Two killed in Meyerton accident MEYERTON.- Two people were killed and three others were injured on Karee Road in Meyerton on Sunday. At approximately 3.30pm on Sunday, paramedics from ER24 and Midvaal Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene where they found the vehicle a few metres away from a tree. Two men were found outside the vehicle with fatal injuries. It is believed that they were ejected when the car crashed into the tree. Three men were found inside the vehicle with injuries ranging from moderate to severe. The Midvaal Fire and Rescue team had to use the jaws of life to free them from the wreckage. Once freed, paramedics could remove them from the vehicle and treat them for their injuries. The injured men were transported to Sebokeng Hospital for further care. His experience in service delivery apparently prompted his senior to deploy him to serve as Vispol Commander in De Deur, starting on January 1. Immediately after he took over from Lt Col M Malaka, Gulashe did not look back. First thing on his diary, he engaged to revive with some of the defunct Community Policing Forum. Community service is close to his heart. “De Deur is big, I have plans on how we going to tackle crime. After having travelled, meeting with residents in the area, we are going to fight crime tooth and nails,” he said. “It’s about time criminals lose focus. The community should not be frightened by criminals. “It’s about time we restore dignity by dealing away with fear. “Like it or not, we are going to install bravery within households” he said. The area of concern is the R82 or the Old Johannesburg/ Vereeniging Road. The road is plagued with hijackings and prostitution has become a norm. Gulashe said that Police will manage to close the criminal floodgates from the north of Johannesburg. “Already I have engaged community patrollers, reservists and Police. We have enough police and vehicles in terms of our organograms.” The area, with three sectors is very big and

manageable. De Deur station includes Walkerville, Dream Land, Thula Mtwana, Savanna City, Lakeside Estate, Tshepomg, Debonair park, Teddy Field, Apple Orchards, Rust-terVaal, Roshnee. Gulashe can be contacted on (016) 590 9215 or 071 675 7291 or Community Service Centre (016) 590 9208.

VEREENIGING. - Police are investigating a case of intimidation with the intent to kill after the chairperson of the Vereeniging Citizen Patrollers received a telephonic death threat recently. The victim, Mokete Ketsise, said the caller could not speak fluent English. “The caller told me that they know where I stay and that they were coming to me soon. He said that they aree going to burn down my house.” According to Ketsise the caller further said, “Our Nigerian brothers have closed drug shops fearing arrest. They can’t do business any longer. All this is because of you.”

Ketsise suspects that this comes after the community recently marched to hand over a memorandum of grievances to the Vereeniging Magistrates Court, the Police and the By-Law Unit of the Emfuleni Local Municipality: “We simply demanded that Law Enforcement, By-laws Unit and the Magistrates Court sharpen their teeth against drug dealers, prostitution and no service delivery.” Police spokesperson Captain Fekile Funda confirmed that Ketsise had opened a case following the death threats. “We cannot say the suspect is a Nigerian until investigation has been completed.” Investigations continue.

Saved from inferno by snuff Mduduzi Mathebula

Nothing was left that Jane Statu could sal vage from her burned shack, Everything was in ashes.

EVATON. - A 34–year–old mother of two escaped death in an inferno in the early hours of the morning on Sunday. Fire erupted from nowhere, destroying everything and leaving her homeless and devastated, without anything to cling to. “My craving for snuff saved my life. I could have burned with my furniture,” said the homeless mother, Jane Statu. It was around 03:00 when Statu went to her sister’s shack a few metres away. She explained to Sedibeng Ster that she was looking for her snuff and she thought her sister was the one who took it. Statu and her sister live on the same stand in Evaton. When she went looking for it, little did she know that catastrophe was on it way. Within minutes her shack was on fire. “I do not know what caused the fire because no electrical appliances were on. I still believe someone might have wanted to kill me. “Thanks to my craving for snuff I could have died or even been killed in the fire,” said the traumatised Statu. Her two children were not around when this incident happened. Statu said they called the fire-fighters, who responded to the scene though the shack was already in ashes. “The shack was completely in ashes - there was nothing to save from the violent fire.

Neighbours and friends tried their best to help out, but they were a little too late,” said a neighbour. Statu’s ID and children’s birth certificates were all lost in the burned shack. The homeless Statu is pleading for help

VANDERBIJLPARK.Police cracked down on four suspects aged between 23 and 35, armed with an illegal 9 mm pistol and a .38 Special revolver with ammunition. This was after they allegedly robbed a American Swiss Jewellery store in Vaal Mall. The incident happened on Sunday at around 17:45. Police were patrolling in the vicinity of Bophelong when they were alerted to the presence of a suspicious vehicle with four occupants. The vehicle was stopped and, during a search, Police retrieved firearms. Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale said apparently five suspects stormed into the Vaal Mall where they overpowered a security guard and took his firearm. After the ordeal, they allegedly broke the jewellery store window and stole jewellery worth over R600, 000. Nearby security personnel arrested the suspects. One suspect sustained a serious injury during the shoot out. The vehicle was reported as the car allegedly used to commit several business robberies in the area. Three suspects briefly appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court on Tuesday and the matter has been remanded for further investigations, the other is under Police guard at the Sebokeng Hospital.

This was when Police handcuffed two temporary workers with zip-ties for allegedly being illegal immigrants. Mabuye apparently phoned the business owner who turned questions over to Police who all declined to speak to him. It is alleged that the officer publicly called Mabuye a ‘clever kaffir.’ “They acted like cowboys, singling out two foreign nationals,” Mabuye said. The officer, his name known to Sedibeng Ster, apparently threatened Mabuye with arrest for obstruction. “The officer furiously turned on me, saying, ‘You are a clever kaffir, I will sort you out for obstruction,” said Mabuye. If what was revealed by Statistician-General Pali Lehohla on Monday is to be believed, then we are in deep trouble. Last year around this time there was a lot of noise about #Fees must fall, and the information that is revealed by Lehohla is astounding in this regard. The statistician-general said that free higher education is possible, but black students will continue to fall out of the system without sufficient support at home and that not enough black and coloured children were successfully completing higher education, compared to their white

We are going nowhere! and Indian counterparts. “A number of factors contributed to this decline,” he said. Unlike in black and coloured populations, white, Asian and Indian communities invested in their children in a way that yielded continuous, generational results. Due to circumstances, blacks and coloureds had not managed to do the same. “But among blacks, year in and year out, if we had to fill a dam, that dam would never be full. In fact, we will increasingly, over time, empty that dam. “That is the kind of crisis that we have in education in South Africa. “One of the main reasons is poverty and

the absence of adequate support structures for black and coloured children at home. “Out of the 9.4 million youths in the country, 3.1 million are poor, Lehohla said. Of that 3.1 million, half are severely deprived of basic human needs such as food, safe drinking water, sanitation, health, shelter, education, and information. The Statician General said that this has a direct effect on their mental fitness and ability to utilise their brain at its optimum level Difficult cycle to break At the rate at which things are progressing, the aim of having a country with five million black graduates would never be reached.

A recent report said that although government has tried to address the basic needs of the poor, it may not have managed to plug all the holes, this can be further to the truth. Lehohla said free higher education for students who needed it was possible, it just depended on who would fund it. There is no free education, but certainly depending on your tax, who pays. It should be possible to have free education for those who need it. Following the reports and as things stand it seems like we have taken one step forward and twenty back, we are going nowhere slowly! Lerato wa ha Serero...

Council reimplements water rationing SEDIBENG.- Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) restarted its water rationing measures on Monday night, January 23, in an effort to force residents to save water. According to a media statement by Stan-

ley Gaba, Acting Manager of Communications at ELM, the municipality has no choice but to take this drastic step as voluntary water saving measures by residents have averaged a savings rate of only about 9.5% a week. This is a far cry from the national department of water and sanitation’s required 15%. Water rationing measures will initially be implemented from 20:00 to 06:00 every night. This means that there will be no wa-

ter during these hours in the affected areas, especially in the high lying areas such as Evaton, Evaton North, Lakeside, Evaton West, Roshnee and Rust-ter-Vaal, while the low lying areas such as Vanderbijlpark’s eastern part will experience a very low water pressure. During this period, the Vanderbijlpark areas will still receive little water because of the water stored in the reservoirs. If these measures do not achieve the required 15%, the municipality will ration water during the day as well, says Gaba. During similar rationing last year, higher lying Vanderbijlpark areas such as the central business district and the CW residential areas were particularly affected.

The municipality urges residents to continue adhering to water restrictions and implement water saving measures. Restrictions include no watering of gardens during the day, no use of hosepipes, and no filling of swimming pools. Water saving measures include fixing of leaking pipes, taking five minute showers instead of using a bathtub, and using a cup to brush teeth. ELM requests the public to report any water leakages or bursts pipes to the call centre on (016) 986 8366 or 016 986 8300 or alternatively contact the customer care manager via email at yeyakhe@emfuleni.gov.za. Gaba says the municipality is “improving measures to respond timeously to water loss in public areas”.

SEDIBENG.- Information on Sedibeng Ster’s desk reveals that teachers in Gauteng who marked 2016 National Senior Certificate exam papers have still not received full payment for their services. This is despite the fact that R1.3 billion was apparently approved by the Gauteng legislature to fund examination and education related services in the 2016/17 financial year. Disgruntled teachers are said to have said that despite having been paid a portion of the money owed to them, there is no indication from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) as to when they will receive the balance of their funds. The Gauteng Department of Education has however expressed its apologies saying that it sincerely apologises to all matric exam markers who have been affected

by delays with regards to their payments. “The Department is experiencing delays due to financial shortfall. However, a partial payment which included a 32% tax was effected based on the available budget. An approval for additional funds has been sought and the balance will be paid before the end of March 2017. Funds are available but the Department has applied to Treasury for approval to reprioritise from other programmes,” the department said. The Democratic Alliance (DA) urged the legislature to speed up the payment process. “It is unacceptable that the GDE cannot maintain prudent financial management to ensure that it pays for services rendered to it. The DA urges the MEC to intervene and avoid protest action planned for Friday as it will disrupt learning and teaching.”

Say no to drugs Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING.-27-year-old hip-hop artist Lerato Seransa popularly known as ‘Supa’ recently recorded and released a single titled #NoToDrugs. On the song, Supa featured another talented artist named Noxman. According to Supa, the song is aimed at aggressively combating the excessive abuse of drugs in the Vaal communities. “The song speaks directly to the drug consumers, warning them on how this may negatively impact their lives. It also highlights that if they do

stop taking drugs and become positive, their lives can be a whole lot better.” Supa states this is a perfect time for communities to hold hands and fight the use of drugs in the community. “Normally stats show that people involved in serious crimes, would be on heavy substance during the act. Perpetrators believe that drugs make them fearless and is a problem solver, but that is untrue.” He hopes that the community will embark on a #StopDrugsCampaign.

Mazibuko thanks the Almighty SEBOKENG.- Under the record label Mthiya Record Company based in Zone 12 Sebokeng, Jane Mazibuko recently released her fifth gospel album which includes a DVD called ‘Kea Leboga’. The songs in the 14-track album are personally written by Mazibuko who after being admitted to hospital in 2012 and overcoming many hardships in her life released this album to thank the Almighty God and her followers for being with her through ‘thick and thin’. “Through the hardships that I went through I have seen that God is great and can do wonders for everyone only if we believe. I have seen that God is there and want to tell everyone that He loves them,” said the excited Mazibuko. Teboho Tsebela, who is a Mthiya Record Company promoter said, “The Vaal has talent and we need to focus on it so as to develop more and more upcoming artists. As a record company we have embarked on a project to help local artists record free of charge. We will also be embarking on road shows. We will be unearthing further talent. Artists who wish to join us are free to contact us and we will gladly help them.” Two lucky

“My hope is to get all young people involved in this movement. Local municipalities can be directly involved too, so all Vaal residents can realise how serious this issue is. I feel we have a serious problem at hand and we are doing nothing about it. This is the time we boldly say #NoToDrugs.” Hiphop singer Supa has released a song dubbed #NoToDrugs in a plight to bring drug awareness to the community.

SEBOKENG. - As the 2017 academic year kick-started recently, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) PR Councillors treated learners from various schools to uniforms. Councillors Mzwakhe Mapei and Manini Mofokeng from ward 32 and 33 respectively, went out of their way to make sure that no children went to school without uniforms. The two dug deep into their pockets to bring happiness to pupils from Tshemedi and Matshediso Primary Schools in Zone 13. Mapei said some indigent pupils could not be neglected because of their backgrounds. His statement was echoed by Mofokeng. Asked if this was not part of preparation for the campaign, they responded, “This is the future generation. We cannot neglect Local

them, waiting until they are ready to vote. This is a democratic country. Every citizens has an obligation to decide.” Mapei said they were not thinking of elections, not for now or tomorrow. “Let’s change the lives of the children for a better future. “Not all parents can afford to change the lives of their children. I as a member of any community had to bury our pride. We do not want to be the laughing stock among other nations,” he said. “We can’t punish the children because of the negligence of their parents. That wouldn’t be right,” said Mofokeng. Queen Tejane, an educator and coordinator of the school uniform drive, said the school appreciates the work and contributions of councillors. “We trust the parents will sing the same tune of happiness,” she said.

Your children are used as ball boys ZACHARI A NALE TOUCHLINE writes this letter to all those parents whose children play football: Dear parents/guardians Please note, your children are no longer soccer players but ‘ball boys’ to grown men who want to play in the Super League. To make it worse some of those who fight to be on the starting lineup with your children also play for these so-called ‘social teams

or masters’ soccer teams. This is because some club owners want to win at all costs by bringing all those “tried and tested” players to play in the Super League. The question I ask myself is, “If club owners sign these old players to play in Super League where are the youngsters going to play, especially the u/19 players. Are they going to rot on the bench as is the case in SAB League as TOUCHLINE highlighted last week?” As far as TOUCHLINE is concerned the Super League is still part of development. Dear Parents, TOUCHLINE is worried

about the future of your children because they won’t grow as players sitting on the bench week-in-and-week-out. It is your responsibility as a parent to be concerned about your child’s future. TOUCHLINE blames local football administrators for allowing criminals to own soccer clubs in this region just because they want to win promotion. It is not a secret that most of those teams that gained promotion don’t deserve it. TOUCHLINE will tell you why: Over the weekend I was watching these newly promoted teams in SAB League and

you can tell that they don’t deserve to play in the league. How can a SAB League team lose 10-2? TOUCHLINE was also shocked to see some SAB League teams play league matches without nets. This is not street football or ‘sticks’! TOUCHLINE challenges all the parents whose children play football to go and watch them when they play and they will see what I’m talking about. Your children are now ball boys in the Super League. They train the whole week but come match day – their ‘elders’ are the ones that play.

Sharpeville to host boxing tournament Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE.- Sedibeng Boxing Organisation will host a Boxing Championship Tournament scheduled to take place in the Sharpeville Community Hall on January 28. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by the organisation’s chairman Morena Tsotetsi. Tsotetsi urges the Sedibeng community to fill the venue to capacity to support the boxers on the day. He said that it is the community’s responsibility to encourage their children to participate in sporting activities to keep them focused.

Tsotetsi revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport that on the day of the tournament they will select boxers who will represent Sedibeng in the Gauteng Boxing Championship that is scheduled to take place in East Rand on February 26. “Vaal is a home of champions when it comes to boxing. I’m happy that locals such as Bongani Mahlangu and Gideon Buthelezi also continue to hold the flag high and make this region proud. We as Sedibeng Boxing Organisation want to produce household names in boxing as was the case in the past,” he told Sedibeng Ster Sport.

ELFA introduces new age category Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG.- The Super League has already started and the Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELFA) junior soccer league is set to kick off in the first week of February. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by ELFA secretary Martin Mpholo. Mpholo told Sedibeng Ster Sport that the registration is open for the junior teams to affiliate. To make it interesting Mpholo said

this season they will introduce an u/10 league. He said that he believes that there is a need for this league as part of grass-roots programme. “The earlier we start the better and teams can come forward to register players and they must contact competitions coordinator Mr Mamphuthi Malepe. We also want to introduce u/10 league to bring more excitement to our football,” said Mpholo.

Ghetto Seven FC on the summit Ghetto Seven FC surprised many when they reached the MCS Sedibeng Soccer Tournament final last year December. This was a morale booster for the team as they started 2017 like a house on fire. Photo: Supplied

SEDIBENG.- Ghetto Seven FC is the most improved team in the Safa Sedibeng SAB League to date, playing an entertaining brand of football. This Sharpeville-based side is at the summit of the Safa Sedibeng League log with 10 points from four games.

They are set to be crowned the league champion at the end of the season even though the club director - Man Lebusa - was very diplomatic when Sedibeng Ster Sport asked him about the possibilities of his side winning the league title. Ghetto FC surprised many when they rea-

Vaal Milano FC is fourth on the log after accumulating eight points from five games they have played so far this season while Metro Stars FC is fifth on the log with the same number of points and games as Vaal Milano FC. Ratanda Fast Eleven FC, Sebokeng Ajax FC and Vereeniging Old Boys FC are tail-leaders. However, Sebokeng Ajax played their first SAB League match when they lost 3-2 to Vaal Milano FC over the weekend. It was their first game since they gained promotion to Safa Sedibeng SAB League last year. ched the finals of Safa Sedibeng Nedbank last December. As if this is not enough, they also reached the MCS Sedibeng Soccer Tournament finals. This is the form that sees them where they are right now. This is what Lebusa told Sedibeng Ster Sport, “Look, I don’t want to put my boys under unnecessary pressure saying we are challenging for the league. We take each game as it comes and our aim is to finish in a respective position because last season we were fighting relegation. I’m happy with the way we play and I want to thank those Super League teams with whom we played friendly matches as part of our pre-season preparations. They opened our eyes on how to play structured football.” Ghetto Seven FC came from one nil down to play to a 1-1 draw against Metro Stars FC at Isak Stadium on Friday night. It was end to end stuff but Ghetto Seven FC was the better team on the night, creating numerous chances but wasteful in front of goals. The draw is not a true reflection of the game. SEDIBENG.- Despite their 2-1 defeat at home to Dondol Stars FC, Orange Vaal Professionals FC still occupy second position in the ABC Motsepe League with 39 points from 19 games. When the club management appointed Isaac Mphasane as the head coach, little did they know that the man will turn this side into giant killers. In fact results are there for everyone to see, taking into consideration that Orange Vaal Pros FC fought for relegation last season. To add feathers to Mphasane’s hat, he was among the Emfuleni coaches who attended the C License Coaching Course held at the NWU Vaal campus

last year. Since his arrival the results are coming fast with former SuperSport United dreadlocked midfielder Pitso Lekone as his assistant. This season Orange Vaal Pros made some interesting signees by signing quality players. Meanwhile, Vaal Professionals suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of African All Stars FC away from home over the weekend. The team is languishing in position 12 on the log with 19 points from 19 games. To make things worse the three bottom teams will be relegated at the end of the season and Vaal Pros is facing the danger of facing the axe if they don’t move away from the relegation zone.
