Jan Vorster Optometry donates 201 frames MEYERTON. - The Lions Club of Henley on Klip would like to formally thank Jan Vorster Optometrists, located in Loch Street, Meyerton, for their generous donation of 201 frames to Project Bright Sight. This project is a Lions Club International initiative that seeks to offer affordable prescription glasses to those who can’t afford traditional optometry. Operating out of the Child Welfare offices in Meyerton on the corner of Van Der Bijl and Meyer Street together with the help of the University of Johannesburg’s Optometry students and Jan Vorster Opto-

metry, The Lions Club of Henley on Klip provides spectacles at R190 per pair of single-vision or “readers” and R500 for bifocals (done through Jan Vorster Optometrists in Meyerton). This happens on the first Saturday of every month. “This is an important project that in recent months has helped a 90 year old grandmother to see her grandchildren clearly for the first time and a Grade 1 pupil be able to learn to read. We thank Jan Vorster once again for always supporting our club and this wonderful initiative,” says Lions President Kerry Palmer.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Vaal Bird Club had its bi-annual coordinated water bird count (CWAC) on Saturday January 28. At 06:30 in the morning, four boats went out from Stonehaven-on-Vaal covering a total of 43 kilometres along the Vaal River from the Barrage to the Suikerbosch River, including the Taaibosspruit. The total number of birds counted was 2 364. It was interesting to see the effect of the drought during 2016 when the total number of birds counted along the river was much higher at 3 390 in summer and 3 295 for winter counts respectively. After the good rain so far this year, the count reflected the same totals from the 2015 counts. One possible reason for this is that birds would congregate closer to the river during a

drought, since there is little water found in the field. 40 different species were counted which is less than the 45 species counted during January 2016. No new species were added to the total number of birds of 67 water bird species. The data gathered during a CWAC is sent through to the Animal Demographic Unit (ADU) at the University of Cape Town and is used for much needed water bird conservation around the world. The bird counts are fully sponsored by Stonehaven-on-Vaal and the members of the Vaal Bird Club would like to thank Stonehaven-onVaal for all their support during this and past counts. The Vaal Bird Club meets monthly on the second Monday of the month at 19:00 at the Old Mutual Building on the corner of Frikkie Meyer and Barrage Road. All visitors and new members are very welcome.

Suid-Afrikaanse spesialiste in VroeĂŤ Musiek, â&#x20AC;&#x2122;n paar oorsese musici, en â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;n vokaalensemble van 12 sangers werk mee aan die uitvoerings.
