BUILDING BLOCKS. FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE. a project by Fiia Liiti

“Solidarity and Stability, Building Blocks for a Brighter European Future”

was the theme of Salo 2017 – Regional Session of EYP Finland. Five committees were randomly picked to build something that related to their committees’ topics out of building blocks. This project concretised their work in a more creative sense.

EMPL

Automatisation of jobs was closely related to EMPL’s topic regarding Universal Basic Income. The delegates built a robot to demonstrate this and named the creation Stanley-Bob.

ECON

ECON’s topic dealt with the ongoing debt crisis. The stacks of building blocks represented countries with debt. The highest stack was Greece, with the highest amount of debt. The lowest and most far away from others was Switzerland, since it is not part of the EU nor the Eurozone as well as has a relatively little amount of debt. ECON believed that the higher the debt is, the more easily the country will collapse just as the frail towers, and will take down its neighbouring countries too, if they are struggling with economic crises.

DROI

Inspired by their committee’s topic regarding the rights of sexual minorities, DROI built a rainbow and a tall ‘tower of discrimination’ that has been posing a threat to those belonging in the LGBTQ+ community.

LIBE I

LIBE I spent their weekend debating about Member States suspending the Schengen Agreement and reinstating border controls. In their creation, LIBE I depicted a wall between two countries with police in blue on the other side, turning away those trying to cross the border.

AFCO

With the topic dealing with Brexit, AFCO built a bridge out of the building blocks. “It should be Bridge-it instead of Brexit. Even though the UK is leaving the EU, it should be about keeping the bridges and building new, different ones to the Union, instead of burning them”, AFCO stated.
