SEDIBENG. - A rape suspect was arrested in possession of a stolen 9 mm firearm. Police reported that a stolen pistol and ammunition with ten rounds were discovered in De Deur on December 1 at around 01:30. Vaal Rand Flying Squad spokesperson Constable Puleng Nkitseng said the incident happened at Orange Farms. The Flying Squad, Constable Molaudzi and Sergeant Moeketsi Ralekholela were approached by one of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) patrollers who alerted them to the incident. The victim pointed the suspect out to police and they acted quickly and arrested the suspect. He allegedly admitted that he pointed a firearm at a female victim before abducting and raping her. The suspect, age 34, briefly appeared at the Vereeniging Magistrates Court. The matter was postponed for further investigation.

SEBOKENG. - Eight leaders of the Diamonds will probably spend Christmas and New Years Eve behind bars as they are charged with kidnapping. This was after five families received telephonic death threats against their children at the initiation school. The families said the callers remain unknown. They told them, “Your children are in safe hands. There’s a demand of R5 000 ransom in cash per child.” The children have apparently been circumcised. Other families were shell-shocked after receiving telephone calls. A meeting between the police and the parents to exchange the money was organised. The deal was to meet at the Thabong Shopping Complex on 10 December. It was around 14:30 when five members of the Diamonds arrived to collect the cash. The suspects met the families. Moments later while exchanging cash, the police appeared from their smokescreen. The suspects were ‘stung’ and arrested by undercover police. The driver of the bakkie managed to escape and drove off. The police could not rule out the possibility that more kidnappers still needed to be arrested. Police spokesperson Captain Teboho Lephoto said the suspects are from Bophelong and Sebokeng. It is not clear whether the suspects are from the Mopheme or Diamonds groups. Fifteen boys aged 18 were rescued at Kleigrond. The area is situated near Waterdale opposite Boiketlong informal settlement. They were taken to hospital for medical examination and released on Tuesday. Police are looking into how the boys were kidnapped. The parents of the victims are relieved.

Over 80 girls rescued from initiation schools

Moleboheng Chaha

SEDIBENG. - Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety Zaza Raikane has enforced the banning of all initiation schools in the Vaal due to gang violence that took place recently which is believed to be related to initiation. Raikane has since kept to the agreement that there will be no initiation schools in the area this year. The ban was initially recommended by the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities. Other practitioners though, still maintained that they would carry out initiation this season

despite the ban. They went ahead and set up their initiation camps. Some initiation practitioners, cops and municipality officials raided female initiation camps. A total of 84 female initiates were rescued in a successful operation led by Raikane and her team. Raikane said she did not initiate the ban but was merely using bylaws to carry out the recommendations of the CRL Commission. “Gangsters cannot take control of initiations. We will not stand by and let this happen.” After they were rescued from initiation schools, the female initiates were taken to a place where they could be collected by their parents. Those who were not collected were taken to a place of safety.

Over eighty girls were rescued from initiation schools during a recent operation in the area.

Residents concerned over planned township Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - A planned township development will form an extension of Three Rivers East. The plan however has residents up in arms. The new extension, which will be known as Uitvlugt, will be developed along the R54 (Vaaldam Road). The first phase will produce 2 000 homes, and the

other phases will follow. The housing extension is believed to be developed for those who fall in the middle and higher income groups. Market research of the area shows a shortage of about 10 341 units for living and it is rising annually by about 2070. Emphasis has also been laid on the fact that the extension does not provide for RDP houses. The Midvaal Local Municipality has al-

ready approved the plans. Although they have little involvement in terms of its development, they support it. According to Dalene Venter, DA councillor for Three Rivers, the plans were approved in 2007, but the new plans submitted differ from the initial plans. “It would initially have been a development called Eligwa Estates, but it is now completely different. According to the plans,

provision must be made for four schools, six minibus stands, five churches and a retirement home. “We are not against the development, just the way in which it is pursued.” The community is concerned about the increase in traffic, pollution, the impact the development will have on the existing infrastructure and the possible increase of crime in the area.

CREW CONFERENCE DRAWS INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION

FIRST PRIZE AWARD FOR VAAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY CHEMISTRY STUDENT

T

he Vaal University of Technology and the Chemistry Department are proud to announce that one of their students scooped a first prize award at the 6th Annual Nano Sciences Young Researchers Symposium (NYRS) 2016 held at the MinTek Conference Centre on 18 November. The 23-year-old Semakaleng Kganyago, who comes from Pretoria, is a full-time Master’s student in Chemistry. Raised by a single parent, she was encouraged to never stop believing in herself. With this attitude, she completed her BTech last year and graduated this year, Cum laude. During the course of the semester, as chemistry students, they were asked to bring forward their abstracts. Her abstract was titled: “Manipulating the size and shape of cobalt oxide nanoparticles”. The competition was held amongst different universities including Wits, University of Johannesburg, UNISA and others. “All the glory goes to God. I would like to thank my family, supervisor, Dr Elvera Viljoen and co-supervisor

Dr Augustine Ofomaja, both senior lectures in Chemistry, for assisting me to be where I am today. Prof Makwena Moloto for the grilling of every Friday’s presentation and also to the NCAP group for always being there,” she said. Her strong interest in the field of chemistry is on its social and environmental impact and she therefore decided to pursue this interest through her thesis research: “The effect of size and shape of cobalt oxide nanoparticles during the oxidation of Methylene blue.” Methylene blue is a heterocyclic compound which is aromic in nature. It appears as an odourless dark green powder which gives a blue color when dissolved in water at room temperature, although this dye is not regarded as a very toxic dye it can have various effects on human beings and animals, once inhaled it can cause heart rate increasing nausea and vomiting. “She is a real sunshine and is hard-working. We are proud of her and very thankful that she was also able to assist the BTechs and inspire them,” said Dr Viljoen.

he Centre for Renewable Energy and Water (CREW) held its bi-annual conference at the VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park on 24 and 25 November 2016. The title of the conference was International Conference on Environment, Materials and Green Technology, which attracted international delegates with keynote speakers from Italy, Kenya and Southern Africa. The theme of the conference was: “Global Environmental Challenges and Emerging Materials and Technologies”. CREW, at the Vaal University of Technology, is a multi-faculty centre of excellence which centres on the management of water and wastewater and the generation of renewable energy, with a special focus on applied research. The conference thus aimed to develop collaboration and promote a research culture among academics in different disciplines, both internally and externally. The conference also served as a platform to find ways to improve the quality of water for both human and animal consumption. Delegates responded very positively and the conference was well attended by 120 academics, students and people with common interests. Academics from various universities presented papers which gave way to debates after each one. Pertinent topics included the increase in contamination of water that is escalating to cancer in humans, integrated systems for water management and energy generation It was also noted that some correlations between a few of the presentations existed and this prompted participation for further dialogue. CREW Director and leading global authority in the field, Prof Ochieng Aoyi, said in his welcome to guests: “The principles embedded in CREW are encoded on four pillars, these being Chemistry, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering and Computer Sciences. The CREW team works collectively to set a research agenda that is

sustainable and will play a role on the whole continent. They also believe that success comes when collaborative efforts are exercised. We enjoy the fruits of success individually as we create legacy that bears fruits for generations to come. “The current global trend is that human activities are continuously depleting natural resources at a rate that, if left uncontrolled, could lead to irreversible environmental catastrophe. Various forms of human activities are, directly or indirectly, related in such a way that the performance of one entity is enhanced or negatively affected by another. Similarly, the impact of our research outputs can be greatly enhanced if the inter-relationship that exists among our activities is harnessed to maximise mutual benefit.” Prof Michael Pillay: Programme Director appealed to delegates: “Research conducted has shown that 80 percent of the current human race departs from the world without a single original thought. The question is: ‘Where do you belong’? Let’s share ideas and let there be a trend of original thoughts.” Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Irene Moutlana shared facts on water under the topic: “The War Waged against the Source of Life; Water”. “War knows no victory and, with the water shortages and all elements of nature conspiring against human nature, researchers are needed to think of a tangible output to stop the onslaught. The importance of water should be infused in curriculums for everyone to understand the importance of managing it… water and environmental pollution know no boundary,” she said. Parallel presentation sessions were held giving researcher’s opportunities to share and present their research findings. Poster presentations were reviewed and the best three were awarded for the scientific merit and clarity.

Bophelong’s hope restored Lerato Serero

BOPHELONG. - The Bophelong Hope Restoration Community Organisation recently held its graduation ceremony at the Ikokobetseng Primary School. This follows a long session of community development and educational programmes. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Tshepo Sechele said that they identified children from Ikokobetseng Primary School who had difficulties with reading

and writing and presented them with reading sessions, spelling bees and presentation courses.“ We are all about community development and we felt obliged to offer the children these courses for them to improve,” Sechele said. At the graduation ceremony the children were offered certificates and a yearbook with material that will help them in the long run. Children from Ikokobetsong Primary School with their certificates.

TSHEPISO. - Two young men are finally living their dream which is to own their own farm. Phehello Radebe and Malefane Lehobo are now laying a foundation for food security in Tshepiso Ward 22 to help enhance South Africa’s economic growth. They say: “Growth will never be an overnight success and also needs good and willing hearts. The pair created Kgorang Agriculture (NPO), which serves to advance the agenda of communal development and sustainability in the agricultural and environmental sector to contribute towards job creation, youth and the empowerment of women. Lehobo says their indigenous fruit plantations such as peaches, apricots, grapes, oranges etc, are gradually depleting and needs resuscitation; “The cost of crops and vegetables in particular has increased exponentially and the majority of people are jobless. Through our door-to-door research, we found that most people have an interest in agriculture but lack enthusiasm.” The community of Tshepiso is encouraged and prepared to commit support for the project and will participate when given support and roles to play.

Success comes to those who are looking for it SEDIBENG.- Success usually comes to those who are looking for it! Tshegofentse Facilities and Engineering situated in Vanderbijlpark was deemed to be amongst the lucky few. The Chemical Industries Education & Training Authority (CHIETA) has been assisting students and placing them in the company since 2014 and the company has been equipping and skilling students from different institutes who actually need work-related training for them to complete their qualifications, like a national diploma and degree. “I was supposed to job hunt for in-service training after completing my N6 with the college to get my complete diploma; but ever since I have joined this programme I feel like I am reaching my full potential because, fortunately enough there was Tshegofentse Facilities and Engineering. They offered me 18 months of in-service training with financial assistance from CHIETA. I would therefore like to send my gratitude to CHIETA. I highly appreciate their effort; they are one of the best service SETAs in South Africa,” said an intern student, Moleboheng Mofokeng. We give opportunities to those who seek exposure in the workplace and those who wish to further their studies in the Engineering sector. Together, let’s grow our country for a better future where vibrant youngsters are given opportunities of a lifetime. I would like to send my heartfelt appreciation to CHIETA for what they have done for our company and for what it is doing for young people from universities and colleges.

War of words between ELFA and Safa Sedibeng officials Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - There is an ugly war of words going on between the Emfuleni Local Football Association and Safa Sedibeng over the regional play-offs. This followed after Safa Sedibeng ordered that the Regional Play-Offs match between Vaal Stars FC and Fast Eleven FC be replayed. The Rathanda, Heidelberg based side, Fast Eleven FC beat Vaal Stars FC 3-1 and gained promotion to the Safa Sedibeng SAB League. The problem started when it was announced that Vaal Stars FC, was not promoted to the Safa Sedibeng SAB League after the Regional Play-Offs took place at Shakespeare Stadium two weeks ago. It was reported that Stars FC and Sebokeng Ajax FC will campaign in the SAB League but later Safa Sedibeng wrote a letter to the ELFA executive members to inform them that the game between Vaal Stars FC and Fast Eleven FC must be played at a neutral venue. However, this decision didn’t sit well with the ELFA executive members and there was an exchange of ugly words between the organisation’s officials. A statement sent by the ELFA general secretary Martin Mpholo reads as follows: “ELFA’s celebration for having two teams promoted to SAB League

Touchl i ne

TOUCHLINE wants to take this opportunity to wish all the Sedibeng Ster Sport readers a wonderful festive season, especially those sports administrators and coaches who take care of our children. These are

was cut short over the last couple of days. Somebody, somewhere, decided to change these rules and order a “replay.” “When a complaint is laid there must be a letter to that effect, plus an xamount of money paid and the regional competitions convener must be informed. “The complaint must be investigated by DC like Mmabatho FC and ELFA. The host of this play-off is ELFA but the replay was diverted to another venue. I smell a rat. We were told recently as ELFA to stick to the written rules and regulations by the gurus of the constitution. This is only the tip of the iceberg as we are expecting more tornados to hit ELFA. We shall however overcome this someday. As we did last time, let us all pray for Vaal Stars to pass through this storm unharmed. Those who can travel to the venue are welcome to do so.” Meanwhile, Safa Sedibeng Regional Executive Officer Beauty Molise said it was just a misunderstanding of the rules that resulted in this confusion. As things stand, Fast Evelen FC from Rathanda and Sebokeng Ajax FC will campaign in the Safa Sedibeng SAB League for the 2-16/2017 soccer season.

Time to say goodbye..! the people who deserve to be acknowledged for the role they play in our community. Without them our children’s future is doomed in sports. To make matters worse, some of them are not getting paid for developing our young talent but they never give up – they are passionate about what they are doing. As much as TOUCHLINE criticises you – you deserve to be acknowledged for your hard work. With

or without resources you make sure that our children get the best training and development. With those words TOUCHLINE wishes you and your family a wonderful Christmas and prosperous New Year. Let us come back next year, full of enthusiasm to take our sports to the highest level. Dr Irvin Khoza once said; “Together-and-

only together - we will continue to raise the standard of our FOOTBALL.” I believe this remains our greatest challenge - to stay together, to grow together and win together.” Instead of working with one another – we work against each other and this is the downfall of football in this region. It is time to say goodbye. HAPPY FESTIVE SEASON..!

EVATON. - It is that time of the year once again when Sedibeng soccer fans will flock to the dusty Pooe Soccer Grounds to watch township football, otherwise, known as”Kasi World Cup Games” when the Annual Pooe Festival Tournament will kick start. The main focus will be on the senior teams with the winner smiling all the way to the bank with a cheque of R120 000, while the runner-up will pocket R60 000 and third place will get R30 000. The senior soccer teams’ programme is set to kick off in December.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Bhekani Mathebula who is the tournament coordinator said they expect fireworks from this year’s tournament. “This is our Kasi World Cup where the whole of Gauteng’s soccer fans will spend their festive season watching township football. This tournament is one of the biggest in Gauteng and like previous years we are looking forward to this exciting season. “ The soccer fans enjoy this tournament because the type of football these teams play entertains,” said Mathebula.
