The Monday night Community Bowls season run by the Cromwell Bowling Club ended on a high note earlier this month when all the teams took the Christmas theme to heart. The competition on the night was won by Dave Grieve (below right) - looking just a little like Santa - and his band of merry helpers from left . Sue Bingham, Wayne Hurley, and Shane Wild. Another competing team with a rather angelic look to their uniform was from left Annie Affleck, Lee Round and Dot Munro.

NEXT SUMMER OUR LAKEFRONT WILL BE ACCESSED DIFFERENTLY - Part One Editorial supplied

The Central Otago Queenstown Trail Network Trust (COQTNT) is building a cycling / walking network that will link the Otago Central Rail Trail through Cromwell Gorge to Cromwell and then onto Gibbston Valley via the Kawarau Gorge and eventually up the Clutha to join up with Wanaka. In total there will be 500km+ of cycle trails and walking tracks for us all to enjoy throughout this network. The first sub- project the COQTNT plan to implement in creating a walking / cycleway from Cromwell to Clyde is to upgrade the existing tracks around the Cromwell Community. They want to create a world class safe cycling / walking track next to our lake. This will connect our communities of Pisa Moorings, Lowburn and Bannockburn easily to Cromwell via the lakefront. The trail is to be built to the New Zealand Cycle Trail (NZCT) Grade 1 standard,

which means it is an easy gradient with a smooth consistent gravel surface. It will generally be 2.5 metres wide to allow safe multi directional passing for riders and walkers and will be suitable for all levels of riders and e-bikes (not motorbikes). In order to keep motorised vehicles off the track and keep it safe for walkers and riders as well as preserving the surface of the track, restrictions will be put in place. There will be fences to keep vehicles out of some lakefront areas. There will continue to be easy walking access to the lake, and vehicle access points have been provided for in appropriate places. This may change the way users have interacted with the lake in the past but it is essential to providing safe trails with a great surface for the benefit of all users. . COQTNT has tried to balance the needs of different users of the land that the trail crosses and appreciate that there are

Wild Earth is Coming Into Town…early in 2019! Early in 2019 Wild Earth Restaurant is planning to open under the new name of “The Stoaker Room” at Freeway Orchard. A lengthy resource consent process is still underway for the exciting development of an al fresco bistro style restaurant with a wine and craft beer bar. The Bistro fare will truly focus on The Stoaker Barrels and the wonderful array of delicious food created in these unique cookers. The team considered many options before settling on Freeway Orchard as the best site for this development. The Freeway enclave fronts onto State Highway 8B and already has other successful wine, cider, juice and fruit businesses operating, so a food offering will compliment that nicely.

The last part of 2018 has been a hectic time for Quintin Quider and his team, after finding out mid-year that renewing the lease at the Goldfields mining site would not be a viable option a search was quickly mounted for a suitable new location. Of course, the team are itching to be up and running again as soon as possible in 2019 so watch out for a launch date which will be announced as soon as the site is completed, and the consents and licenses are all in place. Meanwhile, the Wild Earth team will be taking a well-earned break over the Christmas and New Year period, so take this opportunity to wish all their loyal customers a very safe and happy festive season and look forward to seeing you all back at again at “The Stoaker Room”. The staff at Cromwell Pharmacy wish to thank customers for all of your support over 2018. So often in the rush of business we forget to spend a moment to say how much we appreciate your custom. And we are acutely aware that most of the time you would prefer NOT to be sick or NOT to have to take the medicines prescribed! This holiday season we are CLOSED on ALL public holidays. Our opening hours are aligned to the business days, and when we are closed you have three options: 1. Visit Lake Dunstan Pharmacy – open EVERY day except Christmas Day; 2. Visit the on-duty Medical Centre in Cromwell - they hold supplies of emergency medicines; or 3. Phone the after-hours number - may attract a call-out fee 0274 953 353. Please remember to consider your medication needs carefully before the end of the working week or before you travel away from home! Our biggest concern at Christmas time is the change of environment for people who are taking medicines regularly for chronic conditions. Have you thought about where you will store them while you are staying away from home? Have you thought about visitors to your home including children and pets that are more inquisitive than you are used to? Please keep all medicines safely stored out of the reach of little people and animals. Cromwell is a friendly town full of delightful people, and we truly enjoy and appreciate our interactions with you when you visit our store. We also take pride in looking after the healthcare needs of your family and visitors during the holiday season. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy & Lucky New Year. From the friendly team at the Cromwell Pharmacy: Jackie, Stacey, Cindy, Trudy, Joseph, Lizzy & Nikki out back in the dispensary. Kathy, Sheryl, Anna, Robyn & Kritika at the retail counters.

The College News The end signals the start of a new beginning and amongst the farewells and best wishes for the holiday and festive season are the stirrings of excitement for a new year ahead – such are the seasons working within a school environment. Thank you to families and members of the wider school community who attended our Junior Prize Giving last Thursday to celebrate our students wide ranging achievements through academic, sporting and cultural endeavour. It is a pleasure to see students crossing the stage with genuine pride, having ‘Deserved their Success’. Well done.

He rawe and congratulations to all the Houses on their ‘Through the Decades’ Arts Week performances crafted over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. The rivalry, fun, colour and creativity mixed with courage, student leadership and house spirit is always memorable. Pisa rocked the school house with music from the 80’s by Twisted Sister and ‘Footloose’ dance grooves to take out this year’s title. A key to the success of this event is the energy and leadership by Year 10 students combined with the commitment and support from staff - thank you.

Our vision ‘Best I Can Be’ can only be achieved if we ‘mahi tahi’ and work together. Thank you for the direct support of so many initiatives and activities and the encouragement, the input and the feedback that enables us to continue to improve. Otago Polytechnic appoints brewing rock stars at Rough Rock Brewing Co.

Editorial supplied

Otago Polytechnic has appointed two highly experienced and talented brewers to help drive its exciting new Central Otago beer brewing facility – Rough Rock Brewing Co. Ben Middlemiss has taken up the role of Brewery Operations Manager, while Geoff Collie has been appointed Brewing Programmes Leader.

before getting a job as a trainee brewer at Speight’s Brewery. “I left the brewing industry in 2000 and completed a pharmacy degree, then returned to brewing at Canterbury for eight years until the 2011 earthquakes closed the site,” Geoff explains.

Born and raised in the South Island, Ben has more than 50 years’ experience in brewing and won more than 60 national and International awards.

“I then worked as Project Brewer for the Speight’s Brewery rebuild in 2011, and then with Emerson’s for their rebuild in 2014. I have worked on a couple of smaller breweries and a distillery since then.”

He has been instrumental in craft brewing in New Zealand and beyond, and is the founding brewer of the Cock and Bull chain of pubs as well as Steam Brewing Company.

Beginning in February 2019, Otago Polytechnic’s brewing qualifications have been crafted to meet industry needs as well as offer a learning experience that fits with learners’ lifestyles.

“It’s a great time to be in the industry. The beer culture in New Zealand is vibrant and thriving. We are evolving into a culture that really embraces quality food and beverages.

Jo Brady, Otago Polytechnic Deputy Chief Executive, says the Bannockburn brewery is a “flipped” model – it’s a fully commercial brewery that will support our new suite of brewing programmes. This makes it distinctly different from a traditional approach, which would have brewing programmes supported with a training brewery.

“I’m thrilled to be able to share my skills and experience.” As Brewing Programmes Leader, Geoff Collie also sees his new role as a “great opportunity” to pass on his knowledge to a new generation of brewers. “I have been involved in brewing operations management for 27 years, and brewery design projects for the last six,” says Geoff, who graduated from university with a chemistry degree, 10

The New Zealand Certificate in Brewing (Level 4), a full-time one-year programme, has been designed for those with a passion for brewing who want to get into the industry, or are seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills. Learners can build on those skills via

the six-month Level 5 New Zealand Certificate in Brewing, and a one-year New Zealand Diploma in Brewing (Level 6), both of which will suit those already working in the industry. The Level 5 and Level 6 programmes will initially be offered via Capable NZ, Otago Polytechnic’s centre for work-based learning. From 2020, the programmes will comprise a mix of on-site and distance learning. “We are looking to strengthen our position in Central Otago, and to do this we need to find niche programmes that can attract students from across the country,” Phil Ker, Chief Executive, Otago Polytechnic, says. “We are positioning our Central Campus in part as a centre for food and beverage in the heart of New Zealand’s premier tourism region. This opens up opportunities for edu-tourism. We have several ideas in the pipeline, such as matching beer with food created from local produce.” The purpose-built brewery is part of a $3 million redevelopment of Otago Polytechnic’s Central Otago Campus Bannockburn site, including a new trades block that will also house carpentry and automotive facilities. An official opening and open day was held on December 1. Students will start using the new facilities in early 2019. CROMWELL BULLETIN

TO THE

EDITOR

A Big Thank you I feel very humble to be a recipient of a lovely Secret Santa gift. I’m sure there are many more worthy folk than I!!. I was brought to tears with your kindness. Thank you so much Humble receiver The Cromwell Food Bank would like to sincerely thank all members of our local community who have contributed either food or funds to help us deliver quality food parcels to many individuals and families this year. We live in such a generous community with many , many groups contributing to our stock. Groups such as book clubs, golf club members, schools, church groups, service groups like Lions and Rotary, car club members and so on. Many folk also donate funds through the Cromwell Welfare Trust or to the local Resource Centre, as well as the Donations drawer beside the food bins at New World supermarket. We are truly blessed with all these gifts. On behalf of the recipients I say thank you, and I’d also like to acknowledge the Food Bank ‘fairies’, Jill, Kay and June for their volunteerism throughout the year. Best wishes for a happy festive season with family and friends, and a healthy, happy 2019. Adrienne Heal, Food Bank Co-ordinator. 33

Cromwell Free Wi-Fi launched

Cromwell District Promotions Group and Central Otago District Council have collaborated to bring Free Wi-Fi to the Cromwell Mall. The service has gone live this week in time for the summer months and increased visitors. CODC Information Services Manager Nathan McLeod said Council had been reviewing Wi-Fi infrastructure for the Cromwell i-SITE and Cromwell Library, while the Promotions Group had been asked by the business community to

drive a project for Wi-Fi in the Mall. “Rather than have competing services and duplication it just made sense for us to join forces so we can get a better result,” Mr McLeod said. The initiative fitted with the Council’s plans to enable better digital access to services for its communities and the libraries vision to ‘connect’ communities. From the i-SITE and promotions perspective, it is a step to enhance the visitor experience and encourage people into the Mall.

“It is fantastic to finally get the Free WiFi into the Mall in time for the holidays and for our seasonal workers,” said Cromwell and District Promotions Group Chair Janeen Wood. “This is a great feature we can now promote to visitors to our town.” The Wi-Fi services is limited to one hour per log on and is available between the hours of 7am and 11pm. To access the free Wi-Fi in the Cromwell Mall, search for ‘Cromwell Free Wi-Fi’.
