Welcome to our first issue, where we focus on what’s going on in the lives of the people in our current situation with the pandemic. Throughout this issue, we will highlight what people have been doing during the quarantine, the trends that have surfaced, the scoops we’ve gathered from celebrities, and the stories of recent online sellers.

We hope to entertain you in our endeavor to help cure the boredom that we’ve all been feeling throughout the year, and give you the entertainment that you deserve. With that, we hope you enjoy this magazine.

f you’ve scrolled through Instagram, TikTok or Facebook during quarantine of 2020, there’s a good chance you’ve seen a video of someone whipping together sugar, instant coffee and boiling water. This concoction is spooned over iced milk to create the foamy drink known as Dalgona coffee.

Social media users like Bretman Rock, Lizzo, Erwan Heussaf, and many more from all over the world took the dalgona challenge and created their versions of the drink.

rom ube cheese pandesal to Dalgona coffee, the COVID-19 pandemic has spawned several food trends in the country.

Among these is baked sushi— deconstructed sushi rolls baked in a casserole which, most likely, you wouldn’t find anywhere in Japan, but has become ubiquitous in the Philippines.

e couldn’t talk about Quarantine Trends of 2020 without talking about TikTok, one of the fastest growing online platforms to date. With stars such as Charli D’Amelio, Zach King, Addison Rae, and many others, this app has entertained a lot of us during the quarantine. Even local content creators like Tyrone Tiaga has made us laugh every now and then.

Whether you admit it or not, TikTok has put a lot of songs, dances, and skits in the mainstream.

Who could forget about Renegade, WAP, Savage Love, and Say So? Just like Vine before it, TikTok will inevitably define a generation as it generates loads of trending content.

Viva sues Nadine Lustre over alleged violation of contract

V

iva Artists Agency (VAA) on Friday filed a lawsuit against actress Nadine Lustre, whom it said remained its exclusive artist until 2029, over her alleged “continuous violation” of her contract.

VAA alleged that Lustre violated her “valid and existing agency and management agreement ... by contracting independently with advertisers, promoters, and other third parties, in utter disregard of the exclusivity of her contract.”

Lustre entered a 5-year, exclusive contract with VAA in 2009, the group said. That contract was renewed in 2014 for another 10 years, or until June 30, 2024. The same contract was then renewed for another 5 years in 2015, moving its end date to June 29, 2029, according to VAA.

LUSTRE’S CAMP: VIVA CONTRACT ‘OPRESSIVE’ VAA’s filing of its lawsuit against Lustre came nearly a year after it first warned of legal action against the actress in January, when she announced having “terminated” her contract with the agency and that she was now “self-managed.”

At the time, Lustre’s camp said it welcomed “any legal action by Viva so their unconscionable, oppressive and illegal contract with Nadine (and their other artists) can be litigated in the proper forum.”

Since her proclaimed departure from VAA in January 2020, Lustre has released a full album under Reid’s record label, and has clinched numerous endorsement deals with ads on social media and television. — with a report from MJ Felipe, ABS-CBN News

GRAMMY Taylor Alison Swift is an award winning American singer-songwriter. Her most recent award is her Grammy Award for Album of the Year for her album “Folklore”. ONLINE SELLER STORIES We interviewed 3 online sellers to share their experiences in the industry, and here’s what they have to say.

Tell us the basic description of your shop and what items do you sell.

D’Zelva sell imported stuff like vitamins, boxes of sausages, peanut butters, and Thai makeup.

How long have you been selling online?

We started online selling around June 2020. We started selling as soon as we got our permit from DTI. What online platform do you use in selling your items?

Facebook and Instagram.

What was the reason why you decided to open your shop?

We wanted to have extra income since the pandemic happened.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected you and your shop? What were the things that you had to adjust during the ongoing lockdown?

Right now, we’re not focused on our online business anymore. It’s like a side job right now because we have our main jobs. But the main thing we adjusted to is the mode of delivery and the delivery date. We expected a slower process of delivery to our customers due to the lockdown/quarantine protocols.

How do you usually handle rude buyers?

How do you de-stress?

It takes A LOT of patience to deal with them. We’d have to explain to then over and over again about their question/s about our product/s. We usually just proceed with the other customers and our main jobs, we forget about those very rude customers.

What do you want to tell all the people who are planning to start their own business/ those people who are just getting started?

Never lose hope! But here’s one thing to remember, online selling should not be your main source of incoming especially when you’re new. If you can and want to work outside, do it. Your sales will not be stable so I/we would recommend that online selling should be a side job for you only but if it’s really your only possible source of income during this pandemic, then NEVER GIVE UP!!

Don’t be shy promoting your business and when you earn from your business, don’t spend it all on your personal wants (not needs, take some of it if needed). I suggest you to invest more on your business so it will grow into a bigger one.

What did you expect when you first started out your business? Were you able to meet your expectations? Why or why not?

We expected that it would be hard promoting our new business. We didn’t expect a lot of people to buy from us so we ordered a few stocks from our cousin in the States.

Tell us the basic description of your shop and what items do you sell.

Hiraya is an online shop doing GOs (group orders) of different merchandise from Thailand.

We focus mainly on selling items endorsed by celebrities, especially by Mew Suppasit and Gulf Kanawut.

How long have you been selling online?

We’ve been selling for 2 months now.

What online platform do you use in selling your items?

We use Twitter as our main platform but we’re planning to expand.

What was the reason why you decided to open your shop?

Before we became sellers, we are certified buyers. When we realized the advantage of having a Thailand address, we decided to open a shop for us to have a little profit.

During the first few months of your business, what were the problems that you encountered?

Well, time is really an issue. It’s difficult to handle a shop while working and studying.

Sometimes it was quite overwhelming, but I’ve adjusted quite well.

What did you expect when you first started out your business? Were you able to meet your expectations? Why or why not?

Entering a market that is highly competitive, our expectations were low. We didn’t think that people will buy from us since there are shops which already established their credibility from buyers. However, we try to really lower the price since we knew that most buyers are

students or working students. Hence, they bought from us. It was actually overwhelming when we received many orders during our first month alone.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected you and your shop? What were the things that you had to adjust during the ongoing lockdown?

Almost all of our transactions are made online. We order and pay via online. Our buyers pay via online. Although sometimes, there are buyers who pay through kiosks and banks. That can cause delay because of the quarantine rules. Packing will be kinda challenging also since our local address is in Caloocan. Other owners of the shop are from Bulacan and Rizal. Travel restrictions and health protocols will definitely make us adjust.

How do you usually handle rude buyers? How do you de-stress?

I haven’t encountered really rude buyers so far. What I have encountered is a buyer that’s bossy. What I do is leave the message on read for a while. When I’m sure that my emotions will not get the best of me, that’s when I reply.

What do you want to tell all the people who are planning to start their own business/those people who are just getting started?

Just do it. Of course there are advantages and disadvantages, but if you don’t do it, you’ll have ‘what ifs’. If you commit a mistake, charge it to experience and learn from it. If you’ve done something well, charge it to experience and keep going. Those who start a business are usually risk-takers. If you think you can do it, just do it.

My shop (JDJ sweets) sells affordable yet delicious baked goods such as crinkles, cookies, etc..

How long have you been selling online?

1 month, going 2 months this April 15.

What online platform do you use in selling your items?

Instagram and Facebook.

What was the reason why you decided to open your shop?

As a 16 year old, I think it’s time for me to earn my own money to cover my future expenses and of course to help my parents on paying the bills etc..

How do you usually handle rude buyers? How do you de-stress?

Luckily, I haven’t encounter any of them pa naman, but blocking them would be a nice way to destress.

During the first few months of your business, what were the problems that you encountered?

When I first launched my products, I wasn’t expecting to get a lot of orders. But the tables

have turned, on my first batch I was able to gather 20 packs of my crinkles and that was around 200 pcs of crinkles.

What did you expect when you first started out your business? Were you able to meet your expectations? Why or why not?

I guess my biggest dilemma would be that I don’t have big capital to buy ingredients and tools to the point na I needed to borrow money from my parents to start my business.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected you and your shop? What were the things that you had to adjust during the ongoing lockdown?

It affected me in a way na I can’t enter the malls and supply stores to buy my ingredients and stuffs for packaging. I also adjusted the deliver dates from everyday to once or twice a week only due to this ongoing lockdown and curfew hours.

What do you want to tell all the people who are planning to start their own business/those people who are just getting started?

Do it now! And always listen to your consumers, make your products affordable yet good quality/tasting. Also don’t be shy to promote your own products online!

Well that’s about it! All in all, it seems that the trend of online selling continues on during the pandemic, especially with some lacking access to go to malls.
