Students move into Three Rivers Proper Carla du Plessis

VEREENIGING. - Residents of Three Rivers Proper in Vereeniging were recently angered when a group of about 20 students simply moved into a house in the high-class neighbourhood last week. According to community members the students together with their belongings were dropped off at premises on the corner of Suikerbos Drive and Wharee Lane by a bus. They are believed to be students from Limpopo who are studying at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). The greatest concern of the community over this new development is the impact it will have on the area. “If you look at other related areas in Emfuleni, this incident only presages problems. There are areas in Bedworthpark and SW7 in Vanderbijlpark that struggle with the same problem, and we are alarmed at the probability of noise, security threats and the increase of crime that could follow,” says DA Councillor Dalene Venter. Further, the

premises do not meet the requirements as set out by the Emfuleni Local Municipality’s by-laws to grant residency to a large number of people. Residents leapt to bring new development to a halt and the Emfuleni Local Municipality circulated an article of intentions to do so. “This area is not the only one that is overcrowded. There is a house in Touws Street in which about 15 students live, as well as a house in Kowie Street where more than 30 people live,” Venter said. As the investigations progress, further information will be given to the community on any new developments on the matter. Mpho Motsa, the brother of the owner of the premises told our sister newspaper, Vaalweekblad that they are helping the students until they can find alternative accommodation. According to Motsa, the students will be doing their apprenticeship in Meyerton and they are not paying rent. Students and their ‘stuff’ were recently dropped off on the corner of Suikerbos and Wharee Lane.

Older Person’s Act violated by old age home owner Moleboheng Chaha

SHARPEVILLE. - It seems that not only did the owner of Nrate-Nhlokomele Old Age Home fail to comply, but she also violated the Older Persons Act as explained by Older Person’s Social Work Official, Charlene McMillan. This was as a legal notice was handed over to Nthabiseng Tamane this week, following

the removal of all 15 elderly persons last week. Another site inspection was conducted by the Department of Social Development, ELMs’ By-law Unit and the Sharpeville SAPS. During the site inspection, Tamane was ordered to open up the medicine cabinet, but she claimed that the key was lost. According to Mcmillan, Nrate -Nhlokome-

le was not operating in conjunction with the Older Persons Act. “The centre failed to provide a 24-hour care and support service to frail and older persons, sport and recreational activities or counselling services to residents and family members who need it.” Mcmillan further explained that there was a need for the older persons to be

removed from the home as the Social Development Department suspected abuse of older people was possibly taking place at the home. Tamane still maintains that she felt as though her rights were being violated and did not comment further. Nrate-Nhlokomele will remain closed until further notice.

SHARPEVILLE. - Police have released the name of a female that was dumped in a furrow. The half naked body has been identified as that of Margrette Julies (51) from Tshepiso South. The deceased was spotted by a passer-by on the R55 between George Thabe Stadium and Tshepiso South commonly known as Di-Venture area. The body was found on Valentines Day. Police spokesperson Sergeant Getrude Makhale said they received a call from an anonymous person about the body lying in the furrow. Paramedics and police rushed to the scene. The body had wounds to the neck and head. It is unclear what object was used to cut her.

Police denied rumours that the deceased might have been raped before being murdered. Makhale said that, according to the postmortem results, there was no penetration. The body was left wearing only a brown top. The paramedics reported that the incident might have happened less than 24 hours before the body was found. An eyewitness on the scene said the deceased was last seen pushing a trolley collecting scrap metal. They pointed out to the police that they saw some young males pushing the deceased’s trolley towards the blue gum trees behind the stadium. Police appeal to members of the public who might have seen the incident to report or call the Boipatong Police Station.

VEREENIGING. - Yet another housing march took place in Vereeniging last week. The residents of ward 39, including Eatonside and Zone 7, mostly elderly people, said they are tired of their houses being sold without without any form of paper-work. The residents demanded that vacant stands be allocated to the needy. “We need protection against the Red Ants troubling us through evictions.” Th residents, joined by some youths, turned to the Gauteng Housing Department to demand title deeds on Friday. They were turned away when they were supposed to hand the memorandum to the office of the Sedibeng District Municipal MMC for Human Settlements Madisebo Kgomoeasera. The march follows that one that took place recently by other members of the community mostly from Evaton and Small Farms over the same issue of title deeds. Kgomoeasera promised and assured the residents that the memo would receive proper attention. She said the district office never instituted the Red Ants to evict the community. “We will conduct an investigation into how the Red Ants became involved because the local municipality assists with the issue of housing,” she said. The residents demanded a response within seven working days. Crime does not pay! Millions of innocent South Africans pay for the crimes that are committed against them. Criminals and crime these days do not choose, they take anything if not everything. I empathise with the victims of any crime. The people who commit crime, for whatever reason, need to be ashamed of themselves. They need to be put where they belong and have the key thrown into the sea. Police also need to step up their game as millions of South Africans are

Crime doesn’t pay, only innocent victims do! victims of heinous crimes and something must be done about this. Nevertheless, matters of insecurity will not be solved by the police alone. The people who do this are our friends, neighbours and relatives and until the nerve is found by the civilians to stop abetting crime by shielding criminals, the battle for the extinction of crime will remain a pipe dream. To blame the police for failure to protect us is unfair until we help to empower them, at least in terms of giving them information. Keep yourself in the know. Know your neighbourhood. Knowledge is a

very powerful tool when it comes to crime. Education of different individuals can be key to all kinds of crime prevention. Talk to your neighbours. When you know your neighbours, you know the people who belong in your neighbourhood. he First Things First – Get Tested is a campaign that was developed by The Higher Education and Training HIV/AIDS (HEIADS) programme in order to mitigate the spread of TB, HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) at VUT. This social campaign ran from 6-9 February and comprised special marquees placed at each entrance and exit point of the campus where students could go and get tested. In collaboration with the Sedibeng District Municipality Health Services, funded NGOs and Broad Reach Healthcare, the First Things First campaign was able to offer all the clinic testing services. It is the first time that the VUT clinic has collaborated with other healthcare facilities.

The HEIAIDS co-ordinator Ms Epheniah Mohotsi stated that while their main target is first-year students, senior students and staff members were also encouraged to participate. Activities around the campaign for 2017, which is titled “My Health, My Responsibility”, will continue to take place on the following dates at various satellites: 9 February, VUT Science and Technology Park in Sebokeng, 14 February, VUT Secunda Campus and 14-15 February, Ekhurhuleni Campus in Daveyton . Party packs and R50 food vouchers were sponsored by Shoprite for the first 50 students to get tested in one of their marquees.

The VUT team has been playing for University Sports South Africa (USSA), has won the tournament six times and is still defending champion of the Gauteng Softball Association since 2016. It is the first club to have had such a large number of players selected to play abroad. The trip to Canada has been the most exciting moment for this team which has been waiting anxiously for such an opportunity to avail itself. One of the players, Mogau Thupudi said: “I am honored to be among the selected ones; I have been waiting for this oppor-

tunity to come and was happy to grab it with both hands. I can’t wait to compete with other countries and I hope that the scouts will select me to play for their team since the international scouts would be Japan, USA, China and Australia.” For Nkomari Chepape, this is a second chance because he was selected in 2013 to go and play in New Zealand but due to injury, had to be excluded but is now excited to be part of the team going Canada. Mkhabela is the man to lead us ZACHARI A NALE For all these years TOUCHLINE has been accused of criticising the Safa Sedibeng Presidents for maladministration and lack of vision as far as the development of football in this region is concerned. But I don’t regret it because the only thing they are good at is quarrelling, gossiping and back-stabbing. TOUCHLINE attended the Safa Sedibeng Extraordinary Congress over the weekend

and I must say I was impressed by Safa Sedibeng President Solly Mkhabela. Not only was TOUCHLINE impressed by this charming and respectable president but also the three LFAs (Emfuleni Local Football Association, Lesedi Local Football Association and Midvaal Local Football Association) representatives. They were full of compliments for Mkhabela’s leadership qualities. Midvaal Local Football Association in particular didn’t hide their excitement about the man’s transparent direction. The man won the heart of TOUCHLINE when he touched base on the development of football in this region saying he pledges

R25 000 to the three LFAs provided they gave him their programmes. I was sitting there taking notes, but I felt like a part of the proceedings. Great ideas on how to move Sedibeng football forward were discussed. Mkhabela used the opportunity to present his vision and TOUCHLINE now understands why Safa President Danny Jordaan also wished other regions’ presidents could be like Mkhabela. The man doesn’t pretend to know everything and he also acknowledges the fact that he is still learning. If we had people who are as selfless as

ces referred the Phekwa All Stars FC’s matter back to the Safa Sedibeng offices to deal with. Sedibeng Ster Sport can reveal that one of the REC members involved in the issue is Mondli Nkosi who also happens to be ELFA chairman. “I will propose if Safa REC wants to get to the bottom of the problem they must suspend those REC members who is/are implicated in the Pekwa All Stars FC’s saga,” said Mokoena. As if this was not enough, MLFA also suggested that Safa REC open a case of fraud against previous Safa REC members who misused R500 000 received from Lotto. Sedibeng Ster Sport has extensively reported about alleged mismanagement of funds which led this region to be under administration under the leadership of Xolani Mtumtum. Safa Sedibeng President Solly Mkhabela complimented MLFA executive members for the bold step they took to request this extraordinary congress. Mkhabela said as the president of Safa Sedibeng he will make sure that

the above mentioned issues are dealt with. He also promised to open a case against the previous Safa Sedibeng REC members who misused funds. He mentioned in the meeting that one of the previous Safa Sedibeng REC members confessed to them that they received R500 000 from Lotto but only R150 000 is left in his personal account. “Look, we are going to open the case because we have tried our level best to ask former Safa Sedibeng REC members to cooperate but only a few of them were willing to. As we speak now I was told that the money that is left is R150 000 and still in somebody’s personal account. I don’t know what happened with the rest but we will go to the highest authority to ensure they pay the money,” he concluded.

Heads to roll at Safa Sedibeng

Zacharia Nale

VEREENIGING.- If what was discussed at the Safa Sedibeng extraordinary congress is anything to go by, then heads are set to roll. This urgent extraordinary congress which took place at the Vaal Teknorama Museum in Vereeniging over the weekend was requested by the Midvaal Local Football Association (MLFA) to discuss the following burning issues: The Pekwa All Stars FC court order and the missing lottery funds donated to the organisation. The Local Football Associations that were represented in the congress were Lesedi Local Football Association (LLFA), Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELFA) and Midvaal Local Football Association (MLFA). MLFA, under the leadership of the chairman Mosuoa Mokoena, demanded that Safa Sedibeng Regional Executive Committe (REC) members who are implicated in the Pekwas All Stars FC issue be suspended or step down. This followed after Safa national offi-

Mkhabela in football, TOUCHLINE doesn’t think this region would have been under administration in the first place. For example, some of the LFA members thought that Mkhabela would be against their suggestions to suspend some of his Safa Sedibeng REC members implicated in the Phekwa All Stars Court order. He however surprised them when he said he will take action against those who put the region into disrepute. He was not defensive like Midvaal Local Football Association Chairman Mosuoa Mokoena. Mkhabela proved them wrong.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Dr Nhlapo Primary School from Boipatong hosted a successful Cycle Three Athletics Meeting at Carel De Wet High School in Vanderbijlpark last Wednesday. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Principal Ryan Ntintili said the main purpose of the event was to unearth the physical and athletic potential of the learners. The schools that participated in this initiative include Oospark Primary, Pinedine Primary, Mqiniswa Primary, Hendrick Van Der Bijl Primary, Vaal River Primary and Dr Nhlapo Primary as the host of the event. The learners participated

in the 100m, high jump and short put to mention but a few. Ntintili said he was overwhelmed by the positive response of the participating schools’ principals, teachers and parents. He also thanked the School Governing Body’s (SGBs) for making sure the event was a success. “I want to take this opportunity to thank all the schools that took part in the event and Carel De Wet School for these top class facilities. We intend to make this an annual event because it is clear that the children had fun during the event. We at Dr Nhlapo Primary School encourage our learners to participate in sport activities,” said Ntintili.
