they sold the metal to a scrap yard. Police saw thick smoke from a bush and followed it on March 3. The Department of Electricity at the Emfuleni Local Municipality said the total cost of the damage is estimated at R227 430 and that increasing cable theft has struck alarm bells. Road signs are also being vandalised for sales at scrapyards. “This is a risk for pedestrians and motorists who roam about in the dark, making

it difficult for them to find their destinations, said an official. A Mafoko security guard was employed by Emfuleni while the Time Change security is subcontracted. The names of the suspects have been released as, Morake Mokoena (21), William Rakamina (28), Tsietsi Hout (28), Sipho Khumalo (33), Elias Manoto (28) and Thap-

elo Frank (19). Funda said the suspects appeared briefly in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court on Monday. “The matter has been postponed for further investigation and formal bail application.” They will appear again on March 10, said Funda.

Community celebrates Wetland Day Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG, - The Emfuleni Local Municipality, Metsi-a-Lekoa, Phaphamang Environmental Organisation and different government departments, met under the theme: ‘Wetlands for disaster risk reduction.’ The event was hosted as part of the Wetland Day Campaign recently. The main event started at Zone 3, Sebok-

eng, on February 24. The activities started with the community attending a workshop about the importance of Wetland Day. They were later supplied with gumboots, plastic bags and iron rods to clean the environment. Young trees were donated for planting; the grass was cut and litter was picked up.

Itsebeng Primary School learners listen attentively to one of the MetsieLekoa workers explaining the importance of wetlands and the environment.

The community was advised not to dump in a wetland, to instead wait for the municipal trucks that comes once a week. The community was taught that dumping slowly kills nature, and destroys the wetlands and the beauty of the environment. Wetland Day is celebrated annually on February 2. Two primary schools including Itsebeng ere visited by the workers of the

Musical League one of a kind Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG.- A Sharpeville resident, Tebogo Lesito has created a music league called Mmino League. This Vaal launched music league has been running for quite some time and Sedibeng Ster was invited to witness its progress recently. According to sponsorship officer Stheliswa Beja, the league has attracted many choral groups across Gauteng. “This year we have groups like Duduza SM from Duduza, Suave Voices from Kwa Thema, LT Blight from Vosloorus, uBuhle from Vosloorus, Balatedi from Mabopane,

Balitsi from Sharpeville and St Hosea from Sebokeng,” said Beja. She mentioned that the league is the only choral music project of its kind. “The choirs perform in seven different categories which are Original Composition, Cross Over, Set Work, Traditional, Gospel/Faith Music, Dramatic Acts and Solo Acts. “Most choir music projects rely solely on adjudicators to decide on the outcome of performances but our inclusive system of adjudication also considers the opinion of our audience and guild. This approach is a confirmation that our presentations are designed for the benefit of all in attendance,” explains Be-

Mmino League seems to take over the new chorus music style by storm. Pho tos: Mduduzi Mathebula.

Emfuleni Local Municipality and Metsi-aLekoa. The children were taught more about wetlands and that it is a water area that can sustain animal and plant life, but that it is not optimum for human consumption “Wetlands are not made for dumping. “People should keep the wetlands in a clean and natural state which will provide a home for animals and plants.” .

ja. Lesito added, “The mission to create awareness and interest in choral music is an evolving discipline by designing and managing an engaging programme that will promote South Africa’s diverse cultures.” He stated that in Gauteng where the Music League takes the competition, there is a need for community upliftment in terms of talent showcasing and also poverty eradication. “This project provoked youth involvement into a positive attitude lifestyle and mindset, thus getting them off the streets.”

Sedibeng Choir from Vaal left the Pretoria Hall and the audience in awe when they set the house of fire with their dynamic music on Satur day.

Mother seeks help for ‘druggie’ Mduduzi Mathebula

EVATON.- The Community Policing Forum (CPF) of Evaton tried their all to help a mother of a ‘nyaope’ addict but their efforts proved fruitless since the young addict relapsed recently. According to his father, he was trying everything to stop but the addiction was too much 18-year-old, Teboho Mokoena. The mother invited Sedibeng Ster to their shack in Evaton were they live as a family. On arrival at the shack, there was no electricity as it was alleged that the young addict had stolen the electricity circuit. The devastated mother told Sedibeng Ster that life had been a living hell ever since her boy had started using the dangerous drug. “He was the hero and the hope of the house. He completed his matric. After that he loitered around since he could not further his studies. One day he started changing,” said his mother Ntswaki Mokoena. Dipolelo Mokoena, sister, said she was puzzled by her brother’s behavior and how he could throw away everything he had worked for. According to the sister and mother, Teboho stole most of the household appliances. Sedibeng Ster can attest to the condition the family were found living in which is disastrrous. Rain was pouring into their home. “I want him to find help,” said the sad mother. Mzwakhe Msibi from the Toughest Young Minds (TYM), an organisation that works on helping people who are drug-hooked said they could help and that they will try to see how they can get the young man into a rehabilitation programme.

ArcelorMittal promotes wellness

Lazarus Dithagiso

BOPHELONG. - With the aim to encourage young people in the community and promote sports and wellness, the steel giant ArcelorMittal South Africa recently joined hands with Exxaro. The CEO of Mittal, Wim de Klerk and the executive manager of Exxaro embarked on a cycle tour. The cycle tour stopped at the Tshepong Home, Sebokeng, Youth Life and Boipatong before it proceeded to the Asedi Centre, Dirang Ka Kgotso Drop-in Centre and the Bophelong Multi Disability Centre. The tour included the corporate social investment project in Sebokeng and Evaton.

De Klerk said the participation in cycling does not represent the demographics of the country. “We need to do more to encourage children to get involved in cycling and provide access to the sport.” The 25km tour started at Mittal, Sebokeng Science Centre. It was the company’s flagship CSI project. The learners are exposed to specialised tutoring in science, maths and life skills. The aim is to improve their results and enhance their opportunities for further study. As part of the pilot project, five successful young applicants will become part of the ArcelorMittal Cycling Club. They will be mentored by experienced cy-

clists. Mittal will buy bicycles and cycling kits for five people. Themba Sepotokele communication officer at Mittal, said the children will learn the value of hard work, dedication and goal setting. He said they partnered with Exxaro because they have a mutual interest in using sport in community development and run a mountain biking academy. “Mittal involves all their employees in community development,” he said. The centre manager of Dirang ka Kagiso, Moeketsi Hlumbane and Semende Sithole, acting chairperson of Bophelong Multi Disability welcomed the cyclists with open arms.

full potential. I also challenge the Sebokeng Zone 11 community to bring their children for training at Katleho-Impumelelo Secondary School,” said Maqabe. Maqebe was one of the fighters who represented South Africa at the Japan Karate World Cup last November, although he did not do well. He said he was not happy with his performance. He could not prepare himself properly because he didn’t have the proper training equipment. He added “I was very disappointed with my performance because the fighters that I fought against came well prepared. If I had proper training materials I could have caused upset but I have learned my lesson.” Sensei Buti Maqabe will host the Karate Challenge. Photo: Zacharia Nale.

ZACHARI A NALE Not long ago TOUCHLINE did mention that one of these days a referee will die in the field of play if Safa doesn’t do something to protect the referees. This was after the game between Vaal Professionals FC and Orange Vaal Professional FC at Qedilizwe, three weeks ago, when soccer fans demanded the referee’s blood. TOUCHLINE has seen defenseless referees being attacked by either players or supporters in the past.

Just imagine a game being played without referees because they are scared to be attacked or assaulted. What happened recently in our local football is shocking when Ghetto Seven FC players and supporters apparently assaulted the referee. TOUCHLINE spotted this match official in serious condition, badly beaten. The question that TOUCHLINE asks is – how can we convince the young boys and girls to become referees if they read about, and see for themselves match officials being beaten? As things stand, there are not enough match officials, especially at LFAs level. TOUCHLINE blames Safa Sedibeng for failing to act on this matter a long time ago. For example, check some of the videos that are posted on social media of referees who run for their dear lives as they are attacked by spectators or players, especially in the SAB and ABC Motsepe Leagues. TOUCHLINE wishes that this incident will

be an eye opener for the football authority in this region. The problem is that this is not the first time that this has happened in Safa Sedibeng SAB League. One of the coaches recently slapped a referee but nothing has been done about that. Maybe that particular coach is bigger than our game and that is why Safa Sedibeng did nothing about this. Some of the reasons why coaches must attend a coaching course is to teach them how to behave professionally. But the problem is that some coaches behave like hooligans because they don’t have the right qualifications for coaching. Yes, coaching it is not about paper or qualifications but it is very important as coaches to empower yourself especially to understand the dynamic of football. Look, assaulting the referee is criminal! TOUCHLINE feels sorry for the coach that will be appointed to select the regional team. Another disaster waiting.
