VEREENIGING. - Spectators were in for a treat when the South African representitive Sprint Racing Team tested their skills against team USA. The first round was held at the Ultimate Raceway in town on Saturday, January 21. Eager spectators arrived early and waited patiently for the newly tarred track to settle before racing could start. It was an extremely hot summer afternoon, but later in the afternoon Mother Nature surprised the 2 500 spectators with strong winds, followed by a cloudburst. But not even the rain could dampen the spirits and most of the spectators took it in their stride. Racing continued but the Sprints division had to wait until Sunday afternoon to settle the score. The fastest qualifiers for final positions were Brian Lay for team USA and Adries Marx for team SA. But is was victory for Lay, followed by crowd favourite Jacques Roos and Marx in third place. This resulted in SA taking the lead with 253 points and USA 184 points. * The next local race (Round 3) between the two teams is on February 4.
