SEBOKENG.- Democratic Alliance (DA) Proportional Representative (PR) Councillor Hlalele Mosuoane foresees danger. During the rainy festive season, children played in and around an unsecured sewerage stream in Zone 20. The stream is about 700 metres long. According to residents, the stream is a danger to children who play in and around it. As it is so ill-guarded it can only cause catastrophe if local government does nothing about it. Residents claim to have loudly and repeatedly raised concern about this situation, but nothing has been done. Mosuoane told Sedibeng

Ster that the most concerning factor is the children playing there as it is a massive health hazard. “We cannot stop children from being children. They do as they please - that’s why they play in such conditions. It’s the municipality’s responsibility to seal the stream so children cannot play in the dirty water,” said Mosuoane. “I have been living in these conditions for more than 15 years. We have made noise about it and nothing has been done,” said a resident. Ward Councillor Griffiths Mzizi was not available for comment at the time of going to print.

In the other case, Zinde is accused of murdering his mother, Hope Zinde, in June 2016 in Brits. His mother was a former TV anchor and board member of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). His R10 000 bail was revoked and he was remanded into custody. He will stand trial in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on February 22. His lawyer Francois Joubert requested that Mark be referred to the Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for further assessment.

VEREENIGING. - A case of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm was recently postponed. The accused is 23-year-old Mark Zinde. The suspect briefly appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court on January 26 charged with assault on his father, Dr Lebohang Mohale Manoto. The court heard that while the suspect was out on bail of R10 000 for allegedly murdering his mother, he apparently attacked his father with a glass in Walkerville near De Deur in November last year. The suspect has been undergoing psychiatric evaluation and treatment. The magistrate agreed to postpone the mat-

They are soon to be extinct! someone dying under the age of 40 was extremely rare. Has anyone noticed that more and more young people are dying of unknown or peculiar causes, particularly celebrities? Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me? Mandoza, Sfiso and Lundi were all 38 when they met their maker. It is said that TB, HIV, and other viral diseases accounts for over a quarter of all the deaths among the youth. After extensive research I came upon a report naming the top six leading causes of youths’ deaths. They

Is it just me, or do more people die young today than they did in previous eras? In just the last four months I have heard of 4 people under 40 who have died either of cancer and/or heart failures. When I go back 10-12 years the number is still staggering. Yet, 15 years ago, at least in my world, hearing of

were the same for both sexes in this country, with the contribution of all leading causes of death to overall death numbers for each sex, higher for women compared to men. The leading cause of death for the black youth was the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) disease (and associated sicknesses) and tuberculosis, while heart diseases and cancer were the leading causes for the white population. Tuberculosis was the leading cause of death among the youth in seven provinces except for Wes-

tern Cape and Northern Cape. The report concluded that there was still a need to accept, educate and intensify efforts to prevent diseases among youth in South Africa. I am not insinuating anything here, but it surely is a shame that statistics and daily occurrences such as unnessecary deaths are being ignored. Unless young people take care, it seems they are going to be extinct sooner than we can wink. Trust me! Lerato wa ha Serero…

of neighbouring communities and plans on how it will help those affected negatively by its pollution, including plans for compensation. “We further demand that Sasol provide detailed information on preferential procurement targets and performance, especially relating to the historically disadvantaged communities.” The SACP also called for the re-nationalisation of Sasol back into a state owned enterprise. In response, Zwane stated that the SACP has never officially engaged Sasol about their grievances and demands before their march on Friday. “If they engaged with Sasol, we could have corrected the misconceptions on some of the points in the memorandum. “To mention a few, Sasol disinvesting in the country is a misinterpretation of what is correct. Our home is and always will be in South Africa. “We reaffirmed that by building our new, bigger global headquarters in Johannesburg. We are an international company, but most of our capital investments are still made in

SASOLBURG. – The South African Communist Party (SACP), joined by various local community-based and sectoral organisations held a march on Friday in Sasolburg to present a memorandum of demands to Sasol in front of the Sasol 1 main gate. The SACP handed over their memorandum, a three page document, to Vusi Zwane Sasol Public and Regulatory Affairs VP, who accepted it on behalf of Sasol. In their memorandum the SACP and their stakeholders demand that Sasol provide sustainable decent job opportunities to the local residents, especially the youth. “We demand Sasol’s immediate plans for job creation; Sasol must immediately discontinue the use of labour brokers, in whatever form they are, and the conversion of employees working for Sasol under labour brokers into the staff complement of Sasol. “Sasol must immediately reduce their level of pollution and must provide detailed plans on how they will reduce environmental pollution to meet environmental laws. Sasol must initiate a study into the state of health

South Africa, especially in Sasolburg and Secunda and their communities. When it comes to pollution, Sasol follows the letter of the law and our emission levels are acceptable under what is expected as is set out by the regulators. “One of our biggest social investments is to that of healthcare in the broader Metsimaholo community. “I also want to stress that when we have opportunities for employment, priority is given to local people.” For example, last year Sasol had their biggest shutdown in history and 90% of the people that worked on it were sourced locally. Lastly, all legal steps were followed to privatise Sasol. “We are an international company that is listed on the Johannesburg and New York stock exchange. “The issue of nationalisation is a matter to be discussed and addressed at governmental level not here,” said Zwane. ReNasionalise Sasol, was one of SACP’s demands. Photo: Schalk le Roux

2.4. The arbitration found in favour of Pekwa with the following findings: 2.4.1. the ELFA contravened its own uniform Rules and Regulations; 2.4.2. the ELFA is guilty for breaching its own uniform Rules and Regulations; 2.4.3. the match of the 13th day of September 2015 between Juventus and JK Eleven is declared null and void; 2.4.4. the South African Football Association, National office shall investigate the conduct of the ELFA Executive Committee; and 2.4.5. the Executive Committee members of the ELFA are ordered to pay costs of the Arbitration for the following dates 11 and 25 April 2016 as well as 12 May 2016.

2.5. The effect of the ruling was the confirmation that Pekwa was correct in its argument that it was the legitimate winner of the league. 2.6. Since the ruling in June 2016 numerous meetings were convened by both the ELFA and the Sedibeng SAFA Region discussing the options available in ensuring that the ruling was implemented in full. It must be noted that the ruling has to date not been implemented in full with little or no will on the part of the ELFA to implement the ruling in good faith. 2.7. Since the failure on the part of the ELFA to implement the ruling the Sedibeng SAFA Region has since been in the forefront of attempting to resolve the matter. Notwithstanding its attempts the matter remains unresolved. 2.8. The last meeting held by Pekwa and Sedibeng resulted in the payment of the balance of price monies owed to Pekwa as well as the handing over of the trophy. The conclusion of the meeting was that the Sedibeng Region was going to make arrangements for the inclusion of Pekwa in the Regional play offs. To date Pekwa is still waiting for official communication in this regard. We are, however, aware that the said play offs have already been played to the exclusion of Pekwa. 2.9. Pekwa is committed, as a disciplined member of the ELFA, to follow all internal processes to resolve the matter. It however, does not seem as though the same level of commitment exists on the part of the ELFA and the Sedibeng SAFA Region.

TO ADVERTISE CONTACT ANTOINETTE

2.10. That said, Pekwa is left with no option but to demand that the playoffs be reconvened as per the understanding of Pekwa at the last meeting with the Sedibeng SAFA Region within 14 days of this communication failing which Pekwa will approach the court to interdict the ELFA and SAB leagues from further proceeding in the current season pending the implementation of the arbitration award in full. 2.11. For the record, the implementation of the arbitration award includes the payment of the arbitration costs. If the costs are not paid we will have no option but to pursue our client’s remedies in court, which will result in further costs. 2.12. We confirm further that we are pursuing the SAFA National office on the investigation to be conducted against the ELFA Executive Committee that was responsible for the mess the ELFA finds itself in. 2.13. We hope the above is in order. Yours Faithfully

Sport at its best

Same story all the time ZACHARI A NALE TOUCHLINE feels we are repeating the same thing every week because of the same event taking place week-in-and-week-out in football. It is the same old bull stories, season-after-season! This week Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELFA) threatened to take disciplinary action against those teams that don’t honour their Vaal Milling Super League fixtures. At one stage TOUCHLINE

raised this during a meeting – I wanted to know about the criteria used for accepting teams into the association, seeing that some teams never even get to play until the end of the season. This happens every season with our league having many teams at the beginning of the season, but come the end of the season – only the fittest remain. Of course, it is because our league accepts everyone without verifying their credentials.

It is not about how many teams the league has but the quality of our football. As TOUCHLINE said last week – how on earth does a SAB League team lose 10-2? This says a lot about the quality of our football. For the past ten years Midvaal and Lesedi Local Football Associations have had neither a junior nor a Super League but come selections of Safa Sedibeng regional squads or Super League Promotion Play-Offs, those associations suddenly have representatives.

This is cheating at its best. TOUCHLINE pleads with the Emfuleni Local Football Association to call an urgent meeting to address the problem of teams that don’t honour their fixtures before it is too late. There are other issues that also need to be addressed, such as those teams sharing players with SAB League teams. There must be order in football or else we are headed for the graveyard sooner rather than later.

Young athletes battle it out at Carel De Wet Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - As is tradition secondary school learners battled it out in the annual school athletics hosted by HTS Carel De Wet in Vanderbijlpark over the weekend. Sedibeng Ster Sport witnessed incredible talent with both boys and girls giving five-star performances in representing their respective schools. The host school, Carel De Wet, dominated almost each and every category finishing either first or second. Parents came in droves to support their children on the day. The athletes’ appreciation for the support shown by friends, family, teachers and fellow students was rewarded with an excellent display of talent and endurance. The day programme started in the morning with learners registering to participate in several items on the day. The atmosphere was electric and the athletes who excelled in respective items are looking forward to competing at a higher level of sports. Muscles were the order of the day during the HTS Carel De Wet athletics held at school sports facilities over the weekend.
