VANDERBIJLPARK. - Charles Pringle, owner of Vaal Motor Spares and Battery Centre, has had to endure two break ins at this shop in the last few weeks. With the first break-in, the front window

was smashed and caused damage to the amount of R10 000. During this break-in only small items were stolen. A second break-in, also by smashing the front window, followed within weeks.

“Let’s hope this time some arrests will be made,” says Mr Pringle. “I work hard for all I have. But now I have lost R60 000 within six weeks.” This business is located opposite the Vanderbijlpark Police Station.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Vaal Bird Club had its bi-annual coordinated water bird count (CWAC) on Saturday January 28. At 06:30 in the morning, four boats went out from Stonehaven-on-Vaal covering a total of 43 kilometres along the Vaal River from the Barrage to the Suikerbosch River, including the Taaibosspruit. The total number of birds counted was 2 364. It was interesting to see the effect of the drought during 2016 when the total number of birds counted along the river was much higher at 3 390 in summer and 3 295 for winter counts respectively. After the good rain so far this year, the count reflected the same totals from the 2015 counts. One possible reason for this is that birds would congregate closer to the river during a

drought, since there is little water found in the field. 40 different species were counted which is less than the 45 species counted during January 2016. No new species were added to the total number of birds of 67 water bird species. The data gathered during a CWAC is sent through to the Animal Demographic Unit (ADU) at the University of Cape Town and is used for much needed water bird conservation around the world. The bird counts are fully sponsored by Stonehaven-on-Vaal and the members of the Vaal Bird Club would like to thank Stonehaven-onVaal for all their support during this and past counts. The Vaal Bird Club meets monthly on the second Monday of the month at 19:00 at the Old Mutual Building on the corner of Frikkie Meyer and Barrage Road. All visitors and new members are very welcome.

Kinders uit dieselfde gesinne sal moontlik geskei moet word en in aparte alternatiewe sorgsentrums geplaas moet word weens hul ouderdomsverskille. Drie stelle huisouers, drie huishulpe en ‘n maatskaplike werker gaan onder andere ook hul werk weens die sluiting verloor.

Vier-en-twintig kinders wat vir die eerste keer stabiliteit in kinderhuise leer ken het nadat hulle reeds die swaar kant van die lewe ervaar het, gaan opnuut getraumatiseer word as dié instansies moet sluit. Die kinders sal dan van vooraf ontwortel en uitgeplaas moet word. Die geregistreerde Kinder- en Jeugsorgsentrums (kinderhuise) van uMephi in die Vaaldriehoek, wat Villa Lubet (Vanderbijlpark), Trentico (Drie Riviere) en Deo Gratia (Rothdene) insluit, moet binnekort hul deure sluit as gevolg van finansiële beperkinge en onvoldoende staatshulp. Die staatsubsidie dek slegs sowat 45% van die lopende koste van dié huise. Daar is tans ‘n tekort van sowat R9 000 per huis per maand net vir die mees basiese behoeftes en dienste. “Ons rig hierdie noodkreet aan almal wat kinderhuiskinders en hul toekoms op die hart dra. Ons benodig die hulp van individue en besighede want ons is baie bekommerd oor ‘ons kinders’. R27 000 per maand is eintlik ‘n klein bedrag om drie huise se deure oop te hou en die toekoms van 24 kinders te beskerm,” pleit me. Elsabé Louw, maatskaplike werker verbonde aan uMephi. “Indien ons nie dringend aan die uitvoerende raad kan bewys dat ons R9 000 per huis per maand - ‘n totaal van R27 000 - kan insamel nie, sal ons deure binnekort gesluit word. Dit beteken dat daar alternatiewe blyplek vir 24 kinders gevind moet word. Voorlopige ondersoeke het aangedui dat dit nie ‘n maklike taak sal wees nie,” sê sy. Die hoofsaaklik Afrikaanssprekende inwonertjies is getraumatiseerde kinders in verskillende fases van aanpassing. Een van die huismoeders is al 11 jaar by die spesifieke huis en een van die seuns is by haar geplaas toe die huis geopen is. Na 11 jaar is die huismoeder sy “ma”. Hy ken geen ander ma of huis nie. Hy is een van die kinders wat nou uit dié geborge omgewing geruk gaan word en na ‘n nuwe, vreemde kinderhuis oorgeplaas sal moet word.

Geskiedenis van dié kinderhuise Gedurende 1995 is die Laerskool Peacehaven in Vereeniging aan die AGS Uitvoerende Welsynsraad gegee, wat dit aanvanklik gebruik het as ‘n toevlugsoord vir haweloses. Gedurende 1996 het dit duidelik geword dat die getal kinders wat opgeneem word, toeneem en dat daar ‘n behoefte aan ‘n kinderhuis in die area is. In 1996 is die toevlugsoord toe as Plek van Veiligheid en Kinderhuis vir 30 kinders geregistreer. Die getal kinders wat ingeneem kon word, is in 1997 na 80 verhoog. Gedurende 1999 het die AGS Uitvoerende Welsynsraad sy kinderprogramme geëvalueer en vanuit daardie evaluasie het die satelliethuisstelsel tot stand gekom. Redes was onder andere: • om kinders nader aan hul eie gemeenskappe/ ouerhuise te plaas, • om stigmatisering as die “kinderhuiskind” te verminder, • om die gemeenskap en kerke die geleentheid te bied om mede-verantwoordelikheid te neem vir die versorging van kinders in hul gemeenskap, • om die besigheidsgemeenskap die geleentheid te bied om by te dra tot die versorging van die kinders in hul area, • om die finansiële las op skole te verminder. ReportÂ isÂ racistÂ andÂ xenophobic Ms Shelagh Hughes of the Vaal Triangle writes: I would like to share my concern regarding an article in Vanderbijlpark Sterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s issue of 21-27 February 2017 titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fatal folly of hiring foreigners.â&#x20AC;? Both the title and the article are frighteningly racist and dangerously xenophobic. The premise of the article is that hiring foreigners to work for one increases oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s risk of violent crime at their or the hands of their associates. This was based on two incidents mentioned in the article and not on any reputable

references or statistics. Incidents of a similar nature are also perpetrated by South African citizens and it is not the citizenship of the criminal rather than their criminal nature that makes someone a risk to communities. In a week when so many law abiding and innocent people are being injured and threatened by Xenophobic attacks it is narrow minded and dangerous for your newspaper to spread fear and hate towards a whole group of people based on the behaviour of a few. The headline and paragraph are stereotyping foreigners and are in contradiction to the code which in this regard reads: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tendency to categorise others leads to stereotyping on the basis of sex, race, ethnicity, religion, country

of origin, neighbourhood, sexual preference, physical and psychological challengedness, political views etc. Stereotyping often strengthens incorrect perceptions of individuals or groups. Without limiting artistic freedom, stereotyping must be avoided wherever possible.â&#x20AC;? Ster apologises for the unfortunate stereotyping in our report. Rust-ter-Vaal hosts Inter Primary Athletics Some of the youngsters who took part in the meeting.

This Year Rust-ter-Vaal Primary School had the opportunity to host their Annual Inter Primary Athletics meeting. Each school that is part of the Vereeniging “Hoofdekring” has the opportunity to host this event every five years. The event was held on February 15 at Hoërskool Overvaal. The schools that participated at this event were from the “western circle.” They were Lerskool Handhawer, Selbourne Primary School, Arcon Park Primary, Laerskool Vryheidsmonument, Laerskool Unitaspark and Rust-ter-Vaal Primary School. Approximately 100 athletes from each school and all their educators were present. A ‘carnival’ theme was the order of the day. Rust-ter-Vaal had drum majorettes and a team of “Kaapse Klopse” to entertain the learners and parents. Educators from Rust-ter-Vaal were dressed in red to celebrate “Valentines Month.” Rust-ter-Vaal Primary School would like to thank their sponsors who made the event possible: Sedgars Sport, Bubbillee, Aupa Phadi Transport, Maverick Spur as well as Hoërskool Overvaal who made their facilities available to them.

Mozart-werke binnekort ook in Vredefort Op die plaas Deelfontein in die Vredefort Koepel is ’n musiekseminaarsentrum, die Koepel Kunstesentrum, waar daar sedert 2008 gereeld musiekkursusse, meestersklasse en konsertprojekte plaasvind – afgesien van ander aanbiedinge soos natuuruitstappies en handwerkseminare. Die fokusgebied van die sentrum is Vroeë Musiek. Klassieke musiek, oftewel ernstige kunsmusiek (om dit van populêre vermaakmusiek te onderskei), het ’n lang tradisie en het deur die eeue heen verskeie styl- en smaakveranderinge ondergaan. Die doelstelling van die Vroeë Musiekbeweging is om musiek van vorige tydperke in die konteks van die musikale uitvoeringsvoorstellings en met die instrumente van die

tyd waarin dit geskryf is, uit te voer. Aan die einde van Maart word Mozart se Requiem Mis in d mineur op oorspronklike instrumente uitgevoer, weer eens onder leiding van Antoinette Lohmann. Suid-Afrikaanse spesialiste in Vroeë Musiek, ’n paar oorsese musici, en ‘n vokaalensemble van 12 sangers werk mee aan die uitvoerings. Die werk word in Johannesburg, Pretoria, en in die NG Kerk in Vredefort uitgevoer. Dit sal die eerste keer in Suid-Afrika se musiekgeskiedenis wees dat die Requiem op historiese instrumente gespeel word. Meer inligting is op die webblad www.deelfontein.co.za beskikbaar. van Mozart in die NG Kerk Vredefort uitgevoer. Die Requiem van Mozart is die laaste komposisie van dié komponis en een waarom daar ’n menigte onopgeloste geheime en bespiegelinge verweef is. Wat die komende uitvoerings (in Johannesburg, Pretoria en Vredefort) besonders maak, is dat die werk op die oorspronklike instrumente, soos dit in Mozart se tyd gebruiklik was, uitgevoer sal word, en ook met ‘n klein kamerkoor, soos dit in die destydse omstandighede sou gebeur. Die konserte word deur die Koepel Kunstesentrum, wat sedert 2008 kursusse en projekte in Vroeë Musiek (oftewel histories ingeligte uitvoeringspraktyk) aanbied, in samewerking met St John’s College in Johannesburg aangebied.

Die bekende sangsoliste Linelle Engelbrecht, Elizabeth Lombard, Nicholas Nicolaidis en Aubrey Lodewyk werk aan die uitvoerings mee, wat deur Ben Oosthuizen van St. John’s College gedirigeer word. Antoinette Lohmann, bekende barokvioliste van Amsterdam, voer die orkes aan. Slegs twee oorsese instrumentaliste, die klarinettis Teddy Ezra van Switserland, en die fagottis Wolfgang Mücke van Duitsland, is vir die samestelling van die orkes nodig, wat wys hoe ver Vroeë Musiek in Suid-Afrika reeds ontwikkel het. VEREENIGING. – About 450 Ward Committee members were inducted last week by the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) under the office of speaker Maipato Tsokolibane. The induction which ran over two weeks was aimed at equipping the community representatives with the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their functions effectively within their various wards. There are 45 wards in Emfuleni and for each ward, ten ward committee members have been elected as agents who will spread information about government and also ensure that government is also kept up to date with regards to issues affecting the people. Commissions were then held during the election to discuss various issues and resolutions. Tsokolibane emphasised the importance of having ward committee members as a link between local government and the community. “The key function of ward

committee members is to share important information with members of the community regarding projects underway by the municipality. “Our people, through the ward committees, should know that government is aware of their problems.” Topkolibane also said that the ward committee will help lessen protests in the community as they will be acting in the interest of community members.
